Obviously you should choose 3gs, it's faster, cheaper, it has the compass (which also integrates into maps), etc. (Btw, the compass isn't really useful, but the ability for your iPhone to tell which way you're facing will open up a lot of possibilities for apps)
The battery on my 3GS kicks ass. I can go a whole day using it non-stop and at the end of the day my battery is still at around 80%. Also I downloaded Talladega Nights from the iTunes app and after downloading the1.2GB movie my battery was only down 6% from where it was at. Pretty damn impressive.
My iPhone 15 Pro Max can also go a whole day without needing to be charged ! I don’t download movies anymore though ; I use Netflix to stream them, it’s better than having to occupy storage on my 512GB 😅
I've got an iphone 3g and mine doesnt take much time to load STOCKS on wifi, it actually took the same time as your 3gs took. Screen rotation on my 3g took the same time as your 3gs took. The things which make a 3gs better then a 3g are the new features including built in camcorder, focus feature in the camera, compass, voice control etc
This is exactly what I was looking for to decide whether or not I would upgrade my iPhone 3G to 3GS. I think, it's a no brainer. Upgrade the iPhone is a go! Thank for the comprehensive review. You nailed it! Cheers, Diego
This video isn't to show whether or not the 3G S is faster. It's to show people how much faster it is so they can determine whether its worth it to upgrade.
Yes I am playing games, texing, on the internet, listening to music for a good portion of the day and my battery remains pretty high. Although when I am in class I generally don't use it too much. Right now it is 9:30 at night and I am still at 65% battery and I have been using it since 6 this morning. Just charge it up every night and keep your brightness relatively low. And yes, you can MMS.
I'm sure someone may have pointed this out, but not reading thru 913 comments to find out...but as far as the web browsing speed and load times, even on the same website, its usually the ads on the side/top that cause lag in load time, if you notice in both of his site tests, the desired content appeared to be loaded on both phones pretty much at the same time,, but the ads tend to hurt the actual finishing speed
0.5s quicker on that test maybe. But Ive seen a graphics benchmark where the 3G got 6.8fps and the 3GS was 24.3fps So thats 4x the speed. For apps/games, thats quite something.
that is a minor issue, the most important is the notice in load times with games an graphics, video recorder, louder speakers, and the compass which i personally don't care about unless i live in the bush of course.
There was something that I've noticed. The iTouch had the chrome backing while the iPhone had the two colors to choose from, white or black. Chrome would've been a nice touch to any of the new iPhones.
cache is a part of the processer where data can be stored to be accessed the fastest. although, most processers only come with about 2mb of cache. cookies are ads displayed on webpages. whenever there is an ad, your computer gets a cookie.
Thnx for uploading this video. I was looking for the differents between de 3G and 3GS and I found this one. I'm now getting an Iphone 3GS and I guess I won't regret :)
well it only has limited multitasking. You can listen to music while doing other things and stuff like that, but if you're using Safari and then you get a text message, you can't switch over to that app. It just notifies you and you have to close Safari to get to your messages.
you'd already visited engadget on the 3gs, a fairer test would've been to clear all browsing history first, although the result would've still been the same.
It depends on what your relation with AT&T is. If you are a brand new customer to AT&T, it will cost you $199. If you are a current AT&T customer, and upgrade elegible (meaning you fufilled your previous contract with AT&T), it is again, $199 If your are a current At&T Customer, but you are not upgrade elegible, it can e anywhere between $299 to i think $399 depending on how far your are in your existing contract with AT&T
@innmate1414 actually the beta was realesed and the jailbroken version can run the OFFICAL version of the multitasking app apple are just trying to phase out the 3g
The screen on the 3gs is identical to the screen on the 3g..the only difference made to the screen of the 3gs is a different surface coating to make it more resistant to smudges and fingerprints
LOL, true, true, the 4th Generation network is undergoing some testing in Japan and we have the HTC PRO in 4G in canada, Although I do not think that the Bell Canada server has fully updated its server to handle the full capability of the 4G phones
You can download an app called iVideo Camera which lets you record videos and post them on youtube, facebook, flickr, etc... But the FPS is only 10 instead of 30 like the 3GS.
That's true. I wanted the 3g when it came out but I never got it, and then I decided to actually go out and buy the 3gs and it's a great phone! But to actually switch from a 3g to a 3gs isn't really worth it that much
If your are an existing AT&T customer, and you do not know if you are upgrade elegiblem, you can either go to an AT&T store and find out or call *NEW# from the at&t phone you want to upgrade
