Glad you mentioned their old salary cap experiment but you forgot to mention the various "inexpensive" CEO's they had to go through during that time because none had the knowledge of how to keep a company like theirs profitable and growing. It wasn't until after they healized that a truly good CEO (and executives in general) costs real money. I worked for a company headquartered in the Winooski/Burlington VT are in the mid-80s. One of the things that spread their name around was when Pillsbury apparently got stores selling Haagen Dazs to not stock B&J. That got B&J to start the "What’s The Doughboy Afraid Of?" advertising campaign in the northeast. That was just winding down when I was in the area. The other story one of the guys I worked with told me was about the timing of their business startup. Apparently they started in the spring/summer and business was booming with the local college crowd. But then winter (in Vermont) settled in and you can guess what happened to ice cream sales when sub-zero temperatures and blizzards rolled in. But they "weathered" that first winter and kept on rolling.
i'm a simple lady, i see company man videos i gently tap that 👍🏼 it's comforting to know they were in the same place in their late 20s as i am before they started their empire 😀 great video as always, mike!
I love your channel, I think I might have started watching it like a year ago and eversince it has helped me through my IB business management course and im really thankful that you do these kind of videos. Like 3 or 4 weeks ago we were doing an activity about the decline of Canon, so I remembered your video and used it as my answer, I got an excellent grade :) Keep up the great job
When I traveled New England a few years ago, my friend and I did a tour of the Ben And Jerry museum in VT. I highly recommend. It's only a few dollars and you get free ice cream samples. I have a lot of respect for the brand, but can't eat it anymore, because of a dumb soy allergy.
It’s crazy how I can watch so many company man videos and not get bored. Also I have made it my “sleep show” that I turn on right before I’m about to pass out
I visited the Ben & Jerry's factory in the 80s. I don't think they were that plentiful in my state at the time and I hadn't heard of them but we were on vacation in Vermont at the time and it was a fun experience. Now I can get them in my local grocery store.
I love Ben & Jerry's, obviously I don't eat it all the time because it is pricey and ice cream isn't particularly healthy but it's a great occasional treat, and I definitely respect the fact that the original owners were so dedicated to their values And my personal favorite that I've tried is Phish Food
I literally took a tour at the Ben & Jerry's factory in Vermont yesterday on my way back from Burlington and not only do they buy milk from Vermont Farmers but a large percentage of the stock is owned by Vermont residence. on the tour they mentioned some way of Vermont residents have any preferential treatment to buy in the stock around the IPO. It was like 1 in 10 people / families own stocking Ben & Jerry's in VT
My favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's was Cool Britannia. It had strawberries, chocolate covered shortbread cookies, and sweet cream ice cream. They stopped making it about 20 years ago :(.
@@thegoodtony3339 Yeah you're probably right; tbh the first time I heard of them was from someone complaining about their handling of B&J's. Actually the second was something about lead contamination in their packaged noodles; think the only time I really hear their name is when somebody's protesting something they've done. But I guess my only point was, although I'm sure they own a ton of stuff, they don't really seem to advertise their name that much.
A couple things you missed; - Another reason for choosing Burlington, VT is that in 1978 it was one of the largest cities in the northeast without a Baskin-Robbins (still doesn't have one but...have they shrunk?) - In the early '80s Pillsbury owned Haagen-Dazs. They tried to crush Ben&Jerry's by demanding category exclusivity from stores. Thirty years and multiple changes of ownership later, H-D's sales in the Burlington area are at least somewhat better than The Sun's in Liverpool but not quite up to Toyota's in Detroit.
I was kind of hoping for the animaniacs origin story of Ben and Jerry's. Then I remembered copyright strikes are not fun for you to deal with. Great video
Fun fact: Either Ben or Jerry (I can't remember which) attended the summer camp I work at now. Somewhere along the way the camp worked out a deal with them, so in the canteen they sell the small sample cups and let me tell you... Americone Dream is my saving grace while at camp.
I loveeee how much cookie dough and brownie bits such they pit in their ice cream. the amount of cookie dough in the "tonight dough" is more than a full size tub of 99 percent of other brands.
the thing that brought me to liking Ben & Jerry's so much is their variety of dairy-free Ice cream. you'd be surprised at how little dairy-free ice cream can be found outside of major cities. my mom's boyfriend gives me dairy-free Ice cream (made by a different brand) and when we go to the store and we take a look at the Ice cream section, there are only 3-5 options that are dairy-free, and all of those are Ben & Jerry's.
I was initially impressed with Ben & Jerry's for their pledge to use high quality/organic ingredients. But I later heard that some of their items were independently tested & found some of these claims to be false. I'm not sure who to believe.
It's not organic but it's definitely GMO-free. They lost one of their most popular flavors to their crackdown on GMOs. And even though they are in the super-premium range, cost-cutting has led to them raising the overrun, meaning they are skirting the edge of super-premium. That being said, it's still high, high quality commercial ice cream.
I used to love them! However, then I couldn't have milk anymore. Then they made the Non-Dairy stuff and its so nice!!! Especially the chocolate brownie, its like having actual ice cream all over again.
Ben & Jerry's ice cream contains carrageenan, guar gum, natural flavors (i.e. chemicals), soy lecithin, etc. I suspect this wasn't always the case, but seems pretty far from 'all natural.'
Those two guys for some reason remind me of the two soda business owners from that Robin Williams movie RV. But I love B&J's ice cream, the unique flavors are simply enough for me to pay the higher premium
If you are a breastfeeding mom and your supply runs low that oatmeal ice cream will work wonders. I love how Ben & Jerry stood their ground to protect their community
My favorites are Oat of this Swirled and Salted Caramel Core. I love Ben and Jerry’s so much...it’s actually sort of a problem. I think I’m an addict. I need to go to ICAA (ice cream addicts anonymous)
One good part you left out is how in the early days how Pillsbury was trying to bully them out of the market and how they took the fight to the people and made Pillsbury look stupid for trying to take out a small business.
As somebody with a dairy allergy, Ben and Jerry's are actually around the usual price point I pay for anything that won't make me sick. The fact that they actually went and made the ice cream good on top of that... Well I'm a fan.
They need to bring back The Late Night Snack. Vanilla ice cream with caramel swirl filled with chocolate covered potatoe chip clusters. Sweet and a little salty, soooo good. 🤤
I grew up in Vermont, and Ben & Jerry's is part of my childhood. We lived in the next town over, so I would go to the factory so often that the free tours would get boring but I'd do them anyway for the free samples. Back when they only had a few hundred flavors, I knew all of them by heart. I've met the pair a couple times over the years, and they're funny quirky guys, exactly what you'd expect from a company like B&Js; at least before the buyout. Vermont has some great local institutions for great eats. You can drive through the valley and hit up NECI (New England Culinary Institute), KCs Bagels, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (now Keurig), the Ben & Jerry's Factory, Cold Hollow Cider Mill (you gotta try the cider donuts!), and the Cabot Cheese Annex. If you're up in the Burlington area, you've gotta stop by Al's French Frys (yes, that's how it's spelled), Lake Champlain Chocolates, Big Daddy's Pizza, and Burlington Bay Cafe.
I knew a little about Ben & Jerry's before enjoying your video, but I did not know that they knew nothing about making ice cream before entering into that venture. Thanks for another gem.
What DRUGS are in half-baked, that get u high? That's Jerry's shit in Chocolate fudge brownie. Dunked in the toilet where iot belongs. THATS why it has leaves and spiders on it. Take care.
I am from Vermont and remember when Ben and Jerry were scooping Ice Cream in that refashioned gas station. I don't eat any anymore because it is to expensive. Not that many years back they used to provide work and pay for a sheltered workshop. Every Friday they gave the workers a check and a bag of B&J's that were seconds, but, man it was hard to tell by the flavor.
Could you make a video on Wawa. As someone who grew up in the Pennsylvania area, I was never more than a mile away from a Wawa. It is Pennsylvania’s biggest pride.

