@Tiberian Fiend I'd love to see that. While I don't know for sure, I suspect the reason PepsiCo divested itself of Yum had to do with competition in the fountain business. Because they owned three major fast food chains (Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut), Coca Cola ran trade advertisements which claimed that serving Pepsi products was tantamount to bankrolling the competition. Pepsi even sued Coke on at least two occasions alleging unfair competition in its campaign for fountain deals. Eventually, PepsiCo realized that their continuing ownership of the three chains was ultimately hurting its ability to grow its market share and sold it off. Since then, PepsiCo has used FritoLay to win fountain deals, with some success. Two years ago the Washington Redskins ended a longtime partnership with Coke to serve Pepsi products at their home games, citing FritoLay as a primary reason. A few years before that Buffalo Wild Wings switched from Coke to Pepsi for the same reason, and the NBA chose Pepsi as its official soft drink sponsor on FritoLay's strength as well. Arby's, which switched from Pepsi to Coke last year, had given its previous contract to Pepsi in the hopes of serving FritoLay products, but that never seemed to materialize. However, Pepsi's overall market share in the fountain business is slightly smaller today than it was before spinning off Yum due to the explosive growth of fast casual chains, an overwhelming majority of which serve Coke products.
@@TiberianFiend Which ones? Most Burger King franchises in my region have Coke Freestyle fountains, and I think some Wendy's franchises do too. However, I have yet to see one at McDonald's. One thing I appreciate about Burger King is that the franchises around me not only have a Freestyle fountain inside the dining room, but also at the drive thru window, so you can get many of the same flavor combinations without having to go inside (which is nice if you're on a time crunch). Pepsi does in fact have a counter fountain called Pepsi Spire, but I have yet to see one in person. I understand there's a Dairy Queen about 50 miles from me that has one, but the closest Dairy Queen to my house has Coke products, and yes, they also have a Freestyle fountain. Part of the reason why Coke holds a majority of the US fountain market is due to the fact that Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, and Subway all have Coke products. (Interestingly enough, Subway also sells FritoLay products, yet they haven't had Pepsi products here in the States since circa 2004.) McDonald's in particular is a big one, because they sell more fountain drinks than just about anyone else. In fact, they serve so much Coke that the concentrate is delivered to the franchises in steel tanks, while most others buy it prepackaged.
@@hotwax9376 I've seen the Coke machines in Five Guys, PDQ, and Firehouse Subs. Haven't seen them in a Burger King or Wendy's yet. They just rebuilt a Burger King near me, so maybe they put one in there, but I don't go to Burger King, so I'll probably never find out.

I remember being younger and seeing pretty much every single chips bag having the frito-lay brand on the back. They're super big, and most just don't know it
My first ever job was on Walther Farms, a potato farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They grew seed potatos that were harvested, shipped to Georgia, and planted to later become Lay's potato chips.
I lived the chip and soda wars and it is confusing to someone not from Dallas, but we saw these companies every day, and we just know the stories, like; ay ya ya ya, I am the Frito Bandito. I love Fritos corn chips, I love them I do, why don't you just join me and have some of them too." That package came with a Frito Bandito pencil eraser in the shape of the bandito. It was a big hit. Brother James
Suggestion: it would be great if you included the inflation-adjusted amounts and let us know what the value was back then. For instance, $100 in 1932 would be equivalent to $1,875 today. That makes a big difference to me as the story is being told.
I suppose but I prefer to deal in the absolute numbers because if I provide the comparison that instantly dates the video. Plus I think everyone understands the concept of inflation.
I've known for a long time that Pepsico owned a massive chunk of the snack food brands we consume including FritoLay, but it's still interesting to see the history behind it.

My apologies to grandma.
@Kush Man I'm not doing it for the likes I'm doing it for Grandma's good name
God bless the algorithm that brought this channel to my recommendation page. I’ve been binging these videos like a Netflix series.
The section talking about Fritos made me so hungry... I haven't had Fritos in months, even a year...
Fritos are good but I can’t act like they aren’t the sad bags left in the cabinet from the variety packs
Can we get one on Yum Brands and why Pepsico spun them off?
@@hotwax9376 Are those restaurants with those fancy Coke mixing machines? Strange that I've never seen a counter from Pepsi.
You should do a video on colleges since they are a business
Hell yea

Am I the only person feeling old that flaming hot cheetos were out when he was in 1st grade?
I was thinking "first grade, late nineties, what are you, 12?"
@@oldpolishguy253 frito lay test market. They were testing the first flaming hot here around 91
Yeah, I was in first grade in 1978.... Flamin Hot was not a thing back then.... Also the chip bags were full. We Had Frito Lay, Jays, and Burner chips back then as well as Wise brand and Pringles
When I was in first grade Herman Lay was kicking my chair in class.
I'm in first grade and you just helped me figure out what fritolay means! Thanks company man!

