I know you're not a huge fan of Metroidvanias, but Dread really does reward exploration, out-of-the-box thinking, and combat mastery in a way I haven't seen in other games in the genre. Even if you don't end up enjoying it, I'd still love to hear your thoughts.

Does exploration even exist in Dread!? The maps are very small and the moment you unlock the map info (which is usually very early in an area) you know too much about your surrounding. For example, the map shows you the rooms that still have hidden items or paths which really takes the exploration experience out of the game. Also, even without getting the extra hidden missiles you are usually overpowered enough and almost all bosses die before you finish half of your missiles, so there is no real point to get all of them. The worst thing is that there is no risk for exploration because there are so many checkpoints everywhere that you can just explore each new location without even getting worried to die. I think for the same reason that Mayo didn't like RE8, he is not going to like Metroid Dread.

IMO I don't think I encountered any moments which made me go "that's bullshit" aside from an occasionally unfortunate overlapping unit path.
Only points against it (which some might consider a positive) is that exploring some zones triggers in-game events without it necessarily being clear to the player. Also some in-game systems & mechanics are a little obfuscated & not immediately obvious eg. the most convenient version of the fast travel system (between save points) needs to be unlocked with a large amount of in-game currency
Also it's a metroidvania, which you really seem to dislike. And some progression & unlocks do require some backtracking. But 'generally' speaking, each zone still plays somewhat like a level.

I’ve been watching since your first Marauder video. I feel like I understand what you like and don’t like in a video game, yet I’m still wondering if I should recommend this game to you because you will either like it or hate it, no in-between. Well, here goes: I’d like to see your take on the hitman franchise, more specifically the latest trilogy. If you’re like me, you’ll play it, understand it, master it, and love it. Personally I am in love with this franchise because it encourages replayability. That’s the name of the game, the solid base of it. You learn the beautiful level design, you learn your target’s routes and habits, and you find opportunities to strike. There are so many different ways to kill your target. So many. Doing so will complete “challenges”, the game’s way of giving you exp points. But challenges don’t just have to be about murder, there are many challenges that are simply about messing around in every map and discovering new things. I have over 300 hours into the new trilogy and I still didn’t 100% it. If you’re not like me, then you’ll think of this game as a very boring shooter, or a walking simulator (yes, people have really said that in reviews). Now of course there are flaws. No game is flawless and no game will ever be. The main problems are the always-online connection to earn progression, the very confusing marketing strategy, and the occasional bugs in the latest installment, hitman 3. If you are interested in buying the trilogy, you first have to understand all the different ways to purchase the games, because the best way to experience it is to play the entire trilogy all inside hitman 3. It’s a cool idea, to have all missions under one roof, all using the same engine, practically “remastering” the first two games. But sadly it wasn’t executed very well. That’s that, I’m too tired to continue, I’m gonna go sleep hoping you see this comment. Oh and one more thing, the games are on sale almost all the time, so if you feel it’s too pricey, wait for the next sale.

I was thinking something similar but I don't know about the newer hitman games. Admittedly I haven't played them though, just heard some things.
I played silent assassin, contracts, and blood money and I thought they were great. Focusing on completing every level with the best rating possible really forced me to figure out the best plan and then execute it near perfectly. The open ended design of how to get through each mission is the key to how great the games are. It was a lot of fun and quite challenging.

You can tell you're enjoying a game very quickly. You can also tell when you're not impressed or actually hate a game really quickly too. As a writer, it is the responsibility of the artist to make your work engaging from start to finish. If it's failing at that, the player/reader has every right to move on. It ofc didnt come out in 2021 (and thats how i found this channel) but for me it was Doom Eternal, heck id even say its the best game ive played.
I used to remember those insane moment in games where as a kid, i had certain boss fights or even normal enemies sometimes that made my heart pump like crazy, and the joy when i would finally get over them, my hands would literally be shaking after those. In Doom Eternal the whole frickin game is like that, i didnt know that was possible. The combat, the fast pace decision making, the music, the badass lore, it all feels so fckin good, and after i found out that we had so many different weapon combos, quick switching, faltering tactics (thanks mayo for all these), i knew this was the first game that i could say that id wanna play forever.
i know im late and praise for this game feels kinda dated at this point, but this game changed my perspective on why/how i enjoy and appreciate games, that i wanted to get it out at least once, and apparently YT hasnt forgotten either coz it thinks this video is about Doom eternal lol.

