I agree, there is absolutely NO WAY Denzel is not getting nominated, he gets nominated for anything he does even if the nobody sees the film, remember he got nominated for that film that no one saw Roman Esq whatever
I went to see the Wicked movie with my dad today. He doesn’t like musicals, he’s really old now and is very special and picky, he gets frustrated and angry very quickly. Still, he was SO MOVED by Cynthia’s performance. It made me cry seeing how much he was enjoying the movie because I think it’s been a long time since I’ve seen him that happy in the movie theater. Afterwards, he said that he liked the movie quite a bit and that it was impressive and has never “seen something so spectacular”. I think we should respect the other great performances of 2024, but Wicked has got to be the frontrunner of almost every award. If it’s not given proper recognition, it will feel so frustrating and sad.
When it comes to Denzel Washington we have to remember he got nominated for Roma Israel Esquire. A fil no one saw and talked abut so I think Denzel is easily getting nominated.
Jesus..no sorry mexican here. I have to chime in in this whole cancel Eugenio Derbez ridiculousness because he said something mean about Selena Gomez. Thats not what it was at all. The two people that participated in that interview said she was a good actress. It was not even about the accent. All that was said is that she didnt speak the language and because of that, because she didnt understand what she was saying the delivery of the lines was all wrong. She couldnt emote properly because she didnt understand the context. The dialogue she spoke made no sense. None of us would ever say those words in a sentence. To people that dont speak the language it just seems like the greatest performance ever. But its not! Thats all that was said and everyone s cancelling the poor guy now.
The first time I saw Yuri Borisov was @ TIFF in the film "Compartment No. 6" which won (shared) the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2021. It was shortlisted but did not get nominated for the Oscars.
Yes please Yura Borisov....I'd love to see Clarence Maclin up there too. I liked A Real Pain but there's just some smugness energy with Kieran Culkin that doesn't work for me...
I tend to agree with Jeff that certain movies are “homework” for people. Screening a movie that is already hyped up is an easier sir than those films that aren’t hyped up. The Brutalist, The Piano Lesson, and even Conclave are not hyped-up films.
FYC might just be the best thing about The Oscars! I do think The Brutalist or Anora will be the big winners, I don't see Emilia Perez or Wicked last long enough, although Ariana is definitely the favorite! Also Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice might be the dark horse. I think The Apprentice as a whole will be the dark horse, but lets see! And Dune Part 2 might be the 'Top Gun Maverick' of this year, which is a shame, because I think its the best movie to come out in years, but maybe that's just me.
I am so stoked for both Ariana and Zoe to the point that I’m simultaneously thrilled at the idea of one winning and preemptively bummed for the other one not.

Before drawing any comparisons to Jennifer Hudson's win for "Dreamgirls"- let's first remember how non-competitive her category was that year.. Hudson was up against three other completely unknown actresses (the two women from 'Babel' whose names I doubt most people remember, and the little girl from "Little Miss Sunshine') and Cate Blanchett, who'd just won the Oscar in the same category only two years before. The character Hudson played is considered the stand out role in the musical and a Leading Role (Jennifer Holiday won the Tony for Leading Actress on Broadway.) While Hudson's Oscar was certainly well-earned, it's also true that no other supporting actress that same year came anywhere close to taking the award from her.
The only thing I see working against an Ariana Grande win is Academy voters might not be willing to give her the Oscar on what is essentially her feature film debut. They might employ the "it's too soon" narrative, and swing votes towards Zoe Saldana, who has a 20+ year career in the industry and major box office clout backing her up.
@@ulicesvilla6995she does make the best with what she’s given and obv is the more skilled actress but I think ep is just awful and brings her performance down particularly in the 2nd half, Ariana just does so much more in her role it’s really an all rounded performance, I think Zoe is gonna eventually take it tho cuz she’s gaining back a lot of momentum with the industry and even critics groups
@@liammorgan2155 Jennifer was also playing one of the most renown female characters in musical theater history. We also know that Jennifer is nothing like Effie. A lot of people have been saying Ariana is good but essentially just playing herself. I do not think that is the case but it's not a stretch to think personality wise the two are quite similar and that Ariana didn't necessarily have to dig deep to find the character. I still think she's delivering a great performance and I still think she might win but I'm just laying out some of the differences.
