I was at Monaco in 73 for the race and those Cosworths were screaming. That was the best race I have ever attended. That was living back then. The F1 Lotus is so cool.
The cars fit the track. Unlike the cars of today. They are fooking huuugs.
That “Oohhh he’s broken the machiiinnee” is one of my all time favorite top gear moments
Right behind this is when Clarkson demonstrated the speed control with distance to the car in-front. Close.. very close.. full Audi!
Am I the only one who actually found May's comment about the Lotus' suspension interesting? Ha
i found it interesting
No
No. Most of the things they mock him for being "boring" and "technical" about are actually extremely fascinating, and any real car person would be thrilled to spend an hour or so talking about it. One of the biggest annoyances of the show, in my opinion, is the way they act as if "real car people" just like their cars to be fun, exciting toys that they don't actually understand. People like that are not car people, they are cocks and idiots.
@@justforever96 James May, is that you? ; ) Just kidding. Of course I agree.
Shane Mosser the other 2 aren’t that bright
"M3 drivers have no friends." LOL
audi drivers does have gay friends
+Hydrexz NL homophobe at its finest.
typical audi fanboys
Bet ya drive an M3 that you have to jump start every morning and that you don't have friends.
+Sean Bautista I actually drive a Ford Ranger. Try again.
I still don't understand how James May could explain the suspension mechanism of that Lotus yet don't even know the Monaco GP.
James may knows the Monaco grand prix. But even at top gear they work with Skripts, and they think it is funny to pretend that some times James and Richard don't know any thing about F1. But that is all just scripted. Fact is that it was a good program right until they left and came with the grand tour on amazon, which is also good.
Sebastiaan van de Weerd - I don’t understand what the BBC was thinking... *Top Gear* was the most popular show *_in the world_* and while Clarkson May have said/done something inappropriate to a member of the crew, pay them off and keep your stupidly popular show going !!!
@@grendelum I'm probably going to get beans for saying this, but no, don't pay someone off, hold Clarkson accountable for his boorish behaviour. No one called him on his racism or sexism, so he probably thought he could get away with assault...in a way he did, though, because no one pressed charges. He's not so important that he can throw a tantrum about something so petty as not getting a hot meal. I miss the show too - I wish Clarkson had just grown up a bit.
@@grendelum I believe he punched out the producer when he was denied something for the show. You don't get to punch your boss in the face, and keep your job.....anywhere.
@@d.e.b.b5788 he punched out his producer because the hotel that he booked wasnt serving hot food due to the time of night.
That Lotus had the coolest paint scheme ever. I have the Corgi Toy version. My Dads friend gave it to me around 1972.
Cool
Jps livery was so cool
Im from Perú I had also the corgi versión
in 1972 (Qué nostalgia 😢 😪)
Nothing will ever match their chemistry and passion that made that show so perfect.
5:23 clarkson literally made a man with balls of steel step back. gotta give it to him
"Some say that his balls are made from carbon fiber, and that he stores them in a tree for winter."
@@SvendleBerries "All we know is that he's called "The Stig"!"
LOL that bikini girl with that helmet
KRISHNA KUMAR JOSHI
its called a stiglett
...was the stig.
KRISHNA KUMAR JOSHI that’s the female stig
Thats’s Mrs. Stig
@@Shakes-Off-Fear *And you would like to stig her ?*
That sound of the Lotus F1,...how I miss the good old days.
Such a beautiful machine and so raw and pure and iconic
Boomer
@@minidanielx5208 Yes I am haha
*Jeremy:* I’m gonna be 430 years old by the time it gets here
*Hammond:* So that’s gonna take like half a year
Love the Stig standing nonchalantly on the apex!
5:22 At least he made the Stig flinched.
That's more of an accomplishment that hitting the apple
Stig is afraid of driving that bad
Seaghán Pipistrello With Clarkson driving a completely insane car, you’d move too
That JPS F1 remains the coolest looking F1 race car I have known. Absolutely gorgeous!
One of the, if not THE, most beautiful F1 cars ever made.
Jordan 191, McLaren MP4/8, Ferrari 641, Ferrari F2002
Bmw sauber idk the model
@@Person-cv9dj f1.08 2008 beautiful machine
@@R9naldo nah mate.
Lotus 49
Lotus 72
Lotus 80
Lotus 98t
Ferrari 640
Leyton House/March 881
The mclaren mp4/8 is pig ugly compared to half the cars that season. The Marlboro Livery is its saving grace.
Any car after the mid 90s is absolutely hideous and never got on my bedroom wall as a child.
But i did have a Lotus 72 poster, nigel mansell Williams Honda poster, Lotus 99t poster, and mansell ferrari 640 poster.
Despite being born in 1993. The older cars always fascinated me most.
@@theant9821 MP4/8 has a weird nose but I like the even smaller wheelbase that car had.
Mid 90s had some ugly cars but in my opinion 1997 was a year that had a lot of beautiful cars, like how 1991 had a lot too. Jordan 197, Williams FW19, Ferrari F310B, etc.
