Impressive test methods. I wonder, when you test for online speed, is this a Sprint vs. AT&T test of how fast each phone connects to the internet, the signal strength in your area? The 3Gs v. 3G comparison itself is kind of known.
Anyone notice when the calendar and twitter app open a bit faster on the 3GS, he uses the words "a lot faster" but when Pre's screen reorients a bit faster he uses the words "a little faster". So when a marathon runner finishes 2 seconds faster than another do you say "a lot faster"? When a 100m sprinter finishes 2 seconds faster than another do you say "a little faster"?
I do carry a spare battery for my digital camera and laptop. Smartphones nowadays with the big displays don't have the same battery live as earlier phones, therefore I think it is convenient if you are able to switch batteries. For example, if go on a trip to places with limited acces to electricity or when your batteries are running out at really inconveniet times. There were lots of times when I was really happy that I had a spare battery for my digital camera.
Got a Pre and it's beautiful. It's snappier now with the new update. I was thinking for going with the bigger sized HTC TP2 but I'll be sticking with the Pre.
On the iPhone 3G S, say you are doing some research on a web site and you receive an email. If you open the email application, is the browser application closed down or is it just put to sleep, so on returning to the browser, it will be as you left it? If it's the former and you have to start all over again in the browser, that really is a shortcoming.
At 6:36 ...they've got the same exact processor and even the same amount of RAM. Only difference is that WebOS is a 1.0 release and not as refined as iPhone OS 3.0 just yet. The 3GS's GPU may also be the reason for the bump.
hey jon if you're going to compare screen rotation on safari vs. the pre, you should at least scroll down on safari to get rid of the address bar. the iPhone rotation animation has more graphics with the address bar and bottom bar, whereas the pre doesn't, so getting rid of the address bar in safari and rotating it makes it a little quicker.
Are we watching the same video? How many times did use the words "very very close" in the tests? At least two. I even remember him saying the words "there seems to be no clear cut winner" eventhough iPhone edged out the Pre in all the tests. Emphasis on "edged".
So if you're browsing the internet in landscape mode on the Pre do you have to rotate the phone every time you want to type? Seems like that would get pretty annoying pretty quickly.
To be honest, when you did the screen rotation tests, I really don't care how fast they turn... As long as it turns in a quick fast amount of time, I really dont have any complaints.
If it is the case with most apps, such as safari, you can continue were you left off, then being able to keep multiple apps open on the pre is not a huge deal. I wonder whether this approach on the iPhone requires the developers to save/restore the state of their app, to allow the user to be able to continue?
I switched to an iPhone from a Pre last week, because I don't get Sprint coverage in my new house. I'm glad I did. Pre's notification system and multi-tasking to a degree is a little bit better. Everything else besides is way better on the iPhone 3Gs. That Vista reference really suits the Pre well.
The camera on the Pre has a flash and is much faster in taking pictures and storing photos. When you hold down the space bar on the keyboard, you can literally take a picture per second! The screen resolutions on both phones are exactly the same (480x360), but Pre's a lil smaller making the picture a little bit crisper. Both processors are 600 mhz, and they both have 256MB RAM. So when you say "it's not even close" you are clearly wrong! But when you add multitasking, it really isn't close!
The problem with app opening comparisons is that the iPhone app is always open once it's been opened. The pre actually closes the app. To close an iPhone app, you have to reboot or use a jailbreak.
I think it was because of different OS. The iphone 3gs has a samsumg s5pc100(ARM Cortex-A8) running on 600Mhz while the palm pre has Ti omap3430(ARM Cortex-A8) running on 600Mhz as well. It won't be too much difference about the pure cpu performance. That was the system gives iphone such a advantage. As you can tell these two are running at a relatively same speed when loading a webpage under a webkit-based browser. The 3GS and Palm Pre both have 256MB DDR1 RAM. However, the img sgx535 gpu inside iPhone 3GS is about twice the speed of img sgx530 gpu inside the Palm Pre. The gpu part of the 3GS is 15x faster than the img sgx MBX gpu inside the iphone 3G/2G.