here's the thing, is the slow iphone 3G, brand new as well? or has the memory been previously occupied, with music/movies/etc? excessive use from the past may very well be the reason for the speed difference, as well as any memory still in use. although it appears that both phones are unused by home screen.
I would have to agree.for a casual iphone user and with all of the updates coming out and the ability to use the MMS feature by early August there is no sense to get the 3GS other then the Video camera and believe me sooner or later you'll see an app in the app store for a video recorder for iphone 3g also you can just jailbreak your phone and use the cydia cycorder...Not enough to switch out wait to next summer
@iLengzai sure the 3g can make videorecordings...you just need to install Cydia on it and it's plenty of apps to do that (one of the best is iPhone Video recorder)
@gamorza2002 Spend a year using one of these things. Believe me, that one second here, half a second there, sometimes two seconds here can REALLY add up, and affect the overall experience. The 3G just starts to seem sluggish after using faster devices for a while.
Although both of these devices are dated. If I had to decide I would go with the 3GS over the 3G. Better camera with auto focus plus video record, Nicer screen, Faster processor and it supports much more apps. You cannot download much with the 3G because most apps require at least iOS 5 and higher. Oh and the 3G is plagued with problems including terrible battery life.
i think it doesnt affect the speed and performance becuz ur using the hard drive to store everything and the hard drive doesnt really effect the speed the 3gs has 250mb ram (i think) and thats what makes it run so smooth and fast
the increase in load times? notice the compass kinda sucked at one point it said north was up while most of the time it sais north is down video recording isnt new to the 3g-s apple use that as a way to force people to upgrade, as simpler phones could do video and if you jailbroke it it could do vid
your test for everything except the browser and the notes as each aplication you were using was opening something diffrent (e.g. calender opened month view on 3gs and day view on 3g
ram is 256 MB processing power? frequency is 600 MHz, new screen is pretty cool compas is usefull in car, when you have to know which turn to take in just few seconds, you dont have time to think which way are you heading...but when you dont have a car, maybe there will be some apps using compass wisely...
I have the 3Gs and its very good, it's frames per second is much faster than 3G. 3GS is the only phone that went from iOS 3 to iOS 6. My iPhone 3GS is running on iOS 6.0.1
@ericngo77 The 3gs has the iphone writing on the back in CHROME the same as the APPLE LOGO the 3g only has the apple logo in chrome PLUS the 3gs has video option in the camera menu just like this video shows u... u have a switch in the lover right corner in the camera menu if its a 3gs .... 3g doesnt have video option
If only it had more multi tasking capabilities then it would probably be a necessary upgrade. I hate getting notifications on my iphone 3g and having to exit the application momentarily to see what it was. Hopefully they will have this feature on the next gen iphone and i'll get it for sure :D
if you have 3G, is it worth it to go buy this phone now and buy out of a contract or keep 3G and wait for the next iphone for when the contract expires?
@GODLOVEEESYOU the iphone 3GS is only available in 16GB or 32GB cuts, but I suggest you to buy the 3G instead...you save LOT of money up and the speed differences, honestly, are minimum...
it's seems like there are not much different though. as far as i know, 3gs only got new application such compass, etc. and the 3g connection is slightly faster than iphone 3g. correct me if i'm wrong, u can get those application which pre-install in 3gs to 3g, right???
the iphone 3g and the 3gs is a 2 to 3 secs apart in openning up apps and web surfing, i dont i dont think it worth getting in like all day for it if you already got a 3g phone already
im pretty sure that we all have mms on the phone right now but we cant see or use it till atat catchs up to apple. where did u heatr that thing about august tho
I just got a 3g and its fine. I believe the 3g is a better because the 3gs has no really nothing over the 3g...its seems like everything the 3gs have can be added to the 3g with a update. The only thing the 3gs has over the 3g is as it seems a better camera.
its, what, 5 years old at this point? And this video is 4. So its going to suck now but at the time it was THE phone to get. Now you have HTC One, S4, iPhone 5 and such, but the 3g was only the second iPhone and was still very new technology in the smart phone market.
Back when slow was considered fast
Riiight. I'd fucking kill myself nowadays.
standards were different back then
Lol. Now it’s even faster here in 2023 😂
:)
I bought 3GS cause of this video in 2009.. Now, I'm still using my phone.. Thanks TechnoBuffalo :)
are you still using it?
imagine though
iPhone 3G was dead from the beginning... It lagged on iOS 3 already
Obviously you should choose 3gs, it's faster, cheaper, it has the compass (which also integrates into maps), etc.
(Btw, the compass isn't really useful, but the ability for your iPhone to tell which way you're facing will open up a lot of possibilities for apps)
The speed reminds me of all the times waiting to respring cydia

