Even I, a non-fan of DBZ, fully acknowledge that it has had a permanent impact on global culture. Its place in the history of manga cannot be ignored. Toriyama-san took inspiration from Chinese mythology and martial art films and created something unique, whereas so many other Jump manga come across as unoriginal (some even ripped off DBZ).
RIP Toriyama. Vegeta and Trunks are some of my favorite characters. You’ll never be forgotten 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Mine too. I never could really relate to Goku, but could with Vegeta.
I think I loved Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo, Freeza and Buu the most.
Indeed😊
I used to work at a gym and almost all the competing body builders were huge DBZ fans and would wear DBZ workout shirts.
They basically started as shy nerdy kids watching the show, which motivated them into working hard and getting jacked.
Basically described me during my teens lol
They must've done some intense 100g training with weighted clothes

I Always wear dragonball Z shirts for working out you'd be surprised at how many people complement you or go full nostalgia mode

I love how the creator got it sooo right.
He made Goku, so that his ultimate power came from his kind hearted/ protective nature, that struck a cord with all us youngsters.
Why DBZ stands test of time is because it made us feel emotions
That we never got from any other show!
Doesn't matter how much I age, i still feel the same way.
When we’re 90 years old we’ll be saying “damn I relate to Master Roshi now” 😂😂😂
Goku is the male power fantasy that we all men secretly have but will never admit
Always training to break through your limits, protecting the weak, childish but smart, knows when to get serious, goofy but with a righteous heart
Boys are born masculine by nature and when we saw a character that was everything we wanted to be, he inspired a whole generation to become like him
While kenshiro is the grandfather, goku's the father of anime. It's not far-fetched to say that goku has succeeded kenshiro and he's pretty much inspired anime in general. Without dragon ball z or goku, there would be no anime. Yeah the Miyazaki films would always be there but without dbz, anime would never be as big as it is today
@@haha-lj5sqalot of people already are
yu yu hakusho did it for me way harder. it was alot easier to relate to a teenager at the time of toonamis original run. dbz was definitely a much more impactful show overall but watching yusuke lose his shit so often and be a total goofball randomly with legitimate struggles throughout was way more relatable than goku being an unstoppable force with pure righteous virtues. i wish id seen OG dragon ball first because kid goku was much more fleshed out.
Mostly true, but DBZ isn't the only one. Yu Yu Hakusho did the same thing. Puu trying to get yusuke water while they're both dying is still the most emotional anime moment I can think of.
that moment when Goku turned Super Saiyan, everyone at my school was talking about it the next day, still the best moment in DBZ.

What a great show.
That's nice🙂
How is the relationship now ?
I’m devastated about our loss. His death was a massive tragedy and a great loss of humanity. 😔 I’m shedding tears none stop. Why I feel this feeling?
Vegeta's story and character development was truely the best and most heart wrenching of all. Even though I favoured Goku as a child, I think I appreciate Vegeta's story more now as an adult because its so much more relatable in some sense to my own life and the struggles I've had to face growing up.
I always liked Vegeta better than Goku.
I can see why someone who is that powerful would be somewhat arrogant and hard to get along with.
It also occurs in the workforce, where it can be hard for lesser employees to interact with the killers.
As a kid everyone wanted to be Goku. As adults we understand Vegeta lol.

This is a little long, but I hope this is a space people can relate. This show and those characters helped make me who I am. Things I learned from it growing up helped me overcome every challenge I have faced in my life. It inspired me to go to the gym. It taught me to be kind. To protect my family and friends. To be proud of who I am. To achieve my goals through effort. All the things my friends and family hear me say about constant improvement and becoming stronger, I learned from Toriyama and his characters. It was a life goal of mine to meet him and thank him. Obviously, I never knew him or anything, but it felt like he knew me and was always there with some advice or reminder through his characters. I've watched and rewatched his shows many times in my life. To anyone else who shares this experience, you aren't alone. Let's keep getting stronger together. Thank you from all of us, Toriyama Sensei.
