Sifu is absolutely my GOTY. The replay editor, whilst you stated you weren't interested in it, also hammered down my high good graces of it. But with all its flaws, it's a game that surpasses to such a point you just have a true attachment to its 'character' or what it 'brings to the table'. We focus too much on the individual nitpicky factors in games, but we don't often see games holistically. GOTY doesn't need to be perfect. It can be heavily flawed. So long as it delivers a whole experience, the one you never realised you needed so much. At least that's the way I see things. Also happy new year UTM. Whilst I can't say agree or align with all of your takes, I see where they come from and I accept them as yours. And you focus a lot on the one principle I care about the most in gaming... the sense theatre in gameplay in and of itself. Like Sifu's martial arts feeling, the fun zone of those shooters you like, Streets of Rage etc and the way games force the theatre down your throat so agitatingly... like Ragnorak. Can't stand it. But some people love it and good for them. And you'll probably get into some more controversy even in this year. But I'd say you managed the crap that happened last year perfectly. whilst my front page was suddenly flooded UTM takes it didn't take long for me to realise these guys are grifters, racing with whatever they can to get YPP eligibility. It's important to have 'enemies' in the gaming community. In fact, if you don't have any, you should go about making them. Because they're dispensable, and you've made good use of the rampant ire of gamerbro culture and grew with it. So... to another year 🥂 Also, I never played Dying Light but I did play Dying Light 2. You made the right call.
I find it really weird you did not point out biggest flaw of Dying Light. Melee damage in this game is 100% RNG. You have a percentage change to blow up zombie head with a melee attack, and that's it. Sometimes you can hit it once, and he died, but sometimes it takes literally 30 strikes to kill a single bastard.
This happens in early game tho, when you still have crappy weapons, it is somewhat intended to make fighting against a single or just a couple zombies easy enough but also making you evade them and engage in the parkour gameplay loop. However this all changes in the later half of the game, especially when you get to the old town area. You start finding way better weapons like swords, axes, etc... And this makes combat extremelly satisfying as most normal zombies will go down in around 3 hits, making you feel way more powerful
“Spire players know what I’m talking about.” So true. I have to all but pry myself from clickin on StS when I am trying to play other things in my backlog. 1000 hours in and I still suck, couldn’t love it more.
Dying Light is one of my fav games and I'm not at all surprised it wasn't for you lol. My top spot for worst game of the year goes to its sequel sadly. Thanks for another year of awesome content man, so glad I found your marauder video a couple years ago you're by far my favourite content creator on UA-cam. Please keep it up!
DL2 is a wierd one, Loving some parts and mostly perplexed by others, for example it's very clear the floatiness doesn't feel as good as DL1's tightness to its parkour but then in a map like Villedor, DL1'S movement would result in many random deaths for both casuals and pros. I would say they're quite similar yet very much different neither better nor worse imho, except for the Gear, miss me with that games, please.
@@PedroElPolako I think the parkour and map were the only good parts of Dying Light 2, especially with the grappling hook. Didn't like the para-glider as it trivialized, well, everything. Difficulty was my main issue with the game, it was nowhere near as tense as the first game especially since no volatiles roam around during the night. It was an absurdly easy game which killed the horror atmosphere the first game got so well.
Because of you, I heard of Metal: Hellsinger and SW3. Thanks, Mayo. Now I’m the #1 Hellsinger on XSX and currently addicted to SW3 on Hardcore. (First playthrough, as I’ve just bought it a day ago).
Thank you, Under The Mayo. There are few reviewer, or even critics, have the guts to call out popular games like God of War: Ragnarok. They are too afraid of enraging the fan boys to state the truth. And thank you for your personal recommendations and a list of games to steer clear from.
I am an old god of war fan. He is right, god of war ragnarok did have some bad stop, combat was still mostly good but bad at parts due to enemies doing really bad movements flying across the room, which is really annoying, unblockable unavoidable attack from a distance, specialy sucks on higher difficulties were you die from 3 hits. The ending was also rushed, underwhelming, very anticlimactic considering this whole saga has been about "ragnarok", yet neither thor nor odin were superior to baldur's cinematic fights. Even without those stuff, i do believe it's unrealistic to have a single game were it gets zero criticism. So i don't get mad at all at any review really just showing their point of view. But why would you have to say "fanboys" and all that? Even god of war die hard youtubers are complaining about these things, god of war fans have been passionate about critism, so i believe you have mistaken god of war fandom for some other games, like a certain game that came out 2-3 years ago... on that, i would agree.
