I was addicted to sugar, depressed and lacking energy and confidence. I have lost 14kg, my sugar addiction is in remission, my depression has eased, my energy is returning and I am cleaning the house again and my confidence is much better. I am 69 and I never thought my health could improve so much! Thanks to all those who responsibly promote this way of eating and living.

Ann, your remark about being able to clean the house again is HUGELY important. I could see I was going downhill because I had zero motivation or energy to clean or tidy up and living in clutter just makes things worse and worse and you spiral downwards incredibly quickly. You also don't want to go out or socialise unless it's absolutely necessary. Basically, you're just barely functioning on every level. Thank God I found high fat carnivore through all the excellent proponents on you tube and their wonderful 'tribes'. I am beginning to feel myself again. Blessings to you, lovely x

Ann, so happy for you! I’m 64, was carnivore for six months and just felt great. Got a bad virus around a month ago and started eating more carbs. My depression is back with a vengeance, so noticeable. Back to carnivore, it really works!

I had a brain/cranial nerve injury caused by Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. I wasn’t diagnosed or appropriately treated until my 9th day in the hospital. By then I had meningitis and nearly died. I was inappropriately treated with high doses of multiple IV antibiotics. But It was a virus. I needed steroids and anti viral medication. I left the hospital in a desperate condition and spent the next year sleeping around the clock while my brain tried to heal. I couldn’t walk or read or write or speak. By the second year I began to be awake more but wasn’t able to leave the house or care for myself. My neurologist told me that I would make what improvement I would have by the end of the second year. I had little to no improvement and by year three my quality of life was so completely unacceptable that I regretted that I hadn’t died. On my own I started a strict ketovore diet as a Hail Mary. I knew about epileptic children being saved with the ketogenic diet and I had read that studies were being done using a ketogenic diet for brain injured military personnel. Well, within two weeks, I wasn’t falling or passing out or sundowning or flooding and I could be out of bed for more and more hours each day. I got stronger, my memory came back. Five years later, I’m still strict ketovore, and while not the person I was before the injury, I’m strong and fit and optimistic and happy. So yep, it’s my miracle. It repaired my BRAIN.

@@joecamel6835 I began to dramatically, suddenly, inexplicably improve at about the two week mark. Of course I’m still on the path to recovery. I’m old. And spending two years in bed as an old person is catastrophic. I was highly physically debilitated as well as brain damaged.

I was on anti-depressants for 18 years and never once did my psychiatrist order any kind of health screening. In 2005, I finally got x-rays and then an MRI that showed a broken C5/C6 disk and a calcium deposit covering from C4 - C7. Four years after surgery, I started weaning myself off of anti-depressants using whole food supplements. Eleven years later, I found Keto and then Carnivore. Some days are good. Some days are not. I find improvements in my mental health one day at a time.

I am a psychiatrist and talk with my patients all the time about ways high blood sugars, etc. may be affecting their mental health. I would say only about 10% pay any attention. Many complain that I am suggesting that they subtract the only thing they truly enjoy from their lives. I haven't listened the entire way through but am anxious to know how Dr. Palmer talks to his patients to help them with their carb addictions.

    • @Terri_2.0

Honesty is still the best policy in every area of life, and in every profession. If they complain that you´re suggesting something unthinkable, that´s something they may need to reflect on. Nourishing ourselves shows self-compassion and love, and cutting out sugar and other carbs will facilitate healing, physically and mentally.

Tell them to eat as much quality animal fat as they want until the cravings diminish: butter, tallow, lard, ghee, bacon grease. You have to give them something if you take something away, and it will really nourish them. Just speaking from personal experience.. :)

Suggest to your patients to watch some of these Doctors on UA-cam. Use their research to back your suggestions up. These people obviously have food addictions that have caused or worsened their mental health. Do your research as well to have some of the most informative videos quick at hand to suggest so they don’t get bogged down in all the chatter. There are so many knowledgeable doctors available who are currently practicing and seeing patients, actively researching and have not only patients doing better to back them up but research papers as well. I started out on my journey not looking for or needing mental health help. I came to this way of eating for my diabetes diagnosis. I started out listening to the usual “keto influencers” and that did help but when I found the actual DOCTORS on here is when I really began to heal my body! I have family members telling me “don’t listen to all those quacks on the internet! They are just trying to sell you something. They aren’t doctors so they don’t know what they are talking about.” Well I was able to shut them all up when I found the REAL DOCTORS AND RESEARCH SCIENTISTS! I could find the research they mentioned in their videos that were published in medical journals! Long story short; some people really need to know and learn the medical and pharmaceutical field are in the business to keep them sick. Once they see that there is research that proves they have known for decades what the sugar and high carbs actually do to the body and that medication is just a bandaid maybe they will listen. So many just want to pop a magic pill and trust it will fix them quickly for good.

