I grew up about a quarter mile from Al Copeland and a BIG tradition was to go drive by his house and see the lights. Once when my own kids were babies, we walked through the lights tour and he was there greeting everyone! I also remember my hubby and his friends going over to Al’s house when we were in high school to look at his many expensive cars. He was really an extravagant character that is the truth, but a real part of what New Orleans was, and is. The whole city and state mourned when he died.
Big Al was interesting to say the least. I used to be friends with one of his kids and many times I would go over to that house and see Big Al coked up out of his mind. You also forgot how he bought speed boats, tons of cars and was always in mardi gras parades.
Popeyes screwed up when they don't do background checks on employees. What does Popeyes do, pluck them off the boat while they are illegal immigrants and say you got a job?
I love Popeyes, or maybe I should say I loved Popeyes. Our local one had many good specials, and I would drive several miles to go pick up chicken from there. But like too many places now, the price is have gone up spectacularly, and that makes it not quite worth driving the distances that I used to. I noticed at the restaurant isn't nearly as full as it used to always be, and the lines that used to be down the block at certain hours of the day and on the weekend I have shrunk dramatically. I hope those prices don't drive them out of business!
VS is crazy expensive for lower quality than they used to have. Adore Me carries more sizes, is online, and has more colors/styles. Aerie is the best mall brand atm.
Ah, yes, I remember Popeyes well. As a young man, I moved to New Orleans in 1977. I remember their explosive growth, and Al’s Christmas Lights ( just a few miles from where I lived.) And Popeyes was good, their food was tasty. A very pleasant change from the usual franchises fare. KFC was exciting in the 60’s, but (in my mind), Popeyes blew them out of the water. And I remember the whole Church’s thing. OMG, that was a WTF moment. At the time, everyone was scratching their heads about it. No surprise that Church’s was going downhill. Their food was bland, and nothing about them set them apart from their competitors. I pretty much stopped eating fried food (and fast food) in the 90’s, so everything about the last 20+ years was new information to me. Excellent presentation as always!
Al started the company and got to coke it up with stirppers for 30 years on yachts in beautiful locations. the average male lifespan of 70 years. Good for him.
'Love that chicken from Popeyes', lol, it is pretty good. Biscuits are, imho, better than kfc... And the sides work as well. I'm glad they're still around.

I've met Al Copland my dad worked for him and his son for years. He defiantly was a personality. He started doing recipes in his garage with the chicken. He also had Coplands and Coplands Cheesecake Bistro both chains are still in Louisiana.
I just pray that it never completely disappears or that the recipe changes. I can't imagine a world without Popeyes :p That said, there's a lot of talk about the biscuit recipe changing some years back. People seem to remember they were much fluffier and stayed fresh longer, with the new ones being like "dried hockey pucks", yet Popeyes claims they never changed their recipe. Always found this a bit odd, but I don't remember the 'original' biscuits, so I honestly don't know...
I do feel like they have changed over the 10 years I've been going there, but I thought it just came down to the workers not doing a good job making them. But now that I read this, it DOES seem more consistently bad than that. The biggest difference I noticed is they are much less buttery.
@@sultanofsick , @QbMaster2003, , I believe the change could be to make the biscuits more delivery friendly, as well as storing longer. Buttery biscuits would likely disintegrate more easily.
@@sultanofsick , @jim-205 I just had some Popeyes today, and those biscuits were super buttery! This was a different location than I typically go to, so I'm thinking there's some credibility to the idea that the workers control at least some of the biscuit quality.

