@@Wynne-oz2ws Given the salinity and silt issues that SF Bay has, white sharks probably don't venture TOO far in to the Bay. It's actually probably too noisy and dirty for them to go as far as Pier 39, where all those bachelor sea lions hang out waiting for the tourists to throw them fish to eat.
Baker Beach sits just below and West of the Golden Gate Bridge as the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean collide. The water is pretty damn cold there even in the summer time. Also Baker Beach gets some waves that attract surfers, and yes, there are routinely fisherman surf fishing on the beach, although they are looking to catch some large fish it would be rare for someone to have line that could reel in a human or two, especially since the fishing line at any substantial test weight would just cut into the skin of the person who had the line tied around them if it didn't break first. There are obviously big fish in that area because the tide brings the fish from inside the Bay and the big fish come in to feed. You get the Salmon running from April through October, give or take a few weeks or so. The big Great Whites are gathered in huge numbers coming in from the biggest known Great White breeding habitats the Faralon Islands located 12 miles West of San Francisco Bay. I've been out there fishing for salmon and it is definitely a place where you do not want to be in the water. Shark infested waters is putting it lightly.

@@Wynne-oz2ws ---- growing up, my family lived about a mile from the beach in Los Angeles. I love the ocean and was surfing by 10 years old, always at the beach if not skateboarding, baseball or football. Sailing, fishing, outrigger canoe semi pro team, even lived in Hawai'I for a little while. I've got a very healthy respect for the ocean and any body of water, creek, river, pond, lake... because not only can the water kill you, yes, I had to save my girlfriend from drowning in a Riptide with 3-4 ft waves on top of the rip. I was just 16 yrs old. I barely made it, could have died trying to save her. I've got 3 older siblings and one sister was on the swim team in school and she loves the beach and she also raced outriggers. My brother and my other sister don't like the beach or the ocean. That one sister doesn't even like swimming in a lake or anywhere that has as she puts it "has things that swim around that are bigger than my hand". I'm good with it until I see or feel something or if I start thinking about the fact that I'm in a fiberglass canoe, 40 ft long, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep and me and 5 other guys have a paddle and we are 10 miles out in the ocean or even a half mile out. I have to concentrate on my paddling and timing of the stroke. If I start thinking about how deep the water is or the very large things that I know live beneath us, I'm not gonna panic but it is a natural feeling of men don't belong out here, we are so small in the vast ocean.
How incredibly sad for the loss of such a young person. Incredibly brave for her going out to rescue him/bring him in. And since it was mentioned, I find it very honorable that she led him to Christ (he accepted) -quick thinking on her part. Working as a Hospice Nurse, sometimes patients refuse chaplain visits but still want assurance/closure as they become closer to nearing death. I have had the honor of being asked to lead a small handful of patients in the sinners prayer.
Even in Florida I never go in water deeper than my ankles.... No way would I swim in deep water in California.. south Africa.. Australia or Egypt.... Lol
I had 3 injections of lidocaine and half my toenail removed today and thought that was painful . So my imagination runs wild to think what a shark bite would feel like . I would probably have a heart attack before even getting bit .
Hope your toe heals well. My big toe was injured during a round of kickboxing and it damaged my nail bed. A few weeks later my whole nail fell off while I was in the pub.😵💫 Took a while to grow back.
Sometimes apparently it doesn't hurt at all, a clamp feel and people fleeing notice their bottom leg is gone or annihilated . .etc . And sometimes it hurts like hell, and sometimes after a while is when it hurts.
I agree with what Hal says about the fishing line. It wouldn't help, it would get in the way, and it would waste valuable time tying it. There a couple possibilities that I can think of for her to do it... One is that a detail of the story is wrong and it was a rope. Another is, if you're panicking, it's hard telling what you are going to do. Edit: Yes, the Popov video is nightmarish.
I watched that papov video on a YT channel who enhances the whole video and takes stills and you Clearly see how bad that poor kid was just ripped apart by that tiger shark! 😢 If anyone interested I can try and find the channel to let y'all know.
Wonder why so few secondary persons / rescuers get attacked. I recall The huge GW that attacked all those ppl in that crazy Japan attack years ago, which you covered
Sharks don't have the neural power to do multiple attacks, for the most part. They sense a target, trigger, and do something. Attacking the same target more than once is as much as their shark brains can handle and sometimes not even that.

