Thanks for being real about gardening. I live in Oregon, and I've had plants scorch that have been happy years past. Someone said the sun is closer to earth and hotter. Can't control mother nature..❤ readjusting and rethinking and rearranging needed..so much work😗😏😌your gardens are wonderful and yes weeds appear overnight 🙄

Thank you so much for showing us your weeds! It makes me feel SO MUCH BETTER that it is not just me. Because of you, I have delved deeply into hydrangeas - I had only had experience with hydrangeas that bloomed once in a while with one or two blooms. Now I have a whole garden full of the most gorgeous blooms I've ever seen! I need MORE! They really are addictive. I must have a Haas Halo, but they are not common and I am having a hard time finding one.... anyway, thank you so much!

I have been doing a similar “timed” gardening except mine is shade related too. Age has eliminated my ability to garden in the sun when the heat and humidity are at this past week’s levels. Sometimes I also have to take a day or two off between days outside. 🥵

Agree about how aging has affected my tolerance of heat! I also space my garden time out in days when it's this hot.

Oh I hear you! It’s hot, humid and so many mosquitoes makes it miserable to be outside. And the weeds have multiplied like crazy! I so enjoy your videos and the beautiful garden you have. Hydrangeas are so easy to care for and provide such joy. Your garden transformation has been wonderful to watch. 💚💚💚

Oh my! Yes! Terrible heat and humidity here in Maryland too. Plus barely any rain is making for a rough gardening season. On the bright side, I finally found a Haas Halo Hydrangea! I’m keeping it well watered in the shade in its nursery pot until this weather breaks, then I’ll get it in the ground. Thank you for sharing real life in your neck of the woods!! It’s still beautiful!!

Little quick fire has become one of my favorites. The open structure of the panicles is so delicate and fetching. Maintenance is now the lense I use when choosing plan,to. Realistically, I can’t/won’t keep up with the weeds and or upkeep for perennials.I’m moving strongly toward trees and shrubs.color, texture, height, with lots of repetition.

I found this video to be very encouraging! I'm in southern Nebraska, and we've had some high temps too and are still dealing with the Japanese beetles and after effects of a 2-year drought. Your garden always looks like a green oasis to me, and I absolutely love your gardening style. I'm sorry for the struggles you've had with heat and storms, but it makes me feel better about my own browning hydrangeas and hostas! Thanks for keeping it real.

Hello from London UK dear Danielle 😃 Since we are still struggling to reach 66o Fahrenheit of heat in the UK at the warmest part of the day it is quite difficult to imagine the crazy prolonged heatwave you guys have been experiencing in the US but I guess that both humans, animals & Nature has been immense stress & discomfort. We could see in your last video that a big storm was coming and it did with a vengeance. Feeling overwhelmed after such an ordeal is natural as this heatwave affected your well being but knowing that a garden in which you put so much thought, love & effort is under such a prolonged stress is a feeling that most of us experience too. Extremes are devastating in many ways and what your beautiful garden, yourself & Grace need now is to return to more breathable temperatures. What always amazes me is the sheer resilience of Nature in such cases that show us that Life goes on no matter what. I love your extensive knowledge of plants and what to do when cleaning up after a serious heatwave and sharing with us the reality of your garden. Most of your hydrangeas are still looking great and so are your cherry tomatoes & basil. I am loving your bird wreaths made from sunflowers hearts. I can absolutely relate to thinking twice about creating a high maintenance that often seems a lovely idea at the start when one has more time to look after it and then the reality hits us one day that it is too much to deal with. Planting hydrangeas is an excellent idea and I have one Annabelle hydrangea in my South of France home that has been enchanting us for the past 23 years without fail. I would love to know what differentiate a Hamish nursery from a English one please ? Well done for these inspiring 90 minutes mid-Summer cleaning around the garden with Grace who even greeted us when you worked on your raised beds by the library. Stay hydrated, cool & well dear Danielle 😊💚

Hi Danielle. We are all in the same boat. I live 50 miles west of Boston and we got as high as 95 and very humid. I can’t believe you’ve endured 100. Watching you has reminded me of the maintenance I need to tackle as well. Between not feeling well for 6 weeks and then the heat wave…. Well I’ve got weeds knee high and I’m ready to rip out my raised flower beds as well heartbreaking but you’ve inspired me to accept what we cannot change. There is always next year. I just got 4 invincible spirit II hydrangeas delivered today from PW. I’m hoping we’ll cool down a bit. Thank you for sharing friend. Always so inspirational ❤

I can empathize, I'm still cleaning up after Hurricane Beryl. The eye of the storm went over our house. Two large limbs fell, creating havoc and lots of new sunlight where it's not needed. I'm trying to find a way to protect my Japanese Maples and the hydranges. Thinking of purchasing a tool to stake plants to try to restore a few Floret Zinnias. Good luck!

