Now when I shop, I look for those details that really make a garment stand out but tastefully. I have concentrated this winter in buying a few needed sweaters and I have been getting compliments. Coco is so cute! I like to organize by color, too, unless I'm putting things that I've worn more recently in the back to see what I'm wearing. Some people hate cleaning out or organizing their closet, but I always find it fun and inspiring (new outfits, new combinations). I enjoy the process, and then I like to see the end results. One thing that I do is keep a limited amount in my closet & dresser drawers. Then I change them out based on season (following the 10 item wardrobe from Jennifer at the Daily Connoisseur.) That way, I'm not overwhelmed by what's in my closet, and I make sure I wear everything.
This has helped me enormously! I have now put my clothes in colour order and listed them. What a deficit in some colours, also clothing. My wardrobe is out of balance ie: too many trousers, only 2 cardigans, skirts I may never wear that do not go with the colours of my 5 summer tops! I haven't started on my shoes yet which need some serious thought for matching to my clothes. Thankyou so much Marie-Anne. Its a life changer and so much fun.

So I organize my blouses into 4 categories. Plain- casual, plain- elegant, print-casual, print- elegant. The plains also to from left to right starting with the lightest, but the prints, I must admit, are kinda random. We'll try to figure out some categories. I learned something similar when I was working retail. When we had clearance racks we realized that we sold almost all of the clothing when it was arranged Nicely versus all mixed up
I really loved this! Of course I learnt so much from your book The Tidy Closet too. My wardrobes are now organised....I have chosen separating prints from solid colours and yes it works for me. It’s now very easy to co-ordinate outfits. Merci Marie-Anne! 😘 to Coco he’s so sweet!

I have done my clothes this way, I did put the purple between my black and navy. My space is dark and for the solid items it was hard to tell them apart. Coco is such a good sport!!

That is how I organised my wardrobe for so many years. This winter I changed the system, it did not work so well, now when I clear my wardrobe to introduce my spring clothes I will revert to the tried and tested way. I loved Coco' s cameo part 😂😂

People have always made fun of me for organizing just like this. I have sub categories of sleeveless, short sleeve then long sleeved tops with each group organized by color. Winter versus summer jackets by color and the same for trousers. Not only does it make it easier to put outfits together but then you don’t buy things you don’t need.

I did organized my closet, I discovered that I used some colors that do not look good on me, second, I went shopping and Zaz! I found this jacket, I remembered what you said... look for “detail”... It had a riveted edging, two little pockets, Chanel style, and best, it suited me nicely. Thank you for all your teaching and suggestions....on my way to be a chic lady.....

I was a department store buyer when I was younger and still sort my clothes by category and color. I also take an inventory of my clothes each season. Maybe a little too OCD? LOL
No, not at all! I started doing this over a year ago. It helps me keep track of things I want to get altered and the number of possible things I might wear for a specific occasion. I get easily overwhelmed by going through the actual closet. I guess I don't worry too much about categories - just separate them into tops, bottoms, and dresses and have a basic, non-strict color gradient so that I can find what I'm looking for.

Just so, I needed more stylish suits, dresses, & heels when I established a private practice as a Professional Mental Health (MH) Counselor - dressier than when I worked in a state MH Clinic & State Hospital with a low income population. Could you show the caregories you divide your clothing into? I notice there were no short sleeve blouses or knit tops. Also how do you store your scarf collection? I've been hanging mine in a section by my cashmere sweaters, but they do take quite a bit of space on hangers! Shoes? I see some on shelves & under your hanging blouses, etc. What size room is your "closet?" I have a wealthy friend whose closet is probably 25 square feet! Interestingly, her clothes don't appear as well organized as yours, although she has many built-ins & even a large rectangular section in the center of her closet! Like a store! I love the crayons in a box analogy. Thank you for the great tips on organizing our closets. I have always done something similar due to a visual impairment I have had since childhood and this organizational system helps so much with the anxiety of not being able to find things without a particular system. Bonjour mon Cherie Marie Anne... Ok I've got a system and it's very easy for me, I've one wardrobe for Navy, one for black, one for just bright colours ie red, pink is etc and then a massive wardrobe just for coats... Then another smaller area for all my jeans and smart trousers.. In my lounge I've a huge five drawer dresser with all my jewellery, watches and all makeup etc etc.. And I pin all my brooches on cushions in lounge and bedrooms.. Hats I store on back of my various doors on hooks etc.. Have a great weekend paulax

