VOLBEAT DRUM CAM with JON DETTE (SLAYER, ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT) on Drums

- Drum Cam footage performing with the mighty VOLBEAT, filling in for Jon Larsen.
NOTE: I have NOT left TAMA or ZILDJIAN. This was an extremely unique and last minute situation. Since I was only performing 3 shows, the best decision was to perform on Jon Larsens drums. I worked with Pete (Jon's tech) to scale the kit down to just two rack toms and two floor toms to make it easier for him as he had to set the kit up left handed, or as I like to say...the correct way! lol.
Jon's drums are miked internally. Changing to TAMA last minute would've required different mics and more adjusting sound for the FOH (Dennie) which there was no time for. Changing Cymbals would've also changed the sound.
So, that's why you see me on Jon's drums (set up correctly. haha) performing on Pearl and Paiste. Thank you Zildjian and Tama for your blessings and understanding.
Big THANK YOU to Pete Abdou for the video and taking care of me! I was in GREAT hands!!
Enjoy!
Damn!! Learning 16 songs in 24 hours is like the monks that would memorize books back in ancient times. I guess we know what Mr. Dette would be if he was around back then. You slayed it!!!
Wow!!!!!.... Drummers don't read sheet music, they see it in their head with their eyes closed... And let the hands and feet do what comes naturally......percussionism is a talent.....you can only learn so much... It's a gift...
This guy's a stud. He fills in for bands a LOT. He rocks.
I love how Jon always plays with such authority. Not implying he just beats the hell out of the drums, it's more than that. Anybody can just beat the hell out of stuff. But Jon always plays with great "intention." 🤘
Same with Dave Lombardo - that's why he would have been a much better choice to replace Dave than Paul Bostaph.
Fett
Love the drum cams , better then the concert itself
How are you able to remember songs on such a short notice? How important to you is it that you nail everything exactly? You're the man Jon I strive to be like you!
I'd love to hear an answer to this, too!
Gift from GOD!!!
It’s part of the job as a fill in. It separates the men from the boys and gets the gig. Jon is a fucking monster and should have a permanent job with a big band instead of just filling in. His resume speaks for itself.
Dude is a professional and awesome drummer no doubt. BUT if you make your own drum track for in ear monitors to help you start and finish at the right time, the rest can be picked up quickly and improvised. Just need the beginning, end, and major changes in between fed to you on in-ears
He probably does Nashville numbers or something like it. You break the songs down into parts and time signatures and the rest is feel. And mostly talent.
He’s always been amazing no matter what band he plays in , he makes them sound better . Awesome job as alway Jon 🤘🏼
Dette is a Bad Ass!!!!! Hail Mr. Dette!
I was there at the Portland show, I was extremely impressed with your playing Jon! Thank you for helping Volbeat, and letting the show go on.. you were magnificent!
Wow youre lucky guy with chops all those band you played you are an awesome hired gun 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🥁👏👏🇨🇦
My kid loves Volbeat.
I grew up with Slayer.
Incredible !!! That snare sound !
I have always admired Jon Dette`s shear musicality and style of play one of the best drummers I`ve heard ,,,,,,,,,, I also play drums left handed
Truly technical and just a bad ass…
Well done sir, you make it effortless
I saw him in Portland in January! Freaking awesome show all around. This drummer is ah-mazing, no mistakes. Good on you sir!!
Nothing but love for that! That was foooooooooking amazing!
Outfreakingstanding Sir. You never disappoint!
Fellow drummer here , you are a badass
You fucking DESTROYED us in Portland! I don’t think I’ll ever get a chance to see anything like that again! Phenomenal show and I’m so glad I was able to witness it. Thank you!!
I have those same cymbals, love them!
Congrats on getting a great gig, brotha!
F’n A!!!! Nice job brother!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽
badass as always buddy!
Wow, that was awesome! Reminds me i need to get to the gym. I get exhausted playing Modern English's I Melt With You with a classic rock band.
Glad to see that Jon got himself another good gig - he's a kick-ass drummer.
