Dragonball is just so satisfying. I love how Goku pretty much starts with nothing, and ends with him being surrounded by his friends and family. No one gets left behind.
Lmao ikr LIKE goku inst just some god In dragon ball orginal hes just some kid. He isn't some overpowered man defeating god. Hes a kid who got STRONG THREW hard work. This is why the orginal dragon ball is the best
@The Slow Bro Exactly. How awesome would it been to play the original DB story with that mechanic? Hell, it would've made the Genkidama scene from the Buu Arc all the more impactful seeing all the friends we, as Goku, made along the way joining to defeat this final enemy.
And that would be generous to say. Sometimes, the story is forced so they can justify intense figths. Examples: - Bulma suggests using the Dragon Balls to find the androids and destroy them before everything happens. No one agrees because "but I wanna figth 😢", putting tye entire planet and universe in risk and showing how stupidly immature and selfish our characters can be just to get the pleasure to get beaten to death by some androids. - Exactly the same that before, but instead of androids and Bulma, Majin Buu and the Supreme Kai lmao
that would be accurate to some though (i’m part of that some) since it seems a lot of the fan base dismisses the adventures pre adult goku as nothing at least to me
@Majin Melon the fact that you "raged" while watching the video cleary shows that you are the target group for DBZ. juvenile, simplistic and overall brainless
@Majin Melon No, it does not. Dragon Ball felt like watching a kid going on the adventure and seeking fun, learning and growing up, meeting new people, exploring what the world has to offer. Dragon Ball Z felt like deja Vu all the fucking time. Bad guy shows up, wants to destroy the world, and our characters have to stop him. That's all Z was, with maybe the final chapters being mostly about Gohan breaking the tedium slightly.
i hear many people skip dragonball when they wanna get into the franchise which is a huge shame because wherever its better then dbz or not, its a great show and one people should give atleast a try
I agree. Similar to The Act Man, I didn't watch Dragon Ball for many many years after DBZ, and after watching it, seeing the emotional connection between characters was awesome. It's a shame there will be some people who think that Dragon Ball is irrelevant, I've even known some people who thought DBZ was the original series and thought DB was like a spin off, and wrote it off.
Vegeta in my opinion is one of those characters that brought more but he didn't have to be an alien. He could have been an earthling because he and goku and their people are basically space wukongs. There could have been an island inspired by flower fruit mountain from a Chinese classic journey to the west. That could be the place where goku and vegeta originated from.
@Tobias Bettini oooooh ok, cool. Thanks for the much needed lesson. And thanks 😁. Not gonna lie now that I think about it I think it would have been alot cooler if vegeta was earth bound. But hey fan manga multi verse lol.
@Tobias Bettini also i think there would be less screaming and unbalanced power scaling. Just pure martial arts and tactics. Also magic. I find that more interesting too many new hair color changes lately.
here's a riddle for you.... Who's Tambourine???? Answer: THE FIRST GUY TO KILL Krililin VOICED BY THE SAME GUY WHO VOICE THE GUY THAT KILLED Krililin ON NEMEK.... So what are u saying??? Answer: APPARENTLY Ryusei Nakao DOESN'T LIKE LUFFY @ALL OR ONE PIECE IN GENERAL....
thats a shame...while z has some great story developments, it fell into the marketing simplistic bin with transformations power beams and kid characters with massive power for gags while og db had real martial arts teachings to inspire that we learned alongside goku that we could apply to our own life like the bell stuff with popo and the korin training heck even roshi's training...kami was actually teaching goku real stuff instead of fake cartoon logic
Super had really boring arcs in terms of story telling. Beerus, return of Frieza, champa tournament and even tournament of power weren’t great stories at all. The only decent one was goku black. It has that cell saga charm. That being said TOP had some of the best transformations to date. Mastered Ultra instinct, Kale Beserker, blue evolution (I know most people think that it hardly compares but I like it) and toppos god of destruction, which arguably was one of the scariest transformations of all db. Toppo seemed unstoppable. Hopefully the return of super can focus on story again. Because if not db is doomed. As story is truly the only thing that keeps a tv show alive. I recommend Toei going back to a slightly more adult root as it’s fanbase has all grown up. They should do it the way samurai jack did in season 5
@@deanmccrorie3461 Only reason I don't mid Super is because of beerus he is such dope character and wish they have done more with him instead of just making this multiverse crap.
