The song about a funeral. About turning his head when he sees girls in summer clothes, he's depressed he's mourning the death of a loved one. He doesn't want to see anybody having fun or Joy while he's mourning the death of someone he loves.
When I first heard this song years ago, I totally got that right off the bat, it's that same feeling of when you're alone and you just can't look at a happy couple in love it makes you sick feeling. Seeing the girls dressed all pretty having fun, when you're depressed and lonely lamenting someone, you'd just get sick to your stomach.
I always interpreted that line as that he's so depressed that he doesn't even care about pretty girls, so he turné His head or maybe he just can't anyone pretty and happy deep in his darkness.
I look at it as, his hart is black because he is a sick in the head man. Wants to paint the red door black because red door could be the sign of a prostitute house and wants to project his disdain on it, and turn his head from the girls because it just fuels the fire in side.
“If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes.” He’s saying if he thinks about it too deeply at sunset, he will kill himself and laugh with his dead loved one by morning. Really the darkest and deepest line in the song and no one ever gets it.
The song is about grief and him losing a loved one to death " I see a line of cars and there all painted black" (a funeral procession) "both flowers and my love never to come back" and the girls in summer clothes turning his head till darkness goes, the darkness is grief and the girls remind him of his love he lost having to turn his head because the memory/grief is to painful
Exactly what I got from this song, the guy lossed his loved one, he's in no mood for anything happy hence: "I see girls dress in their summer cloths and I have to turn my head", he's grieving, he is in no mood to see happy or joy right now, his world is black. This song seems so easy to understand, but then, I've heard it many many times.
@@Moonshinedave1 I think you got it right. The dead girlfriend is just the catalyst for the depression. He's seeing happy shiny colors and he is far away from the feeling that it actually intensifies his depression.

This song and the Animals "I Got To Get Out Of This Place" were the the 2 songs adopted by the troop deployed to Vietnam during the war. They tended to exemplify the emotional mindset of those of us fighting in that conflict.
The Stones were rockers in the early 60's and this tune is late 60s, when U.S. rock was really changing. Hippies were everywhere! The Stones were very bluesy and even put out country music. They wrote almost all of their own material. Their sound changed constantly, but never got old.

the lyrics person, for who knows what reason put "i want to see the sun flying high in the sky"!? lol... it is actually "i want to see the sun BLOTTED OUT form the sky." this is an analogy about how depression is like trying to live a nice summer day watching the pretty girls walking by, but all you focus on are the funeral procession and your loss. :( thank you both again!!
another jokes from the lyrics person "I wanna see your face..painted black..black as night..black as coal"...thats a little bit disturbing and unappropriate for me.. i know the right lyrics should be "I wanna see it painted...painted black..black as night..black as coal"
He sees the girls "in their summer clothes" an he "has to look away" because he's not ready to look at happiness again (especially the context of pretty women).
He is also describing the obvious discomfort of other people when they see a person who is grieving . Most people are uncomfortable seeing a window. CS lewis wrote about this very thing after he lost his wife. The guy doesn't want to see happiness and other people don't want to be reminded about death.
The Rolling Stones - like the Beatles - recorded literally hundreds of songs in many different styles and genres . They have been performing since 1962 which is a remarkable 59 year career .
The "belly dancing" sound is likely due to the use of the sitar, a south Asian instrument introed to the Stones by the Beatles' George. I agree with a few commenters that reactors would be best off listening to a song for (at least!) more than one minute before interrupting the tune to speculate on the song's meaning(s)... That said, I enjoy the couple dynamic, and especially Lex's ability to get into the vibe of most songs, almost from the get-go!
Great way to honour him by checking out this great song! The song sounds like it's about a lover who's died but I think in interviews the band said it was more about depression in general and how it removes all the colour from the world. Hope you check out some more music by twenty one pilots
The "belly dancer" sound you hear is a sitar, a guitar like instrument from India. A lot of bands during the 60s experimented with it in their music. Primarily because many of the "hippie" types of the time were dabbling in Eastern (Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern) self-enlightenment philosophies and religions and were thus exposed to the music of the region as well, which lead to some bands incorporating new (to the West) instruments and rhythms into their music. This song is probably one of the best examples of where it worked really well.
Many decades after this song was released, it became the theme song for the tv show "Tour of Duty" which was about the Vietnam War. Commenters below have made a good case that this song was about a funeral, but I had always considered it to relate to depression or, as Brad said, mental health. Fits pretty well there.
The lyrics of this song are so deep and prophetic that my Mensa Club English teacher in high school considered it the be the best piece of contemporary poetry in his life to that point. Thats saying a lot if you only knew how Smart Brother De Paul Wright was.
