    You can't compete with Amazon in retail, but you can compete in service. Best Buy has done this well.

      cpk1994 but they're already branching off into the retail market, with the purchase of whole foods and their new cashier-less grocery store. they could also start an in store pickup type of service where you order online and pick it up at a physical location

    • @the.abhiram.r
      @the.abhiram.r 5 років тому +9

      cpk1994 it's more about the convenience factor. people would much rather get an item the same day they ordered it rather than waiting 2+ days to get it. they already dominate general retail and a few physical stores where people can pick up their orders would solidify their position in retail. best buy and walmart already have similar services. i know from personal experience that i would rather go to walmart or target to get something rather than ordering it from amazon and waiting for it to ship to my house

      You can totally beat Amazon in retail, yes Amazon has a ton of products, but will they be in perfect condition when they arrive, or do you want to set and wait a day or two to get it, or would you rather go to a shop and get it and have it when you want it, plus Amazon delivery cost extra even if you have prime you are still paying $100 to $10 extra instead of just going out and getting it your self costing only the price of the item you want, also customer service.

      I think Amazon is kinda a sham, might see a video about em someday. The problem is they seem to claim all of their sellers earns even though they only get a 10-15% cut (this number could be off it has been a while since I sold online).
      That being said, I don't really enjoy Bb's customer service. Have never really had a memorable pleasant experience there and more than a couple bad ones lol

    It seems like they have been adding more and more mini showrooms within the stores too. If Samsung wants to have a good presence inside of Best Buy, they pay Best Buy to have a little Samsung area inside of the store. That way, even if they person ends up buying online, Best Buy still gets paid and Samsung still gets paid.

The thing that went wrong had nothing to do with the pipe fitting, but they refused to even listen to me or what was wrong when they heard I had someone other than them fix a pipe leak. @GamingTV The main advantage Best Buy has over Amazon is knowledgeable staff. TV's, computers, and camera's are complicated stuff, and having a person explain the differences between products is helpful to a lot of the technologically illiterate. They're model works because they're able to convert show room shoppers into sales, plus they offer services that can save a ton of hassle like TV and Appliance delivery.

    • @bilbosaggins9321

      @GamingTV Well if you don't have a store close by then why the heck would you choose in-store pickup? Just have it shipped to your home by then.
      Bestbuy offers free shipping on items $35+. And that's with no membership. For Amazon's free shipping you need prime, and lets be honest here, Prime video is not that good anyways.

Modern usually involves some actual style change--usually to clean it up or make it more minimalistic. Visually, it looks imbalanced and awkward.

    Honestly it's so nice to see a "good news" story of a company that has survived the rise of amazon. I'm old fashioned, there are some things that I don't want to buy online. Like you mentioned, the little things like charging cables. But also the really big ticket, large items, like TVs or Appliances, or things like phones... if I'm going to drop several hundred dollars on something, I want the show room experience, especially by knowledgeable staff. But I also want to take it home, or at least have it delivered by the company themselves, like Art Van for Furniture or Sears or Best Buy for appliances, I don't want my expensive new flatscreen that couldn't fit in my tiny car to be delivered by USPS or UPS where it's just another box to knock around and get lost. I want company reps delivering and (if needed) installing whatever it is. Of course Sears is gone, but Best Buy seems to be taking over that niche for appliances.
    Not a fan of the logo, but like you I'm used to and "trust" the old logo.

Not to mention the fact that Mexicans are adapting to Amazon and it’s biggest rival in Latin America: Mercado Libre. How are Mexicans buying stuff in those websites if they considerate them non trustworthy and almost a scam? Simple. Put e-cards in convenient stores so they won’t sign in with their credit or debit cards. Still, same people who are adapting to e-commerce in Mexico, same people who are buying stuff in Best Buy. If you were to walk in and I helped you, you wouldn't even know I was autistic. Good idea boosting services. I'm not going to order a dishwasher from amazon and lug that thing up the stairs, spend hours installing it, then lug the old one away, Best Buy did it in 20 minutes and for almost free. I guess they worked something out with the dishwasher manufacturer where they pay the cost. I had to pay an extra $30 for parts and like $20 for the haul away, +tip.

    • @cpvidscenteral
      @cpvidscenteral 5 років тому

      @Atoms Molecules Amazon's installer's are also farmed out to third parties. Which is determined by your location and drastically increases delivery time. Had it happen with a TV a few years ago and the setup was pretty awful.