@Gabriel 2020 I have to disagree with you saying that they made Goku a god in DBZ. If anything, DBS made Goku a god more than DBZ did. He became a super saiyan god in that series.
as someone who watches all of it, I can admit one piece lost focus after the war and timeskip and has yet to gain back its footing..dragonball after the jr. fight and og ending lost its purpose...I prefer pre z dragonball and pre timeskip one piece but at the same time I prefer post timeskip naruto way more cause it gained focus and stopped being as cliché...I think where dragonball and one piece lost their meaning and purposes instead choosing to become milked naruto gained one when originally it didn't have one....just my opinion...
Cant forget naruto people say hunter x hunter did shounen different but to me original naruto did it first story was awesome took shounen tropes and did them differently but as for naruto shippuden well just another db like clone
The entire manga was originally titled "Dragon Ball". The whole reason the Dragon Ball Z anime was created was because Toriyama's editor was unsatisfied with the production of the original Dragon Ball anime, feeling it didn't properly reflect the manga. In a way, i see what he was talking about. The Dragon Ball anime had the producer from the Dr. Slump anime, which made sense in the beginning. But Toriyama went from focusing purely on comedy to focusing more on martial arts and action. It went from initially having comical and cowardly villains like Pilaf and Boss Rabbit to more serious and ruthless villains like the Red Ribbon Army, Tao Pai Pai, and Piccolo Daimao. Interestingly enough, the Dragon Ball anime had overall better filler material. Whereas the filler in the Dragon Ball Z anime was usually contradictory and often felt like it was slowing down the pace of the story, the filler in the Dragon Ball anime usually filled in gaps and sometimes even expanded on stuff from the manga.
Totally agree with filler stuff. Recently started reading Manga and surprised to see that many interesting stuff from DB were filler. DB truly feels nostalgic if given a read from the beginning.
you know, what you just said explains why i feel like db and dbz have the same amount of filler but back in my mind i knew it wasn´t true but i couldn´t put a finger on it until i saw this comment.
@@blauwbeer556 DB's filler tends to be better than most of DBZ's. Because they have more time skips or long periods of downtime to work in story arcs and they care enough to include past characters (or introduce the next antagonists early sometimes). DBZ does this in the Saiyan and Freeza arc (before they reach Namek) but from then on there's never enough time to put a story arc so most filler are either isolated episodes most of which aren't good and sometimes padding inserted into the fights that don't do they any favor. The Z writing team just seems out of creativity for the later arcs, too. They could have done more with Gohan's superhero phase in the Buu saga, or they could have made better use of the 3 years of training before the androids, but most stuff they came up with during these periods were just so boring. There's nothing like Goku traveling the world alone on foot between the RR Army arc and the next budokai, or Gohan learning to survive after Piccolo leaves him to his own devices.
Goku lost every tournament except the last one in the original series, and even in the beginning of Z, his power level was lower than Piccolo's. Even when he was pulling crap out of his ass back then, it wasn't always enough.
@@SBaby But Goku by the end of DB he still became the strongest. So nothing changed. Goku still loses fights after DB and still trains to become stronger(except in GT because reasons)
The key word there being the END of Dragon Ball. And even that's debatable, because as I said before, right in the beginning of Z, he's still weaker than Piccolo. You could argue that he got lucky in the last fight against him.
The Act Man RIP Kobe I don’t know if you watch sports but he was my Idol and the only reason I liked sports until I first watched a SuperBowl two years ago
yeah Henoc, Goku did the Crocodile Dundee Pat Test to see her gender.... He also did that to his future wife...... when she was 10 BUT HE WAS 12 SO ITS ALL GOOD RIGHT??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, no.......
I'm almost 34 year old. I've just watched first Dragon Ball series (in original and without censorship) after 21 years. I was afraid that it would have been too childish but luckily I was so wrong about this. I'm glad I did it. So many good memories from my childhood were refreshed during watching. I can remember that I've always loved DB 1 for the adventures, humor and marvelous martial art techniques. What I've discovered now is that DB has its depth and philosophy which all brings too honesty, friendship, honor, humbleness and most of all life adoration. That last thing escpecially in Goku's performence. I love watching him enjoying life, he's so positive attitude can be very inspiring to others. I lost my job last month. I live alone in a big city. There is pandemic state. I've been fighting with depression for 18 years. I should be down in the dumps now but instead I feel ... better than before for sure. I can see my situation more in silver linings. I am glad that what I still have and I appreciate my phisical condition; that I can run run as fast as I can again and f..k all restrictions and just enjoy the life. Like the words of DB say "live life to the fullest". Sory for my english, I'm Pole.