Always sounding good
Undisputed JD! 🔥🔥🔥
On not his kit or cymbals? Sick. Dette has been one of my favorites since I saw him with Testament. 🤘
OUTSTANDING VIDEO.
Always a class act!
Espectacular!!!
John is the most underrated drummer on earth, i wish slayer stayed with him when lombardo left instead of Paul.
Great job man 🤘🤘🤘🤘❤️❤️❤️😊
AWESOME!
The backstory about the sponsor conflict was cool to read. Never would have considered it.
Brutal!!!
Flawless!!!
Love those vids more more 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🥁🥁🇨🇦
He learned 16 songs in 24 hours. Guy is a genius .
No, but he's goddamn good pro.
Dude should be making millions…..but yet a kicker in the nfl makes more.
Very good bro, muito top mano...🇧🇷
I was at this show. The way you hit reminded me of Frankie Banali. 🤘👍❤ You did a hell of a job filling in- kudos! Thanks for coming to the rescue. Hadn't seen a show in so long & it was a great show!
Exactly! Banali was John Bonham of our generation rip Banali😰
Frankie Banali? Not even comparable.
@@scottawes921 I respectfully disagree.
@@scottawes921 Have you seen Banali live ? His left foot was like a piston and he’s a hard hitter
I'm not sure where you guys look to Frank ahead of many others. Don't get me wrong. Frankie was an awesome guy, and a great player. I saw him perform twice. He's good. Unless he's made huge leaps since the first two QR tours. Drummers are different. The genre they play might pigeonhole the credit they receive from fans.
Hes a perfect fill in guy. Awesome drummer.
Incredible
THAT is how a pro does. Good for Volbeat!
Absolute monster drummer. The king of thrash!
Great drummer and fellow lefty
Awesome drummer
This is badass Jon
Love seeing left handed drummers. Very rare. This dude kicks ass. I wonder what pedal he uses?
Jonny filling in for Jonny
Consumate Pro. Great job!
brilliant
Jon is amazing. The best metal drummer hands down! 👊🏼
Danny Carrey surpasses him by a mile ......
"This drummer is amazing"
Some guy
"UHMMMMM ACSHUALLY, DANNY CARREY FROM TOOL IS BETTER, YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS"
Average Tool fan
Dep extraordinaire....
RESPECT!
Awesome
Best metal drummer on the world
Careful!!! He is brilliant though.
Can't fucking wait to hear you on new Meshiaak!
Don't know if he remembers me but I teched for him with Testament on some shows.
Great job and on short notice. Not an easy task. The whole left handed thing throws me off every time though😂
Left handed drumming isn't that hard to understand. Good drumming starts with what is comfortable to that player. Think of it like how uncomfortable it is for you to write with your opposite hand, or throwing a ball, or swinging a bat. It's the same thing.
Don't really know what Volbeat is but damnit, I can respect a damn good drummer.
Rockabilly metal. Imagine Brian Setzer, Elvis and Metallica had a baby...that would be the seed of what Volbeat takes and makes their own. Guys are great!
@@vthunder volbeat is now one of my top favorites....saw them in Vegas in March...awesome..
Beast
Dette is a badass. Gemini(Slayer tune) absolutely proves that. That crash cymbal on his ride side sounds like a hi-hat top.
Bostaph played on that record.
That Octoride is sick
That’s fucking amazing
Portland show?
Total Pro. Enough said.
Wow great job I saw volbeat in Baltimore a few years ago they opened up for Metallica and avenge 7 fold and I thought they were great for an opening act
Wow!!!!!!!!
He is the best no doubt about it
Bad ass,.
Anyone know what ride cymbal that is?
20' RUDE power ride (info from wiki) sounds like it too
@@ArtyomAnna Thank you!
Looks like the 18” psyoctopus aquiles priester ride. Basically a smaller minibell ride
@@ArtyomAnna Correct! Custom painted black on top and white bottom with Volbeat skullwing logo on both sides
Im southpaw drummer too. Props jon
Confession:....I didn't even know that was a thing in drumming until I read these comments.....I need to just stick with playing the stereo.