If The Piano Lesson which is a breezy two hours is homework and The Brutalist isn't, I think that speaks to Jeff's bias. He tends to do this A LOT for Black films
So the actress from Nickel Boys is “such a ridiculous idea” as supporting but Isabella is shoe in? Rossellini has four minutes(?) of dialogue but her mother gets trashed for her win in Orient Express. I understand that you’re saying noms not win.
I'm with Jeff on the homework thing...I've heard Till is AMAZING but I still haven't seen it because I don't wanna feel that sad. If I was voting thought I'd force myself to see it. Same with The Brutalist coming up...I'll probably wait to watch it at home because its such a mammoth movie.
I agree on both counts! Both were absolute standouts for me this year. Except I actually felt Sing Sing was such an ensemble piece that it's hard to really think about lead vs. supporting for that movie, to me. This is where I so wish they gave Oscars for best ensemble. Sing Sing deserves its own ensemble award!!
How often does Perri antidict stuff? Feels like it's been forever since I've heard her this low on a film's Oscar prospects (Glad II still has crafts right?)
Is there any chance of Adam Pearson or Carol Kane sneaking in? Pearson was absolutely brilliant in '"A Different Man." He owned every scene he was in and delivered a solid comic performance. Kane has been around for decades and nailed every bit of comedy and every dramatic subtlety in "Between the Temples." I think both performances deserve so much more attention than they're getting.
while i understand the love for ariana grande here and i can see her getting nominated (because she deserves it) i can’t rationalise her snagging the win because she is not pursuing a career in film (at least not openly) she’s a musician so ultimately what would be the point? she wins the oscar but doesn’t take another film role on? she’s not attached to star in anything and she literally put out an album earlier this year idk i know anything can happen but i don’t see it
What is it about Sept 5 u can’t let it go. Glad Ed Nort is being recognized he is an inch actor he deserves it for his career just like Ralph Fiennes a lot of ‘deserves’ an award this year Chalamet deserves it Isabella deserves it. They all deserve it
I’ll die on this hill, Emilia Perez was made to make cis/white people feel good about themselves for supporting a movie “centered” in a trans character. A lot of it didn’t sit right with me when I saw it and then every trans person I talked about it didn’t think it was good representation (even though Karla Sofia is good in the role), and then apparently mexicans also didn’t like the way the missing people/cartel thing was handled, specially with a script that didn’t feel native (hence the french director and all french screenplay writers)… The film definitely deserves acting and a few tech categories but for me it shouldn’t even be in contention for picture/writing/directing! The only thing that makes the hype make sense is how good people feel supporting it and I hate how exploitive that feels…
My five are Ariana Grande, Zoe Saladana, Danielle Deadwyler, Joan Chen and Anajaue Ellis Taylor. I think Chen is slowly rising since she's been getting more critic's nominations and I think she could sneak into SAG
Im getting in this conversation: Spanish is my first language. Emilia Perez is a difficult film to watch if you are a Spanish speaker because of the different accents and the songs, BUT, Emilia Perez is also getting a lot of unwarranted hate from Spanish speaking people! It is a fantastic and bold film with amazing performances! Selena’s character is NOT a Spanish speaker, she learned to speak spanish when she married Manitas, Zoe’s character specifically says she is Dominican and went to Mexico to study, Karla’s character is Mexican but by the time we see her as Emilia she’s been in Europe for YEARS! The hate is extremely unwarranted and i even will say its coming from people that havent even seen the movie
I agree on everything except the Selena Gomez point, the movie is enjoyable until you get to her scenes, its 25% her fault for not knowing Spanish and 75% the writers/Directors fault for not giving her the time to prepare and for not having a fluent Spanish speaker double checking the dialogue. They used the "she was born in the states" as a crutch but the thing is, even Mexicans born here who speak a maximum of 10% Spanish do not use some of the words they made her say. They wrote her Spanish speaking parts like they got them off google translate it was so off putting.
