One of the best videos Clarkson has ever made. His enthusiasm always brings a smile to my face. And the Atom - what a dream machine.
I drove one of these last week and it is absolutely mad. You get completely pinned back in your seat and every gear shift sounds like an explosion behind you.

Just had a passenger ride in one of these today at a "Drivers day" event, I drove the Lambo Gallardo, Ferrari F430 and Aston DB9, all great but this thing was just incredible.. only thing I can compare it to is "Rita queen of speed at Alton Towers", but faster !!
Me and my daughter where watching this clip the other day laughing at his face blowing around!! Actually saw an Atom driving through Lancaster, that's what made me think of it.....and as for Rita...if that's true it really must be a fun as it looks!!!

Peter Wawoczny Think you're right about the passenger ride, the pro got way more out of it than I could, think he forgot where the brake pedal was :-) The Drivers Day was by Everyman racing at Elvington airfield near York but they have quite a few venues around the UK... best to keep an eye out on Groupon etc as there's often some very good deals

That thing is just amazing. I would love to get one and just go crazy with it. The Ariel Atom V8 is just absolutely insane.
Weird that they used a Honda CBR600RR instead a 1000 of some sort. I'm positive that a Honda CBR1000RR, Yamaha YZF-R1, Suzuki GSX-R1000 or Kawasaki ZX-10R would give that a run for it's money, especially if you throw a full exhaust and power commander on the bike.

In lap times, the engine displacement doesn't determine who's faster.
Tbh the rider was definitely not leaning in nearly as much as he could so thats also a factor....but still respect the hustle

The lined it up against a 600cc bike cos a 1000 would beat it. Indeed, Clarkson makes a comment about a ZX10 which I suspect they tried first, and which won, cos those things are animals.
I doubt a 1000cc would do better, given how small the Top Gear track is. 1000cc bikes just aren't as nimble around a little circuit; a 600cc 2-stroke is as good as you'll get for tight corners like that.
Anyway, they wouldn't need to cheat; the basic physics add up. A car can exert more downforce and corner faster because it's got much more surface area and more tire touching the road. In road cars this is all for naught because they've got a high centre of gravity, huge heavy bodywork and a lot of air resistance, but this thing follows the Formula 1 design principles, and power-for-power, those will always make something that's faster round corners than a comparable bike.
But I agree that it's not as exciting. Formula 1 is the fastest thing on tarmac, and it's like watching paint dry; bikes are visually and physically exciting in a way that something you sit down in can't really be.
i am sorry but you are wrong they compaired the 4cylinder atom with a 600cc bike and the v8 atom with a 1000cc bike because this way it is fair
@@boiledelephant bike corner speed are limited no matter how good they are, a motor gp race bike can't even beat that in a corner, but overall it has better acceleration on a straight line
When your Atom is stuck in a traffic light que and the bike pisses past. No car is as exciting as a big bike.

The lap times between 250cc and 1000cc motorcycles is maybe 2 seconds and that is with someone that is an expert! So it wouldn't matter to the average knuckle dragger that could buy this car. They would never reach the potential this thing can achieve.
I just want to drive one for a day and see if I could avoid giggling to myself as I pass a $500k Porsche.

I did a few laps in this yesterday in Swansea. It was the best vehicle iv ever been in without doubt as much fun if not more as any Motorbike iv been on. Incredible handling and so much fun to throw about its insane!!
I don't understand why you're getting so many thumbs down, you're completely right. Comparing a 600 to a car that's supposedly faster than a Ferrari Enzo is ridiculous. At the very least I would compare it a road-going litre bike, if not a GP bike or one of those tuned superstocks they race in WSBK.

My Brother-in-law has just been on a track day event today. Of all the stupidly expensive cars he drove, I'm insanely jealous that he got to do two laps in an relatively cheap (only in supercar terms, obviously!) Ariel Atom. God, I love this car!

Drove one at Rockingham raceway as well as a Ferrari 360. The Ariel won hands down on the excitement factor as well as handling. I would do it again any time!

Imagine this, your riding your motorcycle on a fantastic summer day, and your wearing a helmet with a face guard attached to it and your riding with it in the down position, your doing 60 to 70 down the highway, all of a sudden right out of the clear blue, you get a bad case of the sneezes, and even before you have time to flip up the face guard on the helmet, the first hits, these sneezing attacks while wearing a full faced helmet can get quite messy if you know what I mean...LOL

Hmm.. i've driven a track day car that has 120 horsepower and only weighs 540 kilograms and the acceleration was unbelieveable, it did 0-60 in about 4,5 seconds so i can kind of imagine what 300 horsepower and 500 kg would feel like! =)