I'm about the same age as you and I just watched it for the first time as well! Besides what you mention and the greater emphasis on friendships and exploring a wild and fantastical world, the battle arcs themselves are absolutely top notch. I think a lot of people assume watching Dragon Ball after DBZ would feel 'anti-climactic' or like it is 'low-powered', but that isn't the case at all. In particular I'd say that the climactic confrontations with Tao Pai Pai and King Piccolo are better paced and more dramatic than anything in DBZ. Even though DB is a more humorous and lighthearted series, the big bad guys are treated very seriously, and they don't feel "low-powered" or "not a threat" in the slightest.
8:02 & 17:56 specifically those WHOLE Sections THank you FRGGIN Thank you!! I love both series but the fights in DBZ are so repetitive later on that me and my friends made a drinking game out of it at a con we were at. Every fight practically devolved into rapid fire punching and kicking blast here blast there power up power up stare stare maybe a flashback charge On the next ep of.. hahaha I OG DB more for all the points you brought up and also seeing and feeling the skill of each fighter was something I really loved. Great video!
Funfact, Trunks used his Sword, his signaturweapon exactly two Times. And the Z Sword was even worst. He wasnt even able to draw a swordfight anymore, for some reason
Hey Jax. Thanks for making that vid of Goku and Vegeta's training. And if it would work in real life or not. You actually really inspired me and got me to get up and going.

@@justarandomguywholikesanimeAll the characters left in the dust from the original dragon ball always leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Killin used to be Goku's rival, always just one step behind him. But then Vegeta gets introduced and replaces Killin as Goku's rival, consequentially he goes from someone who was always Goku's equal to undeniably inferior.
@@BeyondTrash-xe1vs yeah exactly. Another character is Tien Shinhan. Dude, Tien used to be one of the strongest DB characters, where at one point he was almost as strong as Goku.
Ehh, it only becomes better than DBZ once the Freeza saga ends. It was originally where he planned to stop but it was such a hit he was pretty much outright forced to continue it. Until that point DBZ wins, but after that saga... There is some real open debate for it that I could agree with for DB being better.
Yeah, I always used to argue that DBZ lost its way when the characters got so powerful. I mean, Vegeta blows up an entire planet with his finger the first time we ever see him, and much later his mind is blown when somebody causes an earthquake. It got to the point where it never really felt like there were any stakes.
Mr. X nothing is really unique. Everything is technically ripping off something in some way. It’s impossible to be 100% unique. For example you could say that Iron Man is just a rip off of Batman
And original DB is so unappreciated last time kid Goku(not including GT Goku) was in a game was over a decade ago . Even though a dragon ball game comes out every year. Like it would be a breath of fresh air if they adapted the original story in games
the saiyan arc as a whole and the freeza arc may be better than anything in og but the rest of z is so trash including fillers I can see how someone thinks this way
Asmosis Jones that is fair. Come to think about it, it is like the creators were making stronger enemies and more explosive just for the sake of such. And it does get very repetitive after sometime. Personally, I love it bc the action intrigues me.
@@wegoku7274 Cell is one of the weaker villains of series tbh. Frieza and Vegeta were better and more interesting antagonists. Buu being the worst imo.
i love the db and dbz story for sure and hell i love dbz hell gt and parts of super but not much are all fine for me..but og had a feeling especially the last 2 arcs that just made me so happy that i wish the show continued..it became so lame in dbz later on after freeza...too much bloated material......i love episodes 90-148 of original dragonball..to me thats the show at its best..you get tenshinhan's arc then the daimao stuff and goku grows up and fights his son for the title of strongest...early dbz works for me not going to lie but db was special in its own way..the goku fight vs jr. is still my fave..it had it all...goku vs vegeta is solid too...i really think the issue with later dbz for me is its about trunks vegeta and mr satan and gohan and i just did not care...those characters do not do it for me...db is about goku and thats how it needs to be...i get why dbz is popular though...it has great characters
Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z share the same musical style though. Unless you’re referring to the music of the English dubs for Dragon Ball Z. They’re pretty nonstop
Archus orez Damn i sure hope those aren’t the same “objective facts” the other guy was talkin about. Lets see, Goku and Vegeta show? So I guess Piccolos redemption arc seen throughout the Saiyan and Freiza saga didn’t happen? Or Piccolos bond w/ Gohan that was shown in filler and non-filler the entire damn series? How bout Gohan? Entire movies centered around him. Main villains that he kills. An entire series of growth and progression. But that’s not enough because Yamcha and Tien (whose character arcs were already fulfilled by the end of DB) didn’t get enough spotlight? Kamehameha is the only move that exists in DBZ... The guy you just claimed was the only other relevant character in the show has never shot a Kamehameha in his life. Some of the most fan fav attacks are things like Hellzone grenade or spirit sword or that rainbow thingy from Gogeta.