Yes, some words we never use, but to my point, thats not Selena’s fault, and the fact she delivered them as well as she did is a testament to how good she was
fellow mexican here, it reminds me a lot of the hate roma has received, different reasons tho I vividly remember mexican people, pundits, people from the press calling roma "overrated" and "stereotypical" And let's not even mention the harassment yalitza aparicio received from her own people, with racist and classist remarks she received from the public, press and even some actors I love my country, but i wholeheartedly believe we have the most annoying people Emilia could've done better, but misinformation is clearly feeding that hate it's receiving
His character in A Real Pain is literally nothing like his character in Succession. They are so vastly different that the only similarity is the fact that Kieran Culkin plays them both.
Definitely going to come down to SAG award nominations for sure I think Margaret Qualley deserves a spot for supporting actress but it’s a competitive season this year and I love it. Emilia Perez led the Oscar shortlist mentions this year I wouldn’t be shocked if both ladies got in
For me, the best thing about listening to three passionately different perspectives is that it actually makes me want to watch these movies. Thank you 🎥
I have the same five for Supporting Actress - not convinced of Gomez or Taylor. Qualley might sneak in if The Substance continues its momentum but not yet. I currently have 4 for 5 in Supporting Actor with Clarence Maclin in place of Edward Norton. If A Complete Unknown gets in to Picture, Norton might have a shot (I'm split on the film v Nickel Boys for the 10 slot). Sing Sing seems to be getting in for Picture Actor and Screenplay and Maclin is the best thing in the movie for me.
As a Latino living in Mexico, Emilia Perez is a horrible movie and most, if not all of us, think the same. It’s baffling how you feel so moved by a movie that belittles, and even mocks, a problem so sensitive, made by a frenchman who doesn’t care, who didnt even research the issue or the country at all. All of it feels like a joke. Even setting the issue aside, the musical part of it is cringy and awfully made, I really do not understand any of this. I have been watching you guys and the awards season religiously for a long time. But this Emilia Perez hype will be my breaking point. I don’t know if I will believe in the Academy’s prestige anymore after this.
As a Latino, it is hard to love Emilia Pérez. Emblematic of films for Black actresses like Monster’s Ball, The Help, etc. where these actresses win Oscars but the films themselves are actually harmful.
Perri is right imo - Gladiator II and Saturday Night are the most ridiculously overhyped movies this awards season. Neither one should be anywhere near the awards conversation
I'm not sure why this "latin american backlash" talk is coming from when critics have been pretty consistent and that doesn't really affect most oscar voters which are international not just north american. (it could be this years power of the dog imo)
Every Spanish speaking person knows Emilia Perez is terrible. The script is wack not representative of how real people talk and the music is bullshit. Cero effort put in the lyrics. Some middleschooler just put some words in google translate and that’s how they wrote the songs. A musical with terrible songs should stand nowhere near an Oscar stage. The actresses did good tho.

I love watching Jeff giving his eye rolls and cringe when the others give their opinions
Jeff’s right about Spanish speaking folks not liking Emilia Pérez, Mexican here totally incensed and insulted by that film.
Love this show!
I agree, there is absolutely NO WAY Denzel is not getting nominated, he gets nominated for anything he does even if the nobody sees the film, remember he got nominated for that film that no one saw Roman Esq whatever
It would be a crime to not nominate Danielle Deadwyler for that amazing performance! She is definitely top 5!