My college dorm has a convenience store in the basement. We're forced to purchase a meal plan which gives us money to use around campus, and is usually more than necessary. So it was common for me and my roommates to head down, purchase some with what the school called "fake money", and watch a movie with our own container of diabetes.
He mentioned Häagen-Dazs in the video and I just wanted to mention how they got their name because it's a really cool story. You might expect it to involve two guys from northern Europe named Häagen and Dazs like Ben and Jerry but that's not the case. Reuben Mattus was a Polish Jew who emigrated to New York and invented the "Häagen-Dazs" name supposedly as a tribute to Denmark's exemplary treatment of its Jews during the Second World War. Mattus claimed the name was "Danish-sounding," although it is not Danish. Danish has neither an umlaut ä nor the zs letter combination, nor did the name have any meaning in any language before its creation. Mattus felt that Denmark was known for its dairy products and had a positive image in the United States. His daughter reported that her father sat at the kitchen table for hours saying nonsensical words until he came up with a combination he liked. The reason he chose this method was so that the name would be unique and original.
I've actually never eaten Ben & Jerry's. Blue Bell is the national ice cream of Texas, so that's pretty much what I stick too. I'm also a proud survivor of the great Blue Bell famine of 2015. Those were truly tough times.
I thought they were going out of business in 2002 when the discontinued their Pecan Pie Aka Mode ice cream. It was made for the SE region if the country including Texas. I was living in Houston at the time and must have gained 10 pounds eating it. So sad they pulled it. It was so good. I am sure it was too expensive to make.
My only complaint with ben and jerries is that I wish they sold larger containers, I wouldnt even care about the increased price, I just wanna be able to get more than like 3 bowls out of each container
Rep the 802, BJs in PJs is a local tradition. Can down a pint in under 5 min. They also give workers pallets of pints each day. Most take home 3-5 daily and it’s encouraged. Neighbors always had a freezer full. Never had to buy, always was gifted pallets.
Love me some Ben and Jerry's. When I was making Ice Cream for Salt n Straw overrun was a big topic during production due to how it physically affects the overall taste of the ice cream. Salt n Straw also charges $9 per pint. So 2x more expensive than Ben and Jerry...and its worth it.

