One of the absolute funniest Charlie Chaplin movies is A Night At the Show! That short is hilarious! The "snobby" look on his face as he interacts with others in the theatre is hilarious! Not to mention his second part of the guy in the balcony! Priceless! (The characters in the audience are worth watching too!) BUT, my all time favorite movie ever is City Lights. That final scene where he appears in shredded and tattered clothing...the poorest of poor...breaks your heart. You know he is in that position because he paid the price for a crime he did not commit. But it doesn't stop there...the symbolism in that final scene is amazing! As he is walking, the newsboys are heckling him and using a pea shooter to target him, yet he keeps moving forward. As he walks in the opposite direction of the passersby (against the norm) his mistreatment goes unnoticed by everyday people who choose to not "see" that this man, The Tramp, is being mistreated, nor do they "see" his destitute situation, nor do they care. Not deterred, The Tramp, still does the right thing, turns his other cheek to the newsboys. Then, only The Tramp notices the small beautiful flower swept into the gutter and takes the time to pick it up, (he does for the flower what the passersby did not do for him - saved it from the gutter) and he is reminded of a long lost love. He again suffers humiliation at the hands of the newsboys and must chase them away. The Tramp then innocently turns and to his surprise, is now facing the The Blind Woman. Both are now "on display" to each other, separated by an ever present socially invisible divider (the window), rich vs. poor. As their eyes meet, she is merely amused by him (forgetting her own past poverty) he is awestruck that he has finally found the long lost love of his life! The flower he held is now falling to pieces...a symbol of what is to come - the falling away of his unknown identity. She then offers him trinkets (a coin and small rose) from her now wealthy lifestyle (while The Tramp gave his all to her when he himself was in poverty). As he runs from her and she stops him and they now turn to face each other. For a split second it is as Michelangelo's painting where God is reaching out to Adam and Adam to God on the verge of receiving the breath of life and knowledge, and so it is here too...only in this scene the hands make contact! And a wealth of information is transcended! Her hand travels from his hand to his lapel where she once placed a flower all those years ago when she was blind and it is now revealed to her the true identity of the one who changed her life! Her eyes now reveal that all she formerly believed is now gone as the truth is standing before her. The scene changes to him genuinely smiling...leaving the audience with a flood of emotions for their own interpretation on endless scenarios for their future. Fast forward 90 years later and there is no green screen technology used today could come anywhere near capturing the genius of this scene. (Sorry for the long post!)

I just have to thank you, Spencer and your wonderful father Eugene, for sharing this. I am such a fan of your grandfather, his spirit, creativity, genius and tenacity... and one of these days I would love to share the tale of how my love for Charlie Chaplin films as a little girl was the catalyst that saved my life in my adulthood, I am truly eternally grateful for the brilliance of this man, his vision, his voice, his heart and his humility. Thank you for keeping the torch lit!

What a great family… I am so proud of the Chaplins… sounds weird but I just am! Decent people an not one (!) of them to this day disgraced that great name… I have always loved Chaplin. As a kid he was just that funny tramp, as I grew up I started to appreciate the tragedy in his films also. Having a strong melancholic trait myself always made me feel that he was a kindred spirit. My sister gifted me a book about his childhood, when I was a kid and I suddenly could understand the tragedy and the pain in his work. Now that I am older I can finally see his pure genius. He made people watch a silent movie, when new technologies were available and talkies, even first movies in color were made. He could do that, because his spirit and the stories he wanted to tell were enough to the audience. He invented the art of moviemaking and told stories of the “little man”. The outsider. The “other man”.
I love and admire him so very much for being who he was and for sharing his genius with us.
“City Lights” is my all time favorite. It is impeccable.

I loved The Gold Rush and in particular the scene where Charlie buries big Jim's gun like a dog would bury a bone,it's little bits of comic business like that which sets Charlie apart from the rest for me and make him so funny nearly a hundred years on.

Wow! Beautiful channel. I just found it today. This channel needs more publications. It should have millions of subscribers. At least should be promoted in The Universities, schools of arts, filming etc.. Charles Chaplin's legacy is infinite.
Thank you for the creation of this channel.

I read your grandfather’s autobiography recently and I can’t remember exactly where, or which movie, but he does talk about the moment he realized he could evoke other emotions (such as sadness) in people. I believe it was a scene where he was trying to get a job, and although it wasn’t supposed to be funny, he was pantomiming to his potential boss that he has little ones at home that he needs to feed. And then when they cut the scene, some of the back of house staff were actually weeping. 🥺

Hello from Italy. I always follow your podcasts, I really liked this one in particular. I have always been fascinated by the artistic figure of Charlie Chaplin, and I have seen most of his films. I can't wait to be able to visit the Manoir de Ban. Greetings from Italy

Hey, Spencer, I'm so glad to have found your channel. I am a super fan of your grandfather. I would love it if you could put together a compilation of Charlie speaking/giving interviews on-camera. They seem to be so rare. Also, can you tell me what color his eyes were? Much love to you and your family!!

It’s really hard for me to pick a favourite. Like your father mentioned, it depends on my mood. I love them all for different reasons. But I do absolutely love the Night Out short, it always brings me out of a rut. The characters are all just so bizarre, and Charlie is just so underwhelmed with everyone. 😂 Gold Rush was great too, especially the scene where he eats his shoes. 😂 I imagine it was really licorice?

Was Modern Times or The Great Dictator the Tramp's last film? Even though he speaks, the Jewish Barber's behavior is more Tramp like than not. That's how I see it.
