My late Mum was diagnosed with mental illness back in 1981. She was treated with electric shocks and pills. Not enough knowledge back then, stigma and no podcasts like this one to be educated on this illness. I am so glad people suffering with mental illness today have all these tools to better their lives....
I’m sorry to think that she remained depressed in spite of meds and ECT. Please know that your Mama didn’t choose to be mentally ill but I also know that many others aren’t always compassionate. Sorry. I just wanted to acknowledge you sharing. Look outward. M
Thank you Dr Palmer ..you are very good to explain the root of mental illness!!.. I am saving my money to buy your book, that explain the causes that create mental illness GOD BLESS YOU FOR BEEN SO GENEROUS TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS EARTH!!
Keto is a 100,000-year-old reaction to scarcity and survival necessity. Don't call keto a new fad. Refrigerators, 24/365 food, and processed high-carbs junk food are the "new fad."
I think there’s just a better understanding that new treatments for incredibly devastating illnesses like schiz issues have NOT gotten better really at all with standard antipsychotic treatment. He’s right when he says psychiatry can keep people “out of jails” out of “institutions” but don’t restore a persons life. In my opinion things like Covid have really brought mental health to the forefront as an urgent need for people that have unintentionally lost their lives because of how he puts it “bipolar stress situations in college” “marijuana smoking” and pulling all nighters. He is realizing that this old treatment is having huge benefit in people who have nothing and are not getting better by standard psychiatry. Also in the last 10 or so ish years there has been a greater more finite understanding of how schiz disorders in all their mystery work in the brain
Yes, this whole ‘red meat is bad for my heart’ thing needs be dispelled. You can interview Dr. Anthony Chafee or Dr. Paul Mason to get your information straightened out
Thanks Dr. Palmer on your efforts to alleviate pain and suffering. I am currently digesting the contents of Brain Energy along with Toxic Superfoods by Sally K Norton. While both publications address the impact of mitochondrial efficiency towards mental health, I am seeing an area of overlap. One thing that came to mind is your recommended list of foods and the inclusion of spinach in particular. Due to your conversation, it may be possible that folks may go gung ho on spinach and almond smoothies. As a result, the oxalate toxicity might compromise the benefits of your advice due to mitochondrial damage. I am finding videos by Elliot Overton and Sally's book helpful in managing the oxalate dumping and dialing the pace of progress to maximize benefits.
In Kinesiology we learned that trauma is beyond the intellect. Although psychology and counseling can help, as said, you cannot talk or think your way out of trauma. Healing can only come with physical senses including the sixth sense.
Ok, you both completely messed up the question about fasting 😊 What fasting is: you don’t eat. What happens when you don’t eat? Insulin stays low. Therefore “fasting mimicking diet” doesn’t mean “you eat just a little bit, maybe some nuts or so”, fasting mimicking diet is NOT consuming “just a little calories”, it is a diet where you can eat A LOT of calories as long as those calories come from fat. You can actually GAIN weight and you are still on a fasting mimicking diet. Why is that? Cos your insulin doesn’t go up. It doesn’t go up cos fat doesn’t raise insulin. Fasting mimicking diet literally means diet that doesn’t raise your insulin. It DOES NOT mean a diet that is low in calories. You can eat just one small piece od bread and it can contain just 100 kcal and you have already broken your fast. Or you can consume 3000 kcal in the form od fat and a bit of protein and your body still thinks you are fasting cos your insulin stays low. I hope that helps. p.s. I didn’t know that but dr. Andrew Huberman explained this in detail several times :) Just to make sure everyone understands: fasting mimicking diet has nothing to do with the amount of calories you consume, it’s just the diet that keeps insulin levels low regardless of the amount of calories you consume.
yes I agree, and when you are in ketosis your body burns ketones instead of insulin. The brain actually prefers ketones for energy rather than glucose (insulin).
Exactly, you're regulate the Chemichal imbalance by what you eat because most, if not all, cell have insulin receptors and they tend to shut down when insulin is overly present. Dr. Ekberg described it with humour as a sales person contacting you by robot callsevery 10th minute. After a while you stop answering the phone even if you initially are well-mannered, polite or even curious. And this can happen with people that are not specifically obese.
Love this Doctor thinking outside of the box, thank you for devoting your life to helping people with their pain. Proper nutrition makes absolute sense! But also, people seem to be built for relationships. Healthy, fulfilled relationships require selflessness and self control. Let's explore what real love requires: self sacrifice. And our community doesn't seem to give this idea the proper weight of consideration. Even proper nutrition requires a sort of self denial.
Awesome podcast, I really appreciate the information especially in light of the fact that my dad is currently suffering from depression and anxiety however I'm a little disappointed that in the exercise discussion, resistance training didn't even receive an honorable mention. If we're primarily concerned with improving metabolic health, resistance training is vastly superior.
THIRTEEN DAYS ?! I am so amazed at the assinine diagnosis! I think the old mourning protocol of the Victorian Era is actually closer to what we should expect in timetable of a person's grief journey. Where a person was given a "permission" to even function differently in all aspects of their lives. They even had what colors matched the depth of mourning the family would be expected to wear. I'm sure it did not apply to everyone. Humans do have such a variance of what works for each person. But at least there was a more realistic expectation of a person going through grief of the loss of thier loved ones. Since when is such a devastating loss getting so callously handled become permissable? I believe there should be an investigation of that person who came up with that day limit of "allowance of depression from death of loved ones" protocol. Their sanity should be questioned!
I have noticed that there are moderators and those that are "addictivators". How addiction prone is a person can have an influence on each person's health too. That could be genetic or enviromental too. The social aspects are crucial in a person's understanding of food's place in a person's life. There are so many factors that need to be taken into account.
To make a fair correction, most people do not have the option to have psychedelic therapy. Is it for everyone, no, I don't think so. However, most won't get other options than psychiatric medication, talk therapy, maybe CBT. For most people, that's it.
I’ve got chronic symptoms of depression & anxiety & ADHD! Plus emotional-dys-function. Can’t control my emotions when they’re triggered off! Excuse me for living!