@anas272829 yes when on a call you can still use all of your apps, well except for something like the ipod obviously. but this summer there will be an update to the iphone 3gs that will allow you to run any apps at the same time. so to answer your question directly, yes you can use your messaging while in a call
Palm Pre doesn't have any third party applications that's great in the iPhone. If, when Palm will ship its SDK late this summer, more applications like games or utilities will be available, running them in the same time in multi-task will slowing down the device a lot. Running a Mail application, Web browser and a Calendar in the same time is very easy, but, what will be running two games, one navigation application as TomTom and the rest in the same time?? Multi-task will show then its limits.
In comment to the Screen rotation on the internet, I think for the Palm Pre, having it rotate so quickly isn't a good thing, if you were to hold it down by your side for example, it looks over sensitive so you could get it rotating when you don't want it too If you do the same with the iPhone, I may not, I think the iPhone takes longer to ensure you don't go landscape by mistake... I think I am talking Bulcrap...
Ok vid, I just wish you would have explored functionality of some of the core functions in more detail. Speed difference if significant is going to impact my choice, but clearly here there were no clear winners. I looked at your vid cause I was keen to see you compare functionality like contacts lists, email, calendar. Will the calendar synch with outlook express? would be great to see a second installment of your review address some of these points.
did you ever think the 3G s looks the same as the 3G because we kept asking for it and all they had done was a new camera, voice control, prosesser, and compass and had no time for a new apperance or shell???
@Peredereyev the 3GS doesn't overheat... too much engadget for you lol.... it was already changed.... it was found out to be a third party case issue where the case was bleeding color onto white 3GS's .
typing on a touch screen definitely is harder to type on than a physical one at first, but after about around a day or two, you can type on it just as fast. It requires some time to get used to it
This video is outdated. The Pre has video recording. The keyboard is also very easy to get used to. The apps may be lacking, but think for a second, how many apps could you possibly need? At most a twitter client and a few games, which the Pre has. The phones are both very equally matched. But when you throw the HTC EVO into the argument, both of these are blown out of the water.
I wish you would have taken off that message notification on the Pre. It bugged me the entire time. Not to mention it makes the Pre's screen look smaller than it actually is.
Once u can use more than one app at the same time you'll be surprised at how often u do it. On the Pre I often have email, messaging, pandora and multiple web pages open at the same time. Then a call comes in and pauses the music streaming to my wireless stereo bluetooth headset and launches the phone app. It really changes the way you think about how a phone should behave. Feels more like a mini-netbook than a phone. 30+ homebrew apps exist now including turning pre into a wifi access point.
I've been looking at the Pre and 3GS and because I am currently a at&t customer I will be upgrading to the 3gs in January. Maby there will be a even better version of the iphone available by then who knows. I looked at the Pre and while I do think it's a cool phone I just can't see a reason to switch service to Sprint to get the Pre. At&t has better coverage than Sprint so that's my take on this whole Pre/3gs thing.
Could you tell something about the battery lives next time? I think it's quite important. Espescially for a phone like iPhone where you can't switch batteries.
lets not forget we can keep multiple apps open at the same time so actually if you had the apps open on the pre it would be faster because you dont have to close whatever you were doing before.
The Pre's phone doesn't have video YET. Its a software update that will add it...unlike Apple which makes you buy a brand new phone to get it. Now some will say "but the 3G was out a year already" and I'll say "so there wasn't video capture a year ago?"
iPhone has an app store with 50.000 applications so 50.000 more reasons to get an iphone. it also has the Nike+ support which is great for workout and it also has a great unmatched ipod app
While you can use a GSM phone in more countries, AT&Ts international wireless rates are so high that almost nobody dares to do so, and you cannot switch networks on a stock US iPhone. Palm has indicated that they will offer an unlocked GSM Pre or WebOS device, while Apple has made it clear they won't offer an unlocked US iPhone. I'm somewhat skeptical of the 7.2Mbps vs 5Mbps claims as an indicator of practical speed given that you never see lab data transfer rates in the real world.