For what its worth GW sharks are all over the place let alone their prevalence in Southern California Northern California. As a life time surfer, 35+ years, I have come across Sharks. It is not frequent and most likely the Sharks aren't truly interested in eating humans. However when you get a GW of 16-18ft on your ass most likely this will turn out very badly. It is one thing to see a small juvenile shark but completely another when you see a 17ft monster. I know there are countless theories as to why they have come so close to shore etc. Everything from being confused or sickly are given as reasons. Also sewer run offs will increase the number or Sharks near salt water river mouths The average shark bite is a taste test the results of a shark that is potentially hungry and/or they are not well enough to hunt normally. Of course these are just my opinions and serve no real scientific evidence. There have been many times where I was surfing alone or away from a group and in those cases Sharks will almost always end up swimming away without attacking. I believe the true fear of the shark and it's propensity to kill are what scares the B- Jesus out of those who opt to avoid the ocean. I clearly recall an encounter, with a beast of a GW,! I was surfing Mavericks,-A world class big wave spot located about 50+ miles from SF. The waves were running 12-15 feet. I have no idea if it's true but I think the big ocean swells in this case at Mav,s, tend to keep the large GW at bay and out of the surf zone. Well one day myself and several friends, and others,😮were out at Mavericks. The surf was large by any standard. I know I had no idea of the sharks presence..Suddenly outside the notorious channel (this is where Surfers & their jet ski riding safetey team will meet Once he saw the size of this shark he wasted no time at all alerting all of us that a shark was in the vicinity and seemed to be drawing down on my group of surfers. At first my thought was 'no way, this guy is kidding us. However as he proceeded to ride over towards us, the vast majority of the surfers stayed put. Now the reason myself and other surfers pretty much blew him off. Even as he visited @8:12am, and saying a ,'Huge GW was seen by him and he felt based on the size of this shark it was a better idea for us to get out. As I say I was well within earshot now. He stayed still and discussed the situation with me. My Friends"and other fellow surfers, even belly borders hard cleared the F out and were very near the safety of the beach! That's when it hit me that I needed to either catch a wave in or ditch the board and swim in. I'd say within 10-15 minutes he told me his story. and experience with sharks, especially man-eaters??? I first asked to piggy back on the rescue net to reach shore ASAP. He declined saying only you need to get to shore. I found out later the jet ski was not running properly so the rider felt two bodies would swamp the ski. He urged me to paddle as hard as I could all the whole stopping to view the waters to see if the shark was still close by. 😂Long story short I paddled my ass off probably leaving a wake,,!. It wasn't until I was safe in the rocks that I replayed the entire event. That said I have surfed both Southern, and Northern, California. My mind still replays this incident almost daily and especially when I surf at Mavericks. I have made some slight changes. I wear a bright colored wetsuit. I placed ,',eyes" on the bottom of my surfboatd ( which supposedly freaks the would be shark. I don't surf before ,09;00am noty do I surf at dusk. Several reasons why I deploy the defences are too fold, not necessarily to save my life but to allow a better chance at pounding the sharks head, and eyes. That's my take and experience with these killing beasts!!
There was a shark in the area. It could return at any moment to re-attack the victim and/or any rescuers. In addition there was blood in the water which could have attracted other sharks to the area. The girl had guts. I wouldn't have gone in for him but I am a coward and I can't swim.
Hey hall...wouldn't fishing line do more damage anyway? I mean...if someone pulls to hard on fishing line thats wrapped around your body its as likely to cut the person very deeply. Id think itd do that just from pulling in general. As we all know fishing isn't like the rodeo. There's hooks on the end for catching fish but fishing line itself is very thin and I would think it wouldn't take much pressure to cut someone up bad.

Incredible bravery! Then to have awareness to baptize the victim before his death is beyond heroic. Rescued from a massive shark and rescued from spiritual death. God bless her
We often seem to hear of attacks where one or more people have immediately gone out to try and rescue the victim & that person isn’t attacked. 🤷♀️
Another great show Hal.
The water was 73 degrees in Maine???? Wow never thought it got that warm.
Thanks Hal sorry for the victims of this sad story.
I remember the first time I read about this attack was in a Time Life book about the sea.
There are many silent heroes, being courageous and selfless. RIP 🥀🦈🏴
L was literally thinking of the Popov attack and you said it at the same time. I dont know what happened exactly as no one does, but we got an idea of what was going on during that attack, and it was horrific. That shark tossed him around like he was nothing.
Well, they've been fishing since the Bible, there, so wherever there is a big fishing biz, you are taking a chance . A Hawaiian said that to me, we eat too much a their food, so they come in . .maybe so . .Asians love fish n Cali Karen's too. Lol. In Honolu etc
I think the fact that the Farallon Islands are only 28 miles west of San Francisco would be enough to deter me from swimming anywhere in San Francisco which has access to the open ocean lol.
Yeah I would never swim out in anywhere near San Fran .that's absurd .
I would like to think I would do that to help someone but until U are in that situation who knows good thing about adrenaline thank U hal❤
Be a tough call . Family yes, non familiar person. Eehhh
Hal!! Thank u so much for the upload!!! ☕ ❤❤❤❤
God bless Shirley 💟
Never go swimming in the ocean. 🐟
Another great single attack show Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
I heard about this attack on a shark documentary Sharkatraz. I also read about it in one of my shark books. It sounds like a territorial attack.
This is the ONLY shark attack that took place on an actual San Francisco beach--even though The Farallons are part of SF.
Sharkatraz lol smh
The sharks probably are sated in San Fran.
@@waltermodel6647 It was built around that security camera film that caught a 'teen age' white shark launching a breach attack on a sea lion RIGHT at the dock where the tour boats load and unload tourists at Alcatraz. Hell, I've stood there to get on and off tour more than a few times.
People are so ridiculous! Treading water and talking? Your waiting to be eaten
Yeah, kinda . We get away with it often, though. Weird.
Fiiiilllttthhh. Someone used to see me surfing outside alone in NY and her father took her fishing a lot being Italian on Long Island . .she said she used to fear for me as she knew the kinda of things she would see in the ocean as a kid. Lol
If I start thinking about how deep the water is or the very large things that I know live beneath us, I'm not gonna panic but it is a natural feeling of men don't belong out here, we are so small in the vast ocean.
always enjoy Hal
Lol
Amazing bravery