Dang you guys have been around for a while also the 3GS was so much faster :D
I've got an iphone 3g and mine doesnt take much time to load STOCKS on wifi, it actually took the same time as your 3gs took. Screen rotation on my 3g took the same time as your 3gs took. Go for it!
This video isn't to show whether or not the 3G S is faster. It's to show people how much faster it is so they can determine whether its worth it to upgrade.
Didn't realize y'all were around that long!! This is fucking retro
Yes I am playing games, texing, on the internet, listening to music for a good portion of the day and my battery remains pretty high. Although when I am in class I generally don't use it too much. Watching this in 2015. Iphone 6s with iOS 9
+Filip Zirbo 6s isn't even out yet dumbo
AnuksVids you did not get the irony though... people these days are kinda stupid. When I wrote the comment, ios 9 preview was not available either.
Hahaha filip is a fucking dumbass
😂😂😂
lol, watching this in 2017. iphone 7 with iOS 10.
I have a 3G but I know you'll love the 3gs. I tried it out at the AT&T store! Good Luck!
7 years ago??? I feel sick

Excelent review, though i dont see much difference between the 3G and 3Gs apart from the few seconds quicker loading and its 3megapixel camera.
Wahcthing this with iPhone x just came out and iOS 11.3
Now watching this on my iPhone 12 Pro 😂
This guy's exact location would be 33 39'6"N 117 46'3"W
Put that in Google Maps.
Thanks for sharing your coordinates with us.
2:30 did he say google maps?
The Maps app used to be Google Maps before iOS 6.

I still use mine

Watching this on my iPhone 3GS 32GB Black using a Mercury Fancy Diary Case(Black-Black) Makes a perfect phone for me :)
There was something that I've noticed. The iTouch had the chrome backing while the iPhone had the two colors to choose from, white or black. Chrome would've been a nice touch to any of the new iPhones.
The chrome gets really scratched tho
I have got 3g and it is very good
+Assasin's Creed history dude the 3g suck why do you have that thing, you cant get any app unless your runnin whited00r
+Assasin's Creed history i have 4s and its better than 3g
Guys now i have 4s soo...
i have a 5
wich is just awesome. when it came out i beated the samsung s3 and even the s4
I got the iPhone 6s

Of course its better, its more a question of whether the extra cost is worth the minor amount of feature upgrades
i hope you get paid for these, from youtube
because you always have kick ass reviews and take a lot of time doing these
props

Well I am from Singapore and they have not released the release date of the 3G S but I am sure I'll get it ASAP, It's Awesome
I was 11 years old when this video was made
Have both iPhones been completely resetted? Or is the 3GS completely new and the 3G maybe slower because of already having been used?
They'll have dual core and quad core processors for iphone and other smart phones out early and late next year. I'd wait until then.
at 7:00 i think it was adverts on the 3G S were longer so it took more time to load them
That's true. I wanted the 3g when it came out but I never got it, and then I decided to actually go out and buy the 3gs and it's a great phone! But to actually switch from a 3g to a 3gs isn't really worth it that much
Damn. I wonder what iPhone you rock now
@imzachhh the 3gs was lo on battery at the start if you look he might have not charged them fully before
Ok so hold up, You're using both of them at the same time, so you have 2 AT&T contracts?
If your are an existing AT&T customer, and you do not know if you are upgrade elegiblem, you can either go to an AT&T store and find out or call *NEW# from the at&t phone you want to upgrade

was gonna say that too, Hey Jon try clear the cache, cookies, and history and redo this test
@gamorza2002