Was this a study you did? Because that makes no sense. I was playing with all different kinds of phones at the At&t store. And sucked hard with touch screen keyboards. I could pull off the physical keyboard, basically without issue. The touch screen kept pressing the wrong letters when I was typing.
i am a palm user.. and there is little mentioning about thousands of palm softwares that is available since 1990's.. most are freewares.. anyway, if you want to impress your friends.. iPhone is a great phone for it.. Palm softwares helps me to manage my patients since 2004 till now..
Lets just remember that this video was posted 6 months ago! The Pre was only out "2 weeks" according to the author and in its first OS revision. Multiple OS updates later, we've got a better, faster Pre. Just my 2 cents.
The only thing I don't like about Jon is that when the 3G S is faster, he says "noticably faster" and when the Pre is faster by the same time, he says "a little bit faster", for example the screen rotation and the Engadget page loading.
This reviewer notices the most insignificant iPhone advantage in webpage loading times, but somehow fails to notice that the Pre took a third the time to load the UA-cam video, or that the framerate was much more fluid. The entire review has disparities like this.
the 3gs is THREE YEARS of development, and the palm pre competes pretty well even in this bias test based on barely a MONTH of development. also, there is a homebrew virtual keyboard out for a while now, and video recording will come out in webOS 1.4.
The IPhone 3G S has a much larger screen and may take a fraction or two longer to fill the screen, you should have mentioned this to be fair to the iPhone.
notice how the iphone even changes its time faster... e.g. iphone turned 11:41AM about 30 seconds before the Pre... not saying it has to do with the phones, just pointing it out
Actual question for Jon......If you are using full power of each phone....E.G...Push real time, 3G only, multi-task using (pre), full brightness etc.....What are battery hour usages out of full charge.............I have tried both for 1 full day and had Pre with it's fully advertised features and got about 2.75 hours use.......3GS I had about 5.5 hours.......No talk, just data use.
That's a given because of the networks the use. Evdo Rev. 0 is currently the fastest 3G technology applied widely. It is used by Sprint and Verizon. The iPhone is still an awesome phone. It's got a great style factor and the huge app store is what makes it. But I don't like ATT spotty 3G coverage. It's pretty small. Sprint and Verizon's 3G coverage is about the same and much wider, any decently-sized city or highway will be covered.
If these two features are your main issues, then think about this...Video recording can come at a later update for Palm Pre. Multitasking will never be a feature of the IPhone 3GS. Maybe Apple will have another Iphone with multitasking in the future.
Multi-tasking is not that big of deal and you can do it on the iPhone, you can have music playing while sending an email while browsing the internet or maps or whatever, and push notifications is great so its not really that big of a deal to have multi-tasking. Why would you want to sacrifice battery life and performance for just having 4 different applications open on the pre which you could instead just close and go back to.
I like when you go to compare the youtube video quality you change the subject and talk about the volume of the speaker?? Way to stay on track... And if you are curious, the Pre video quality blows away the Iphone video playback. No contest... but I like how you glossed over that detail and major review feature. there is a limited autocorrect and auto-fill on the Pre. Both processors are the same speed (600Mhz) though different dies - TI for Palm, Samsung for iPhone.
On my Pre I just leave my 5 most common apps running in cards so I don't have to load them fresh every time I need them. That's how I do it on my home computer too; I don't open and close firefox, outlook, songbird, every time I need them, I just leave them running. The Pre lets me work and interact with my phone the same as I do with my computer, and that's a huge win. It's clear that a lot of people are just not used to working with a phone capable of true multitasking.
Im getting an iPhone3Gs and im wondering if im connected to my home wireless internet, and am using the internet or whatever, will that go on my data plan?
multi-tasking is really the only thing the pre has on the iphone. as far as keyboard you could say that the pre's keyboard evens out with the fact that the buttons are small and you do have to slide it open. and when you do slide open the pre it doesn't look as cool. the pre isn't as sleek looking in the first place
I was planning on purchasing an iPhone but then I found out about the Pre and I must say they are not all that different. The deal maker for me is the difference in the Monthly service charge. The Pre is 69.99 for unlimited data, and text messaging while you would have to pay 89.99 for the same deal with the iPhone.