Random fact: Toriyama stated that the only reason why he introduced power levels in the show was to show how unreliable they are. I don't know why he did that, but its probably something about how nothing is set in stone if you try hard enough? That or hes just a giant troll
The only time I felt that was a thing was the fight between Raditz vs Goku and Piccolo. Raditz bragged that he was stronger, he had the higher power level; (a power level of 1000-or was it 1200?) and while Goku and Piccolo were weaker, at first, but when they were charging up their attacks they got a whole lot stronger. Raditz focused too much attention on power levels and not enough on strategy or technique.
The first part of Z always felt like it was meant to be a bookend to Dragonball to explain where Goku came from and end the series, but it was just so successful that it kept going.
The insane power escalation was doomed to happen from the start. By the end of the original Journey to the West Son Goku was literally battling and crushing the heavens
I remember telling myself that “I’m not a real dragon ball fan since I never watched DB” And I talked myself almost out it by saying “but there is no super saiyan.” But pushes on and I know why i love the show more than Z. It because of character growth... ...Great ape
The Red Ribbon Army saga was a legitimately good story arc. Reminds me of inspector gadget and Dr. Claw. That’s when the series became a legit hero vs. villain story.
The villains were also very memorable. General Blue was a damn hateable but loveable slab of dude, while Mao's introduction couldn't have been done any better.
Dragon Ball: Globetrotting adventure in a bonkers version of our planet. DBZ: Powerful bad guy shows up; defeat bad guy; wait for badder, most powerful enemy to show up, defeat, repeat.
The scene where goku saw his grandpa gohan again almost made me cry cause it reminded me he was still a young boy despite everything he's accomplished And felt like goku really was exploring a vast earth learning its secrets and *actual martial arts techniques* I feel like when we hit z all technique went away and it just became about power levels alone Edit: so glad how much he addressed these after watching
They got rid of the power levels after Freeza IIRC, It was a bad idea in my opinion (the power level stuff). The Cell saga is the best in DBZ in my opinion, especially early on, the Buu Saga being the weakest (by that time everyone expect the Saiyans were almost useless).
@@Meneldil Yes they got rid of the exact number of power level but you can't deny it's still there you know when someone is stronger than the other guys.
@@Meneldilthe fact that you believe Buu saga is the weakest because everyone but the saiyans are almost useless when that also applies to the other 3 sagas of Z, specially saiyan saga, where the entire cast of characters that we saw train and overcome so many obstacles are so pathetic that they couldn't even get a minor villain (Nappa/ tired is exactly the reason why there is still people who thinks any of the Z sagas is somehow good or have something to rescue when compared to DB. All of Z sagas are the same, plain and based on nothing else that plain ass screams and cheap powerups, that's what the franchise became when moved from DB to DBZ
@@crossknight1490 No it doesn't apply to them, no that one had the others involved quite a bit. They aren't pathetic Nappa was just insanely powerful which makes sense (wrong they are good and do have something compared to DB. No they aren't, they aren't plain and based on nothing else and the screams aren't plain and the powerups aren't cheap, wrong absolutely wrong
This is one of the things I liked about GT, it tried to blend the OG and Z together and although most of the ideas were executed really sloppy, It did have it's moments. Instead of finding the black star balls in a short amount of time they go on adventurous journeys to find them. It didn't have super saiyan forms in every battle, it gave Oozaru more meaning because after super saiyan came in Z Oozaru was just pushed to the side and is never seen again throughout the rest of the series or movies but in GT when Goku achieves Super Saiyan 4 he masters' Oozaru making it his ultimate form. There were more fighting techniques that didn't involve big energy blasts such as Goku's spin technique against Oceanous Shenron and Haze Shenron's toxin to weaken opponents and how the shadow dragons were created by the misuse of the dragon balls and how Shenron leaves because of it.
Yeah, GT was absolutely sloppy, and being marketed at a much younger audience definitely hurt it. It did definitely have good aspects about it though, and I feel like in another world GT could've been a fantastic series.