Definitely, unquestionably Rock; The Stones are up there with Led Zep and Floyd as some of the all-time legends of the genre. Do yourself a favor and check out "Gimme Shelter" and "Sympathy for the Devil," if nothing else by them.
Rock musicians get their inspiration from all types of music , mostly blues and jazz .They also in past were not limited to these influences classical , folk and world music. This song is heavily influenced by the sitar , The musicians seemed to have become aware of it and world music and experimented with it at the time when they were more free to create . Lex I heard you mention classical music in other videos, you should check out YES ( Roundabout ) or Genesis . Progressive rock where Rock is heavily influence by classical music .
I was 6 when this was my first single that was given to me in 1971 (originally from 1966). It locked me into listening to the full force of music. Although, I got sent home from kindergarten for singing this song. Never stopped me from searching for great music. Enjoy!
Just a suggestion: Enjoy the music and don't try to figure out the meaning of the lyrics. It's usually about something super specific and you'll never figure them out. Look up the meaning before or after listening to the song. I've been listening to these songs regularly for 30 years. I still have no clue what half these songs mean.
Agreed! If I was moved by a song and enjoyed it I never worried about what it was about. Some I knew, others I didn't. Same with song names. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and I never knew the names of most of their songs, until UA-cam and streaming came along. I used to play side A, then turn it over and play side B. Quality bands put out quality albums, not a hit song or two per album.
@@LLMAXG Gotta say, guys, I agree with Max. If they just let the song play without commenting on it, they'd get copyrighted. And we might as well just go listen to the song ourselves! Sure, the overanalysing sometimes takes them in a way-off direction, but if it leads to interesting conversations and keeps us entertained, that's the point of the channel. It's great how the comments and livestreams provide more context and facts and corrections, though. We're all getting a music and history education here, yo.
Two real ‘moments’ lyrically in this song, the first, as so many have mentioned is his woman’s funeral. The second is him contemplating suicide to be with her ‘If I look hard enough into the setting’ sun, My love will laugh with me before the morning comes.’ Most people miss that part - it’s deep grief. One of your commenters thought it was about being dumped - so even at first listen you are way ahead of that guy! Some songs have specific meanings, some don’t, some artists share the meanings some prefer not to.
To me I always imagined this song was about a solider coming back from war (like Vietnam or Korea) and being haunted by what he had seen and perhaps done. Red reminded him of the blood and fire, seeing the girls in summer clothes, the things some people did they weren't proud of and how the memory of this and all the friends lost (funeral procession of black cars) had ruined his ability to enjoy life. The drug addiction and PTSD making it impossible to fit back into society and people turning their heads when they see him and quickly looking away?? Just my read on it anyways. Stumbled across you guys just recently...LOVE your videos! Lex love your intuition and empathy when you listen to music and no disrespect intended but my goodness you are absolutely stunningly beautiful!!! :) Its so much fun watching you guys bounce off each other! Keep up the great work!
Brad, you're usually so good at interpreting lyrics. How could you miss the part where he describes his dead girlfriend passing by in a funeral procession? lol
2 lines explain it all. The funeral procession (black cars. Tricky wording but the cars are the only items already painted black.) And then deep in the song "I did not foresee this happening to you". We older folks have had decades to unpack this song. It's literally written from the viewpoint of someone expressing how they're feeling right after or even on the day of their love's funeral.

This song, for me, imparts a sense of utter despair, a desperate "depression", so deep that you can't help but want the entire world, and everyone in it, to experience that same feeling, no matter the cost.
A great artist can make you feel what they are feeling. That's how I judge art. If they can make me laugh or tear up, they are great and make my life richer.
A lot of song writers will write a song specific to themselves or specific experience but a lot of their personal experiences and feelings expressed in the song are universal and felt by many...the listening audience.
The viewer from your stream was right, At least as far as I've always interpreted it. The higher pitched guitar sound you hear Lex, is an Indian sitar. Basically an old guitar from India. Alot of bands from this era were looking for different sounds, and were trying different instruments. Great job guys!
It's about grief and how it hurts to see the world so happy and colorful when everything has gone black for you- you want everyone to feel it and to stop being so cherry and bright.
The Rolling Stones have been making music as a band for 59 years!! There's alotta GREAT CLASSIC songs to get thru!! This is early Stones!! So much music to blow your mind!!!
I swear, I could watch Lex stand alone just moving to the music. I love how she reacts to every note. I'm much more like Brad though. I love music, but I'm just very reserved by nature. This song is about mourning.
It was a pretty normal sound for rock in the 60s. The Beatles, Iron Butterfly, and many other groups also incorporated India-inspired sounds. It was a thing at the time.