Just from that comment, you seem like very silly, wannabe contrarian. I didn't watch Mayo's Ragnarok... review(?). But what from what he's said about the previous game and in the video with Kaptain Kuba being mostly tripe, I wouldn't expect much of a substantive critique. And I'm someone who didn't think the 2018 game was amazing until I replayed it in late 2021. Initially I thought it was pretty great overall, but was disappointed. Anyway... It's no surprise that Mayo's favorite God of War game is the worst game in the series developed by Sony Santa Monica. Pretty expected that he'd have that borderline irrational opinion as well.
Great video mayo, always fun to hear your thoughts on games. I think you should do a video (or videos) analysing the original god of war games (1, 2 and 3), id watch that for sure Edit: or a video on why silent hill downpour is so bad, I only played it for like an hour at a friends house, it would be cool to understand why you hate it so much (also I never played the original silent hill games)
Man Sifu's checkpoint mechanic turned me off the game so fast. I kinda wish it was like a game where I can respawn at checkpoints with the health I had when I reached them. Or just restart the level, the aging system instead of making me learn how to play the game better made me obsess immediately about doing the first level deathless. And finishing a fight after dying felt awful because I didn't earn it I just lost and then said sike got better and beat em. What a shame
I absolutely love dying light and even more god of war ragnarok but I totally get what you mean by your points and I love all the games on your best list. Nice video, especially the end with Abel hahai
CULTIC and Forgive Me Father are 2022's two most underrated first person shooters in my opinion. I got all achievements on both of those games on Steam. I also 100%ed the achievements of Shadow Warrior 3 being a fan of the IP since the original 1997 Build version. Respected list you have here UTM!
Appreciate your takes! Games that you may like: 1)Nioh 2 (Beautiful Souls-like with way more choices, mechanica and replay ability) 2)Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (for the story and amazing sound design and sound track creating a visceral experience; some puzzle solving with similar action to God of War made to support story). The less you know about the game going in, the better. Great content! All the best!
No joke, comparison between Prey and DL is super interesting, they share comparable game design philosphies, but I only enjoy 1 one of them. I can replay Prey, but barely get through DL, weird.
Is the comparison down to the immersive sim elements? I never thought Dying Light touched on that too heavily, though I suppose it does give the player a lot of freedom in how they approach combat and parkour to get to their goal. Absolutely love both games though.
I frequently disagree with you Mayo, but I give you kudos for being up front about your biases. You clearly enjoy very specific types of games (can't imagine you enjoying something like Disco Elysium), and that's always good to know whether you're praising or panning. Very Roger Ebert of you.
Notice how the three games on the worst list were all AAA games, and many on the great list were indie. I’m not surprised I guess, but you’d think the leaders in gaming of the AAA studios would be able to make better games than developers working out of a basement or with a small team, but clearly AAA studios have been deluded somehow.
@Luke Dennis it also has to do with budget. AAA devs receive a MASSIVE budget for developing their games, which can help devs to make their games as sleek and up to date, as well as pretty. The issue is that the budget doesn't come from nowhere as it comes from the companies bank, so there is a demand to be made for the game to not only be successful but it must make as much money that is OVER the budget provided so that the company gets a return of investment and can keep it from bankruptcy. So because of this, a lot of devs will have their creativity strifered as the ideas and features implemented into an AAA game must be something that is popular and guarantees a lot of money, so GOW has diablo like loot system, automatic platforming, side quests, material hunting and so on.
Highly recommend a channel called DEGREELESSNESS to learn more on this phenomena. It’s not an accident that AAA games are mostly horseshit anymore and this channel goes in depth about it.
I really appreciate your view as a Game critic Mayo. Even though I'm not invested in shooters, survival horror or most beat'em ups I still see your videos. Personally, I'd love to see you playing game genres that could take you out of your comfort zone, to make things refreshing even though (as you maybe aren't that experienced in them) they don't take the spotlight here on UA-cam (maybe I should come more to Twitch huh). Keep up the great work! You've been a great Discovery for me :)
I'm glad that a channel like yours exists, where you can shit talk one of my favorite games ever: Dying Light, and I have no problems with it. In fact, I find it quite entertaining and agreeable. Thanks, Mayo.