    • @cpvidscenteral
      @cpvidscenteral 5 років тому +1

      @Atoms Molecules If the setup is free I'm not going to turn it down, like Best Buy, purchases over a certain dollar amount are free install. I've set up plenty of TV's. Funny enough, the people that talk like it's the easiest thing they've ever done typically handle the TV wrong and risk cracking the panel. Anyways the whole "you're better off buying from Amazon" is a baseless and stupid claim. Wait for delivery, hope it didn't get fucked up so you don't have to wait for it to be sent back for a replacement, etc. And hopefully you weren't stupid enough to buy from a third party seller that will just dick you over.
      If you're buying small, inexpensive shit, sure go for Amazon. High dollar electronics there is more security in just buying from a brick and mortar store. I get leaving your house can be hard, but really.

It didn’t result in a good ending as the system had an issue with shipping the harness for the car. 14 days would pass and after a month I gave up on the delightful idea as it seemed to never be happening due to my work and timing with their installment dates. What the video does not mention is that they invest a lot in their company culture - Have Fun while Being the Best - is one of their key company values. Placing posters saying 'We are all here because of our customers" in office whole ways helpes employees see the connection between the work they do and how it impacts the end customer. They also focus on process improvement initiatives and creating a new culture in IT that switched from waterfall delivery to Agile / Scrum approach. Best Buy is just good with creating the right team cultures and as you know the right people who do not feel work as work anymore make money for the company. I will forever be thankful for the experience I got working there and for all the wonderful people who I met along the way.

      @4 Touchdowns Al Bundy ive been working for best buy for about 3 years now. And i can tell you the bonuses are kind of unfair if you ask me since the bonus multiplier is diffrent depending on the department you work for. The computers bonus for example can range anywhere from 30-250$ while the mobile reps bonuses can range anywhere from 200-800$. So essentially we have to work our asses off to reach budget just to get 30$ while the mobile department can do the ssme thing but they'll get 200$ instead

    i honestly think amazon kinda shot itself in the foot, which is why bestbuy is doing well now. amazon shot itself in the foot with it's prime shipping. free 2 day shipping made people accustomed to getting shit quicker. well... what's quicker than now? with bestbuy's prices getting competitive, and with the order online instore pickup, they beat amazon at it's own game. plus some of best buy's extended warranties are worth the money. my sister's husband replaced his ps4 at least 5 times with that $50 warranty. walk in with a busted ps4, walk out with a new one.

      dippst the questionhow can Best Buy sustain these prices with all this overhead. Seems like all they did was shrunk they haven’t really added anything new. Not to mention Best Buy stores tend to not even have the stuff they sell which forces you to order online at they can’t beat 2 day shipping. Seems the end is still inevitable unless they add additional revenue streams though i do believe they charge Samsung and other brands for space

    • @dippst
      @dippst 6 років тому +11

      they do have more overhead than amazon, but they offer things amazon doesnt, like geek squad for instance. with all the customer-oriented services they offer, usually for a fee, it's not hard to see how they compete.best buy also has it's own house brands, which boost profits. amazon isnt as invested into the electronics market as bestbuy, for good reason. that's not their main business, it's a side venture for them. it makes sense for bestbuy to have insignia and rocketfish to boost profits while offering either budget friendly or premium products without seriously eating into the name brand sales.
      insignia mostly competes with westinghouse and hisense, not really high end brands. rocketfish is a direct competitor to monster cables, a well known overpriced cable company. they dont try to compete with samsung, sony or lg in the mid or upper tier electronics ($700+ tvs, av receivers and amplifiers, bluray players etc). basically, they know where the name brands are most profitable, so they compete in the other markets. those brands still sell well, so they get better pricing.

    One thing you missed that is huge. Partnerships with their vendors. Magnolia Audio Video, Pacific Sales, Samsung, Microsoft just to name a few. Rather than foot the costs on their own, Best Buy charges space for their vendors to sell their wares there. It is brilliant. Amazon does thing differently and in a much larger scale. Best Buy was and is great because they saw the giant first and did what the others didn't do. Best Buy had the courage to keep their business alive. I worked at Best Buy as the Geek Squad tech, and a blue shirt seller of anything except appliances. I was their goto guy. It was fun. And no the shirt in my avatar is a Subaru WRX shirt not a Best Buy shirt. I love what Best Buy is doing. Allot of people bash them allot. Honestly, I like Best Buy. The employees lately seem to know their stuff and none of them (aside from the Comcast reps that hang out in there) really try to push me to buy anything. Last month, I needed to buy a monitor for my PC and went in asking what one I should get. The salesperson was pretty knowledgeable about the monitors and even recommended a specific one that I ended up buying. It was even a little cheaper on Amazon, so I was able to price match that. And then the price of the monitor dropped two weeks later (whoops) so I called the customer support and they refunded the difference, no questions asked since it was still in the return window. And I still have their GCU (Gamers Club Unlocked) plan through November 2019, so I get 20% off all games, even special editions! So I'm glad they're close to my house and prefer them for some more expensive electronics. Amazon has me for cables since they're 1/3 of the price, but I enjoy Best Buy for most everything else.