I hang my clothes by colour, light to dark, then by sleeve length. Blouses and tops at one end, then sweaters (at least the ones that can hang folded over a hanger; the others are folded on a shelf), then lightweight jackets, then dresses, then pants. My overcoats are kept in the hall closet. The tip about separating navy and black is a good one, that I hadn’t thought of, so a 30-second switchup is in order. But whatever system works for you is the right one. 🙂
Ah, dearest Coco has a great eye for organizing and is cleary supervising your wardrobe! 😁. I started organizing my tops per colour group about 3 years back, but I don't organize them from light to dark as I never thought of it. I would have been much more frustrated with my previous system of choas (I think a video on UA-cam probably took me to the light with regards to wardrobe planning) and am I relieved that I at least have some kind of system in place for my tops. But the rest of my wardrobe is another story, because my wardrobe is an old system and not well planned and I need to find time to plan a workable system with what I have. But ladies, do you also struggle with your shoe system??? Marie-Anne, we can see your shoes have their place in your well organized wardrobe, but the rest of us... At the bottom of the wardrobe on the right hand side I keep my shoes stacked up in boxes and a nightmare to find a spesific shoe (due to insufficient space) , after I worn them once they go to the left hand side (not placed in boxes), to be either worn once more or to be cleaned before putting them back in the boxes on the right hand side. (Living in the hot South African climate I feel especially my sandals need to be cleaned in summer at least once a week). I must admit, the rest of my wardrobe frustrates me and think it is time to do something about it! Thank you for all your practical advice!
Hello Marie-Anne, You and I have the same organizing principles! This is exactly how my closet is organized already - and it is so easy to find things and not waste time looking. A woman after my own heart! 💕 BTW did you ever get hold of the book “Elegance” - if so, what did you think of it? I happened to find it on my shelf the other day and was browsing through it - dated of course but a lot of fun to read. Reminded me of my mother as the advice was written when she was young - she’s still elegant at 88!
My mother showed me how to pull colors together in outfits when I was six. She was an excellent artist. But she never showed me how to arrange my clothes. I managed to figure this out on my own. It’s so funny that you mentioned the crayon box color order, because I have always used this as a guide and to this day, I still use it in my closet. The only difference, is I place the browns and beiges in the warm category coming in after the yellows and the oranges! Then the browns meld into the army greens and so forth. I thought I was the only one who remembered the order of the crayon box. 🤣🤣🤣
Love it! What do you suggest if my closet is small, so each hanger has 1 pair of trousers/pants, 2 shirts and a jacket? I used to do all in the same color and then darkest to lightest, but after seeing some of your videos, I grouped the hanger by the ensemble that best worked together (color, shape, combo, etc)...

I thought I was in good shape with choosing what to wear each day. Now, I suspect that I might be using the ignorance is bliss system. (half joking) Actually, just as there are music notes that put together make a chord, or a set. I tend to remember the pieces (notes) that go into the best outfit combination (the chord). So for one shirt (with its pattern and color) I already know looks best with a given jacket, etc.. So I have outfits and I memorize the best pieces for them. Thanks for the video.

