Toby Keith wrote this song in response to 9/11. When he wrote it he didn’t intend to release it because it was too raw and personal, and he thought the line “put a boot in your ass” was too…crude. But he got talked into it. And as an American, I’m glad he did.

I think the original lyrics were "a mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in Iraq" and everyone was like...."ummm no it didn't Toby you can't say that" so he changed it and pretty much everyone was fine after that. At least that's how I was always told the story. I'm a massive leftist and this song is my absolute ANTHEM. This was almost a love song from Toby Keith to his fellow Americans during a time we all felt so desolate and scared after 9/11. Family members and friends were signing up to serve and being shipped overseas, that was scary. This song filled us with the American spirit and tenacity again, reminding us we were proud, and we fight back when knocked down. He got us on our feet again with this song. He had another song written specifically to American soldiers, titled American Soldier, this was a beautiful song full of love for the men and women who serve our military. Til the day Toby Keith died he supported the military and veterans making sure they knew we're grateful and they're loved and understood. It was something deeply personal to him.

I promise you... it WAS a threat until it was a reality. Toby passed away recently and he never forgot 9/11. He also never forgot our military soldiers. He almost became the unofficial military spokesperson. 9/11 was a challenging day for all of us here: it took a while for us to really 'handle' our anger ("the Angry American") but when we did, we made sure to tell the world what happens when we are attacked. They hoped to break us when they did what they did that day, but as President Bush said on the very evening of 9/11--- they have failed. And they did: the only thing they really did was make us stronger, angrier, and meaner. That evening, President Bush said we'll make no distinction between those who attacked us, and the people who harbor them. We made good on that promise. Toby did too.. he dedicated his career to the military after that. Some of his final performances even featured real-life military reunion surprises. RIP Toby, a TRUE American patriot and unapologetic friend of the US Military!

I was in the army when Toby came out with this some- the entire bar would go insane and sing along when ever it came on. It was one of the most patriotic feelings I’ve ever had- I had the privilege of guarding Toby when he went to camp Casey s Korea with the USO for a 4th of July concert in 2002. Nicest guy I ever met! I reached out to Shake his hand and said “sir it’s a honor to meet you”. And no kidding he said “no sir! I’m just a singer your the hero it’s an honor to meet you.” What the hell- how humble! Sadly, Toby passed in February 2024. He has a ton of hits & is a GOAT of country. Literally the 3rd richest country entertainer in the world. His song 'American soldier' is another amazing patriotic one, with less aggression. LOL He is also known for his humor & his videos are legendary. "As good as I once was', 'Trailerhood', 'How do you like me now?', 'Red solo cup' & so many more funny ones. His duet with Willie Nelson 'Beer for my horses' has a video like a mini movie. It's great too. Always go for his videos. If you want to cry, his tribute to his friend 'Cryin' for me, Wayman's song' is just beautiful. Toby had many sides & I am grateful he left such a rich legacy of music for us to enjoy.

I grew up in Texas with 50 years of southern hospitality. People helped each other and people were friendly. We had to move out of Texas cause my 13 year old daughter got Long Covid in 2020 and we went on the news to warn people. Suddenly we were the enemy. People thought we were trying to scare people into masks and vaccines. We received death threats and even our own family turned on us. My daughter's lifelong friends turned on her. We just wanted to save kids. The funny thing is...we never discussed politics with anyone but people labeled us anyway. It's America against America now....even down to family members against family members. Covid changed everything I loved about Texas. My daughter is still suffering from complications after 4 years at 17 years old now and my family and our old friends haven't called to check on us...because we believe in Covid. So stupid. I miss the old days. This song is beautiful. Thank you for reacting to it. ❤ (Btw, my husband is British and I'm American and we relate to your channel so much and have fun watching it.) 😁

If you ever come to the USA there are several places where you can drive tanks and various other military vehicles, you can even fire a round from the main gun, expensive but it is a cool experience.

Yes, Toby Keith had so many hit songs, fun songs, sexy songs, tender songs, and patriotic songs. Its 23 years later and I still cry when I hear this song because it helped me release the rage I felt after 9/11. I'm a Native New Yorker, and of course, an American. Thanks for checking out this song. If you want just plain fun, check out 'Who's Your Daddy'.. it is actually based on the truth of what his landscaper would do while he was on tour.

Another good song is Proud to be An American. It came out when American Posts and family housing were being bombed by suicide bombers in 2 ton trucks. I took coffee out to my husband and other soldiers who guarded our quarters, schools and parking areas in Germany. This song brings me to tears, but incredible pride too! My husband and I met while we were in the military. Our families have served in almost every conflict from the Revolution. Damn Proud to be an American.

Such a beautiful song.

Clint Eastwood love the song so much that he used it in his movie ""Mule". It broke my heart when he passed away and the memory of seeing him sing that song crushed me. Guess God love him so much too that I can just can just imagine God going to all his concerts in Heaven. There is a reason for living and dying and Toby lived his life with all the gusto he had.😭🤧💔