I love the Chanel and the info is great - so this is not meant as a criticism but just a comment - the vid was mostly about depression and keto. I really didn't hear anything about anxiety or causes of anxiety specifically (beyond the implicit, unstated idea that keto helps neurotransmitter imbalance or deficiencies). I would retitled this video, just to help listeners find the content they are looking for. Still enjoyable vid.
Nutritional Psychiatry is the future for mental health for sure… However, don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater! We tend to follow new waves of trends in any area of our lives, because we are still looking for holy grail or golden pill that doesn’t exist. I believe that the answer is HOLISTIC. Which means, that all new (old) discoveries are pieces that help and support our troubles. Discovery of antidepressants and theory of neurotransmitters imbalances was amazing and helped so many people. But in time we found that it is not a “golden pill” and there is more to add into the puzzle then simply increase the chemicals available in the brain. Now this is a new era of realisation of how diet and lifestyle play a role in these processes. And in addition we now find a new imbalances- which are related to our gut microbiome. Big time. But again, because we still don’t fully understand how our bodies work, we need to be careful, not to go into “black or white” perception. It is a wonderful thing that more and more medical professionals see the importance of what we have in our forks and how we think and move our bodies, but don’t underestimate what we already achieved with medications and psychotherapy (especially). Everything has its place. I’m Nutritional Therapist that is working in the field of Functional Medicine and my area of interest is mental health exactly. I use diet, lifestyle and supplements to support and address mental health issues. This is foundation and we need to be aware of the interconnection within the body systems and how they impact each other in terms to manage our health problems (including mental health). However, I have seen many times how not only one but many approaches are needed to help individuals. Very often it is the combination of diet, lifestyle, supplements, psychotherapy and other therapy approaches such as EMDR, and pharmacological treatments. BUT, what we really need is the INDIVIDUALISED treatment and approach. I believe this is the key. And I’m happy and excited that there are ongoing new developments, for example psychedelics. We need all of them to help our bodies to rebalance and bring them towards healing❤️