But once they did and got back on an impressive trajectory, Unilever became interested and eventually purchased the company.
With all these audible codes I literally dont pay for anything! Thanks company man!

My favorite flavors are the late show host ones: Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Dough" first, then Stephen Colbert's "Americone Dream"
Best Ben & Jerry's flavor name: Schweddy Balls. Yes, I purchased it for the name and the name only.
I think its in the grave yard now r.i.p

Ben & Jerry have the best ice cream by far. And you can most definitely be successful in business and keep your core values.
i'm a simple lady, i see company man videos i gently tap that 👍🏼 it's comforting to know they were in the same place in their late 20s as i am before they started their empire 😀 great video as always, mike!
Thanks DoveLady. That's pretty much the message I wanted to convey through the video. Never too late.
I love your channel, I think I might have started watching it like a year ago and eversince it has helped me through my IB business management course and im really thankful that you do these kind of videos. Like 3 or 4 weeks ago we were doing an activity about the decline of Canon, so I remembered your video and used it as my answer, I got an excellent grade :) Keep up the great job
now i want to know what a Cherry Garcia bagel would have tasted like
oh hell yeah
When I traveled New England a few years ago, my friend and I did a tour of the Ben And Jerry museum in VT. I highly recommend. It's only a few dollars and you get free ice cream samples. I have a lot of respect for the brand, but can't eat it anymore, because of a dumb soy allergy.
They just make a damn good product and don't go overboard with BS.
I love Ben and Jerry's ice cream ! American Dream and Chocolate Cookie Dough are my favorites.
...and Drew Carey is no Bob Barker.
@Tiberian Fiend He definitely isn't, but in fairness he's done a pretty good job hosting when you consider that he had such big shoes to fill.

I visited the Ben & Jerry's factory in the 80s. I don't think they were that plentiful in my state at the time and I hadn't heard of them but we were on vacation in Vermont at the time and it was a fun experience. Now I can get them in my local grocery store.
I love Ben & Jerry's, obviously I don't eat it all the time because it is pricey and ice cream isn't particularly healthy but it's a great occasional treat, and I definitely respect the fact that the original owners were so dedicated to their values
And my personal favorite that I've tried is Phish Food
I literally took a tour at the Ben & Jerry's factory in Vermont yesterday on my way back from Burlington and not only do they buy milk from Vermont Farmers but a large percentage of the stock is owned by Vermont residence. on the tour they mentioned some way of Vermont residents have any preferential treatment to buy in the stock around the IPO. It was like 1 in 10 people / families own stocking Ben & Jerry's in VT
Even my local cinema has a Ben & Jerry's stall beside the popcorn, and that's in Ireland
My favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's was Cool Britannia. It had strawberries, chocolate covered shortbread cookies, and sweet cream ice cream. They stopped making it about 20 years ago :(.
Bro, when are you dropping the "Unilever, bigger than you know" video?
He probably doesn't want to make a video that's 4 hours long to explain all the stuff they own.
@@AshLifts97 🤣🤣 good point
Probably an interesting topic, but not sure it's enough of a household name to be "bigger than you know." I imagine most people don't know it at all.
@@n0rmalkid bro you must not know even half the stuff Unilever makes then
@@thegoodtony3339 Yeah you're probably right; tbh the first time I heard of them was from someone complaining about their handling of B&J's. Actually the second was something about lead contamination in their packaged noodles; think the only time I really hear their name is when somebody's protesting something they've done. But I guess my only point was, although I'm sure they own a ton of stuff, they don't really seem to advertise their name that much.
A couple things you missed;
- Another reason for choosing Burlington, VT is that in 1978 it was one of the largest cities in the northeast without a Baskin-Robbins (still doesn't have one but...have they shrunk?)
- In the early '80s Pillsbury owned Haagen-Dazs. They tried to crush Ben&Jerry's by demanding category exclusivity from stores. Thirty years and multiple changes of ownership later, H-D's sales in the Burlington area are at least somewhat better than The Sun's in Liverpool but not quite up to Toyota's in Detroit.
Robbins became a vegan author too. Diet for a New America.
You should do "how did Chick-fil-a get so big?"