The customer was pretty upset that they had just spent hundreds of dollars and now the same product was on sale for 30 dollars less. We were able to explain to the customer that with the return / exchange policy window we were able to honor the price and refund the money. No questions asked. I’m so glad Best Buy has been able to turn around and remain profitable.

So a lot of people these days go to Barnes & Nobles for a place to either read or do homework or whatnot, and in the process spend money there on coffee, and on their way to the coffee section, which is in the very back, walk by a few bookshelves which have interesting books on them. I worked for Best Buy from 2008-2015. You did a fantastic job with this video chronicling the turn of events with completely accurate information. I really enjoyed working for the company but left because I was burnt out from the retail aspect and it got to a point where the opportunity for growth didn’t seem to be there as it once was. It’s also important to note that when Hubert Joly came in and the company started downsizing overseas as you mentioned, they also cut tons of leadership positions here in the states at the corporate level. Those corporate leader cuts trickled all the way down to the stores and many locations lost specific supervisor and manager positions like my store did. So I basically dipped out in the middle of “Renew Blue” because the future seemed uncertain. Glad to see the company’s fortunes have turned around as I’m still an avid shopper there and an advocate for the brand.

    Ex Best Buy employee here. Worked at the Geek Squad for 8 of the 9 years I was there. Your info is pretty damn accurate. The turning point definitely was in 2013 when I was a DCI (Geek Squad supervisor). When money was low and businesses were tightening up, Hubert Joly slashed 2,000 jobs at corporate as part of his turnaround plan because he knew if Best Buy was going to make it, they would need their customer-facing employees at the stores. Joly also dropped millions of dollars on training their leadership by whisking us away on a week long training session. I was on my way out as I saw the writing on the wall, but that training session really made me believe in Joly's plan. Stayed another 2 years to execute the plan, then found a better job closer to home. Good memories of Best Buy.

      Once upon a time, they said that about Circuit City too. BB capitalized on the tech boom of the 2010's, and it was enough to carry them through the recession. That, and clever rebranding, and marketing to baby boomers who have a limited grasp of technology. However, the future looks bleak. As boomers retire and become detached from their technology (as happens to all seniors), manufacturers offering better warranties on their products, I see BB floundering. If you do some research, you can easily find better deals elsewhere. Sure they price match, but that only works with volume. Lose a little here, make it back there.

      @@LynxStarAuto You couldn't be any more wrong. First off, you underestimate the lack of understanding that people have of technology and the growth thereof. You'd realize this if you experienced it first hand like I do, almost every day. I work at BBY. It's not just older people that need the assistance we offer in the way of not only our knowledgeable staff, but in-home services as well. The company is adapting most gratuitously with services like Total Tech Support. As far as price matching, there's nowhere else that does it better. If anyone is to flounder in the near future (in the way of retail technology), it's the competition. Whether it be Wal Mart or Costco, or Target. People come to Best Buy for their needs, and the sky is the limit. Next time you're in one of those other stores, TRY asking for knowledgeable advice. You won't get it, I promise. Let alone from an online shopping site like Amazon. Oh, by the way...BBY has already begun its partnership with them, so you can rest assured knowing that your local Best Buy store is leagues away from "floundering" anytime soon. They never have what I want in stock, and Black Friday they are worthless like most other stores. It should be illegal to advertise sales for which 95% of customers will not have the chance to purchase the item. There are way too many people driving all over town to find shit that doesn’t really exist, and creating a lot of anger and problems for the ‘happy time of the year’.

    As a semi truck driver for Best Buy, starting right at the 2020 phase, it was good to see them rebuild and move on. Their emphasis on going high end and expanding to more home appliances opens up what you can get from Best Buy, from a cheap charger to a high end sound system that costs more than most of our cars. Also gave them some big buyers. Peak season in a matter of a few years has gone from November - Jan to it now being August - February, huge sales windows growing. They did it right, and they capitalized on the PC Covid phase by being nVidia's sole retailer and bringing back not only more prebuilts, but the ability to walk in and grab everything you need to build a computer, buy the desk to put it on and get a good monitor / TV and sound to go with it. Hope to see them continue to grow. Also they treat their employee's fairly well, I am content with it

    I left BestBuy in the summer at 2019 after over 5 years with the company. It was a mutual breakup but not a happy one for anyone involved. Also my non disclosure expired earlier this month, so this video popped up in my suggestion at just the right time. Between Q4 2018 and when I left around the end of Q2 2019 the company started rolling back a lot of its customer first policy’s and instituting the types of anti consumer programs that contributed to their initial decline in the first place.
    Couple this with the resignations of Huber Jolly and Sherry Ballard and the subsequent management shake up and market staff restructuring, followed by aggressive labor cuts in the stores, made it a place I didn’t want to stay.
    If this continues I predict a few years where they look financially strong on paper while slowly alienating there customers base and eroding the trust that they worked so hard to build up during Renew Blue and first half of the New Blue.