"More Vegeta being sad in the rain" AMAZING LINE
toonami was the reason i became fan of gundam wing, DBZ woooot
I remember watching a documentary once about how Bruce Lee influenced many different communities from the NFL to MMA to Bodybuilding to Hip Hop culture, and I feel like you could make the same documentary for a show like Dragonball Z. If you asked any UFC fighter, Pro wrestler, NFL player, or NBA player what they’re childhood influences are, I can guarantee 9 out of 10 of them would say Dragonball Z.
No doubt
Coming back to this today. RIP to the GOAT.
A good time to watch this now
R.I.P Akira Toriyama, thank you for the memories❤
You damn near made me shed a tear with how well you explained Vegeta as a character. How he's so relatable. Why he's by far my favorite character. Thanks.
Same…
Rest in Peace Akira Toriyama, thank you for all you’ve done.
Jeezz. When you put vegeta that way, i now understand why i was sooo interested in vegeta so much more than goku, no, more that 90% of all anime characters.
Archontasius same here, didn't know why but always liked him a little more
That's because Vegeta actually has character to Develop while Goku has some how regressed the small amount of character he had going into Super to the point of annoyance.
I occasionally come back to this video just to skip to the Vegeta bit. I don't know what it is about it but it just feels to powerful with your narration and the music. It's inspiring. And no one to me in DBZ is as inspiring as Vegeta. The only character that struggled and changed throughout the story. Thus making him the most human and relatable to watch. Despite never winning, to me he was still the best and probably 60% of the reason I was so hooked on the show back then as a kid watching it on Toonami.
Kudos to this awesome video ! Thank you so much for making it (:. It makes me feel good.

I'm late to the party, but this is a great video! Thank you for creating it. Vegeta's arc was indeed one of the greatest not only in Dragon Ball Z, but also anime or heck TV in general. He is perhaps the deepest character in the series, with the most growth by far. It's amazing to see who he is in Super and compare it to the start of DBZ.
I was born in 2005 and I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with this show.
It’s normal. Because it’s the best anime of all time.
@Kaiyou IT's just a fucking anime. It"s artificial.
I think it has a timeless quality to it. Its not a product of the 90s, rather it had an impact ON the 90s and its fans in every era. Incredible superhuman feats, one-on-one fights, good vs. evil, stories of redemption, all of these concepts resonate with people regardless of the culture or time period. Most stories that get this popular age poorly and are quickly lost in a wave of generic, forgettable fads, but Dragon Ball Z is still considered one of the greatest, most epic animated series of all time over 30 years after the release of the original manga. In other words, its still a classic that anyone can get hooked on today.

Well, I'm somewhere in between getting my ass kicked by Goku and going Majin, but if my story arc is half as satisfying as Vegeta's then maybe the BS in the middle will be worth it. I doubt it
I'm thankful that in Mexico the original Dragon Ball aired for several years prior to DBZ in one of our public television channels. One of my earliest childhood memories is watching the first episode of DB in my parent's bedroom (we only had one TV in the house). I must have been around 5 or 6. I was instantly hooked. Couple years later DBZ, after watching re-run Db, was finally announced! I remember that's all we talked about in school. We were in the 2nd grade. The excitement every evening to go watch it in my parent's bedroom is something I won't ever forget. And when Goku first went SSJ...man, school was lit the next day lol. All of us kids were trying to go SSJ...we couldn't believe how cool it all was.
Yeah! I was 5ish, too, when DB aired in Mexico! It was insane 🤯 When I moved to the US; no one knew what DBZ was. No one cared. It was so weird to me. It wasn’t until I grew into my 20s that DB seemed to start getting a new audience here in the states. I’m thankful for the comeback it has made
I've heard about the hold DB has in Mexico. I think that's really cool
I think I must’ve seen the same channel on cable in Colombia lol
Damn dude, the last part about Vegeta brought a tear to my eye. His arc was always my favorite, but you put it in a way that added even more depth and made it relatable to my life in a way I’d never thought about before
How you feel about Vegeta is similar to how I feel about future Trunks. The idea of wanting to change the future was something I was unfamiliar with at the time, and as I kept watching DBZ it resonated with me on a deeper level: My goofy child brain understood the concept as a matter of wanting second chances and wanting to rectify things so that others don't go through the same ordeals. But doing either of those things will probably bring more trouble (Cell). So what should one do at that point? Should one keep trying? I sure as hell kept trying, lol.