Heyyy, Hal!! Commercials!!! Woo hoooo!!
Hello. Good Evening Hal 🦈🦈 Happy Shark Wednesday 🦈🦈
Wow! I don’t think I’d heard of this attack! Thx Hal 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
I hated that people pulled out their damn phones while this poor kid was being consumed.
If you know what you are doing with 200 pound class tackle you can catch any size great white with the right wire and hook

Yeah but they gotta tag em first n they gotta tag at least half the big sharks around yearly to make a difference but good start.!.
Live at the beach in San Diego. There's this guy who comes into my work. He got his calf bit off by a shark 20 some years ago while surfing here.
Daayumm
Where did it happen ?
@@Wynne-oz2ws Some break in La Jolla. Not sure exactly which one.
@@Wynne-oz2ws There's been a lot more attacks here than the city admits.
thats real 😮😮

Wonder why so few secondary persons / rescuers get attacked.
I recall The huge GW that attacked all those ppl in that crazy Japan attack years ago, which you covered
Sharks don't have the neural power to do multiple attacks, for the most part. They sense a target, trigger, and do something. Attacking the same target more than once is as much as their shark brains can handle and sometimes not even that.

The first couple I can understand I lost my wife like this but it was a swamp looked very inviting we where on are honeymoon and wanted to have some fun and cooldown we should have just gone in the resort swimming pool they even had a waiter that brought food and drinks ! It was a big swamp we just looked at each other and said what are the chances in this huge swamp a croc would be there anyway plus we more likely to die by a bee sting or car crash so we jumped and splashed all about I even picked her up like the scene in dirty dancing and then she was just gone ! 🤷♂ It is ok i now have surfer wife we both love nature and ocean and swim with seals but we careful driving are car is rated the best in crash test ! and we have a bee plus a snake bit kit we take with us when we swim for safety !
What?? How did your wife die?! This is horrible
Bee kit? Snake kit? While diving? 🤔

@@HannahBirzes Well after i did the dirty dancing deal i set her down turned to barf all the physical stuff and booze made me barf and then i heard a splash she was gone caught the tail of a croc maybe a gator but i did get to scratch the dirty dancing river deal off my bucket list maybe picking a dang swamp was a bad idea ! I almost dove in after but at that point i became sober and realized i was in a swamp with dangerous man eating stuff so i ran to shore 🤷♂ now i just swim in ocean with seals for safety !

Most important question that one may answer is Who is Jesus Christ to you? My Savior, King of Kings, Lord of Lord! I'm happy that he was saved!
I know I had no idea of the sharks presence..Suddenly outside the notorious channel (this is where Surfers & their jet ski riding safetey team will meet
Once he saw the size of this shark he wasted no time at all alerting all of us that a shark was in the vicinity and seemed to be drawing down on my group of surfers.
Someone fishing on the beach could have caused the attack.
She saved him? it doesn't sound heroic at all maybe i missed something
There was a shark in the area. It could return at any moment to re-attack the victim and/or any rescuers. In addition there was blood in the water which could have attracted other sharks to the area. The girl had guts. I wouldn't have gone in for him but I am a coward and I can't swim.
Maybe you miss a lot.
Dude,,,what's up with you tonight.,,had a couple of brews or something,,😅. ? ✌🏽
What a horrible story. Poor Alred.i just can't imagine anything worse. He must have been in agony lying on the beach. Just a hideous death.
6:20 I'm convinced that's a Meg. Yep.💙🦈🩵