This is also how I organize my tops... light to dark of each color, & from sleeve length, none to long sleeve, left to right. If I didn't do it this way I would certainly have a hard time finding anything!

i will only add , don't hang your knit clothes (sweaters, cardigans) people, but fold them please (especially if they have loose weave) otherwise they stretch out. :P
I organise my clothes in colour categories, but put everything in that category, so blouses, jumpers, cardigans, skirts, trousers of that colour go in that order in their own colour block.
With shirts I do light to prints to colors to darks. I am not a very organized person, but I have to do this. My husband has so many shirts mixed up by colors and season. I organize him once in a while but it never lasts, tho in general he is more organized than I am.
Do you segregate short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and long sleeves in a separate area? I currently sort within the colors, from short to long and in a separate area, sleeveless and camisoles. It is a lot to look at and I still find myself forgetting or not noticing options.
When I started organizing by colour, I found I had too many black short sleeved shirts. Slowly working on increasing my reds, blues, and winter whites. Coco needs to stay with the black so his loose hairs are not noticeable. Too cute!
I have my winter coats on the left, then navy and blue everything, teal everything, pink everything, burgundy everything and lastly beige and white everything on the right. Then there’s a load of apparently vital men’s clothing cluttering up the rest of the rail! Why? 🤣
I have always organised my wardrobe my piece (dresses, tops etc.) And then they are in colour order from light to dark. I say light to dark, my wardrobe is made of shades of white with a bit of pink and black😅
If I put my black cat with my black coat I wouldn’t be able to find her. I know because she sneaks in there all by herself and I have to feel for something breathing to tell her apart from a coat, jacket, or bag.

I did organized my closet, I discovered that I used some colors that do not look good on me, second, I went shopping and Zaz! I found this jacket, I remembered what you said... look for “detail”... It had a riveted edging, two little pockets, Chanel style, and best, it suited me nicely. Thank you for all your teaching and suggestions....on my way to be a chic lady.....

I was a department store buyer when I was younger and still sort my clothes by category and color. I also take an inventory of my clothes each season. Maybe a little too OCD? LOL
No, not at all! I started doing this over a year ago. It helps me keep track of things I want to get altered and the number of possible things I might wear for a specific occasion. I get easily overwhelmed by going through the actual closet. I guess I don't worry too much about categories - just separate them into tops, bottoms, and dresses and have a basic, non-strict color gradient so that I can find what I'm looking for.

Great video, Marie-Annne! Though I've seen several influencers talk about closet organization in front of their massive closets. YOU, however, are the first to SHOW how you ORGANIZE your clothes❗I've organized my pants, sweaters & long sleeve tops, but only pants by color! SEEING this is very helpful! I didn't see any short sleeve blouses. ??? What categories do you organize your clothing into? Do you have other clothing in different closets? Wish I had a larger closet ... or mabe I just have too many clothes I don't wear!?! Just so, I needed more stylish suits, dresses, & heels when I established a private practice as a Professional Mental Health (MH) Counselor - dressier than when I worked in a state MH Clinic & State Hospital with a low income population. Could you show the caregories you divide your clothing into? I notice there were no short sleeve blouses or knit tops. Also how do you store your scarf collection? I've been hanging mine in a section by my cashmere sweaters, but they do take quite a bit of space on hangers! Shoes? I see some on shelves & under your hanging blouses, etc. What size room is your "closet?" I have a wealthy friend whose closet is probably 25 square feet! Interestingly, her clothes don't appear as well organized as yours, although she has many built-ins & even a large rectangular section in the center of her closet! Like a store! I love the crayons in a box analogy. Thank you for the great tips on organizing our closets. I have always done something similar due to a visual impairment I have had since childhood and this organizational system helps so much with the anxiety of not being able to find things without a particular system. Oh, and I love your sense of humor with Coco helping you choose. Tres chic! :-)
Bonjour mon Cherie Marie Anne... Ok I've got a system and it's very easy for me, I've one wardrobe for Navy, one for black, one for just bright colours ie red, pink is etc and then a massive wardrobe just for coats... Then another smaller area for all my jeans and smart trousers.. In my lounge I've a huge five drawer dresser with all my jewellery, watches and all makeup etc etc.. And I pin all my brooches on cushions in lounge and bedrooms.. Hats I store on back of my various doors on hooks etc.. Have a great weekend paulax