Does the calendar have different features on the 3g s... What's with the red number on you calendar icon?
Well what would you think which would be better to use, the faster or the slower... if that's what you ment.
Excellent video Jon!
Wow this is nice. I can't wait to get mine next week. Oh if AT&T had announced the upgrade policy a day earlier. Oh well. Still getting one.
Although both of these devices are dated. If I had to decide I would go with the 3GS over the 3G. Dude's got really nice hands.
Yo what you usin man?
@MathieuCore2 not a lot. only RAM difference. iPhone 3G = iPodTouch 2nd gen
I've read that the next generation of iphones will have a larger screen roughly 4 inches and thinner and boosting the camera to 5 MP
@LiveLoveSugar the 3gs which is significantly faster is newer than the 3g
ram is 256 MB
processing power? frequency is 600 MHz,
new screen is pretty cool
compas is usefull in car, when you have to know which turn to take in just few seconds, you dont have time to think which way are you heading...but when you dont have a car, maybe there will be some apps using compass wisely...
@gamorza2002 how is it half a second? did you even see the browser comparison, it was more than 5 seconds.
He's a tech-reviewer... Companies and providers send him products to keep for a few weeks to test out, review, and post the reviews on UA-cam.
I think you're right. I dont have an iPhone but my 3G iPod has no lag so I don't understand why there is a delay in the video
video camera, 32gb's, voice controls, compass, increased battery?
when exactly do u think it will be released in our economy...???i have the 3G for a few months now....but i cant wait for 4g
I have the 3Gs and its very good, it's frames per second is much faster than 3G. 3GS is the only phone that went from iOS 3 to iOS 6. My iPhone 3GS is running on iOS 6.0.1
It probably is coming out on June 2010 because all the other iphones have come out on June.
Good old days ✨
It said 2009 on the calendar and I thought it was behind and I remembered that this video is 8 years old
If only it had more multi tasking capabilities then it would probably be a necessary upgrade. I hate getting notifications on my iphone 3g and having to exit the application momentarily to see what it was. Hopefully they will have this feature on the next gen iphone and i'll get it for sure :D
Hi! Do you still have your other youtube account for other non-tech talks? Could you please send me the link?
Thanks!
I'm going from the 2g to 3gs so hopfully the difference will be even more noticable. Can u finally text media yet with it?
it can sync with clients like Exchange, something must have updated on another app its synced with
can you turn off that the phone auto adjust the landscape mode in camera so you can choose? or is it not possible? Plz answer, thanks
2dm- what do you say when you greet more than one person then and don't know their names?
wait so how much do i gotta pay up front before i get the rebates.
HSDPA can't be supported on both. Cause HSDPA is Turbo 3GB which is 3GS (7.2mbit/s)
if you have 3G, is it worth it to go buy this phone now and buy out of a contract or keep 3G and wait for the next iphone for when the contract expires?
wow that was infact a very noticable difference between the 3G, and the 3GS. very noticable.
@GODLOVEEESYOU
the iphone 3GS is only available in 16GB or 32GB cuts, but I suggest you to buy the 3G instead...you save LOT of money up and the speed differences, honestly, are minimum...
yes, and you can also get a video recorder when you jailbreak on the 3g so thats why its much more worth it than the 3gs :)
it's seems like there are not much different though. as far as i know, 3gs only got new application such compass, etc. and the 3g connection is slightly faster than iphone 3g. correct me if i'm wrong, u can get those application which pre-install in 3gs to 3g, right???
hey, i want to asking something, The rumor of iphone 4g will come in between April and May, is that right ?
Do you now if it does stop working will your contract cover it ? im pretty set on getting an iphone now
In your speed comparisons, each phone isn't loading into the same screen of each program, which might not be fair.
the iphone 3g and the 3gs is a 2 to 3 secs apart in openning up apps and web surfing, i dont i dont think it worth getting in like all day for it if you already got a 3g phone already
@Braddulz440 you would be surprised at how a 3 second speed boost excites people
im pretty sure that we all have mms on the phone right now but we cant see or use it till atat catchs up to apple. where did u heatr that thing about august tho
I just got a 3g and its fine.
I believe the 3g is a better because the 3gs has no really nothing over the 3g...its seems like everything the 3gs have can be added to the 3g with a update. The only thing the 3gs has over the 3g is as it seems a better camera.