I think that you might like Post Void, its an Roguelike FPS with cerebral, Tool-inspired visuals, to get to the end you need to dominate its gameplay, its hella fun and very short
That is a scorchingly hot take to have Dying Light as your most hated game of the year. It’s honestly one of my favorite zombie games of all time lol. Everyone has their own opinions though, so more power to you.
I actually enjoyed reading the notes in signalis they add more depth to the story and you read and get to know more about the character's and what their backstories are
Blood 2 was the first game I played on my first computer. Upgraded from onboard gpu to a voodoo 2 PCI. I called every friend that owned a console to come and see the graphical fidelity.
I hate the fact that you're right about ragnarok, I love this game to my core of cores but I'd be a damn liar if i didn't say that a lot of the decisions made were absolutely dogshit and horrendous. Man I pray that the next game in the series will be a more consistent game like 3 because this level of bullshit was so bad that it's on the line of being unacceptable.
I have not played many new games this year, but most of them were good. Can't pick out the best of the best this year, so here is the list: 1. Control. Remedy and Sam Lake continue to knock it out of the park with their games. The story, setting, style and gameplay are simply great. 2. Terminator Resistance. This was a huge surprise. It's a bit janky, but the reverence for the franchise makes it an official Terminator 3 for me. It was extremely fun sneaking around terminators and finding ways to either kill them or avoid them. And the soundtrack, oh my god. Really glad these guys are making an official Robocop game, starring Peter Weller. 3. Dishonored 1 and 2. Took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, it became extremely fun. 4. Signalis. Contender for the best classical survival horror of the decade. Special mention goes to God of War prequels on PSP. I had no idea they could pull off such high quality titles on a portable console. The bad ones: 1. Callisto Protocol. Exact same sentiments as in the video. Although I kinda like some of its parts, it's a shallow game through and through. 2. God of War 2018. Finally beat it this year, and it is one of the most overrated games ever created. I would not say it sucks all the way down, but things it gets right are completely overshadowed by shallow gameplay mechanics, terrible pacing and annoying semi-open world design. Overall, a pretty good gaming year
I don’t think I’ve ever watched a channel where I agree with the reviewers perspective on gaming but disagree with many of their points of contention. It’s like getting kicked in the head by a horse. Keep on enjoying what you enjoy Mayo!
My fauvorite game that i played this year was propably cruelty squad, the art style, the story, the levels, the guns the exploring for secrets, all of it made an interesting and enjoyable videogame. Its like hyper demon tbh
I thought I was one of the few people who thought Dying Light was not great at all. My best friend wanted to play it with me, and was so confused when I said “I don’t know man, it’s not really that fun.”
For someone of such refined taste, I'm surprised about how many samey FPS games you actually play. Not that they're bad or anything, but hard to imagine the genre constantly still entertaining you.
I would really love to know what you think of Daymare:1998. Thanks for the video. I love your channel a lot. Keep up the good work. And fuck the new God of War games.
I was not expecting Dying Light to be the worst game that you played on 2022 because I remembered that you played it in 2021. Guess I remembered it wrong. Anyway great video! I always look forward to your best and worst of the year.
Oh boy. I tired dying light for the first time last year in december and man was it boring. The endless tume waste of looting enemies, picklocking boxes, airdrop distractions, crappy weapon durability, weapon swapping system...it goes on and it never gets any better.
I've been on a retro binge for most of the year, but my favorite "modern" game that I played was a Shinobi clone named Shadow Gangs, with almost 30 hours played so far, with no signs of quitting. It's not perfect, but IMO, it almost does for Shinobi what SoR4 did for Streets of Rage. Deceptively simple game, with great challenge and a lot of depth and strategy needed for each enemy on higher difficulties.
I liked Dying Light up until the final area. Not sure if I built my character wrong or what but all the enemies seemed to get excessively tanky. That and the abundance of gun-wielding enemies pissed me off and I never finished it.
Wow! Genuinely surprised at your number 1 worst placement. When you mentioned Dying Light I really thought you were doing a fake-out and were gonna say sike, ofc i'm talking about Dying Light 2, but I was really interested to hear your criticism since it's a game near and dear to my heart. I was even more surprised when you said you didn't enjoy a single moment of it, just because there was so much goofy fun that can be had in the gameplay. I haven't watched your full look at the game you posted last year, so i'm gonna watch it. No hate on your opinion, just curious to hear what you think about it more in depth. I do agree on if a game doesn't capture your attention within the initial hours, you shouldn't spend any more time on it, but there are some caveats. That happened to me with Sifu. Spent like 10 hours on the game and dropped it thinking it was kinda meh. But that was because I completely overlooked (and feel like the game didn't stress the importance of) one simple mechanic which was avoiding. Once I realised the effect that had, I was hooked. Not trying to say that's the case with Dying Light for you here, but it's interesting that nothing in the game gelled with you in the slightest.