Also, he has a sword. Characters with weapons surrounded by characters without them are cool.
And so do characters without weapons surrounded by characters with weapons.
I remembered that even my mom liked DBZ, and also we talked about the chapters with her and my sister. I Love U Mom... In South America was a huge succes and the voice cast was amazing.
Dieg0505 this is really sweet :)
My mum fucking hated it, and that I watched it haha.
My mom hated it. She overheard some lines in which Frieza talk about destroying the Saiyan race and told me and my brother that that race wars are worst possible thing and how awful this cartoon was for even mentioning something like that. Ofcourse, that only made it more badass to watch Dragonball Z.
My mom knows the lyrics to every opening and ending, my dad uses kakaroto as a name everywhere. Imagine the impact Dragon Ball had in my country.
THANK YOU AKIRA TORIYAMA
Man the vegeta bit hit me kind of hard especially recently realizing my life hasn't turned out the way I wanted
The Dragon Ball franchise is, alongside Pokémon one of the two most popular and well known anime franchises in Japanimation history.
Just discovered this video in 2022, and it's honestly the best reflection on DBZ I've ever experienced. This video is so well-made, it's beautiful. The concepts you describe and the feelings you explain are what I've always felt but never articulated. I grew up watching it on Toonami as well, so this video hits hard. Fantastic job with this, and you have also introduced me to the beautiful music of Infinity Shred. Thank you so much for making this.
Goku was a saintly pure character throughout, could call him one-dimensional sort of like Superman. I certainly took after this in terms of being honest, apposed to the world around me at the time which was full of people who said one thing and did another, had multiple faces to wear for different occasions, would lie and take short-cuts which resulted in bad situations that were blamed on others. Goku, Superman, these Jesus types showed me another way of living that was simple and right. Not to be fragmented but whole.
Vegeta was a character that grew up one way, than had to unlearn everything. The emotions the man experienced was wild, he was at the mercy of his emotions as his way of thinking was isolating, controlling, domineering. Representing the people who made up the majority of my company as a kid. Jealous, envious, pushy, aggressive, domineering. Goku was the opposite in that he did not intimidate anyone and appeared foolish or weak. Goku challenged himself, Vegeta challenged others.
These two characters played off each-other perfectly. Would not have been the same if either character was missing.
Your comment reminds me of a Dragon Ball episode of when Goku was a kid. Around the time Goku first met Babba the Fortune Teller, the Z fighters needed to beat 4 challengers if they wanted their fortune to be told.
When it was young Goku's turn to fight he faced a demonic-looking creature that had the ability to use even the tiniest impurity in your heart against you. The creature told the story of how even the most moral of warriors fell to his attack. When he performed this attack on Goku it had no effect on him, Goku had a completely pure heart.
This inspired me to try harder to be an honest person, see the good in others, not have any ill-will towards anyone, and wish everyone well.