Remember the story about 2 blind people describing an elephant? The first one is standing in front and touching the trunk… the second person is standing behind and touching the elephant’s tail…For me this is exactly a picture of the scientist investigating the human body and nature…for the moment they keep discovering only separated sides, aspects or areas of the nature, that’s why we need holistic and personalized approach to every single person who has health issues. The new research is proving that eating disorders are very brain and biologically based For me it was never about talking it out I was incredibly intelligent and already was able to encourage the reasons For me it was never about talking it out Im incredibly intelligent and already able to intellectualize everything. Nor is it my level of willpower or strength. There is a lot of New aged treatments but sadly they are not offered in all places they're considered experimental & not covered by most insurances Which is ridiculous
Is there any scientific literature out there to support this theory? I always thought complex carbs were best for depression. Also, running has been studied for decades as a treatment for depression. I've been a runner and a depressive for 30 years, and it's the only thing that keeps my symptoms at bay. I've been on multiple meds and diets that have not been very effective overall. Sugar and alcohol are obviously terrible for mental health. This is super interesting, though. I am going to read up on the research. Thank you!
Fasting Mimicking diet = a diet that promotes the benefits of fasting without actually fasting. Strange that the host doesn't understand that. Also, fasting is not a component of Keto but can be done in conjunction with it.
A 14 day allowance for grief is ludicrous. It is old fashioned grief, even primitive people have a stipulated long period, maybe a year where everyone makes allowances for you. It is a great idea. It is to be expected, there would be something wrong with you if you did NOT go through it.
So no the criteria for MDD would not be given due to grief. Also people can be severely sad but not have clinically significant functional impairments in daily activities so no diagnosis. However I agree that food is a huge factor and also that chemical Imbalance is not true. Overall great podcast Also exercise is proven to be just as effective as pills.
This title about finding a root cause is not adressed in this video. I'm puzzled why interviewer didn't educate himself about some obvious topics. His nutritional knowlege is obsolete. I'm waiting all the time for them to start talking about the topic in the title and they never got to the point.
I do wonder though about disorders like schizoaffective and schizotypal disturbances which are kind of void of hallucinations or outrageous behavior and mainly just reside with devastating negative, cognitive and a dearth of personality and poverty of thought issues. I wonder how Keto would affect this
Unless a big T traumatic event occurs to a "normal" happy-ish person like the scenario described here of losing wife and kids, the main cause of anxiety and depression is childhood trauma, which leads to unhealthy relationships and lifestyle (food /sugar/refined carbs / drugs / alcohol) in an effort to feel better, all of which only compounds the trauma. Anxiety and depression are the fruiting body of unresolved early life trauma. But there is also the impact of natural mortal fear, having anxiety and depression simply for existing. Existential dread. Realizing you are in a fragile body that could stop working any time and you are located on a blue ball in the "middle" of infinite space. Gulp. For anyone who is serious about going beyond anxiety / depression - Fix your diet first thing, stop doing all the crap you intuitively know does nothing good for you. Taper off all addictions. Learn how to Meditate, sit with the fear of death, feel it completely. Learn how to breathe properly. Get regular outdoor exercise. Then address the unresolved trauma with a mix of self help and professional help. Resist pharmaceuticals. Consider psychedelics.
Well though out comment and excellent advice 🙏 Of course, we could try a keto diet as espoused by Dr Palmer which, supposedly, can revolutionise mental health 👍