Avery the Cuban-American, "oye, panita..." We don't have it here in the Island, as in Popeyes franchisee here hasn't brought the larger spicy chicken sandwich yet. It looks about as big as today's KFC's Big Crunch, but with only one large piece of chicken rather than 2 regular ones (it had gotten smaller since they began to sell it, as I couldn't originally bite both pieces at the same time). But I assume the combo will cost more than the U$6.89 + tax they charge for the sauced / unsauced version of a regular sized sandwich they sell nowadays... (I've seen "emmymadeinjapan" tasted the new Popeyes spicy in RI and the combo was > U$8)
Avery the Cuban-American, well... The local Popeyes franchisee is already placing teaser ads on TV about THAT sandwich. I've asked the manager of one of my local stores and he said he'd just received the promo materials, so I do have to believe they will be available in Puerto Rico by mid-December '19 (about 2-4 weeks from typing). If it is to replace the sandwich they sell locally it'd be like U$6.89 + tax for the combo (roughly -10% than "emmymadeinjapan " paid in RI). Since there's no CFA's in the Island it is up to Wendy's and Church's Chicken to come with something to compete (KFC doesn't have ANYTHING to compete even Stateside and McD's, well...).
Popeyes takes that a bit too literally sometimes. 😄 We tend to move a bit slow in Louisiana, and Popeyes’ service is generally really bad compared to other restaurants.
As someone who grew up in New Orleans, I can tell you guys. That yes to see Al Copeland's house during Christmas time was amazing. When I was a kid, my family and I would drive around his neighborhood. Eventually his neighbors started decorating as well. Since so many people would drive by his house.
there’s this combination restaurant by me with Popeyes and Burger King, it’s the only Popeyes for miles. Found it weird that the two were together, but I guess I know why. Good video
I recall that both Church's and Popeyes were owned by an Atlanta firm in the early 2000s and had even shared the recipe for spicy chicken until they split off and Church's developed their own (no longer under the same company). Finishing this video leaves me with the impression that they are still together and that they only went from being Louisiana-based to Canadian-based, unless the Canadian financiers set up AFC in the USA and they moved to Atlanta.
Emmett Turner, actually... RBI (Restaurant Brands, Inc.), the owners of Popeyes, BK and Tim Hortons is NOT Canadian. It is owned by 3G Capital (an investment group who's half-owner of KraftHeinz with Warren Buffett's company having the rest), whose main owner is the richest person in Brazil, so it'd be the 2nd time BK is foreign-owned (the predecessors of Diageo used to own BK). Oh, and in the middle of the video my BK's local franchisee "entered the chat"...
@@syxepop AFC was Atlanta-based for a time though that was never mentioned or touched on. Because AFC was created by the Canadian financiers who owned Popeye's and Church's after the bankruptcy, the implication was that they were Canadian even though they weren't.
Emmett Turner, Mike (CM) mentioned the name of the Canadian bank (Imperial Bank of Commerce) that owned (by debt incurred) and created AFC. Nothing related to RBI's "other Canadian investment", Tim Hortons...
In the early 2000s I lived within walking distance of a Church's. I was about a mile from a KFC. What did I do? I drove 6 or 7 miles to the nearest Popeyes!
Popeyes has always been consistently good in my experience. However, Church's quality is questionable depending on the franchise owner. I've never been a KFC fan. Around here, KFC has usually meant smaller pieces of chicken for more money. Also to KFC, what's with the barf bowl?
I grew up with Popeyes. I LOVE me some Popeyes. I've had KFC a few times. Thought it was okay. Never had Church's but my dad and brother did. They said it was greasy as hell.
I enjoy this channel. Great for taking a break from true crime podcasts or war documentaries, which are my staples. He adds just enough quirky, fun commentary to the content, which is both comprehensive yet not too drawn out. Well done!
I never paid attention to _Popeyes_ until after High School (2003). I'd always get tenders, rice beans & rice (less beans, more rice) and a dozen biscuits. They biscuits were so good that I'd wait for a fresh new batch. _Oooh, oooh, oooh, the one on the top left and then the one right under it._ I was hella picky and made sho' to get the best ones.
I remember as a kid id eat popeyes and then it vanished, then it came back and its my favorite chicken place. Cant eat kfc anymore, taste bland compared.
I agree It's good. It's 2nd to chick fil a but 1st over Wendy's homestyle Asiago sandwhich. Wendy's are skimpy on the Asiago which is all the taste. Popeyes need more spices on there's haven't tried the spicy one.
Popeyes has been quite successful in Canada. I expect they have more locations in Ontario then KFC now. Church’s who exited Canada are back slowly adding locations too. The company certainly has a checkered past. Having said that the original owner is laughing all the way to the bank.
Since you mentioned Arthur Anderson I thought I would add a fun fact I work in the old CEO offices of Arthur Anderson and if you like the word extravagant you should see the offices as all the walls are like secret entrances since there is no door knob but rather you need to pull a hook in between the walls to open them and the closets are huuuuge
When I was a kid, we lived in Kenner. I remember my mother driving us to see the Al Copeland's house and telling us that it was a Christmas tradition to see the lights on his house. I hadn't thought of that in years. Thanks for the video.
I’m assuming all the press coverage over their chicken sandwich was what inspired the video on Popeye’s. So a couple of ideas came to mind about what more to say about them in a future video: (1) The recent business press coverage for Popeye’s mentioned using the sandwich as the basis for international expansion. What do those plans look like, and is that a good idea given the current state of the fast food industry? (2) A revisit of the ”more than you know” episode for Tim Hortons/Burger King/Popeyes. Maybe even a comparison between them and Yum! Brands, since that seems to be their business model. (3) My wife sees the chicken sandwich as Popeye’s version of the McRib - something that should be held back and released occasionally to build up sales rather than a permanent menu item. Maybe a comparison of McDonald’s business strategy with the McRib and Pompey’s sandwich, and other products that used “limited time” appeals to generate interest.
I've gone to Popeye's SIX SEPARATE TIMES over the course of multiple months trying to buy their new Spicy Chicken Sandwich that's front-and-center in their advertising, and every time they've told me it's sold out. I don't even want that dumb sandwich that much, I'm just mad I can't have it. At first it was a weird addiction that kept me going, now I've hit some frustration point where I don't think I'll ever go there again.
Popeye's spicy chicken sandwich was all hype and hoopla! Much ado about nothing! Too much fried batter. I have eaten a spicy chicken sandwich at an A&W in Montreal, Canada, that tasted better!

Ah, yes, I remember Popeyes well. As a young man, I moved to New Orleans in 1977. I remember their explosive growth, and Al’s Christmas Lights ( just a few miles from where I lived.)
And Popeyes was good, their food was tasty.

That said, there's a lot of talk about the biscuit recipe changing some years back. Always found this a bit odd, but I don't remember the 'original' biscuits, so I honestly don't know...
@QbMaster2003,
the old biscuit was what made me remember popeyes
I do feel like they have changed over the 10 years I've been going there, but I thought it just came down to the workers not doing a good job making them. But now that I read this, it DOES seem more consistently bad than that. The biggest difference I noticed is they are much less buttery.
@@sultanofsick , @QbMaster2003, , I believe the change could be to make the biscuits more delivery friendly, as well as storing longer.

@@sultanofsick , @jim-205 I just had some Popeyes today, and those biscuits were super buttery! This was a different location than I typically go to, so I'm thinking there's some credibility to the idea that the workers control at least some of the biscuit quality.

"I'll cut a fool if he gets between me and my Popeyes" does have a nice ring to it. Might make a great slogan for them in the future.
I heard there chicken sandwich is to die for ;)
Sorry...I tried it. Not GOOD!!!!Disappointed!!!

I’m assuming all the press coverage over their chicken sandwich was what inspired the video on Popeye’s. So a couple of ideas came to mind about what more to say about them in a future video:
(1) The recent business press coverage for Popeye’s mentioned using the sandwich as the basis for international expansion.
