This song is in tons of movies and shows, and I feel like it's always misused because no one bothers to see what it's about, like they think it sounds awesome (because it does) so they throw it in some Action scene and I'm just like "songs about him mourning his girlfriend/possibly wife and being depressed and just wanting everything Black, doesn't fit what's happening on screen at all" but whatever. You really need to hear Gimme Shelter and Sympathy for the Devil.

Apparently the song is also associated with the war in Vietnam, this could be attributed to it's use in the credits of Kubrick's 1987 classic Full Metal Jacket, and the tv series Tour of Duty which aired from 1987-1990, perhaps as a result of the lyrics, public sentiment about the war had already soured by 1966 due to the seemingly endless conflict, by the start of the next decade much of the population believed that going to war in Vietnam had been a mistake on the part of the US government, due to the sheer magnitude of lives consumed and discarded by the war effort, death was an ever present thought in the minds of not just civilians but of the soldiers. From the first verse of the song, which opens at a funeral we are confronted with the concept of death, and the grief that follows in it's wake, these days most people wouldn't see funerals as a daily occurrence, but in a song like 'Paint It Black,' death is as much a part of life as new life, as Jagger sings "It just happens everyday," from the first line we're captivated as our storyteller talks of seeing a hearse and the other cars in the procession, carrying flowers and the love of the narrator's life to the graveyard, as burial swiftly approaches, now if we are to tie it to the conflict that had been occurring at the time we must first ask, who is telling the story? Since on the surface Paint it Black is the struggle against depression by a man who's just lost his girlfriend, as the song tells us he wants the whole world to be painted in darkness, hence 'Paint it Black,' this desire peaks in the outro with the narrator going into a speil about how he wants the 'Sun blotted out of the sky," like the darkness of an apocalypse of a biblical origin, this isn't just your average person's grief, this transcends it, whilst the speaker could be a just a civilian teen trying to get over the loss of his love, in a literal sense, there is obviously a way to interpret more into it, the speaker could be a young soldier wounded in battle, having returned home after fighting in the war having seen people dying all around him his whole time overseas, someone who'd just witnessed that much death and destruction isn't going to take yet another loss and be able to continue teetering over the edge of a deep-, dark, pit or abyss, the way it's presented in the song the hearse is literally taking the body of his lover to it's final resting place, but symbolically it represents his ability to feel anything, to love and be loved away from him altogether. Love is associated with the heart, and in that context that represents a part of the soul, (something I've never truly believed in,) with the loss of a part of your soul you become less human, you lose touch of what is real, much like a soldier suffering through PTSD, a common mental disorder suffered by survivors of the conflict, war vets becoming psychologically damaged by their experiences sometimes past the point of recovery if they made it back home from the war, a young war vet would no longer find enjoyment in even the smallest of things that used to bring him joy back home, like seeing women his age dressed in their summer clothes, having just recently lost his lover he turns away, overwhelmed by the 'darkness,' instead of talking to them for any reason be it simply to have someone to talk to, or someone to flirt with, the speaker goes out of his way to not talk to people about his problems, but even if he did as a veteran he wouldn't be welcomed with a smile by most people in this period of time, because the public chose to spit on, yell at, and alienate soldiers, treating them with the utmost disdain for a war that they weren't responsible for, the speaker also talks about this in the song mentioning how people would coldly turn and look away from him, instead of acknowledge his existence, adding to the growing feelings of isolation as he retreats into his mind, paranoia taking the place of trust, Jagger once talked about how drugs were a part of understanding the meaning of Paint It Black. Like many veterans returning home after their time in the war the speaker sought to conquer the darkness in his heart, with no one to talk to, he turned to drugs to ease the pain and find even the most shallow sense of love or happiness, the discontent of people at the time drove many to escape it with the use of psychedelic drugs. Now, the war in Vietnam wasn't the only source of political upheaval at the time, for example the Civil Rights movement was also in the public eye, now for some Americans these two sources of upheaval were connected in the middle, in fact on the earliest printing of the single "Paint It Black," it was transcribed as "Paint it, Black," which reads as a racially charged message to a whole group of Americans, this mistake was later rectified in subsequent printings but the error had already added a new meaning to a song rife with social and political meaning.

Bro, legend has it that The Beatles helped bring forth the metal genre with their song Helter Skelter back in 1968. React to that song please!
Edit: Also react to Gimme Shelter from The Rolling Stones. The female backup singer had a miscarriage the day after she recorded the song. Rumour has it that it was due to her overexertion in the studio.

4:27 There's a wrong lyric there. It's not "I want to see the sun, flying high in the sky" It's "I want to see the sun, blotted out from the sky."
As in; see the sun darken. See the sun taken out of the sky.

The Beatles were great at 'dark' too. I guess you just haven't heard enough of their stuff. Though I agree that, overall, they were more upbeat than the Stones.

I used to think I was a huge Rolling Stones fan but I recently listened to all their albums in order and I discovered I'm a huge fan of the commercial Rolling Stones. I love all their singles and all those songs you know but listening to everything I found out they are really a jam band. Most of their songs don't much structure and go off in weird tangents. I also found out that one of my favorites songs, Honky Tonk Woman, is not even on an album. It was released as a single only. There is a song called Country Honk that is similar but not the same. Favorite Stones song by far is Sympathy For the Devil. You should give that a listen I think you'll really like it.