@@anonymousman1282 Worth watching? I mean, I gave it a shot and couldn't finish it. And that's coming from someone who watched every single episode in DB and DBZ. I also like OG db the most, but thats purely because I was a small ass kid when I first watched it, so it holds a special place in my heart. It's definitely worth checking out, GT has some cool ideas, like the reintroduction of the saiyan monkey form, or super saiyan 4. But as I said, I wasn't able to finish it, after about halfway in I chose to skip straight to all the fight scenes because I had lost all interest...
U just started a war Edit: Since this is actually getting attention I think I’ll add my own opinion. I think DB is the best one of all. Before I say why I think we should address a problem DB as a whole faces. It’s what us weeb analyst calls the escalation problem. It basically boils down to Shounen Jump, especially Dragonball, feeling the need to up the stakes by raising power levels. This leads to fights becoming more similar in their choreography and it is shown the most in DBZ and DBS. Dragonball never really had this problem because, as addressed in the video, Japanese anime was do or die and Akira didn’t expect it to gain the traction that it did so when DB finished I think Akira was confused on where to take the series and eventually fell into the escalation problem by adding saiyans and galaxies and Kais and what-not. Not to say that all the fights are bad. DBZ is still a classic with all the memorable villains and Goku vs Jiren and Goku vs Hit were some of the most entertaining fights I’ve seen in a while. Also, in DBZ I think adding the hierarchy of kais and Gods of Destruction were a good add. PS: Thanks for noticing me Act Man
I’ve always treated almost like different franchises at times. Dragon ball is really just a fun martial arts adventure story. While Z is more of a sci-fi action drama. Personally I’ve always preferred Z but it’s completely rational to prefer the original. Only time I REALLY disagree is when people say GT is better than Super.
@@Storm_280 Yeah, that shit was depressing. Though at the same time they made bulma the most powerful being in existence since her time machine creates entire new overgods.
man wow, this was a great watch. Dragonball has such a charm to it that’s so different than Z, it’s hard for me to really compare them because they scratch 2 completely different itches. DB feels so innocent, and crude at the same time. almost endearingly juvenile. that combined with the characters we all become genuinely invested in makes such a fun show
Agreed. I cant even really compare the two. I love both of them for completely different reasons. I wont flat out say dragonball is better than Z. But, it holds a special place in my heart. I used to sit down with my dad every weekday and watch the toonami block. So much Great nostalgia.
I am one of the few in America that actually started watching DragonBall original before Z... And till this day right now, I much prefer the original over the Z.... Thank you for this video. The original was so adventurous and had so much build up. And all the characters had memorable moments
I grew up in East Asia while reading the manga as they came! When I noticed people here have never read original, pre-Raditz manga, I was shocked. They are so good!
Dragonball was fantastic due to the fact it was more...centered. Took itself serious but not too serious. But DBZ pushed that bitch to a new level. Shit got ridiculous but I guess I love the ridiculousness. Also Cell Saga is the best saga of all time don't @ me.
Frieza saga made super saiyan special, cell saga made it watered down and buu saga dam near made it useless, they didnt even scream into it anymore. Seriously, Gohan didnt need to go ssj for human thugs on his way to school, he couldve dealt with them in his base so fast nobody knew it was him.. ssj was nerfed so bad and Broly proved that even more
I’ve always preferred Dragon Ball over DBZ. I just love the more simple and fun tone of the show than the repetitive plot of “save the world and beat the bad guy” that DBZ has.
I just liked how the focus wasnt on all of the alines. Nearly everyone was important in draginball EVEN YAJIROBE!!!!!!!!!!!! I didnt know he was badass
Yajirobe was dope. It took 3 straight days of running around before Goku could catch Korin in basically a game of Tag, Yamaha was dating Burma for most of Dragon Ball, which you’d never be able to tell from watching DBZ. For a split second, even Krillin was stronger than Goku, I thought it was cap when Krillin said that in DBZ.
All the characters were interesting and relevant, and they didn't rely on who had the highest power level, it was who had the most fighting experience, and was the best at it. Chi Chi was cool, and not annoying too. And kid Goku is probably smarter than adult Goku
I think the biggest thing people honestly miss about the series and I don’t see how is that DB was about the human side and martial arts learning about your body and mind then DBZ is about learning about ki and energy and super is about exploring heritage and legend the next arc is exploring the correlation between all of these and how you can overcome not being able to use them.