А, че, Детте прекрасно валяет! Он всегда был силен
That ride is freakin pingy!
What is that?
paiste rude power ride i think
It looks like a Blue.
One of the few drummers who nails Bostaph's drum parts perfectly. You were amazing with Slayer
You mean Lombardo's. He replaced Bostaph and wss again replaced by Bostaph, but he played Lombardo's parts better than Bostaph ever did.
This cat is a fucking badass!!!
How did you like playing those Pearl drums? 😎
🤘🤘🤘🤘
You're right ! Lefty is the only correct way to setting a drumkit haha ! You've nailed it, GG !
Hahaha that shit throws me off every time!
...fuckin aye....#SAVAGE🤘
🤟🤟🤟
Ok. I have a question. Is this guy playing the volbeat drum kit, and are both drummers left handed? Or is the video flipped so it looks like it.?
John is left handed and as far as i know volbeats drummer is right handed
That is not Jon Larsens kit.
Read the Description, its all cleared up there.
@Rob Lee
So ok. That means they got John's kit to the venue, most likely. Talk about some pro logistics.
I have a late follow up thought if anybody cares....that would be how much time they would've had to contact Jon, get him and his kit there without changing the schedule. That was probably as brilliant as his drumming on short notice.
How do these guys know each other’s songs?
They don't. I know a few professional drummers and they actually learn the songs in a few days. They're that good.
Well, sometimes they can be fans of each other's music and that's why THEY get called, but either way, they are pros. They listen to all 16 songs on repeat to learn them, take notes, etc... and hopefully nail them when the time comes.
spot reading man. if you can play then you can listen and map out songs. Ear training helps as well plus reading notation.
Animal!!! WOW,short notice?No prob?learn 16songs in 24hrs?no prob?Play like it's his last time to perform?Yeeeeeeees sir!!!!!
Fuck yeah! Another southpaw!
He's amazing! No offense to there original drummer...John destroys him!..he makes volbeat way better!💪💪👊🔥🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎🤘🤘
their drummer
Dont forget who created all these amazing drum tracks though… also, as I hear precision is the same..
That’s a dumb comment. He’s playing
the original tracks for the most part of what the original drummer came up with . But he is good. Which is why he’s filling in.
Badass!
As far as I know you were a Paiste endorser (and yeah, the only correct choice considering cymbals).
Was he not also in The Cult
Your thinking john tempesta maybe..both great journeymen drummers
No mics on toms, just triggers? Or does he use internal mics or something?
The description clarifies this
My guess would be triggers. Who knows for sure?
@@scottawes921 internal tom mics, triggers for gates :)
Lefty Drummer!! Don't see that very often
Damm good
Those are some extremely heavy duty drum heads and cymbals, and those sticks? Gotta be oaks, not your over the counter ones.
How the fuck do you learn a whole set in such a short amount of time?
When you are good, then you are good🙂👍
if you know one, you know all
Firstly and most important, they are professional musicians, this is what they do for a living. What to you sounds complicated and impossible to read on a bar, for him is a question of minutes ; what for us seems like the best song, for them is "verse, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, solo, verse, verse, chorus" . Secondly, he might even have already known many of these songs before hand. And oh yea, he good, he's really GOOD at playing the drums. Don't forget he was in Slayer ;-)
He's a mutant. They call him "The Percussor"!
Have you seen when Dave Lombardo and especially Joey Jordison filled in for metallica one night? Fucking awesome. Joey was incredible, but before slipknot he played in a metallica cover band, so it was kind of second nature. But this dude rips man, you have to be a true pro to pull this shit off in such a short amount of time. Other thing is like somebody else said he’s a musician.. not just a drummer. I’m sure He can play many different styles of music and pick up on the details easily
С этой позиции видно только работу барабанщика, но...... сплошной шум. Это огромный минус тем, кто занимается монтажированием, сведением видео и звука.