LOL I liked the shock in his voice when the Palm Pre's rotation was faster than the 3GS... sounds a lot like the buyer's remorse my cousin had when he held his 3GS next to my Pre! LOL It also comes down to carrier, people... AT&T is woefully inadequate to support the 3GS's capabilities... can't even support MMS yet!!! Sprint is also TONS cheaper per month with their Everything Data plans. (P.S. All Sprint plans for the Pre include GPS navigation! AT&T doesn't.)
The screen rotation test was all wrong, the iPhone screen rotation is delayed on purpose because sometime people accidentally turn they're iPhone sideways for a second and back again, the delay is a feature, trust me I have an iPhone 4 and it's a lot faster then the 3Gs but screen rotation is the same speed. It's a feature.
if your looking for a cheaper bill every month, go with the palm pre...instead of paying $90+ dollars for the iphones monthly bill. Also, i do have a pre and they have made some great changes to it, like video recording, and faster app loading
i dont know, to me it appeared that the palm pre was slightly faster then the iphone yet he keeps saying they loaded the same time, is it just me or was this review slightly biased
LOL, I would have waited, Bell is launching the Palm Pre soon, it has the tweaks and now the SDK will be released so more apps can be developed by anyone interested, Overall I would have to say that WebOS does not look very popular now, but it has a lot of potential when it matures
I´m from sweden and i ordered a 3Gs tuesday and the webpage said that it´ll come 2010/01/11!!! I was really suprised... I knew it was out in the webshop but wow!! I´m so excited now, I cant wait... But it´s a long time so...
jon4lakers good review but you seem more bias towards the iphone, why didn't you mention the pre's camera has flash when the iphone 3gs doesn't you did point out a negative for pre stating it couldn't record video but not point out a negative for iphone 3gs saying it lacks flash. Video editing can be added by firmware updated but flash can't be added by a firmware update.
I gave the Pre a fair shot for a couple of months. Pre's notification system totally beats iPhone's hands down, but that's it. Pre's multi-tasking while nice tends to slow down the phone and drain the battery faster. The 3Gs is faster and the battery lasts longer. I rather my phone last longer per charge and be very solid doing on thing at a time than shakey doing a bunch.
Many people are saying that the iPhone is faster when they are pretty much the same, if the Pre takes a little longer is cuz it has to create a "card" first, this way it can multitask in case you decide to open another "card" for a different website. And for Apple to come out with a slightly faster iPhone and able to record video and putting a hefty price tag...to whoever owns the iPhone 3G just stick with it,if your w/ sprint get the Pre cuz it packs a punch for such small device w/ GPS & gmaps.
With the Palm Pre, you can't do landscape typing. Not a huge deal, especially since the screen rotates so quickly. I personally love the 3G's on screen keyboard. And now with 3.0, landscape keys make it much more friendly, especially with the auto correct. - Good Review/Comparison.
Great test, the more I see the Pre the more I'm liking it haha. It's hard to beat the 3G S though.
@Mitchell He was probably like 12 when he posted that comment
Great job previewing each phone without bias. I learned a lot about both phone and what sets them apart.
lol me too!! remember the pilot? lol i love palm...the treo 600 changed the game!
when 240p was "strong" quality
Yes, all of those features will work. What network/carrier are you planning to use the iPhone on?
Impressive test methods. I wonder, when you test for online speed, is this a Sprint vs. AT&T test of how fast each phone connects to the internet, the signal strength in your area?

I think it was because of different OS. The iphone 3gs has a samsumg s5pc100(ARM Cortex-A8) running on 600Mhz while the palm pre has Ti omap3430(ARM Cortex-A8) running on 600Mhz as well. How do you get the notifications to show up on the calender? I have the 3G S as well.
The pre dosent have auto correct yet. this was brought up and palm have said they will include it in the new firmware update in november.
Thanks for the help.
