Prime Sting writing… beautifully realized live. Really special - what musicianship! Soul Cages is a wonderful album - I hope many generations get to enjoy it in future. Much better than the police, in my opinion. Much more genuine and authentic - really a stunning album.
It all starts at 1:16 for anyone who wants to skip the band intro. I keep coming back to hear it because it's so good, so it's just nicer for some who just want to hear the tune. Great upload. Thank you ♥
Such a special live version ~ love the vibes & backing vocals. Everyone is completely engaged & loving it. The drummer is key because he drives it along, adding subtle fills that never eclipse anything. The Last Bandoleros create a heavenly background. Thank you for this special upload ♥
One of my favourite song !!..Great live version! Congratulations to the one and only Mr STING but also to Mr Josh Freeze who did a very good job on this song!😘
This song has such special meaning for me. Years ago, while crossing the Oakland Bay Bridge with my daughter and her mother we sang along to this "river flowing endlessly to the sea" from a fog shrouded city where the seagulls play, not once, but twice as it played on the local radio station. It generated so much positive energy as its mandolin powered propulsive beat gave us so much joy.
Peter Slansky this song is about Sting's home town, Wallsend (named because it's at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, which was the northern most point of the Roman Empire) - sting was writing about his father's dying days. The church he mentions can be seen across the river Tyne, it's in a town called Hebburn (the river is only half a mile wide)
Ah, the “Toon” tune, so upbeat and with flicks of the page of history bringing Sting’s love of his homeland through his evocative lyrics. Similarly, weaving the thread of folk music into a really rockin’ rhythm a la Paul Simon; he started something special there, and Mr Sumner knows how to create the same, great magic 🎵, magic 🎶,magic 🎵.
Priceless our friend sting! Always turning fog' into glory clouds* is it any wonder his heart stays in all even where know shadows dwell' friend honored forever ageless matters you are psalm 139 David
The 1st time I saw Sting was with his two pals Stewart and Andy, at the Police Picnic in Toronto in 1982, 3+ decades later, STING still has a Voice like no other.
This reminds me of my challenges in life. Caught my ex wife cheating on me after 12 years of marriage. My boys and I walked in on her. Life is much better. It’s been 5 years and I am debt free and have rebuilt my empire and my boys are happy.
Three is the Magic Number Cali Family these lines suit her well. They lived and they died. They prayed to their gods, but the stone gods did not make a sound. And their empire crumbles 'till all that was left Were the stones the workmen found.
I looked out across the river today. Saw a city in the fog and an old church town where the seagulls play. Saw the sad shire horses walking home in the sodium light, Two priests on the ferry. October geese on a cold winter's night. All this time the river flowed endlessly to the sea. Two priests came 'round our house tonight, One young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying to serve the final rite. One to learn, one to teach which way the cold wind blows. And fussing and flapping in priestly black like a murder of crows. All this time the river flowed endlessly to the sea. If I had my way, take a boat from the river and I'd bury the old man. I'd bury him at sea. Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth. Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of the needle. As these words were spoken I swear I hear the old man laughing. What good is a used up world and how could it be worth having? All this time the river flowed endlessly like a silent tear. All this time the river flowed. Father, if Jesus exists then how come he never lives here? Yeah yeah. Yeah yeah. Yeah yeah. Teachers told the Romans built this place. They built a wall and a temple and an edge of the empire garrison town. They lived and they died. They prayed to their gods, but the stone gods did not make a sound. And their empire crumbles 'till all that was left Were the stones the workmen found. All this time the river flowed in the falling light of a Northern sun. If I had my way, take a boat from the river. Men go crazy in the congregations, they only get better one by one. One by one. One by one by one. One by one. (I looked out across) Sad shire horses walking home in the sodium light. (the river today)
I'm not sure if you're still asking or figured it out after listening to this version, but it's a play on the quote from the bible "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". So Sting's dad is saying he'd rather be poor and get to heaven than a fat rich man stuck in the eye of a needle. Edit: I guess it's actually the priests saying the bible quote. Sting imagines his dad scoffing at them. Who wants to be poor if all you get as a reward is a used-up world?

Fantastic. Such a tight band!
Song so good it doesn't need a strong riff or lick, it's just telling a story and the chorus is sublime.

@@seanie002 So Sting is from Eastwatch By The Sea eh?
@@trottheblackdog I'm 3 years late but Newcastle (The City containing Wallsend) is the direct basis for Eastwatch by the Sea
"mandolin powered" 😄👍

wWho is the star here ? Sting or Josh Freese ? :D
#1 Bravo
Men go crazy in congregations / They only get better one by one -- Amen.
Buena version de este clasico...
Oh … Josh Freese … vivid!
JF is a beast on skins
Josh freeze on drums?
Yeah
Sting is simply amazing! Always wondered what a “fat man in the eye of a needle” meant?
I'm not sure if you're still asking or figured it out after listening to this version, but it's a play on the quote from the bible "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". It's from the bible a rich man entering heaven

Come to Newcastle and I'll show the exact location he sings about
What drums is he playing?
71 years old and you don't expect his voice to have dropped?
70 years since the 2. of Octobre 2021, if you want to be precise. But you are right, of course the voice changes and mellows with the years.
Boy his voice has really dropped in register on this song.
yeah he sounds sick
@@Laneta41 he can sing it down one octave. Also there is nothing wrong with what i said

@@Laneta41 I couldn't agree more and thank you Yayo for pointing this out.
@@Laneta41 not everyone
It's too bad he took this song so tongue-in-cheek at the beginning of this performance, because it really is a quintessential Sting song
Josh freeze plays with multiple bands mostly for concerts.
What was a garrison town?
scwag.com an army barracks was there
Sting is from Newcastle upon Tyne...Northern England and historically the Romans built Hadrians Wall in 122 A.D. he is obviously singing about his home town the Tyne River ( a tidal river that flows into the sea...and Hadrians Wall...I've been there, it's awesome..!!
Ripped from a Wiki. Well done. Yes, Sting loves lyrics that relate to his upbringing.
No Keyboards? Though the guitar work is fucking awesome.
Where's Vinnie on drums?
Vinnie hasn’t toured with him in years
A great song! King of Pain chords a bit.. But cool!
Sounds like The Police
i love this song but yeah Jesus exists in my eyes,
The solo stuff Sting wrote all those years ago seem to be better suited to the voice he now has. Funny how that worked out.
The arrangement sounds like it’s going back to the studio version…
