No. Most of the things they mock him for being "boring" and "technical" about are actually extremely fascinating, and any real car person would be thrilled to spend an hour or so talking about it. One of the biggest annoyances of the show, in my opinion, is the way they act as if "real car people" just like their cars to be fun, exciting toys that they don't actually understand. People like that are not car people, they are cocks and idiots.
James may knows the Monaco grand prix. But even at top gear they work with Skripts, and they think it is funny to pretend that some times James and Richard don't know any thing about F1. But that is all just scripted. Fact is that it was a good program right until they left and came with the grand tour on amazon, which is also good.

Mid 90s had some ugly cars but in my opinion 1997 was a year that had a lot of beautiful cars, like how 1991 had a lot too. Jordan 197, Williams FW19, Ferrari F310B, etc. 2000s are still fine but anything after 2008 is just awful especially the modern trucks

Those cars are amazing and done without the aid of massive supercomputers. But if I had to pick one the F2004 is it. The car and a 3L V10 screaming to 19k gets me moist thinking about it. Especially with what they have become.
Too 'busy' a design IMO. From that era I'd go for the 1966 Ferrari 312 - the special 'long chassis' one designed for the very tall Mike Parkes. The extra inch or so added an extra sleekness to an already fine design.

That lotus looks and sounds amazing. 420 bhp was alot back in 1972. 420 bhp, now, is what you normally get in a fast, 4 door family saloon car, probably. I don't think the Stig could have tried harder on the timed lap. Even, I could see that Mercedes was hard to control on the track. Good to see the Audi finally win a challenge-The Cockometer challenge. I'm glad of that, because, I'd have the Audi out of the 3.
That Lotus 72 - including the way it was revealed here - absolutely took my breath away as a child watching this episode. The looks, the sound, the performance... it is a glorious machine. Still stuns me to this day. I can only imagine how incredible it was to have seen it actually racing in F1 in the 1970s, especially in person. It's also interesting - unsurprising now (purpose-built for it generally, much lighter, better aerodynamics etc.) though shocking as a child - how much faster the old thing was than any of the saloon cars round the track.
Got both Corgi Whizzwheels versions in black / gold. One has Texaco all over the other has the John Player (yes, that is cigarette advertising on a children's toy, but hey, we could accept it in the 70s-we weren't all so gullible). The model wasn't a 1/64 like m'box but roughly 1/36 scale

I think most of everyone here forgot about ONE thing...ok so the F1 car has ONLY 420hp...which nowadays seems quite low. HOWEVER...if you factor in the weight of each car compared to the Lotus...they are more than double...closer to triple. Therefore the saloon cars would need at LEAST 800+horsepower to be even close to the Lotus. The results of this "test" surpised me none. I watched it to watch the Lotus only and admire that beautiful beast.

Sounds like the 4 liter V8 in the BMW. That's the 5 liter M5 V10 with two cylinders chopped off.
An F1 car built in 1970, with less power than a Mercedes AMG...goes nearly 30 seconds faster. You can never beat a racecar, whatever the era it was made.
That Merc does sound nice though