A staple of classic rock. The sitar is giving it a middle eastern sound. If you want to hear more of the band's rock style listen to "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" or Brown Sugar.
fun fact: The lyric video has a line near the end completely wrong. The line "I don't want to see the sun shining high in the sky" is actually much more grim. The correct lyric is "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky"
I'm an old guy and I always catch crap for not liking The Rolling Stones (I'm more of a Slipknot kind of guy) THIS is the one Stones song I like :) Also you two are awesome, love watching your reactions, keep up the fun
This was a pretty sad song when you think about it. His love dies while everyone turns away and him not knowing if he could even look at anyone or himself. Thinking dark thoughts is what this brings to me and he wants the whole world to feel his pain while grieving for his love and funeral related things. This is rock in its infancy and i love this song so much. Heard it playing Twisted Metal Black on Playstation and has stuck with me for years

This song is much more simple than it seems on the surface. He's just been dumped, he's bummed out ... he is in the mourning period for his lost love. He wants to wallow in his sadness.
The Rolling Stones is a very prominent reason for my self pride in being British. Also the Beatles. This is one of my favourite stones songs. Great reaction as always guys😎
It's classic rock. Heavy for its day and the songs still hold up, they just aren't heavy by today's standards and aren't metal, so they sound different.
Whaaat?... This is absolutely rock music. hahaha Lex must be thinking "hard rock" (ACDC) as "rock" (Rolling Stones). This is not a "one off kind of thing", this is just rock!
The line of cars all painted black is a funeral procession. The hearse carrying the flowers and his love (girlfriend).
That's right, he lost a girlfriend back in the 60's, who was she
Both never to come back
Also some of the lyrics at the end were not correct to the song..

To me, The Rolling Stones are the epitome of rock. Like rock music in its purest, most distilled form. Straight up rock n roll.
the lyrics person, for who knows what reason put "i want to see the sun flying high in the sky"!? lol...
it is actually "i want to see the sun BLOTTED OUT form the sky."
this is an analogy about how depression is like trying to live a nice summer day watching the pretty girls walking by, but all you focus on are the funeral procession and your loss. :(
thank you both again!!
Actually, the lyricist put, "Don't want to see the sun flying high in the sky," which is exactly what it sounds like he is singing to me.
@@zoegartham312 i don't hear it... lol, oh well! i guess i will continue to hear it the way i've heard since childhood.
another jokes from the lyrics person "I wanna see your face..painted black..black as night..black as coal"...thats a little bit disturbing and unappropriate for me..
i know the right lyrics should be "I wanna see it painted...painted black..black as night..black as coal"
The lyrics say there's a line of black cars with flowers and his girl that will never come back. Did y'all miss that line? LOL
I am a Vietnam Vet and this song was the most popular to almost all combat vets for what ever reason but it was
He sees the girls "in their summer clothes" an he "has to look away" because he's not ready to look at happiness again (especially the context of pretty women).
They have been performing since 1962 which is a remarkable 59 year career .
very few drummers had pockets as deep as Charlie Watts. RIP
Right? I tried to mug him in an alley once, but he ended up mugging Me. Imagine the irony!!!
The rolling stones have a massive pallet of styles, something for everyone!
Many decades after this song was released, it became the theme song for the tv show "Tour of Duty" which was about the Vietnam War. Commenters below have made a good case that this song was about a funeral, but I had always considered it to relate to depression or, as Brad said, mental health. Fits pretty well there.
To me, one of their best tracks. I love the Rolling Stones.
This song is definitely about loss and grief. This is such a GREAT song. Glad you both discovered this song!
The lyrics of this song are so deep and prophetic that my Mensa Club English teacher in high school considered it the be the best piece of contemporary poetry in his life to that point. Thats saying a lot if you only knew how Smart Brother De Paul Wright was.
Yes, it is about a funeral. It is also one of the songs that defined the Vietnam war. It is definitely rock´n roll.
my favorite Stones tune it's so melancholy and emotionally true.
Can’t believe they never heard of the Stones! Still touring today! RIP Charlie Watts.
This is great that you are showing respect for a great musician
My favorite rolling stones song, also because its in Full Metal Jacket. I love that movie.
Definitely, unquestionably Rock; The Stones are up there with Led Zep and Floyd as some of the all-time legends of the genre. Do yourself a favor and check out "Gimme Shelter" and "Sympathy for the Devil," if nothing else by them.
It's about a Vietnam vet coming back home and dealing with the changes in society and his own self. My uncle went through this. RIP Uncle Donald.
Rock is so vast and diverse but this definitely is rock, specifically from the 60's era.
Enjoy!