(I watched that episode quite a while ago, the details may not be %100 accurate but it's in the ballpark)

Man, I'm 28 and Dragon Ball has been such a huge part of my life. This video really hits home in so many views. Thx for putting the emotions of many people here into words. Me and my best friend were lucky enough to grow up with Dragon Ball (on German TV). During school breaks we were talking about the latest episodes (Budokai Tournaments, Goku's training, fighting styles/techniques) and followed Goku's many iconic adventures, one more crazy than another (Goku's Fist of Oozaru against Piccolo Sen. has branded itself into my mind) . When DBZ was announced we were both stupefied and then we saw the first trailers... Man, I still remember that feeling to this day: "Goku and Piccolo are fighting TOGETHER??? OMG OMG OMG What is going on?" DB was my childhood and DBZ guided me through my teen years. It was a roller coaster with so many amazing memories along the way. Today, there's criticism about DBS but for me it takes me back to my earlier years and I rejoice in these moments when I feel like a young me again. Super was made because Akira Toriyama saw the live action DragonBall movie and was SO appalled that he decided that he was going to make 🐉 ball super to spite Hollywood for ruining his masterpiece!✔️ (Akira had nothing to do with the live action shit show, but tried giving them some tips to make it better. They refused his help. Once the movie was finished, Akira saw it and reportedly said, "This is NOT Dragonball!!" If it took this movie to make Akira continue DBZ, then I am actually greatfull to that piece of shit movie! Lol😁) Spite can sometimes be a beautiful thing when used properly!! 👍
As popular and influential Dragon Ball is I can’t help but feel a good portion of its fan base view the series with rose-tinted glasses . It’s still a classic tho.
UnderRep
I mean many people recognise how dull some characters ( Goten) can be and how Toriyama had many inconsistencies in writing, they recognise its many flaws but still love it.
UnderRep True
Keep in mind that because of how mainstream it was, a majority of DBZ fans haven't seen much other anime either.
Detective X or the ones who say it’s the best show ever made, they get really annoying too
Detective X DBZ IS a show centered around power, so the powerscaling debates make sense for it, unlike say, Hunter x Hunter
R.I.P. Akira Toriyama. Your work will live on and be loved for many years to come.
Vegeta’s character had an impact on me too. I didn’t discover Dragon Ball Z until I was in high school, maybe around 16 or so. I had heard of it before but I wrote it off as “stupid or gay”. I remember the first episode I ever watched all the way through was in the filler arc for Garlic Junior but it was awesome and I was hooked. I played soccer in high school and had a bit of an adversarial relationship with the other goalie on the team. Quite simply he was better than me, not by a lot, but enough that I was a regular bench rider. It drove me mad because I knew I was good and had I gone to ANY other high school in the county I would have been starting easily. I had come from a program where I played EVERY game and was the only keeper, then all of a sudden not only was I not the only keeper but I was forced to play second fiddle. This dynamic reminded me A LOT of Vegetas feelings towards Goku and how it affected him and I often viewed myself as kinda the Vegeta of the Howard county high school soccer scene haha. Immensely talented and powerful but not quite enough and falling just short no matter my efforts.
I fell in love with DBZ back in 1998 when I went to a friends house, who had just purchased a couple of the uncut VHS tapes. The tapes were during the beginning of the Frieza Saga where Frieza had just turned into his second form, and the infamous episode where he toys with an empaled Krillen that is still stuck on one of his horns. The action, the animation, the violence and the characters all drew me in and I felt my interest from that moment on grew and grew until I was flat out obsessed with the how. Unfortunately for me, in the US only episodes leading up Racoom on the Ginyu Force getting defeated had been released on TV, and the home video releases had just started to released dubbed episodes of the Frieza Saga. To quench my love of all things DBZ I used to scour the internet at my local library for anything and everything related to Dragonball. I printed out the entire script of DBGT to read since it wasn't even close to being released in the US yet, I printed off enough color pictures of Dragonball characters to use up probably a dozen ink carts and cover nearly every squire inch of wall space in my bedroom, and I spent every cent of birthday and chore money buying the VHS tapes as soon as they came out. I was obsessed with this series to say the least and like many others this series launched my interest in anime which endures strongly to this day.
This was so well made and really explained how I felt watching DBZ in the 90s as a little girl in Puerto Rico. I definitely teared up MULTIPLE times watching this.
Also I absolutely recommend rewatching both Dragon Ball and DBZ ❤️ It hits harder now as an adult and made me love it even more.
The Vegeta portion of the video, the retelling of his story brought tears to my eyes. Well done man.
Rest in peace the goat 🐐
I’ve always said “If I ever were stuck on an deserted island, all I’d need is Dragon Ball Z, and I’d be happy”.