@@skippy7208 Cheers Skippy. Keto allowed me to fast from my food addictions and now its just how I eat. Rather than serotonin deficiency, brain inflammation (and whole body inflammation) is now being looked at as a major cause of diet related depression and anxiety.
Travmatic events change everything in the body, and the Brain, perception, ect..so i would say it is all depend in what kind of situation Person is, sitting with irational fear was never good for me, because it was body that it was so inflamed..and when this irational fear kick in, oh gosh, you become disable, because body is missing nutrition So always find i help, but keto and carnivore are definetly the tools to get out from this terible condition ;) All the best 🙏
Or get to know the living God through Jesus Christ, repentance and forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life! No more fear of death, at all! ( fear of the physical process, ➡️ natural and normal, but complete peace regarding what comes after).
Why would you want to limit plants and carbs over animal products for cancer and heart disease risk reduction. What and where is the evidence for that?
I always thought the root cause was hour upbringing, most therapists I've met don't seem to want to delve Into it, they seem to want to concentrate on the present and it doesn't work for me.
The past affects us, but we live in the present, and part of being successful in the present is letting go of the past through forgiveness, and envisioning a positive identity for the future.
Eating a donut (assuming he is referring to a wheat flour and sugar donut type) once a week but trying to prevent heart disease ... what is the thinking? Indulgence vs science? I don't get it 😕
Red meat is shamefully missing from being mentioned and it is the mainstay of my and many other healthy people's diet. If I can eat only one thing, it must be red meat...BEEF! Best wishes.
Bc many refuse to trust in God... His Word can Heal the people.... ever heard of " Bible comfort for mental health " the Moody bible therapy program... studying the Bible scriptures and getting into a talk therapy group...getting rid of self pity.... not ok to just sit home all day and Not go to work or school...... laziness is a sin....people need to find positive hobbies and clean the house and help others
I want to mention that doughnuts do have trans fat, and I would be more concerned with that and your family history of heart issues over red meat consumption. I have a degree in nutrition. Trans fat spikes heart issues beyond comprehension.
Genetics play a very minuscule role in metabolic illness. Social and environmental issues..TOXINS..poor nutrition…are the brunt of it. And all these are fixable but for the greedy few that like things just as they are because it’s profitable for them. When we refuse to look at the big picture…all attempts to fix individual problems will be bandaid effects.
He was doing so good, then the host breaks in and sort of brings the audience at large back in, but still feels like an interruption to the guest, especially for senior doctor guests. They can talk for 90 minutes usually without a break.
The problem is the System (that has mental problems). We need to move to post-Capitalism. Insanity - continuing with Capitalism (individualism) & expecting the mental disorders to improve ;) Change "In god we TRUST" to "In cooperation we TRUST" & the US mental disorder will improve :)
Thats a narcissist view point to put a timer on a tragedy of this magnitude or level, what an unfeeling judgement!!!!!!!!! Empathy is a joke for some of us!!!!!!!!!😮😮😮😮😮😮
Another supposed, self-appointed expert who really is fishing in the dark, switching his thoughts, trying to cover the whole territory by contradictions which cannot be reconciled. Listener. Beware.
What? Are you talking about Chris Palmer? Do you know more than him? Or are you talking about the host. He is seeking knowledge. You are being unduly harsh, or acting as if you know more than everybody. That's sad.
to@almasalazar8318. You have a fair point. This work is the means by which individuals begin to find expression of their personal situation, for which doctors don't care to find answers. Sadly many aspects of many societies are unhealthy. Whatever the cause of personal disruption, it is exactly this type of work that funnels information and removes much of the associated vulnerability isolation causes. Begin somewhere, when all else is failing. Clearing the headspace helps.