Speaking of being overwhelmed; on April 29th I overworked in the garden and I actually fractured two vertebrae in my back. The pain was excruciating but even worse was watching my flower field and landscaping go to weeds. I had a procedure to correct the vertebrae but yesterday was the first day I was able to work in the garden at all. I spent an hour weeding which was like trying to fill a swimming pool with a cup. I’ve never been depressed in my life but this is really a little more than I can handle. My exhusband actually came over last week and picked me a full bucket of flowers just so I could arrange them and feel a little better about myself. My doctor has explained how this vertebrae fracturing could easily happen again so my dreams of being a flower farmer have been crushed. My plan going forward is to just plant the landscape and enjoy flowers for me.
Sorry for the rant but none of my friends actually appreciate how devastating this is to me. Enjoy your garden and enjoy your youth. God bless you. Thanks for listening.

really enjoyed this episode and little quick fire is a great hydrangea. I liked your comments on future renovation of the driveway garden. thats the reality of gardening-updating when something is no longer working well. also you are brave enough to show that sometimes weeds get out of control and I think sometimes there is no better feeling than going out and cleaning up that bed-that's the beauty of gardening I think. get a bed shipshape and instant reward-it always looks so much better. I also (I think a few episodes back?) you remarked that you moved a hydrangea that was too big and blocking the flow of the bed. I did go back and find the bed when it had that bigger hydrangea in it and it is so much better now that you have moved it.

Here in inland central coast of California, Zone 8b/9a, we have had about 6 weeks of nonstop triple digits with a new all time high for our property of 128 according to our personal weather station. Yes, it's drier heat, but still unbearable to work in.
Most of my gardening time is spent harvesting fruit this time of year (peaches, nectarines, apples and a 15 ft. Row if blackberries with pears and more apples to come) into October, when our persimmons start ripening and they continue into December/January.
So my poor flower garden gets pretty neglected until fall, but I try to do a little maintenance every day. We acquired a patio umbrella on a stand to move from place to place to make it more comfortable in our 90% full sun garden. I can't wait for it to start cooling down.

We have been in a heat wave as well in the Canadian prairies; the heat, the mosquitoes, lack of rain, and the plant flop can get a bit defeating, but hopefully it gets better soon. edit: going to get rid of a couple of ligularia as they are water hogs and drought and heat likely will be the norm going forward.

We haven't had rain since late May, though so no storm damage, but we are having to constantly hand water everything 😢....which is horrible in the heat. I live in central Illinois and we also had that brutal heat wave. It came really early this year and ended last week with a brutal storm. We only got one rainfall of an inch during that heat wave. The humidity was so bad I could only go out and work in my garden in early morning or late in the evening. The storm last week brought us relief from the heat ( it has been in the 70’s the last two days😀)and we got a whole two inches of rain! We did not get much damage from the storm but northern Illinois got tornados and hundreds of people are still without power. I have been using this cool week to catch up on my weeding too! Thanks for keeping it real and showing us that gardens are beautiful but require a lot of sweat labor😁

Oh yes, the heat and humidity in my Maryland garden has kept me from doing those maintenance jobs and weeding too. We had an 80 foot pine tree fall down out of the blue. It took out a gingko tree and did some damage to other perennials in the adjacent garden bed. I think that these extreme weather days will be a norm for us.

Danielle, I’m impressed by how much you got done in 90 minutes. It’s so much harder to work in high humidity. And you even got a bouquet in…wow! I cringed when I saw you pull those lilies but to your point you don’t need them for your stand anymore and that area will be an easy care bed for the whole summer. I always delay moving plants to a later time when the weather will be better or when it will be easier on the plant itself or I’m afraid to disturb other plants (my garden isn’t big but it’s jam packed)…and of course winter arrives and I haven’t got it done. In this scorching weather won’t the hydrangea suffer being planted? You inspire me to move my tushy and get to it 😂 Thanks!

We have had temps like 98, 99 and one day of 100! Terrible. The veggies are loving it but my big disappointment has been the coneflowers which bloomed so early, too soon and are now ruined. My pink, orange bloomed for a few days and bam. The white same thing 🥵 Thank goodness I have your relaxing video’s to watch ❤

It’s been hot in Oregon too, and we had a strong wind a few days ago. And mosquitos are abundant too.

Great video! It’s been brutal heat and drought here in Virginia but thankfully it has cooled down a bit and we have gotten some rain! I buy as many of my plants and shrubs in Lancaster county (some from Amish some from English) as I can. The prices are so much better in your area! We make a vacation day out of it so it’s lots of fun!
Question: how and where do you store the sunflower heads until Christmas time?

I was wondering, is there another bush that would be nice in a garden besides hydrangeas? I like hydrangeas but not enough to get them. In a different note, I just propagated some roses, they aren’t anything special but so excited that it worked. Wish I had more time for gardening.

Danielle, what are thoughts on waiting to cut back sunburned/heat damaged foliage until after the heat passes? I feel like I was cutting back sunburned/heat damaged foliage last year in our Texas heat wave, and the new foliage that pushed out basically burned immediately.

In Southern Ontario we've had sooo much rain. I'm hoping to see some dahlias bloom this year as they are all getting eaten by earwigs.

Hi, im in the high desert of California the heat is intense 115! to be exact. I have gladiolus and the leaves are drying out without any blooms, I just started gardening 2 years ago. I've had success with the gladiolus for the last two years but this year i don't know if it's the heat that dried them before blooming, any thoughts or advice?

To keep mosquitos off your face spray bug spray on the underside of the visor of your baseball cap. The bugs will stay away from your face.