My biggest problem with god of war 2018 and ragnarok is that they don't have replay value and they have unskipable cutscenes yes god of war3 had those but there weren't as many cutscenes so it wasn't that much of a problem.
I was pleasantly surprised by some of those indy type games. Definitely going to check out that Contra style side scroller action shooter and a few others! I'd buy that for a dollar!
Goes to show how tastes vary. I didn´t care much for signalis. Maybe its just not my kind of game, but the second I realised that it limits the ammo I have (which in it self is fine) all the while respawning enemies i was kinda done with it.
Slay the Spire is a sickness. I already had 112 hours and had taken a break from it, I have been playing it for the past 2 weeks and I now have 141 hours, plus I beat the heart for the first time using the silent.
Cultic is not considered early access. It's considered a complete game that's getting a second chapter. It's weird but that's how it's described by the dev.
Hey Mayo! I think it would be really cool if you talk about God of War Ascension, I've never had the chance to play it but you mentioned in one of your videos that it had great combat so I'm interested to hear your opinion about the game since many people consider it to be the weakest one in the series
I'm gonna recommend Nioh 2 for this year, it's a fast paced souls like from Team NINJA, and one of my favorite games of all time, it's got skippable cutscenes, combos, animation cancels, resource management and a metric shitload of enemies, I really think you'd like it as a fan of Ninja Gaiden
I love Nioh 2 as well, I'm running a splitstaff/fist build and BOY it's fun. However I'm under no illusion that while Mayo would like the combat mechanics, would DESPISE the progression system and loot dependence
I was baffled he tried to call his obvious scam a Game loolll. Like, you really expected people to believe clicking a button and spending money is a game? Lol

Loved that outro!
I thought I was the only one who put Shadow Warrior 3 in my best games of 2022 list/video, glad to know I'm not the only one who enjoyed it this much!
Love the video! Especially the ending. 🤣
100% agreed on GoW part
I actually enjoyed reading the notes in signalis they add more depth to the story and you read and get to know more about the character's and what their backstories are
Blood 2 was the first game I played on my first computer. Upgraded from onboard gpu to a voodoo 2 PCI. I called every friend that owned a console to come and see the graphical fidelity.
the walky talky in AAA games really piss me off
Loved the convo at the end, absolutely perfect way to end the video.
Game recommendation: Furi. It's an isometric action game, centered around bosses. I'm curious what you have to say about it :)
As a practitioner of parkour, i think dying light is amazing!!!!!
Is it possible for you to check out cruelty squad on steam? It's very interesting.......
I have not played many new games this year, but most of them were good. Can't pick out the best of the best this year, so here is the list:
The bad ones:
Great list. Solid choices all around.
Do you play many Metroidvanias?
Mayo doesn't like the genre.
@@theblobconsumes4859 Fair enough.
Thats because he enjoy fps. Its not complicated.
If you were into them, you’d know they’re not “samey” ;)
Under the Mayo makes banger videos always lays out his opinion in layers I appreciate the detail 🙏🏻
*Resident evil 8 quietly slips out the back door*
I would really love to know what you think of Daymare:1998. Thanks for the video. I love your channel a lot. Keep up the good work. And fuck the new God of War games.
plz I'd like a video on postal brain damaged I just started it and there is no content on it. Coming from ultrakill I would like to master the combat
I was not expecting Dying Light to be the worst game that you played on 2022 because I remembered that you played it in 2021. Guess I remembered it wrong. Anyway great video! I always look forward to your best and worst of the year.
"I won't put a good game on the worst list just because I don't like it" - puts God of War Ragnarok
Only partially good.
All the criticisms he mentioned in the video are valid though, I personally loved Ragnarok but it does commit basically every sin of a modern AAA game
Yeah it's cliched as heck and it fumbles but it's still good, like the better Marvel movies
@@Lowbroww anything is better than the mcu lol
@@Shrimp4Life hehe
What's wrong with Murphy? He's definetely not the worst character in SH universe
@@NormanBates3619 homecoming is way worse
I gotta admit I did really enjoy The Callisto Protocol.
Its got some real good horror moments but I’m a horror geek, so that influences it.
