Elizabeth Gilbert is such a light
I completely agree on listening to that small voice that is saying "Hey, look over here...this might be cool..." I am one of those people who could never find that number one passion. Even as I was in grad school, working on my PhD in psychology, learning how to teach and do research, I kept thinking to myself, "Is this really what I want to do?"
I ended up following a little voice inside me that said "Take a quarter off, go back home, and see what's there for you." At 27 years old, it was this biggest period of soul searching in my life! I decided to try and teach kickboxing. When I got certified as a group fitness instructor, I got hired as a bootcamp instructor at a small studio that was desperate for female instructors. They asked me if I would consider becoming a certified personal trainer because they had an overflow of clients. I said, "Sure." Meanwhile, I am working on a personal growth and self development blog. I thought, "Why not write about health and fitness?" That led to... why not try video blogging.. then, why not create online programs? (My biggest goal for this year is to create 2!)
All this to say that, amidst the fear, the uncertainty, and many failures (which I have not included here), I continue to find and refine what my passion is. I get more and more excited about the projects I am taking on, which tells me that I am on the right path. AND I become less and less attracted to romantic entanglements (so on Point E.G.! ;) lol).

I have been searching most of my adult life for a role model and about a year ago I found Liz. I can listen to her everyday all day long. She’s so intelligent, brave, kind, and lives a full life of love. Thanks for all you do Liz and thanks for interviewing her Lewis. You did a great job.
I wish Liz had been around when I first had a teenage crisis of faith. "Give me a SIGN!" I have real trouble producing lists like 3 things you are grateful about. I resolve to try harder at this. Great podcast!

She said that at the beginning of any creative endeavor, ‘There’s a highway that I have to be on’ - these are her words, not mine; I’m paraphrasing - she said, ‘There’s a highway that I have to be on, to do this work. And, along that highway there’s any number of detours. And any time I find myself asking questions such as, am I going to be able to win a Tony with this, is my agent going to be able to sell this, are people going to want this, is the audience going to respond to this, is this the right kind of work, is this what the market is calling for’ - she said, ‘all of those questions are detours off the highway that I need to be on. And any of those questions that I start asking myself at the beginning of a creative journey is going to take me right off that highway and into the same neighbourhood every time - and that’s a ghetto where they’re going to take the hubcaps off my car, beat me and leave me for dead. Because it’s going to leave me asking the wrong questions.
“‘The only question [that I really need to ask] at the beginning of this creative endeavour is: Does the thought of making this illuminate me, ignite me, make me feel like I can’t wait to get up in the morning, and give meaning to a life that is often very difficult? If the answer is *yes,* then I’m on the right road.’”
Great interview. As a hummingbird I really appreciate having that approach to life explained and validated. And she's absolutely right about the lipstick. Keep interviewing folks like Liz and Alanis. They bring so much insight and joy to my life.

Gosh, thank you, @Lewis, for being so persistent and emailing Liz for a year to make this interview happen! I read her books and they left me in an owe.. I often randomly recall her concepts of creativity when I'm going about my day.. Sometimes she describes it in such an abstract way but it all makes so much sense in the end.. Liz is so down-to-earth, enlightened and so full of life and energy. Love her genuine laugh.. I also like how she interacts with other people in the room and looks at them when laughing at her or your jokes.. She is also very sweet to let you go off the track a bit and talk about yourself instead of just interviewing HER.. I actually love how YOU open up in this video and share even more of your own story and your family background.. I can incredibly relate to not feeling like I had real friends in school when growing up.. But finally being 30 years old now, living abroad in my dream city and being surrounded by successful diverse people from various backgrounds and of different nationalities I'm able to build the friendships I always wanted and also learned how to be a great friend to them myself..
I am watching this video in 2020. It's just so rich. Thank you for having such profound conversations. Liz's description of absolute value as home blew me away. That's exactly what I need to do for my creative journey. And for talking about your struggles in life and to where you have come to, gives me new hope. :) Thank you Lewis
I LOVED 'Committed' !!! It was a very different kind of book from E,P,L. and probably not as accessible to the masses. But I am soooo grateful for it. I learned a lot from reading it. It's the kind of book I will go back and read again ... and probably because I am deeply interested in our Sociology. I don't even understand people NOT wanting to know the social origins of things. THANK YOU LIZ!!!

Such a great interview, with so many gems of wisdom! I loved Liz's analogy of jackhammers vs. hummingbirds. The hummingbirds being multi-interested people following the pollen trail of curiosity, learning new ideas from different fields, and mixing it up through cross-pollination. Quiet, subtle, and beautiful sowers of ideas. Thanks, Liz, for recognizing that not all of us are lit up with one consuming passion, but by the curiosity to explore many different fields in our lives:-)