I know it might be niche, but I need a video about D'addario, the music industry's biggest hidden gem company.
But D’addario also owns steel manufacturing and reed companies and about a million other things. Anybody who’s ever played an instrument has probably come into contact with something D’addario.

I've been looking for an opportunity to say this... as much as I like this guy's content, he sounds like he just woke up in EVERY FUCKING VIDEO. Does he make these vids literally rolling out of bed at 4am?
You don’t know how glad I was to see this video pop up, I needed something good to distract me from my dog who died only hours ago 😖
Brandon Martinez 😢 I’m sorry for your loss ❤️
I would be interested in a more in depth video on Frito Lay whether it covered the development of their flavors, marketing, or a combination.
And ONLY when I JOINED THE TEAM, they went from #14 in the United States to #1 in the NATION 2 years in a ROW!!! ON EVERYTHING I LOVE ❤️
I've never wondered this but always just knew what frido lay was and what they made. You should look into the story of hot cheetos. That one is very interesting.
Me:*sees video*
TV:*shows ad about Lays Potato chips*
I guess it was meant to be
Technically Frito Lay is part of PepsiCo, bigger than you know! Even their chips and snack division is part of an even bigger conglomerate!
He mentioned that in the video. Did you watch the video before commenting?
Donald Baird I know that, I made a joke saying PepsiCo is bigger than you know!
My granda was a delivery man fritolay for 45yr. For once I actually know the whole video you put forth and it is still amazing to think of the inspiring story of those 2
I 1000% support the idea of expanding on this topic
I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only person who doesn't like grandma's cookies. Bleck
You take that back
Hey that’s my grandpa. Ask me if you want to know any more about Herman
Have you ever met him?
PLEASE start a series or two on advertising! I'd REALLY like to see a "History of Modern Advertising" series and a series that focuses on the advertising campaigns/histories of individual companies, like Budwieser's advertising prime(especially with the three frog series) or Geico's shift in advertising that led to, what, a decade now(longer???) some of the most unique and original concepts.
I would LOOOOVE to see this kind of advertising content!
"so if i ever get my hands on a time machine, i would show this video to my past self, and maybe prevent WW2, but this first"
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Do the in depth video.
PepsiCo is one of my favorite stocks, and it's basically because of FritoLay.
I remember being younger and seeing pretty much every single chips bag having the frito-lay brand on the back. They're super big, and most just don't know it
When you storm area 51 you will get that time machine.
My first ever job was on Walther Farms, a potato farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They grew seed potatos that were harvested, shipped to Georgia, and planted to later become Lay's potato chips.
Gotta love Frito Lay. Poor conditions and forced overtime. Don’t miss it!
Mike Hayes facts
we need the pepsico video, also pepsico bought a shit ton of brands in other countries
We need a pepsiman video
Oh my god! Like, 97% of the chip aisle is one company?
Existential Crisis Loading.... Please Wait.
Legend has it that Elmer Doolin's mother pawned her wedding ring to help her son get the money for the Fritos recipe.
Brother James
fun fact: the frito-lay logo is just the lays logo with a larger, longer banner
In Europe, appart of UK, this brand is called lays
And the back says "PepsiCo", not "Frito-Lay" 😉
The 4 elements:
Water, fire, earth, and lays chips
Suggestion: it would be great if you included the inflation-adjusted amounts and let us know what the value was back then. For instance, $100 in 1932 would be equivalent to $1,875 today. That makes a big difference to me as the story is being told.
I suppose but I prefer to deal in the absolute numbers because if I provide the comparison that instantly dates the video. Plus I think everyone understands the concept of inflation.

@@companyman114 you forgot about Sabritas which is also own by FritoLay
@@putitomalo3997 ....what?
I've known for a long time that Pepsico owned a massive chunk of the snack food brands we consume including FritoLay, but it's still interesting to see the history behind it.