@@Nicholas-f5 I'll take them over the ice creamn company that recently got woke, Ben and jerry, or, Biden and Jackass.,Blow and Job
I loveeee how much cookie dough and brownie bits such they pit in their ice cream. the amount of cookie dough in the "tonight dough" is more than a full size tub of 99 percent of other brands.
I've been to their Vermont creamery but I wish their ice cream wasn't so expensive. However it was funny to see the flavor graveyard
Superpremium
Haagendotz(can't spell it correctly) was also expensive
@@obsessedwithotomegames3788 Häagen-Dazs.
@@IJoeAceJRI well they also use good ingredients so they can't afford to do that
@@IJoeAceJRI haagen dazs is their competition. watch the video, mate. come on.
the thing that brought me to liking Ben & Jerry's so much is their variety of dairy-free Ice cream. you'd be surprised at how little dairy-free ice cream can be found outside of major cities. my mom's boyfriend gives me dairy-free Ice cream (made by a different brand) and when we go to the store and we take a look at the Ice cream section, there are only 3-5 options that are dairy-free, and all of those are Ben & Jerry's.
I was hoping you would cover that whole thing about removing the “all natural” on the box
Ben & Jerry's ice cream contains carrageenan, guar gum, natural flavors (i.e. chemicals), soy lecithin, etc. I suspect this wasn't always the case, but seems pretty far from 'all natural.'
I'm born and raised in Vermont, grew up on B&J's
Represent!
Those two guys for some reason remind me of the two soda business owners from that Robin Williams movie RV. But I love B&J's ice cream, the unique flavors are simply enough for me to pay the higher premium
Ben and Jerry are good people. They are examples of what could happen if you follow your dreams.
I'd love to see a video about Motel 6 and Tom Bodett.
Used to be $6 while Super Eight was $8, now just super ghetto franchises.

You should do Jelly Belly
It's like $12 in Australia, SUPER expensive and honestly not that great.
If your ever in Vermont go to the ben and Jerry’s factory and they have soft serve 🍦 for sale it’s delicious

A great video on Ben and Jerry’s. There’s also some sort of a close tie to them and Bernie Sanders when he was mayor of Burlington, VT. :D
Me, opening my half baked right as he mentioned it: 👀
As somebody with a dairy allergy, Ben and Jerry's are actually around the usual price point I pay for anything that won't make me sick. The fact that they actually went and made the ice cream good on top of that... Well I'm a fan.
Eating Ben and Jerry's, and then sees this in my feed. Alright
I read Double Dip and its predecessor The Inside Scoop. Both great reads, and I like their slogan of "if it's not fun, why do it?"
Unilever Bigger Than You Know
They need to bring back The Late Night Snack.
6:47 I love Brownie Batter Core so much, that's my favorite ice cream EVER
I've always been a huge Benn & Jerry's. My fave flavors has always been Phish Food & Americone Dream, but NY superchubk brownie is good too =)
I knew a little about Ben & Jerry's before enjoying your video, but I did not know that they knew nothing about making ice cream before entering into that venture. Thanks for another gem.
Half baked or chocolate fudge brownie are amazing

Growing up I lived less than a mile from two wawas. There are so many in my town. I live in Virginia
Ben & Jerry's: the company that never sold out, even when they literally sold out.
They were forced to sell out
Nothing beats "The Tonight Dough" and "Chocolate Therapy".

Milk & cookies, best flavor
I read their book the real scoop. It was hilarious on how incompetent they were. It's amazing how they kept the company going let alone growing
I can't believe they thought "Ben & Jerry's Reperations NOW!" ice cream would go over well.
Rep the 802, BJs in PJs is a local tradition. Can down a pint in under 5 min. They also give workers pallets of pints each day. Most take home 3-5 daily and it’s encouraged. Neighbors always had a freezer full. Never had to buy, always was gifted pallets.
This got me thinking about a Chick-fil-A video (please)!
I'm from New England, we're SO proud of ben & jerry's. If you're in burlington you basically have to go to the factory. They give you free samples!
My favorite flavor they pulled years ago and I'm still mad about it :'( It was their Totally Nuts flavor.