Rip Charlie Watts :(
I just feel this song's about me. Like I have a childhood trauma and depression which doesn't let me enjoy my life just like the song says
Preach, I agree. I love these 2, but sometimes I wsih they'd listen to the entire track, or at least half, then maybe they'll get it.
Agree 100%
Your first time watching a reaction channel? 🤦🏽♂️
This song gives me gypsy / folk vibes. It's such a mystical track masterpiece.
Question: Do artists write songs to be interpreted or not? Answer: Yes, No and Maybe. Depends on the artist.
I am the Walrus by the Beatles was made because a school was having the children interpret their lyrics.
Imagine listening to the Stones for the first time and it's this track. Has been and always will be on my top ten of all time.
Every time I hear these songs from this time I immediately remember US soldiers in FOB's listening to this.
How does this not sound like rock? Maybe not hard rock, but def rock!
How could you miss the part where he describes his dead girlfriend passing by in a funeral procession? lol
No, no, it is about a pervert.
LOL?
Yeah, it's strange how most reaction ot this song miss that entirely. It seems so obvious but hardly anyone ever sees it.
@@Muckylittleme its not
The "girls in summer clothes" got his attention more than the guy in the song. haha
Oh here is another badass track! good one... RIP Charlie.
Maybe Brad is projecting his own thoughts of girls in summer clothes.
2 lines explain it all. The funeral procession (black cars. Tricky wording but the cars are the only items already painted black.)
And then deep in the song "I did not foresee this happening to you". We older folks have had decades to unpack this song. It's literally written from the viewpoint of someone expressing how they're feeling right after or even on the day of their love's funeral.
Hello! Thank you for the video! Please pay attention to the young singer Diana Ankudinova.Make reactions to the songs of Wicked game, Human🌞🌞🌞DIANA ANKUDINOVA is a talented young singer. I would like to know your opinion. I think you will be surprised. Diana has a very unusual voice and artistic presentation for her age.🌹🌹🌹 Thanks in advance
Diana Ankudinova 😊👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥🎉💫💯
Я бы посмотрел реакцию на Диану Анкудинову 👍👍
Diana this is the best thing I've ever heard in my life 🤯 😍
Diana Ankudinova is an amazing singer, her voice fascinates!
Grief and depression over the death of his love.
The black cars are during funerals for all the soldiers dying in the Vietnam War. It's a song about grief and loss.
It's not about the vietnam war, even though just about every war movie uses it in their soundtrack. A loved one of his has died and he is depressed.
This song, for me, imparts a sense of utter despair, a desperate "depression", so deep that you can't help but want the entire world, and everyone in it, to experience that same feeling, no matter the cost.
Fair winds and calm seas Charlie. Thank you for all the great music.
One of my all time favorite song. Awesome you guys did a reaction to it 🤙🤙😁
It was a pretty normal sound for rock in the 60s.
Great, fantastic and immortal Rolling Stones with the brilliant founder and leader Brian Jones!!!
really cool that you acknowledged Charlie Watts passing
Happiness makes him sad, he lost his love. Brian Jones Played the Sitar for the eastern sound.
i actually knew this song first as the opening for a show called 'Tour of Duty". it was the shit when i was 12;D
Mick lost his girlfriend he's depressed and angry.same way I felt when I lost my wife of 34 years
You guys have a lot of videos. I'm working my way through them all. LOL Love it.
"Sympathy for the Devil" - you need this
I'm an old guy and I always catch crap for not liking The Rolling Stones (I'm more of a Slipknot kind of guy) THIS is the one Stones song I like :)
Also you two are awesome, love watching your reactions, keep up the fun
You guys were totally right, that songs about anger and depression.
The song is about loss, depression and being in a dark place after you lose someone.
Heard it playing Twisted Metal Black on Playstation and has stuck with me for years
'belly dance rock', that's a whole new genre you come up with there Brad 💃😁
👍👏👏👏
My all time favorite band these dude are bad ass!! Check out Sympathy for the Devil, Mothers Little Helper, Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses, Shine a Light, Miss You, Monkey Man, Sister Morphine, Rock and a Hard Place, Harlem Shuffle WAYYYYYY too many good songs!! RIP Charlie you legend you’ll truly be missed!! 😢💯🤘🏽
Lex's "rocking out" smile is like the shining sun.
It's classic rock. Heavy for its day and the songs still hold up, they just aren't heavy by today's standards and aren't metal, so they sound different.
Whaaat?...
This is absolutely rock music. hahaha
Lex must be thinking "hard rock" (ACDC) as "rock" (Rolling Stones).
This is not a "one off kind of thing", this is just rock!
Artists create art for the creating. An audience is just a bonus.