7:50 This is why I appreciate Dragon Ball more than Z. DBZ is great but it just didn't have the same "heart" as DB. It's part of why I thought the scenes of Piccolo training Gohan in DBZ were so great. When Gohan starts to learn to be independent like kid Goku always was, it had that light hearted tone of adventure. That's part of why I couldn't watch Kai also, they cut down so much of the filler but with that went so much character building.
FreakRunner “there! We made it EXACTLY like the Manga! Purists will love it!” “But you shaved off character building!! Doesn’t 16’s Sacrifice to Gohan rekindle memories of that Robot that Gohan got trapped in a cave and helped him despite its insistence to power down in peace?? Doesn’t it make the rage out more effective!?!” “....durrr?”
I love GT and Super, but the original Dragon Ball is without a single doubt my absolute favourite of the 4. After DB being my favourite... I really don't know how my order goes, I love all 3 series and Z has a lot of good stuff but there's also a lot about it I don't like.. You know, I think I like Super more than Z, if feels so much more like the original DB and actually gives attention to the side characters.
@@skeletor1177 I think the Manga fight with Zamasu was better. we got God Vegeta out of that long before Broly & I think Gohan vs. Kelfa would have been cool to see in the Anime. both are okay. I tend to blend the two to get my own better cannon out of it.
in most things people do not like to pay close attention to details, simplicity is key when it comes to making the most profits overall for most companies. For DBZ they over worked Akira so to keep with his creativity and longevity of his work he probably changed to focus on making something that would grab most audience attention all over the world in the long run. The proof is obvious DB is amazing but DBZ is remembered best, there is a reason for that. DBZ will hype more people up than DB would. Even though I personally love both the same I find my self coming back to DBZ clips any time and never DB. DBZ is way more profitable and the business can see that. Thats why all these other amines have the same concepts and other excellent animes die out even if they were meant to be short like death note... Making the most money is what matters to businesses for example In most gaming businesses they rather make you pay for micro transactions because they can make nearly 3 times the profits. This method stops them from making an excellent game majority of the time for that extra buck (Battle front II remake is a prime example of this)...
Z just had way better characters, plots and skills. Arguing one is better because its more realistic martial arts or it feels more like a group adventure is just not even an argument. That argument is more they are two very different shows and that's because they are. There is a bunch of solid reasons DBZ is by far the best entry but some cant seem to accept it haha.
@@Midgar88 z did not have a better plot lmao and realistic martial arts(Especially since you know DragonBall is about FIGHTING) and group adventure is an argument, because it's why people like a show. It didn't have better characters either, if Z actually spent time on Tien, Tiens redemption arc would be much better than vegeta's
Raheb No Even in OG dragon ball there were still so many things Goku hadn’t seen. Lipstick being one of them, that’s why he fought Bulma’s lips were bleeding. I mean compared to when he was a kid and had to Pat girls and boys to tell their gender near the ending of OG dragon ball he stopped doing it.
@Ethan Huckie Viterbo Db the character growth and humor Dbz the action Dbs has a bit of both the og and z 4. GT only the character design I like but the creator of db wasn’t involved with it I think.
Geronimo I guess I can see why u like it more but some of things he said had problems like collecting dragon balls the story not being young and adventurous characters in dbz not learning anything and other things
@5:50: "No way in hell they would've gotten away with that nowadays." Honestly, current-day anime gets away with worse. Sword Art Online has some incredibly crass stuff, and Shimoneta is bugfuck crazy.
Dragon Ball: focusing on martial arts. Dragon Ball Z: focusing on alien realms, Sci-fi stuff, supernatural powers, & Godlike abilities. Edit: thanks for 100 likes, please make it to 200+.
Dragon Ball = Off The Wall Dragon Ball Z = Thriller Seriously, Michael Jackson's Off The Wall set the foundation for Thriller to exist. However, the success of that album blew the doors off of everything that people forgot just how successful Off The Wall was. I feel the same way about DB vs. DBZ. The story was far more richer in the OG series compared to Z. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both series. However, the character growth, participation and grand journey the heroes took throughout the world (not universe) was fantastic! Great video and I'm glad I found your channel because of it!
I mean, Thriller still is amazing for the fact that it was the sort of origin for pop. DBZ while popular really has a lot of issues if you really think about it.
When you mentioned all of the screaming in Dragonball Z, I couldn’t help but think of the big fish in the Spongebob episode The Fry Cook Games where he goes, “Aah...”.