But if i buy one from ebay with no contract will i be able to use all the media functions, camera etc?
when do you thinks the iphone 3G S will come out in other countries
Could you tell something about the battery lives next time? I think it's quite important. Espescially for a phone like iPhone where you can't switch batteries.
Do you get WiFi everywhere you go? Some of us leave our homes from time to time.
How does the new Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating compare with the old one? Is it possible to feel a difference?
wait why do people say theres no to do list on the iphone 3G S's calender, you just add what you want to do on some day...
lets not forget we can keep multiple apps open at the same time so actually if you had the apps open on the pre it would be faster because you dont have to close whatever you were doing before.
so the speaker in the 3GS is better than in the 3G? how much better would you say?
The rotation speed on the iPhone is purposly slower just incase you flipped it by mistake, so it doesn't change when you don't want it to.

Definately....
and keeping those apps open increases the speed of opening all these apps as well. i.e. the Twitter example.
Firstly, it's not "iPod touch functionality" It's music player application, and they call it iPod, and Palm Pre has it's own music player app.
If these two features are your main issues, then think about this...Video recording can come at a later update for Palm Pre. Multitasking will never be a feature of the IPhone 3GS. Maybe Apple will have another Iphone with multitasking in the future.
Hello there.
Both processors are the same speed (600Mhz) though different dies - TI for Palm, Samsung for iPhone.
do you ever stop to think that maybe some people aren't on att? What if there on movistar? or Claro?
On my Pre I just leave my 5 most common apps running in cards so I don't have to load them fresh every time I need them. That's how I do it on my home computer too; I don't open and close firefox, outlook, songbird, every time I need them, I just leave them running.
The Pre lets me work and interact with my phone the same as I do with my computer, and that's a huge win. It's clear that a lot of people are just not used to working with a phone capable of true multitasking.
Im getting an iPhone3Gs and im wondering if im connected to my home wireless internet, and am using the internet or whatever, will that go on my data plan?
multi-tasking is really the only thing the pre has on the iphone. as far as keyboard you could say that the pre's keyboard evens out with the fact that the buttons are small and you do have to slide it open. and when you do slide open the pre it doesn't look as cool. the pre isn't as sleek looking in the first place
not to mention that the iphone has had massive price cuts as well... what was the price of the original iphone again?? hmm?
I was planning on purchasing an iPhone but then I found out about the Pre and I must say they are not all that different. The deal maker for me is the difference in the Monthly service charge. The Pre is 69.99 for unlimited data, and text messaging while you would have to pay 89.99 for the same deal with the iPhone.
LOL I liked the shock in his voice when the Palm Pre's rotation was faster than the 3GS... sounds a lot like the buyer's remorse my cousin had when he held his 3GS next to my Pre! LOL
It also comes down to carrier, people...
Also, i do have a pre and they have made some great changes to it, like video recording, and faster app loading
he uses Exchange for this. the notifications are invitations to meetings etc.
No video for the Pre? thats messed up
i dont know, to me it appeared that the palm pre was slightly faster then the iphone yet he keeps saying they loaded the same time, is it just me or was this review slightly biased
Video editing can be added by firmware updated but flash can't be added by a firmware update.
you can't add autofocus. It's built in hardware. But your point makes total sense.
I NEED HELP!
CAN I USE A PRE WITH NO SIM CARD???
I want one but i dont need the phone function as i already have an iPhone 3GS.
If a speed test is going to be performed on these 2 phones doesn't it make more sense to do it on WiFi and not 3G?
how did you make the video longer than 10:00 minutes
Same thing I was thinking. But the multi-tasking handling on the Pre looks cool. Can't wait to see what Apple will come up with :D
Does the Palm Pre work on GSM networks yet?
With the Palm Pre, you can't do landscape typing. Not a huge deal, especially since the screen rotates so quickly.
I personally love the 3G's on screen keyboard. And now with 3.0, landscape keys make it much more friendly, especially with the auto correct. - Good Review/Comparison.
the google maps app on the pre is also a web app and it works just as fast if not faster than the iphones
pre is just barely slower because for that i have heard pre has flash so thats why its slower, so actually pre is faster on web browsing.