no intentional sugar or carbs. My son said that part of KETO. After finding Dr. Ken Berry, my son and I went full Keto. I have also went 6 x 18 daily fasting. For the last 12 years, I have been on zombie autopilot. I now have the creativeness I had in high school.

I struggled with narcolepsy for years (and still am) to the point where I couldn't move ahead in my career and I was letting my family down- think of the guy who always falls asleep at staff meetings and can't help my wife with the baby until I take my nap, and was very forgetful and absent minded.
I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and went through elimination diet/paleo/keto diet journey. Long story short, keto/carnivore + multiple-day fasting lifestyle helped my brain function so much better the narcolepsy doesn't dictate anymore. Even though the current literature says adults can't regrow neurons in the lateral hypothalamus (area damaged by narcolepsy), I can regrow neurons in other areas and improve the function of existing neurons and halt the autoimmunity of narcolepsy. Memory and logical thinking and problem-solving improved. Brain fog disappeared. I got a promotion at work, 3 years later I left the corporation to become an entrepreneur, and I feel like I can really be myself. I'm not living on the sidelines of my own life anymore.

    WARNING… it’s a long post 🙃
I had my hubby take me to the ER on 8/6/2021 because I literally thought I was going to die. I don’t go doctor very often so at my first request my hubby was confused and then moved quicker than I expected. My heart rate was 144 and I was terrified! 😩 I called my kids and sent a text telling them how much that I loved them and how proud I was of them. My BP was really high for me as well. After some blood work, chest X-ray, ekg, and physical exam I was told I was dehydrated, my potassium was low but my heart was fine. That was the only explanation we (hubby and I) were given. They had me drink a high dose (disgustingly sweet) orange type drink of potassium and gave me a bag of iv fluids… then discharged me with a prescription for 3 days worth of 1 dose daily of high dose potassium AND a prescription for anxiety medication 😣 WTAF 😳 I filled the potassium script but not the anxiety meds! HELL NO! Then comes the best part… followed up with a cardiologist the following week and was told my palpitations and skipped beats were just something I’d have to live with. Our thoughts we ok fine BUT WHY are they happening? No answers, just crickets… he couldn’t leave the room fast enough. So he prescribed me a 7 day heart monitor. When I returned to talk about results with his NP I asked her if this could be related to some menopause symptoms I had been having for MONTHS? She said absolutely! 😮 I went to gynecologist but honestly didn’t want hormone therapy so now I have cleaned up my diet… was dirty keto before my ER visit and now I’m ketovore/carnivore… feeling much better but still a ways to go for optimal health AND I lost 17# since then and now with reduced severity of menopause symptoms. I’m saddened that no questions were asked in the ER about anything hormone related… after all I had just turned 50! AND no discussion about anything mental except that the doctor thought I was over reacting 😮
Now at home I check my BP somewhat regularly and it is fantastic! I still have pvc’s from time to time and very light classic menopause symptoms but I feel like I have the tools and resources to guide my health from a few of my favorite YT doctors AND greatly encouraged by all the comments I read of everyone’s experiences. Thank you all for sharing… it does help many of us!
    Much love!
    Danese

My story is VERY similar to yours. I landed in the ER three times. Truly thought I was dying. Continued to be awakened by panic attacks in the night, as well as out of the blue during the day, while relaxed. Feeling faint, chest pain, nausea, stomach cramps, uncontrollable trembling. Weeks and days of palpitations. Finally, a UA-cam cardiologist recommended magnesium. I drank some magnesium citrate powder and my palpitations were gone within 10 minutes!! Now when I feel them, I just drink the mag. Citrate and feel normal again. This was all brought on by menopause, yet NO doctor told me!
I feel that the medical field continues to shamefully ignore menopausal suffering. And it is part of EVERY woman’s life! We cannot “opt-out” of it!

