A Very Wet Overnight Camp in the Peak District. Wild Camp with East Anglian Bushcraft. Kinder Scout.

  • In this video, I am up in Derbyshire with Craig from East Anglian Bushcraft for a hill top camp up on Kinder Scout - the highest point in the Peak District.
A very wet ascent up Grindsbrook Clough takes up high up on to the Kinder plateau where we are met with misty low cloud and more rain - lots of it.
With poor visibility, we search for a reasonably firm spot to set up our tents and shelter from the worsening weather conditions.
Hot drinks and hot food are the order of the day, warming up in our tents and trying our best to be comfortable for the evening and to get some rest.
Despite the weather, it was great to be up there and spend the night and the morning rewarded us with tantalising glimpses of the sun, which slowly burnt through the clag to give us the views we had hoped for.
In hindsight, I made some poor choices on this little adventure into the high hills - most significantly that I let myself get soaked by the rain on the hike up. I should have put my waterproofs on straight away rather than hoping the rain would pass. The result was a damp and uncomfortable night sleeping in my wet clothes - I also wish I had taken some dry socks. Secondly, I should have taken a warmer sleeping bag - I chose a 2 season bag in favour of keeping weight down, but it cost me in warmth comfort (although, this was probably due more to my wet clothes than anything else) and finally, I wish I’d taken proper coffee for the morning - you’ve got to start the day properly folks!
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching.

A tip for if you're going to do much Peak District camping is to keep your inner tent in a dry bag and just pitch an outer and a ground sheet first. It gives you more room to operate, you can dry out an not worry about getting everything wet. I like to keep my inner as bone dry as possible.

Good call! My inner got pretty wet when I first got in just from the water dripping off me until I took my waterproof off. 👍👍

If you can pack in beer, you can pack in some under thermals.

    Great camp out, Simon.
Waterproof Bottoms or not, I always have a dedicated set of dry “sleep clothes” for such purposes.
I noticed you stayed in your soaked trousers during your food prep scenes. Also, could have put your meal pouch “inside “ your jacket while rehydrating.
    Hyperthermia is no joke.

OMG! If you had gone the very next day, it would have been fair weather, blue skies, and great views. However, I'm so glad to see this video. Just a nice soft day.
I have a lot of great memories of camping in heavy rain and gale-force winds. My tent would be pushed all the way down to the ground and against my face. When the wind would let up, the sucking sound and pop💢 as the tent would come of my skin, would wake me up every time.
My philosophy: You never know how comfortable you are unless you're a little bit uncomfortable.

I learned motorbike camping in the Pyrenees mountains. Rule no1, protect your dry sleeping clothes, dry sleeping bag and dry sleeping mat as the absolute number 1 priority. Keep them in separate dry bags. You can spend all day in wet clothes moving about, but you need that lovely dry warm sleep to recover your strength.

Welcome to my neck of the woods.
I knew you were still going to be damp in the morning. Never a good idea to try and dry out in your sleeping bag on top of a peak. You'd have had a far more comfortable night going Commando in your bag. Every day's a school day!
Also, it seems a shame to be up there with a buddy but hunkered down in seperate tents. Two-person tent next time, maybe?
Having been up and down Kinder more times than I can remember, plus living in Cumbria as a youth, I always pack warmer than the season/conditions suggest. I'd rather have the extra weight in my bag knowing I'm going to be toasty and comfortable.
    Still a good video though.
Hope you're night in the woods was more enjoyable.

Lovely video again Simon and Craig but it was a shame that there was rain .
Thank you for your hard work.

Another lovely video to watch Simon, thank you. Nothing like a wild weather trip to appreciate the simple comforts in life. All the best.

Hilltop camps don’t seem to be your forte this year bud!!! Two season sleeping bags are a definite no no up in this neck of the woods this time of year!!! Schoolboy error 🤣
Looking rather gaunt in the face, hope all is well.

Cold wet weather chills right to the bone and it can be difficult to to get warm. Hypothermia is really miserable, I have been there myself.

Tough, wet, miserable conditions, made enjoyable for us by spending time with you, Simon. The hike down was lovely, beautifully filmed. Hope you don't come down with a cold.
We'll check out Craig's video too 'East Anglian Bushcraft.' Love you Simon, ATB from a West Aussie family. Edit: next fortnight's video should see you at 200K :) so happy for you.

What a coincidence to see this, we done the same this weekend only we stayed in the Woolpacks area of Kinder Scout it's a lot flatter and less boggy, and we had beautiful sunshine (sorry to rub it in 😅) yeah Fjallraven trousers in driving rain are about as waterproof as a flannel, great video as always Simon, hope the next one is dryer for you 😊

You certainly earned those views Simon. A tough call I’d say, stay damp overnight or have to put damp things on in the morning. I think I would have gone for the latter. Assuming you had dry night time things you could have changed in to? Just back from your home turf, Three Rivers again. Jodi send her regards. Thanks for taking us with you. Really love to join you in a canoe camp sometime if you fancy it? Atb. Paul.

It’s good to see you out camping in my home county, and up at my favourite place in Derbyshire for an overnight camp. The Kinder Plateau is vast, you would have to walk a full 26 kilometres to explore all of it up there! And pretty much all of those are above 600 meters too..
It is quite varied terrain visually once you come to know it, so I wouldn’t call it featureless at all, personally.
I highly recommend you have a camp at the ‘Woolpacks’ next time your up this way! 👍🏻
The weather does close in up there fast and is very changeable, and you rarely get to see both a sunset and sunrise during an overnighter, especially this time of year..

Took me back to my first summer camp in Edale. I mentioned on Craig's channel.
First trip up kinder the group got soaked and was drying the vest my mum embarrassingly forced me to wear lol.
Got stuck on a further day out and we were forced to come down a steep hill and my mum never got the marks out my trousers for that!
Only went on it cuz my tutor promised chips! 😂
The other tutor trekked us off singing spam, spam, spam and brown girl in the ring.
Finished it off with girl vs Boyz no rules rugby at camp and we slaughtered the boys 😅
Thanks for triggering memories from 1978!!❤