2000s are still fine but anything after 2008 is just awful especially the modern trucks
i miss the good old days with these three, i specially miss the episodes where Clarkson & Hammond would play a prank on Captain Slow. One of my favorites was when the were in India and wired his car's horn to his breaks and every time he would step on the breaks the horn would go off
or wrecking his Aircon in the USA special
2 of them will always play pranks when the other is not around
That F1 car is the most beautiful F1 I have ever seen. I had a model of it.
Agreed. A beautiful car that was so good they didn't change it for a much longer time than most.
Those cars are amazing and done without the aid of massive supercomputers. But if I had to pick one the F2004 is it. The car and a 3L V10 screaming to 19k gets me moist thinking about it. Especially with what they have become.
Best looking F1 cars: 1) Lotus 72D; 2) Lotus 79; 3) McLaren MP4/4. Interesting that all three were brilliant on the track, too.
The best looking F1 car ever i.m.o. was the 1967 AAR Eagle driven and manufactured by the late, great Dan Gurney. @@paulcaswell2813
Too 'busy' a design IMO. From that era I'd go for the 1966 Ferrari 312 - the special 'long chassis' one designed for the very tall Mike Parkes. The extra inch or so added an extra sleekness to an already fine design.
TopGear will never be the same without Jeremy
+Shaf Hoque is the show even going still?
+Bo Huggabee Yes, with new hosts.
oliver24x i imagine it'd be like watching friends with the cast of how i met your mother.
+Shaf Hoque Yep, of course, it has peaked, its done, and that is all...now lest tune into the online one and see how the lads will manage to spend a few million per episode on their amazon show...I reckon they will have an episode where they play Lamborghini dominos...lol
Top Gear is not top Gear without him
The moment at 2:53 where the Merc laptime is revealed, Hammond immediately bursts out laughing at Clarkson actually jumps in shock. xD
0:28 - So why have we never seen Mrs. Stig drive?! A golden opportunity missed there...
That old F1 sound gives me good shivers
M3 drivers have no friends
Mercedes drivers have friends called Spencer and Hugo
Audi drivers have boyfriends
@Bilal Khalid Nah, Nah thats Range Rovers.
Range Rovers are for drug dealers.
audi all the way
Wait, I'm an alfa and bmw driver and I've got a boyfriend...
When I first saw the Lotus 72 racing (albeit in Gold Leaf colours) I thought it was the most beautiful racing car ever built. I haven't changed my mind.
Lotus 72. The most glorious, most beautiful F1 car of all time. The genius and creativity of Chapman could only be matched by his balance sheets...
Have a good hard look at the 1967 AAR Eagle, that gets my vote.
@@barryfowles-zl5ib So? The "John Player Special" paint scheme is the most badass ever.
@@MeanGeneSanDiego I was merely giving my opinion, if that's all right with you?
The Stig is standing there on the side of the track like "You won't"
I would listen to James May's technical explanations.
That Cosworth DFV sounds so sweet.
Top Gear - I really miss Top Gear and all the wild adventures these three experienced. Just the best !
That Lotus 72 - including the way it was revealed here - absolutely took my breath away as a child watching this episode. The looks, the sound, the performance... it is a glorious machine. Still stuns me to this day. I can only imagine how incredible it was to have seen it actually racing in F1 in the 1970s, especially in person. It's also interesting - unsurprising now (purpose-built for it generally, much lighter, better aerodynamics etc.) though shocking as a child - how much faster the old thing was than any of the saloon cars round the track.
And BBC is crying every time they realize they blew it with TopGear. Think of the hundreds of millions of pounds they lost.
@@Fazer_600 Your statement is completely true and it makes me extremely sad. These guys are why I fell in love with cars. I'd always liked them before but top gear really brought home that love. Gonna miss all three of them. The greatest trio ever to Grace this Earth.
@@Fazer_600 You can't really disagree with the sacking, he wasn't sacked contract was not renewed.
I can guarantee if you punched a colleague on a corporate trip you'd be off site within the hour.
I am not sure if you are a key person to the companys success and the colleague has done a crappy work with organization not even able to ensure hot food was available. Private company is quite another thing than bbc. If Steve jobs kicked out someone in the 2000s do you think Apple would have sacked him? In your dreams. Not saying it is right of course.
the banter between these three is just priceless.
I remember this being the first ever episode of Top Gear I've seen!!
I miss this {wipes a small tear from his eye, but quickly recovers}
That episode I have watched a thousand times, love it
How Fun!!! What a day of brilliance...
The black and gold was unreal
Top gear at its best. It will never be the same
That F1 sounds glorious!
2:30 Hammond has felt that twice now
"M3 drivers have no friends" 😂😂😂
It's funny because it's TRUE
The ASCARI Race Resort near Ronda in Andalusia has to be one of my favourite places on earth.
Brilliant track, brilliant facilities and awesome countryside! 😀
That sound!!!
I really miss this show. Damn you BBC!
Stig and Stiggette
We got a rare glimpse of Mrs Stig in the background at the pool.... Nice!!!