I hang my clothes by colour, light to dark, then by sleeve length. Blouses and tops at one end, then sweaters (at least the ones that can hang folded over a hanger; the others are folded on a shelf), then lightweight jackets, then dresses, then pants. My overcoats are kept in the hall closet. The tip about separating navy and black is a good one, that I hadn’t thought of, so a 30-second switchup is in order. But whatever system works for you is the right one. 🙂

Ah, dearest Coco has a great eye for organizing and is cleary supervising your wardrobe! 😁. I started organizing my tops per colour group about 3 years back, but I don't organize them from light to dark as I never thought of it. I would have been much more frustrated with my previous system of choas (I think a video on UA-cam probably took me to the light with regards to wardrobe planning) and am I relieved that I at least have some kind of system in place for my tops. But the rest of my wardrobe is another story, because my wardrobe is an old system and not well planned and I need to find time to plan a workable system with what I have. But ladies, do you also struggle with your shoe system??? Marie-Anne, we can see your shoes have their place in your well organized wardrobe, but the rest of us... At the bottom of the wardrobe on the right hand side I keep my shoes stacked up in boxes and a nightmare to find a spesific shoe (due to insufficient space) , after I worn them once they go to the left hand side (not placed in boxes), to be either worn once more or to be cleaned before putting them back in the boxes on the right hand side. (Living in the hot South African climate I feel especially my sandals need to be cleaned in summer at least once a week). I must admit, the rest of my wardrobe frustrates me and think it is time to do something about it! Thank you for all your practical advice!

A woman after my own heart! 💕 BTW did you ever get hold of the book “Elegance” - if so, what did you think of it? I happened to find it on my shelf the other day and was browsing through it - dated of course but a lot of fun to read. Reminded me of my mother as the advice was written when she was young - she’s still elegant at 88!

My mother showed me how to pull colors together in outfits when I was six. She was an excellent artist. But she never showed me how to arrange my clothes. I managed to figure this out on my own. It’s so funny that you mentioned the crayon box color order, because I have always used this as a guide and to this day, I still use it in my closet. The only difference, is I place the browns and beiges in the warm category coming in after the yellows and the oranges! Then the browns meld into the army greens and so forth. I thought I was the only one who remembered the order of the crayon box. 🤣🤣🤣
Love it! What do you suggest if my closet is small, so each hanger has 1 pair of trousers/pants, 2 shirts and a jacket? I used to do all in the same color and then darkest to lightest, but after seeing some of your videos, I grouped the hanger by the ensemble that best worked together (color, shape, combo, etc)...

Actually, just as there are music notes that put together make a chord, or a set. I tend to remember the pieces (notes) that go into the best outfit combination (the chord). So for one shirt (with its pattern and color) I already know looks best with a given jacket, etc.. So I have outfits and I memorize the best pieces for them. Thanks for the video.

This is also how I organize my tops... light to dark of each color, & from sleeve length, none to long sleeve, left to right. If I didn't do it this way I would certainly have a hard time finding anything!

i will only add , don't hang your knit clothes (sweaters, cardigans) people, but fold them please (especially if they have loose weave) otherwise they stretch out. :P
I organise my clothes in colour categories, but put everything in that category, so blouses, jumpers, cardigans, skirts, trousers of that colour go in that order in their own colour block.
With shirts I do light to prints to colors to darks. I am not a very organized person, but I have to do this. My husband has so many shirts mixed up by colors and season. I organize him once in a while but it never lasts, tho in general he is more organized than I am.

Do you segregate short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and long sleeves in a separate area? I currently sort within the colors, from short to long and in a separate area, sleeveless and camisoles. It is a lot to look at and I still find myself forgetting or not noticing options.

When I started organizing by colour, I found I had too many black short sleeved shirts. Slowly working on increasing my reds, blues, and winter whites. Coco needs to stay with the black so his loose hairs are not noticeable. Too cute!

I have always organised my wardrobe my piece (dresses, tops etc.) And then they are in colour order from light to dark. I say light to dark, my wardrobe is made of shades of white with a bit of pink and black😅