Supporting actress is all over the place - and that's when an upset happens - i.e., Jamie Lee Curtis. The dark horse here is Isabella Rossellini.
jamie lee curtis was not an upset lol
@@V0LTUnDeAdyes she was…
@@V0LTUnDeAdat this point of her year I don’t think anybody predicted her
When it comes to Denzel Washington we have to remember he got nominated for Roma Israel Esquire.
Nothing about The Piano Lesson seems like homework…
right? its not even historical like Till 😭
the thing is danielle deadwyler said she doesn't care about oscars, that's why her lack of campaign
Perri coming in strong with the GUNS.
🔥🔥
Grande-Butera, Saldana, Rossellini, Jones and Ellis Taylor. Those are my picks
Conclave is getting BRAT and MEAN GIRLS memes / fancams getting made.
Ppl love this movie. The kiddos love Conclave!

Oh, Jeff went there.
The character Hudson played is considered the stand out role in the musical and a Leading Role (Jennifer Holiday won the Tony for Leading Actress on Broadway.)
While Hudson's Oscar was certainly well-earned, it's also true that no other supporting actress that same year came anywhere close to taking the award from her.
Supporting Actress may be the most competitive category of them all
The only thing I see working against an Ariana Grande win is Academy voters might not be willing to give her the Oscar on what is essentially her feature film debut. They might employ the "it's too soon" narrative, and swing votes towards Zoe Saldana, who has a 20+ year career in the industry and major box office clout backing her up.
I think Zoe legitimately gives a better performance
@@ulicesvilla6995she does make the best with what she’s given and obv is the more skilled actress but I think ep is just awful and brings her performance down particularly in the 2nd half, Ariana just does so much more in her role it’s really an all rounded performance, I think Zoe is gonna eventually take it tho cuz she’s gaining back a lot of momentum with the industry and even critics groups
Jennifer Hudson won and the only thing she really had on her résumé was American Idol.
OR they might simply prefer other performances including Zoe's, as many many of us do!!!
I do it a lot for ANY movie that FEELS like HOMEWORK. Regardless of who makes it.
Not sure where the “Felicity Jones has missed” is true if you say Selena has the precursors when Selena’s only precursor so far is the Globe right?
So the actress from Nickel Boys is “such a ridiculous idea” as supporting but Isabella is shoe in? Rossellini has four minutes(?) of dialogue but her mother gets trashed for her win in Orient Express. I understand that you’re saying noms not win.
I love when FYC gets spicy
Well done Jeff on Felicity
I'm with Jeff on the homework thing...I've heard Till is AMAZING but I still haven't seen it because I don't wanna feel that sad. If I was voting thought I'd force myself to see it. Same with The Brutalist coming up...I'll probably wait to watch it at home because its such a mammoth movie.
I haven't seen A Real Pain yet, and I've no doubt from the trailer that Kieran is great and deserving, but got damn would a Yura Borisov win rule!
as would a Clarence Macklin win as well, man stole the show in Sing Sing
I agree on both counts! Both were absolute standouts for me this year. Except I actually felt Sing Sing was such an ensemble piece that it's hard to really think about lead vs. supporting for that movie, to me. This is where I so wish they gave Oscars for best ensemble. Sing Sing deserves its own ensemble award!!
For true Yura Borisov greatness check out Captain Volkonogov Escaped. It's brutal and beautiful, and Yura is amazing in it.
I’ll add a recommendation for 2021’s Compartment Number 6.
I love jeff
How often does Perri antidict stuff? Feels like it's been forever since I've heard her this low on a film's Oscar prospects (Glad II still has crafts right?)
Is there any chance of Adam Pearson or Carol Kane sneaking in? Pearson was absolutely brilliant in '"A Different Man." He owned every scene he was in and delivered a solid comic performance. Kane has been around for decades and nailed every bit of comedy and every dramatic subtlety in "Between the Temples." I think both performances deserve so much more attention than they're getting.
while i understand the love for ariana grande here and i can see her getting nominated (because she deserves it) i can’t rationalise her snagging the win because she is not pursuing a career in film (at least not openly) she’s a musician so ultimately what would be the point? she wins the oscar but doesn’t take another film role on? she’s not attached to star in anything and she literally put out an album earlier this year idk i know anything can happen but i don’t see it
what's funny is that Ariana recently said she would pursue more acting in the future and do less music.