OMG! Thank goodness, I am OK today, but I did have clinical depression 20 years ago & had a very unhelpful psychiatrist. I now am convinced that my experience was a combination of life change and the effect of Splenda on gut health. There was no discussion of my diet & I don't recall any labs being done. There was definitely no discussion about the Prozac that was prescribed, ie that it wasn't likely to be effective (it wasn't). When I reported that I didn't feel any better, the doctor increased the dose. When I told him that I still didn't feel better, he said, "Oh, I think your are better." He told me to be careful or I would gain weight. I did gain weight which was depressing. I was advised not to stop the med cold turkey, but I did. Luckily, I didn't suffer any severe consequences. I am doing great today off of artificial sweeteners and very low carb diet. I feel like most doctors are just inadequately educated licensed drug pushers.

80/20 High fat ketovore was the game changer. Upping my fat gave me a sense of peace I'm not sure I've experienced before (without the help of meditation or drugs.) PTSD, Depression, Brain Fog all lifted. It also improved my sleep after being on high protein, fairly high fat for over a year. It also finally ended intense sugar cravings.

I have depression stimming from Chronic Pain Syndrome and the neuropathy that causes the pain. Every time I have gone to a mental health provider I have told them I want tools, not meds... Every time they tell me "ok," and every time, after a few sessions, they try to write me a prescription. It's infuriating. I was recently diagnosed with T2 Diabetes and began working towards changing my diet over to a Ketovore diet. Four weeks into it my mood and how I feel has done a complete 180. Thank you! I'm still a work in progress but I am bounds beyond what I have been for the last 20 years! I have lost about 15 lbs so far and my fasting levels are down from the upper 300's to between 100 and 110. ( I am taking her word for it, since I have no frame of reference as to what is typical and what is atypical progress. If my doc is fluffing me on this, please let me know, hehe. I am trusting her word and experience on this.)
My A1C down from the 10.1 to 9.0 in just a shade less than four weeks, and it is in those four weeks that I have been changing my lifestyle and diet choices over to a PHD one.
For reference, the blood draw for the latest test was done a week ago, and in the last week my average number for my blood glucose for the days since they did that last blood draw is at a 115mg/dl (down from the 380mg/dl it was on the first set of lab work four weeks ago.) Set to test the A1C again in 3 months, as well as a full diabetic blood panel workup then.

after 21 years, when i was getting off a high dose cocktail of opioids in 2017 (used for chronic pain secondary to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome), I was already paleo keto. not ingesting sugar, gluten and dairy helped to some degree with withdrawal b/c i didn't substitute one drug for another. And eating high protein, high fat helped my brain heal during withdrawal as best as it ever will. I essentially followed a similar protocol to those who have TBIs b/c I basically had a chemically induced brain injury. Going carnivore helped with PAWS which went on for about 3 years for me, and even the sugars from nuts and green veges (low carb veg), triggered opioid cravings. cutting out artificial sweeteners also helped tremendously. It's actually what helped me get rid of PAWs finally.
I am now left with intestinal visceral hypersensitivity which causes excruciating cramping and pain when I ingest fiber. 5 years later i am still dairy free carni. and doing fairly well considering the permanent hypothalamic and pituitary damage i am left with.
carni has saved my life...managed my joint and intestinal pain... helped to heal my brain to some degree...and given me the energy and strength to now be addicted to exercise to manage my pain...which is an addiction i will gladly take for life...

I've had an atypical Fibromyalgia diagnosis for decades and had been on Lyrica (anti-epileptic) and Savella (an SSRI - an upper) with a minor amount of depression due to living in pain. What I really have was being compound heterozygous MTHFR (and a few other dirty genes). I went moderately low carb to keto to ketovore with methylated folate and cobalamin with occasional muscle relaxer. It turns out that I don't take in much folate (spinach) and cannot metabolize fake folic acid (all purpose flour) such that I cannot create GABA (inhibitory neurotransmitter - shut down pain) which also controls muscle spasms. No more fibromyalgia, not much pain, not much muscle spasms, no living in constant pain and a far better outlook on life without the carbs.