This video perfectly sums up why I've always loved OG DB and lost interest DBZ as I got older. To people understand narrative progression/pacing and character development, it's easy to see that DB is better written overall. But most people don't have that understanding of narrative structure, they can't understand that high stakes doesn't mean high drama or better drama.
26:54 I forgot if this happened in the anime, but in the manga, Chaotsu said Nappa was too strong for his powers to paralyze him. That alone not only proves your point, but it also creates a plot hole in DBS when Chaotsu was able to at least slow down Goku.
23:45 'They might be telling us the powerlevels are higher, but the feats are the same' This is what I keep telling the Power level fanatic crowd. King Piccolo kicking someone into a mountainside and have the mountain collapse on the fighter has the same physical effect as when Goku kicks Vegeta into a mountain. Or when Frieza kicks Piccolo into a mountain. Or Goku kicks Broly into a mountain. I can't buy the bullcrap around 'Yeah Goku can lift fifteen ceptillion tons and sneeze the galaxy into oblivion'. Nah... he's pretty much as strong as he was when he was a kid and pushed a giant boulder across the ground. None of the feats of Strength in DBZ matches the supposed power of the individual.
15:01 "It seems like Toriyama thought - with each new saga he had to increase the drama vertically" shows the longest most vertical foreheads in the anime. I thought that was really funny.
I think a big part of why dbz is more popular is because a lot of people saw it first and db second as toonami was how many people got their anime back in the day and dbz aired there before db so it leaves a huge impact as their introduction into the series and anime in general.
There's only so many times you can make a number bigger, and make someone getting a different colour interesting. Like hell, they already established at the beginning of Z that jobbers like Raditz could annihilate planets. Best parts of DBZ were the character moments and more lax funny fillers.
I disagree on the funny fillers. The best fillers were things like Gohan's adventure, which actually built up his character. Ultimately, t went nowhere
Facts...stuff like marron on korin tower or goku driving or freaking vegeta and blooma being cute for moments after namek or gohan being alone training for the saiyans..that stuff is great..
you don't have any dragon ball Z manga because those aren't a thing. The story of DBZ in the manga starts at chapter 194 or 195 of the DRAGON BALL manga... if you have all of the db manga volumes you have all the volumes where dbz took place too...
Toriyama actually wanted to finish the series much earlier after the Freezer saga (Freezer is strongest in the universe, Goku becomes Super Sayajin, that would have been the end). However, he was pushed to continue drawing. I'm not sure but this might be also the reason why he killed off Goku in the Cell saga and handed the torch to Gohan, to finally end it. But as we know it didn't work and he had to draw the whole Boo saga. Fun fact: Cell is Toriyama's least favorite character. The reason being his dots. Everytime he finished drawing a page, he noticed he had forgotten to draw the dots.
This isn’t wholly true. While Toriyama played with the idea of ending the story at various points, he was never pressured to continue. The only time he seriously considered ending the series was with the Boo arc

This is why the orginal dragon ball is the best
To simplify: In Dragonball, the fights were to supplement the story while Z offers story to supplement intense fights.
The Slow Bro They should’ve at least included the Goku VS Piccolo fight instead of having Goku just daydreaming
@The Slow Bro Exactly. How awesome would it been to play the original DB story with that mechanic? Hell, it would've made the Genkidama scene from the Buu Arc all the more impactful seeing all the friends we, as Goku, made along the way joining to defeat this final enemy.
@The Slow Bro I have been saying this for a while, game would have been 1000x more epic if you started as kid Goku. Ahh I want it to xD
goku vs king pikkoro both times his fight with tenshinhan and ma-junior are still the best fights in the entire series....
And that would be generous to say. Sometimes, the story is forced so they can justify intense figths. Examples:
- Bulma suggests using the Dragon Balls to find the androids and destroy them before everything happens.
My god the original soundtrack for Dragon Ball is so beautiful.

@Majin Melon DBZ loses anything remotely adventurous after the Namek Saga imo.

it also helps the viewer understand better Y when Krillin died on Nemek goku was so emotional...
Is it bad that I know exactly where that profile picture came from?
i would, its terrible
I gave it a try. Just didn't like it, so I'll be skipping it anyway.
“But once Vegeta *c a m e* “
Hehehe, you evil guy.

I agree. DB feels so much more like an adventure, while DBZ kinda feels like a series of boss fights with filler in between.
db feels like goku's journey to becoming a hero and man...dbz is balancing trying to tell goku gohan and vegeta's stories
Except for the freeza saga. That had the old Dragonball spirit.