@ well i missed that entirely then because i had no idea 🤷🏻♂️
My picks for the wins in Supporting are;
Actress - Zoe Saldana
Actor - Guy Pearce
Hannuakah sameach for the FYC crew from the city of TLV
Hated Emilia Perez….
Fantastic Picks for Best Actress I hope Demi Moore wins
My five are Ariana Grande, Zoe Saladana, Danielle Deadwyler, Joan Chen and Anajaue Ellis Taylor. I think Chen is slowly rising since she's been getting more critic's nominations and I think she could sneak into SAG
I hope Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor will be nominated for her brilliant performance in "Nickel Boys".
Ariana is my #1 too. It's a tight race
I think theres very little chance Felicity Jones gets snubbed
There is no way that the Academy nominates two pop stars in supporting actress AND gives one of them an Oscar. Selena is getting snubbed.
Get ready to be yes way’d lol
Wholeheartedly agree! It's baffling how "cinefiles" bash such an original and unique cinematic achievement. Shameful indeed...
Yes, some words we never use, but to my point, thats not Selena’s fault, and the fact she delivered them as well as she did is a testament to how good she was
Very much agree. And it's also pretty pesado (if you know Spanish) to always criticize people for their accents. I mean, give it a rest with that.
fellow mexican here, it reminds me a lot of the hate roma has received, different reasons tho
I vividly remember mexican people, pundits, people from the press calling roma "overrated" and "stereotypical"
And let's not even mention the harassment yalitza aparicio received from her own people, with racist and classist remarks she received from the public, press and even some actors
I love my country, but i wholeheartedly believe we have the most annoying people
Emilia could've done better, but misinformation is clearly feeding that hate it's receiving
Perri loves Kieran Culkin for playing... Kieran Culkin. After all he is exactly the same, or almost exactly the same, in Succession.
His character in A Real Pain is literally nothing like his character in Succession. They are so vastly different that the only similarity is the fact that Kieran Culkin plays them both.
I can’t wait to watch The Piano Lesson
If the academy nominate Selena Gomez I think the Latin American people will riot
Thank you 🎥
I’ll be crushed if Jeremy Strong doesn’t get nominated for The Apprentice.
No film is harmful. Stop being super sensitive
Perri is right imo - Gladiator II and Saturday Night are the most ridiculously overhyped movies this awards season. Neither one should be anywhere near the awards conversation
Was this taped before the Oscar short lists came out. Emilia Perez over performing- not fading away at all.
I don’t think they pay attention that much to stuff like that.
Plus they even said it’ll prolly be the MOST nominated with the least amount of wins.
I'm not sure why this "latin american backlash" talk is coming from when critics have been pretty consistent and that doesn't really affect most oscar voters which are international not just north american. (it could be this years power of the dog imo)
i think margaret will replace danielle deadwyler
Feel it’s Ariana against Zoe Saldana
Don’t be dismissive of Isabella Rossellini in “Conclave”. She can pull off a win especially with European voters.
Let's go Zoe and selena
When Jeff said his #1 pick for Supporting Actor, I swear his sexiness shot up by 10 times. That was such an inspired pick :D
"the guy from CODA" 😭
I'm rooting for Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce. I guess we'll see how the Sag noms and Bafta noms change the course of the noms.
Zoe, Pearce for supporting
Brody, Kidman for main
Oh do we have a bet with Yura Borisov.
I think Margaret Qualley will get a surprise nomination for Best Supporting Actress
Best Oscars Show Around!
These guys are nuts 😂 Denzel Washington is not getting a nom for Gladiator II.
Divine-eye didn’t pay acting dues? Years doing productions while in prison that led to his and others transformed lives counts as dues.