I just love the way jeremy loses both bets types things, you realise he didn't have a chance when you see even his registration plate says that he "sucks lol
Really miss these guys.
Back when you got blisters changing gears in an F1 car, sounded beautiful
Lol, "the important thing is, Jeremy won't get bored."
Top Gear was the best auto show ever! I'd like to see those 3 visit Jay Leno's Garage.
full length add, fascinating.
I'm weeping a little right now...
Superb car, Colin Chapman at his best.
So, who else had the Matchbox model of this?
Got both Corgi Whizzwheels versions in black / gold. One has Texaco all over the other has the John Player (yes, that is cigarette advertising on a children's toy, but hey, we could accept it in the 70s-we weren't all so gullible). The model wasn't a 1/64 like m'box but roughly 1/36 scale
@@andrewphippsphillips1455 When I was an F1-mad 10 year old I wrote my name with the Rothman's Livery on my "drawer" at school. That'd probably make the papers and get my parents arrested today. Oh well, it's the current state of things that is the regrettable, temporary aberration. Tobacco sponsorship will return when things get better.
If it was the Corgi it wasn't 'Whizzwheels' - it was as good as scale model as one could get. Especially if one's father drilled to rivets out of the bottom so the driver figure could be removed!
I still have one made by Corgi. And another by Politoys.
Grand Tour is awesome too! Also, I'm happy the BMW won
Got to love it
Hermoso F1! El sonido de motor es hermoso!
Oh that DFV noise 💪🏽
Just the best show ever.
It’s crazy to see the evolution of formula 1 cars. From this (70s) till now 2022
To hell with the rest of the show I want to see more of that beautiful Lotus AND HEAR ABOUT ITS SUSPENSION!

The good days of topgear 😔

lines that hit hard
U 4 were brilliant. thanks for the entertainment.
The end was hilarious.
Happy New Years! BBC reminding themselves they're losing hundreds of millions of dollars per year after losing these guys
+Scope951 cough* Pounds... and it's funded by the license fee, so actually they're better off.... because they don't have to pay the lunatic his exorbitant fee to make a fool of himself
Evan Krantz
I personally stopped watching TG regularly about 5 years back, i'd catch the odd one on re-runs, but they started to just do the same stuff over....and over...and over again, i won't be watching the new TG/whatever, there's loads of stuff by the BBC that isn't TG that's worth watching, and top shelf for car guys..LOL try some Mighty car mods, some Hot rod magazine, Motortrend channel, Roadkill etc, try watching Drag week in it's entirety, even Dross like 'Street Outlaws' is more entertaining than clarkson
+Scope951 Do you really think they do not appreciate that? Do you think all the other people on the show and the BBC fif not want it to happen? However Clarky decked someone, the Mirror took revenge on Clarky and published the story, one that 99% of the time would not be published. BBC left with no choice.
morierty actualy top gear was the bbcs highest earning shiw world wide.probably has something to do with being the most watched show on earth.and the show was self funded from its profits so unlucky on your failed clarckson bashing pal
@ ian miles-> I'll think of that when I don't pay a tax on my 7 TV's....including one in the upstairs master bathroom...
5:22 for the first time the stig moved unnoticed
Best top gear clip
That Lotus has the best livery of any race car ever IMO. Also if I were to daily drive these cars, I'd have the Benz by a country mile.
Nah. Audi.
Jeremys a legend.
The dad of a friend of mine drove this car in the Mexico GP in the 78

The Stigs girlfriend is 🔥
Classic TG
Cosworth DFV is a pure symphony.
Love that 3 Litre Cosworth sound...❤️❤️❤️❤️ Gorgeous.

“The important thing is...Jeremy won’t get board.” LMAO!!!
Without doubt, the best looking F1 cars EVER, any JPS Lotus followed by any non-JPS Lotus
Well, I did like the white/red/gold ones, too.
You have obviously never seen the 1967 AAR Eagle F1 car.
I miss these guys
Yes,Top Gear without them is like Benny Hill show without Benny Hill.
Oh, he's broken the machine :D
i miss these days
Miss the old folks!!
Even without cars, these guys were good
Excelente
Ah I miss this show
@1:21 Now every single race they bring something new.
The description is wrong, it's obviously not the top gear test track
Those F1 Cars from that Time have round about the same Performance like todays DTM Cars.
And they test it vs. Street Cars xD
I had a die cast toy of this car. It was my favorite toy.
I really wanna know what the stig face look like when Clarkson was trying to hit the Apple
I remember stig at the pool ,but I don't remember it with the lotus
they said "boring" a lot during this and Ithink it sums up the whole episode
The great taste of Michelin
Ascari was one of the best tracks in GT6.
Emerson Fitipaldi had the best looking F1 car.
“M3 drivers have no friends” that actually made me laugh out loud
That thing has a torsen bar suspension?!? Thats as crazy as can am cars having spool differentials
The original is still the best series in the history of television, worldwide!
That Merc does sound nice though
As an m3 driver I am sitting at home at 1115 on Saturday so yes we have the fastest cars but no friends