Recently, I stalled on Keto and went off the deep end.
I walked into work and immediately became triggered on a simple issue, I knew I was overreacting and felt embarrassed and apologized and split quickly to my assigned areas which is away from my central office.
I am at a cross-road as it seems to be the change of season that changes my appetite or actually lose my appetite and I reach for non healthy crap, then im triggered by anxiety and feel heavy emotions of defensiveness again. Then anger from it because I know what’s happening in my body is triggered by the crap I recently consumed.
It makes me so perplexed as the others in my orbit seem to not act out with hostility and their diet is REALLY bad. But for me, I go off the deep end from some cake.

I did "taper" off but at some point had to "cut the cord" and go through withdrawal. The acute anxiety only lasted a few days and gradually resolved, but the depression lasted for months. My "professional" help was in no wise interested in anything but increasing dosages or trying a different, stronger medication. Even after leaving my psyche meds behind, I continued getting Rx's of similar medications for neuropathic pain. It didn't take long to determine that pain was preferable to dependency.

That was extremely interesting and helpful. Thanks so much for having him on and discussing this important topic ! I have terrible neuropathy, not diabetic or alcoholic, my doctor insists antidepressants is the way to go. I have respectfully resisted and im so happy I have even tho I would love a cure or pain relief for my small nerve fiber peripheral neuropathy.

Have had severe depression since I was 20. Finally, A Dr. Put me on MAOs. Within 10 days I was a different person. My depression/ADD is also genetic. I flunked out of college, but by Spring I was better, but my grades were terrible. So, I went to work and got married. Depression kept returning. It was the Mao's that made the difference. I was dx with ADD when I was 40. I had been working as a computer programmer for the state of Florida and thought I was doing a good job and my department manager fired me and I never really understood why. When I told my father, p he suggested I go get tested for learning disability. I was missing bits and pieces of conversations and sometimes took me much longer to write programs. Unfortunately, 2 yrs later the MAO just suddenly stopped working after 12 yrs . So after these crazy psychiatrists put me on mood stabilizers until I could start a new antidepressant I got worse. The SSRI did not work and I went back to my old psychiatrist with the idea of combining a tricyclic and another type of antidepressant. I can't remember what he put me on but I ended up on a effexor. I went back to college and got two masters degrees in two different areas of mental Health studying attention deficit disorder in women / adults. I graduated with a 3.8 average in both Masters, but I worked my butt off for them. During that time the effects was losing its effects and a new psychiatrist put me on Wellbutrin XL 450 mg. I've been on this drug for 20 years and p there is nothing out there that is affordable that will work for me. My house was destroyed by Hurricane Michael and like a lot of people the insurance company did not come through. My little condo was paid for. My daddy bought it for me because he always wanted me to have a roof over my head. It's like he could see in the future what was going to happen. So I stayed strong and tried to do the right things, but so much had happened to me. I guess the hurricane was the final straw. I had chronic pain from standing, fibromyalgia, add I'm working for $11 an hour in retail. So I woke up and my whole body was on fire and my boss suggested I take a leave of absence. I collapsed into bed, did EMT and got on pain meds. I think it helped. I know I couldn't tell a difference when I was off the Wellbutrin. When I got back on the Wellbutrin I got better but still having problems getting out of bed. What is wrong with these damn psychiatrists. When I tell my psychiatrist or whoever I talk to there that I can't get out of bed and they can't figure it out I question his ability as a doctor in psychiatrist. For the past year and a half I have no motivation to do anything. It's hard for me to even take my dog out. Dear God somebody please help me. I live in a retirement high-rise with people that are sitting around waiting to die. I figured that if I don't find it answer I'm just going to become another statistic
Sally H. Is there a psychiatrist or Dr somewhere in Tallahassee or anywhere who can help me? I've definitely been working on the carnivore diet because of the IBS etc. But I feel like these doctors just stare at you with this dumbfounded look. I do try to go to work and stand for 5 to 6 hours. But the only thing that's keeping me alive is my little dog.

I don't want to live like this with no hope. My family is horrible to me and I really don't have any friends anymore. I'm not having a pity party. I just don't want to live anymore.

@@sallyhanson8317 it must be really hard for you living what you describe as a half life. Perhaps try BBBE (bacon, beef, butter and eggs) version of carnivore for 30 days. I’m certain that if you persevere with carnivore you will get better and highly likely even get of the medications, it could just be slower for you as the body needs time to heal and reset itself.