@Lord Kuuga dbgt is the worse.

@@frickinfrick8141 I thought of bender when i saw your post.
Whereas the filler in the Dragon Ball Z anime was usually contradictory and often felt like it was slowing down the pace of the story, the filler in the Dragon Ball anime usually filled in gaps and sometimes even expanded on stuff from the manga.
z did have some good filler to from what I hear
Totally agree with filler stuff. Recently started reading Manga and surprised to see that many interesting stuff from DB were filler. DB truly feels nostalgic if given a read from the beginning.
you know, what you just said explains why i feel like db and dbz have the same amount of filler but back in my mind i knew it wasn´t true but i couldn´t put a finger on it until i saw this comment.
Dragon ball and dragon ball z have way more enjoyable filler than most shows.

Maybe, but the plot didn't bear that out. The only way to beat a more powerful opponent in Z was to become more powerful than he was.
He gives it away with fluctuating power at the point of attack. Concentrated power is the message.

Yes
Also the amount of suspense of the Nouva Shenron fight is perfect
Yeah, GT was absolutely sloppy, and being marketed at a much younger audience definitely hurt it. It did definitely have good aspects about it though, and I feel like in another world GT could've been a fantastic series.
Is gt worth watching. I like both db and dbz but db more.

Lol sayain saga reference 😂
U just started a war
Edit: Since this is actually getting attention I think I’ll add my own opinion.
PS: Thanks for noticing me Act Man
Your pfp works well with that comment
A war? Do people think Z is better? I'm lost, Z is good but it holds no candle to Dragon Ball

I won’t go that far but GT has a charm on me it isn’t the best but I like it
Aiden Negron it had some good aspects like SSJ4 but I think over all it can’t compete with the other entries.
Lol I love how people say super is better when they literally erased a timeline that trunks tried so hard to protect...
GT has some better designs, I'm just a sucker for SSJ4 visually speaking.
I agree, and while I do like z better, original db will always have a place in my heart
Nate nah bro 100% agree cell saga beats all the sagas in dbz if I’m being honest
@nate

Yajirobe defeated Vegeta, so.
He was never the strongest, ore dignifiedest, but he was in fact capable and had quality.
Now he spent his time as company for the pussy.

All the characters were interesting and relevant, and they didn't rely on who had the highest power level, it was who had the most fighting experience, and was the best at it. Chi Chi was cool, and not annoying too.

I think the biggest thing people honestly miss about the series and I don’t see how is that DB was about the human side and martial arts learning about your body and mind then DBZ is about learning about ki and energy and super is about exploring heritage and legend the next arc is exploring the correlation between all of these and how you can overcome not being able to use them.
we learn more from roshi korin and popo then we do from the kais and beerus/whis..thats an issue....
*Me:* I disagree but you're entitled to your opinion
*The Internet:* "Wait that's illegal"
7:50 This is why I appreciate Dragon Ball more than Z. DBZ is great but it just didn't have the same "heart" as DB. It's part of why I thought the scenes of Piccolo training Gohan in DBZ were so great. When Gohan starts to learn to be independent like kid Goku always was, it had that light hearted tone of adventure. That's part of why I couldn't watch Kai also, they cut down so much of the filler but with that went so much character building.
FreakRunner “there! We made it EXACTLY like the Manga! Purists will love it!”
“But you shaved off character building!! Doesn’t 16’s Sacrifice to Gohan rekindle memories of that Robot that Gohan got trapped in a cave and helped him despite its insistence to power down in peace?? Doesn’t it make the rage out more effective!?!”

I always preferred DB over Z.
As for Super and GT, I don't like either.
super and gt have their moments...
The super manga is solid, it has problems but it's still okay.
The anime? burn it.
It’s the opposite the manga is trash but the anime is gold
I totally agree with this statement.
Oh Jesus. I just tried to speed read that and almost had a siezure
@@Midgar88 z did not have a better plot lmao and realistic martial arts(Especially since you know DragonBall is about FIGHTING) and group adventure is an argument, because it's why people like a show. This is what I keep telling the Power level fanatic crowd.
Yeah From Og Dragonball to the end of the Freezer Saga is the Best, for me it Should have Ended There.
This isn’t wholly true. While Toriyama played with the idea of ending the story at various points, he was never pressured to continue. The only time he seriously considered ending the series was with the Boo arc
That is just false