But the biggest problem, which seems to have leveled-off a bit in the last couple years, admittedly, was the constant pestering by the staff. 'Can I help you?" 'Can I help you?' On and on and on, every ten feet you moved. Like, leave me alone already, if I need help, *I will ask* !! Of course, other store chains also do this to one extent or another, but BB was the worst for years. Would have loved to have 'dressed-down' the company CEO about it at the time. Honestly though the only bad experiences there are when they chase me down and harass me to see if I need help, that's great and all when I actually do, but It definitely gets irritating when it happens 3-4 times in one visit. For instance, about two weeks ago when I was there, they asked if I needed help, and I promptly told them that I was just looking around today killing time, and this guy was legitimately trying to convince me that I was there for something and there was something I was looking for, like I was confused or something. As someone who lives in Canada, I can honestly say that almost everyone disliked Future Shop. It wasn't really that different from Best Buy in its setup, but where it did differ was in one very important point: Future Shop employees worked on commission. Yes, they got a salary, but the bulk of their income was from commission sales, which led to incredibly pushy salespeople and lots of rude/childish interaction between employees. Best Buy, on the other hand, doesn't do commission, so there's none of that pushy behavior or in-fighting.
    I worked at Future Shop in the IPG department (read: computer sales) for during the Christmas season to earn some extra money. Salespeople regularly lied to customers. I don't even mean stretching the truth, but bold-faced lies, and since this was back in 2008, cell phones didn't have the same capabilities they do now, which meant customers - most of whom held very little knowledge regarding computers - had to "trust" the salespeople since they couldn't verify anything themselves until they got home and went on their computers.
    It went beyond lies as well. Salespeople knew the computers were defective (at least at the Future Shop I worked at; this may have been different elsewhere), but that was just used as a way to get customers to come back and purchase expensive plans and security software they most of them didn't need.
    Salespeople also argued and fought with each other a lot, and often in front of customers. Salespeople regularly stole customers from one another because once again, the only thing that mattered was making the sale when on commission.
    To be fair, some of these issues have a lot less to do with Future Shop as a whole and more to do with the people hired, but an environment that not only justifies, but encourages cutthroat competition among its employees will usually attract the sort of people who won't or can't work together as a team.

    I hate how they have continually shrunk their media section. I hope that with this revival it shall return as well! #PhysicalMediaForever!

      as an employee i can tell you that the only physical media thats going to be left in stores after most likely next year will be blu rays/4k blu rays because of the significantly higher quality. my store has already stopped carrying CD's and most DVD's.

      It's such a shame that they continue to shrink their media section. When I first started going to Best Buy, they had the best and largest selection of tv shows, movies, and music. If you wanted a vintage show on DVD you went to Best Buy because they would have it. Same thing for music. Looking for an artist that's not quite mainstream? Go to Best Buy. Sadly, this is no longer true as, over the years, their media selection has continually been downgraded in both variety and size. Their media section now is nowhere near as large as it once was. As well, every time the store in my area re-works their layout, the media section gets smaller and pushed further and further back. There was a time when it was front and center in the store and took up a good fraction of the floor space. Now it's honestly kind of pitiful and it doesn't jump out at you like it once did. There was a point in time where I could go into Best Buy for one or two specific movies or cds, end up browsing their media section for an hour or two and walk out of the store with way more than I'd intended on. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.
      While I can understand why stores are phasing out or will start phasing out physical media, I don't like it. I much prefer physical media to digital media. Always have. Always will. I just feel like physical media is more reliable than digital. I can always pop a DVD or CD in without having to worry that the rights have been revoked or having to watch it buffer every two seconds.

    As a former employee of Best Buy, the company has a lot of interesting internal systems. For the store I worked at, Magnolia and Geek Squad are what made the big money before you consider phone accessories. The best system I saw was a sort of extracurricular system where you could opt to learn about a product for explanation or recommendation to customers, and in return the first X number of associates for the company to do a product's associated module would get a reward. (usually in the form of a discount on said product). That meant you could have your associates actively soaking in new product information, usually at the expense of the vendor who supplies the discount.

    Like your videos. How about Service Merchandise? If you covered that already I apologized but did not see it on your playlist. Also, Marathon candy bars and Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs cereal by Ralston. A couple of restaurants Mr. Dunderbak's (more of a deli) and Farrell's. Both of those restaurants were in my area back in the 80's and 90's but disappeared. They both still have locations and websites so they must have downsized. Thanks

    Gotta say I never really buy at bestbuy anymore because too many times I've encountered employees who aren't knowledgeable about the products. Especially the specifications and what they mean. Also I'm in Canada, and there are a lot more smaller electronics chains which can provide better prices such as memory express and canada computers and electronics.