I find this to be rather shitty of some people. Life is short, so if you don't enjoy something enough to push through to the end, then it's best to just drop it and move on to something you enjoy. Just doing research on the later parts is enough to get a more full perspective.
Of course, we live in a world where people feel obligated to continue experiencing what they dislike due to their own fault and wasting hours of their lives, so I'm not surprised if they make such petty criticisms like this.

That is like doing a book review and only getting 1/3 through it, then using spark notes to get the summary of the final chapters. • @ultrairrelevantnobody1862

I find books to be different. They're stories, so doing research on the later parts just for a basic summary of what happens after results in spoiling it and ruining the story. With games, the main focus is the gameplay, so it's not exactly a spoiler to find out if the game gets better or worse from standpoints like design, mechanical evolution, difficulty curve, etc. Sure it's not the same as actually playing the whole thing, but if what comes later doesn't look like it will address the problems then dropping out for good is fine and makes logical sense.

I'm subscribed to a content creator, called Farlands Design Den, and he has reviewed several games he couldn't finish, like Zelda 2 on NES. He does a bit of research to look up if he might be missing something that would justify continuing the game, and if there isn't anything then the game playing stops as such. As long as the review is good, then I don't care if they're unable to finish it.
I've played some games to completion that I heavily regret in retrospect. Tomb Raider Chronicles on PS1, for example, is a game I wanted to stop playing after slowly slogging through the final few levels thanks to unbearable pacing, as well as several points of save corrupting bugs. I only finished it just to say I finally finished all the PS1 games, and nowadays the only ones I bother replaying are 1 and 3. Another game I'm trying to finish is Donkey Kong 64, and it's such a boring game with so much back and forth wandering around and repetitive gameplay. I'm most likely just going to drop it, and I've played Bubsy 3D to 100% five times in the past, which I didn't mind much despite its glaring flaws.

It also requires you to make solid team compositions. Trust me when I tell you it's extremely satisfying to beat the Insane mode playthrough. I played Back 4 Blood this year and it made me appreciate how good L4D is, hell it's funnier to play L4D with bots than B4B with a full squad, game is buggy, dull, unnecessarily loot-based and as atmospheric as subway-station monochromatic tiles. Halo Infinite was meh, they obviously spent more time tunning the multiplayer, even though Big Team Battle matchmaking is still not working and the game crashes on me at least once a day. Crappy game overall, but it's Halo I guess it's still fun to play with friends.

Yep that is correct. The creative leads left the studio to make games more in their style in the indie scene. Triple A stuff heavily discourages experimentation and tries to play it safe because the risks of failing are too high and tons of people would lose their jobs if it fails. Understandable tbh

Can the narrative stop that RE5 and 6 are "bad" games and made the series "sillier". The series was always stupid and Code Veronica is where it became a parody of itself. That Wesker vs. Alexia fight makes me roll on the floor laughing for how terrible it is. And Alfred Ashford's voice acting is laughably terrible. RE5 and 6 have more personality than RE8 at the very least.

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  2 роки тому +2

CV isn't a core line series so I'm not counting it. Things were pretty silly with RE0 and I'm not counting that either. RE5 is when things just started getting way over exaggerated with wesker teleporting and people backflipping off motorcycles and chris punching boulders. So yes, if we're talking mainline numbered resident evil games, 5 and 6 is when things got really silly.

The best game I played in 2021 was Furi. It's a twin stick isometric game focused solely around boss fighting. Each boss is fun and unique, the soundtrack is exceptional, and your character's moveset is precise and satisfying to use. The only real criticism is the games length. If you just play the standard difficulty, the game is extremely short. Even if you also play the higher difficulty you can still blast through this game in a relatively short period of time. Despite this, Furi's engaging combat system is unlike anything else I have ever seen in a videogame, making it well worth the price.