The beam duel between Goku and Vegeta all the way back in the Saiyan Saga has been my all-time favorite scene in anime ever since I first saw it on Toonami, especially the Ocean dub with Faulkner's score. That wasn't music he wrote, it was the sound of the apocalypse. Everything about that scene is a primal scream. Nothing has ever hit as hard since.
thank you for making my favorite video on this platform.
No offense for those who started watching the series since dbz ..But it feels a lot more special when you watch dragon ball first ..
XFNinjaDragon none taken, DB wasn't being aired when I started watching DBZ as a kid. Some of the things in DB are pretty perverted so I'm glad I watched it later on.
I think og DB needs a Kai vesion don't get me wrong its decent but the amount crappy filler and bad eng dub ruins it a bit for me
watching DB in japanese in my early 20's changed everything. ive watched lots of dbz episodes as a kid but never watched it all the way through. I kinda want to now. also the pervy stuff in dragon ball imo is part of what makes DB so perfect. oolong and master roshi being pichi pichi gal obsessed pervs made them more rounded characters
Agreed, I actually watched db first, well not all of it, my mother had bought the pilaf arc and the tien arc for me, I watched them over and over and over again XD
Lol... when Goku still had his tail. General Tao was the man
Even as a grown adult, Dragon Ball Z has the ability to make me cry. When Vegeta blows himself up to save Trunk... Gets me every time.
Oh man, you made me slowly tear up until I was fully crying & I’m a 26 years old!
Nice video, though you talk about "the West" when you really mean the US/UK. Other European and Latin American countries were enjoying Dragon Ball/DBZ way before you guys caught up. The idea of Pokemon "preparing" the western audience for DBZ sounds utterly bizarre to me, it was completely the other way around :P
This. By "The West" it only implied to North America and UK lol. Just the fact alone that they skipped the whole original DB to DBZ is just silly imo. How are people gonna feel connected to the whole cast?
That's some valid criticism you have there. It's something you see in a lot of anime fandom, this juxtaposition of Japan and this monolithic entity called 'The West' that doesn't really exist.
Nevertheless, this was an amazing video and I agree with a lot of it points, quite an emotional one to watch.
It's probably more accurate to say 'the English speaking world' but even then, our viewing experiences could still be vastly different! I often feel weirdly alienated when American fans talk about their childhood anime experiences, because in Australia and then Canada I had a totally different one.
Actually, the English speaking world is kind of unlucky in that we missed out on a lot of pre-90s classics because it took so long for us to get anime.
Yep, also the assumption about the dub and the soundtrack.
I'm from Mexico and there we had the original soundtrack on DBZ and anime was broadcasted on the public channels during the early 90s and maybe the 80s(but I don't have clear memories of the 80s), I just remember that we got these shows before DBZ:
Pizza Samurai Cats, Sailor Moon, Candy Candy, Kimba the White Lion, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Mazinger Z and after that big wave we got DBZ and it still was awesome.
Also, during that Dragon Ball was barely transsmited on the States, but people form US didn't like it.
About my personal viewing experiences, I saw many DBZ's movies before the show, I just got them on VHS, most of them were in Japanese with no subs, but they were still very fun to watch, not only for the fights but also from the environments, distinctive character designs and seeing the character interacting each other in very expressive ways.
He's simply referring to the rise of Toonami which popularized anime here in the states. The original Dragonball actually aired long before Toonami came around. It was in a morning time slot and I used to watch it everyday before school along with Sailor Moon. However it was never shown on Toonami so it went relatively unknown to the generation that was first exposed to anime through DBZ and the like. Even Robotech aired on TV here before then, just no one knew it as "anime".