People used preserve food in various ways without refrigeration and I presume it was meat mostly. Energy dense.
Carbs in our regurlar diet came 10-12.000 years ago and that represents 0.01% of human evolution.

Sugar and alcohol are obviously terrible for mental health. This is super interesting, though. I am going to read up on the research. Thank you!
What about if you believe you have no serotonin or dopamine, or a big shortage?
Maybe you have ADHD. You need teating done.
Fasting Mimicking diet = a diet that promotes the benefits of fasting without actually fasting. Strange that the host doesn't understand that. Also, fasting is not a component of Keto but can be done in conjunction with it.
Not strange...you CAN not know stuff. No one knows everything.
It clearly shows when a host is trying to look smart vs actually being interested in the truth
I did not find that at all. You need some KETO dude.

No sugar. no grains!
A 14 day allowance for grief is ludicrous. It is old fashioned grief, even primitive people have a stipulated long period, maybe a year where everyone makes allowances for you. It is a great idea. It is to be expected, there would be something wrong with you if you did NOT go through it.
Thank u
So no the criteria for MDD would not be given due to grief. Also people can be severely sad but not have clinically significant functional impairments in daily activities so no diagnosis.
However I agree that food is a huge factor and also that chemical
Imbalance is not true.
Overall great podcast
Also exercise is proven to be just as effective as pills.
Exercise running and lifting and avoiding ultra processed foods is amazing
I'm on quetiapine for very bad Anxiety can I still take glycine could you answer please.
How do I increase my ATP and mitochondria? I have leaky gut.
I wonder how Keto would affect this
I believe that. Because the earth is a cespool.
Well... one round of antibiotics will also kill off the gut and cause people to spin their diet then decisions the same way
Travmatic events change everything in the body, and the Brain, perception, ect..so i would say it is all depend in what kind of situation Person is, sitting with irational fear was never good for me, because it was body that it was so inflamed..and when this irational fear kick in, oh gosh, you become disable, because body is missing nutrition
So always find i help, but keto and carnivore are definetly the tools to get out from this terible condition ;)
All the best 🙏
Or get to know the living God through Jesus Christ, repentance and forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life! No more fear of death, at all! ( fear of the physical process, ➡️ natural and normal, but complete peace regarding what comes after).
No mention of seed oils? No discussion of meat?
Doesn't the word " keto diet" assume that?
I don't know why I keep looking for hope when we're not going to evolve to level required for at least another three generations.
Have a family member or friend help and be sure you’re safe. A clean diet can be done on your own if you understand it. ♥️
Please Dr Palmer change this Stigma!
You can't fix a metablic deficiency with a talk therapy intervention.
Why would you limit red meat if you're concerned about heart health?
If you were really concerned about heart health and cancer risk etc you'd entirely limit animal products period?
@@vthomas375 No, you'd limit plants and carbs
Why would you want to limit plants and carbs over animal products for cancer and heart disease risk reduction. What and where is the evidence for that?
@@vthomas375 Read The Cancer Code by Dr. Jason Fung. Carbs kill.

Can keto or carnivore help with borderline personality?
Check out the two interviews Dr. Chris Palmer did with Dr. Ken Berry.

yes, there are a couple of youtube videos showing carnivore reversed BP
Eating a donut (assuming he is referring to a wheat flour and sugar donut type) once a week but trying to prevent heart disease ... what is the thinking? Indulgence vs science? I don't get it 😕
He should cut out donuts and add more red meat and read the latest research on red meat consumption.
Can it cure homelessness?
36:18 in. You’re picking on Halo Top? That’s the least harmless of the ice cream options.
Do we still think that red meat consumption is healthy?
Of course. Look into the carnivore diet. It has amazing results.
I thought all psychiatrists were like Nurse Ratched.

Did the host just say, red meat is worse for him than a donut 🤔
I want to mention that doughnuts do have trans fat, and I would be more concerned with that and your family history of heart issues over red meat consumption. I have a degree in nutrition. Trans fat spikes heart issues beyond comprehension.
Meat/beef consumption is good for the heart, and the entire human body.
No, they’re not!
Lack of morality.
The options are trash. 😊

The problem is the System (that has mental problems). We need to move to post-Capitalism.

to@almasalazar8318.