Oh boy. I tired dying light for the first time last year in december and man was it boring. The endless tume waste of looting enemies, picklocking boxes, airdrop distractions, crappy weapon durability, weapon swapping system...it goes on and it never gets any better.
GOD I love your skits with Abel so much.
Man how come you aren't playing returnal? Feels right up your alley. Enormous skill ceiling but once conquered, feels amazing a lot like doom eternal.
Here bro love your videos
AWESOME video. Subscribed.
"What if you took Dead Space and made everything worse?"
I don't know, but EA is looking to answer that question real soon.
I liked Dying Light up until the final area. Not sure if I built my character wrong or what but all the enemies seemed to get excessively tanky. That and the abundance of gun-wielding enemies pissed me off and I never finished it.
what do you think of deathwish (BLOOD)?
Great list, gonna try and play Shadow Warrior 3 and Sifu(hope it runs on my laptop)
GOW is up there with my other favs like RDR2 in terms of writing (al though RDR2 is still my thing)
You should Try Fight N Rage. Very well crafted beat emp up.
I wasn't aware that you made an earlier video on Ragnarok, but I already knew it was going on the stinkers XD
Is the guy at the end the same who "reviewed" Dead Space? :D
Sifu is the only game that made me learn how to play blindfolded, just relying on my crappy headphones.
I mostly played Atari 2600 games last year. My favourite is Spider-Man.
The unskipable cutscenes was a problem since the old games that is now fixed with 2018 and on the way in ragnarok
@@thelegandgamer2830 I played god of war 1 on an emulator and you can skip the cutscenes by pressing ○.
@@thelegandgamer2830 I played god of war 1 on an emulator and you can skip the cutscenes by pressing ○.
@@حسنحيدرحازم you didn't play it on the ps2 they were unskipable all the way from gow 1 to gow3
@@thelegandgamer2830 I think they are skipable on the ps2 because the emulator brings the same game from the ps2.
I was pleasantly surprised by some of those indy type games. Definitely going to check out that Contra style side scroller action shooter and a few others! I'd buy that for a dollar!
I hated the first Dying light ,, but love the second one
Goes to show how tastes vary. I didn´t care much for signalis. Maybe its just not my kind of game, but the second I realised that it limits the ammo I have (which in it self is fine) all the while respawning enemies i was kinda done with it.
Nice video, im a bit surprised GoW and dying light are on the bad list but it was a fun watch
Can't wait for Drova: Forsaken Kin to become GOTY 2023 when it's out
I may not always agree with Mayo but his takes are always interesting
Slay the Spire is a sickness. I already had 112 hours and had taken a break from it, I have been playing it for the past 2 weeks and I now have 141 hours, plus I beat the heart for the first time using the silent.
gotta love how abel is always the voice of comments that annoy mayo
Its Signalis for me.
Says no early access, first game is Cultic which literally wasn't even finished at time of posting, nice, A+ video
Cultic is not considered early access. It's considered a complete game that's getting a second chapter. It's weird but that's how it's described by the dev.
Really surprised to not see any mention of Neon White. Maybe next year?
Yeah I haven't played it yet.
Are you used to play real time strategy games like Company of Heroes 2 or Desperados 3
I'm an old C&C man myself.

Hey Mayo! I think it would be really cool if you talk about God of War Ascension, I've never had the chance to play it but you mentioned in one of your videos that it had great combat so I'm interested to hear your opinion about the game since many people consider it to be the weakest one in the series
Yeah i gotta get a way to replay it.
LMAO! Love the ending! Hilarious!
We all know Abel is 2022 UA-camr of the Year
I gotta play sifu it always looked appealing to me but I have just not got around to it yet.
shocking dying light take
I'm gonna recommend Nioh 2 for this year, it's a fast paced souls like from Team NINJA, and one of my favorite games of all time, it's got skippable cutscenes, combos, animation cancels, resource management and a metric shitload of enemies, I really think you'd like it as a fan of Ninja Gaiden
I love Nioh 2 as well, I'm running a splitstaff/fist build and BOY it's fun.
However I'm under no illusion that while Mayo would like the combat mechanics, would DESPISE the progression system and loot dependence
If Mayo liked multiplayer games he would be the biggest r6 creator on youtube
I was baffled he tried to call his obvious scam a Game loolll. Like, you really expected people to believe clicking a button and spending money is a game? Lol
what game is the one with blaze the female character
Streets Of Rage 4
Time stamps for the games?