I think up to Gohan, every Super Saiyan transformation was incredibly satisfying. Though personally, I think Goku's first time transforming is still one of the most powerful scenes in animation history, each time it represented something. Trunks represented a mountain of possibilities, showing that Super Saiyan wasn't exclusive to Goku, and that blew our minds. To Vegeta, it represented him finally closing an immense gap between him and Goku (plus, he wasn't exactly good by that point, and that meant another challenge to Goku). Gohan snapping showed this already incredible powerful transformation reaching an unbelievable evolution, and the first time in the series where a character could actually surpass an enemy that Goku couldn't defeat
Unfortunately, Goten and young Trunks transforming just made it seem worthless since they didn't go through the same struggles as the others (and don't even get me started on Caulifla), super saiyan 3 hype was real because it was a transformation so different from what we were used to, but it wore off pretty fast, and by the time it reached super saiyan 4, it just felt like an over used gimmick
Don't get me started on the 100 different transformations in super. SSJ and SSJ2 almost became irrelevant with the 100 different translations post ssj4 (DBS). I remember a mere ssj was considered rumors, legend or impossible. I stopped watching super at the "tingling in the back" part. That was it for me as somone who was 8 that grew up to DBZ and Dragon Ball. Ssjg and SsjBlue was garbage to me. Just hair color changes from dbz transformations (not exciting).
I have to suppress a groan at all these Blue forms, Orange Piccolo, Ultra Ego, Ultra Instinct etc. from Super. Like, okay... there's gonna be a stronger dude next month, why are we acting like this is important anymore? Hell Frieza got an n word pass now. But yeah as much as I still love Dragon Ball, I can't commit to following it as much as when I was still a naïve teen unaware of just how pants-on-head stupid some of DB can get. I don't blame Toriyama or any of the other authors/artists; Japanese work culture just values relentless productivity over quality at times, and it shows in the work where the more questionable decisions are so jarring.
came to watch this after hearing about the passing of the writer of dragon ball.
I am at work right now and I just heard about Mr. Toriyama. I'm takinga break at 8:50 to watch this. Rest In Peace Sir🫡
And thank you
Kid buu is the most unpredictable villain in the manga/anime, he literally killed dead people
Nico Caubalejo buu is so underrated people say frieza is the best villian I just say he's so generic buu was unpredictable and downright scary
People die when they are killed, even dead people.
Nico Caubalejo all the villians in Dragon ball z is the same. All of them want to destroy the world.
The problem was that he just wasn't a good final villain. He's just some random monster guy from space who happened to be the strongest bad guy ever.
His backstory was a bit one sided, but his character was enough to completely draw your attention away from that. He was a monster, riven with insanity. The most unpredictable villain in DBZ so far. I mean, seriously. He comes back from anything and no matter how monumental of a powerup a hero gets, that glimmer of hope is instantaneously swallowed up by Buu.
RIP Legend
Akira Toriyama
I’ve had this saved in my watch later for over a year now, and I finally watched it. The thoughts presented in this video largely mirror my own. When he spoke about god favorite character, I knew it would be Vegeta. Excellent video, thanks for the feels.
No Anime will be as important as DBZ, And that includes One Piece.
DBZ is the Doom of anime, it shaped the Shonen genre to what is today, just like how Doom shaped the FPS genre.
You mean the doom of manga right? Cause shonen comes from manga.
Thought you was talkin bout the 2000s rapper MF doom
Calm down. I can understand db is still influential and that you may have a nostalgic connection but the anime from which most shonens got inspiration was hokuto no ken
@@BurnedZerohokuto no ken is no where near as inspirational as dbz
@@BurnedZero Actually, there are much more anime that take inspiration from DBZ than Hokuto No Ken, it inspired anime like Naruto, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter X Hunter etc., JoJo was inspired Hokuto no Ken but that was just the punches from stands, the Ginyu Force literally inspired some of the JoJo poses
Im watching DBZ at the Moment for the dont know 15th Time or so :D I never counted it but since the 90s i watched the Series so many Times from Start to the End. I love it and have so many amazing Feelings and Memories from it!
And every Time i watch it i go back in Time and somehow enjoy it again and again and again :)
RIP Akira Toriyama, an absolute legend
This video honestly pulled on my heart strings. As someone who grew up as this show released in the U.S. this show truly is and always will be my absolute favorite
I think DBZ is the anime that's made the most impact internationally.
I remember when the show aired, caught the first episode after school, been hooked ever since.
I know this is old video but this was a good one. I felt the same
