The topic about jumping attacks: They used motion capture thing to make all attacks in this game, and the guy who was the actor for the game is a Pak Mei (Southern Kung Fu style) master, this kind os style, southern to be more specific, use a lot of the upper body, and is very "grounded", the style doesn't have acrobatics. So, it's understandable. Even tho they could add more styles I guess.

The music of Sifu is so good that, even when I’m frustrated with my own poor performance (Kuroki beating my ass every time), I’ll still enjoy my experience with the game. The music always manages to convey exactly how the character would be feeling and therefore how the player should be feeling.

On Sifu's parry system and depth: it is also more deep than it seems. There are _two_ parries in combat: "standard" (yellow-ish flash) and "perfect" (red flash with additional effect decals). Perfect parries drain about x1.5 more structure from the enemy than standard ones, and are said to completely negate chip damage from enemy weapons (e.g. Fajar's 2nd phase machete, or Kuroki's 1st phase "dragon staff").
Also it might just be a placebo, but for me perfect parries seem to have better chances to interrupt certain enemy's attack chains than standard parries. ...Speaking of, it adds more chances of "your turn" in boss fights, especially with Yang, making the fights a bit more dynamic. Ironically I noticed it only on Wude run on occasion, wanting to down bosses' structure faster than their health but suddenly finding more opportunities to counter.

white flash is a deflect that mitigates the attack
red flash is a parry which indicates your turn

SIFU is definitely one of the greatest games I've played this generation. I must've ran through it over 20 times. The beginning was rough as hell, unforgiving, and asked a lot of me. But I knew that once I got it, it is such a feel good experience. I don't think the bosses are the peaks of the game, but the game would be worse without them.

On the topic of Animation Cancelling: I think it’s cool when a game has both. Like in the Mad Max game (I’m sure there are other examples, but I don’t play enough video games to know), you can perform a standard punch and cancel it with a dodge. However, if you go in for a heavy attack, you must be sure that it’s worth it because you won’t be able to parry or dodge any attacks which the War Boys throw at you.

Another thing I think they could have done to let you use Focus on Yang (in addition to reducing his stun time from them) is maybe make it so that if you try to use a focus attack on him that you’ve already done before he counters it.
Like once you eye strike him, he won’t get hit by it the second time. But you can still do vertical strikes on him. Once.
This, combined with the reduced stun window from focus attacks would let players use the advantages they have invested in, without letting you full combo the guy with a max focus bar and long beat downs. It would also increase the idea that Yang is a very skilled fighter-you catch him off guard with a move and he very quickly learns to be wary of that attack.

That reminds me of the Mr. Freeze boss fight from Batman Arkham City: the fight is a stealth encounter, and the Arkham games give you lots of different methods to take down enemies in those stealth encounters. In the Mr. Freeze fight, each time you perform a takedown, Freeze will learn that method and won't fall for it again, forcing you to use all the different takedown methods instead of just one or two.

I enjoyed Sifu, but I don’t know whether I’ll ever finish it. I just don’t think I have the reaction speed necessary to play at a reasonably high level. Correctly dodging sweeps is a skill I just couldn’t grasp, and it makes some fights incredibly difficult to do without taking significant damage.
Also, the first phase of the museum boss can die in a fire.

I used to think like you. Thought that the game just wasn't for me at some point. But around 70 hours in, I can even do a no death run. The first phase of Kuroki should just be dodged. It's very easy to just stay away from her attacks. There will be certain attacks that have longer recovery time and that's when you come in and land a heavy attack or two. There's gonna be her rapid vertical spin attack and that can be parried by simply spamming the block button, the timing isn't strict on that one.
But yeah, I hated Kuroki as well. Despised that first phase. The only boss fight where I searched for a guide to beat her. But after her, all the other bosses you can just figure out how to beat yourself. And that just provides a great sense of satisfaction when these boss fights become trivial fights.

I totally agree with your stance on difficulty. As a fan of DMC games I would play on normal to learn combos and mechanics. Then hard for enemy variations, and finally for DMD or Turbo for true exciting fun.
Let players learn mechanics through repetition so it becomes second nature.
Like Dead Space. Shooting limbs is a core mechanic, but did you know that objects in the environment can be used as weapons? Blunt objects can knock enemies over, but sharp objects like broken metal and blades can sever limbs. The game doesnt tell you this, but expects you to experiment because most of your environment has objects you can throw around. It says, "here's the mechanic now go", there are even enemies dedicated to throwing explosives at them to handle them simply, but it isnt explained, but you know what the explosive canisters are. You can see the enemy and then you can see the canister put 2+2 together.

The forcus on parrying , delayed button inputs and uninterruptable animations never felt natural for me. For these types of games Im into much faster, responsive types of games with more varied ways of tackling situations. Looks great.
Ah the camera. I remember when playing NGB at a high level I had to play parts of the game based on sound cues and screen shake, especially when charging UT's which had to be farmed for score in the missions often. I'd be very reluctant to recommend Nioh to Mayo. Nioh 2 is one of my favorite action games of all time and IMO it surpasses ninja gaiden in some places. But it's the kind of game in which a base playthrough will last roughly 70 hours at the VERY least and that's rushing it.
People that tend to love Nioh love its sheer depth and the modularity of skills, soul cores, set bonuses combined with its immensely high skill ceiling. But I don't think Mayo would have the patience to allow those mechanics to burn in before writing the game off. I can picture him clearing out a room of enemies, opening a chest and overthinking as he scrolls through the new loot. Then gets overwhelmed by the skill trees as he gets points for his weapons.
Kinda like how I can see him enjoying Monster Hunter but I'd never recommended it due to the tediousness of early game, the multitude of armor sets and the layers and layers of menus.

I've even watched reviews on UA-cam where the reviewer clearly isn't using avoid at all, because the game just hasn't been explicit enough in telling them about it even though its an essential core mechanic. It's strange that I don't ever remember being frustrated by the camera, even though I've heard lots of people complain about it. I agree with most of what you said especially about dark souls. How I wish games could go back to being faster and more focused on combat gameplay.
But I want to talk about the bosses. Yes I agree that they need a different variety of boss fights. Cuz once you learn them they become easy and predictable. They could've added more enemies to the boss fights or the only way to dodge a move is by jumping over a ledge. Or button prompts to get out of a grab or sticky situation. Etc. What I don't agree with is the final boss which I thought was the best boss fight. The fact you couldn't use focus meter was a game changer. Especially since he was the only one that didn't have a weapon but was considered to be better than all of them. And it was something different from the rest of the bosses.
Something else I wanted to say is they do need more tips. Especially on the skill tree screen. As for making the game easier or changing how the club is, I don't think they should because the game gets easy once you figure out how to play it. Seriously you can beat the game by just dodging and pressing one button when you figure out how to play. You dont even need to unlock anything. So you think a game like that needs to be easier because gamers are too lazy to understand the combat mechanics?? It's about dying and learning. That's the problem with gamers nowadays they don't like dying and starting over. Or they want things to be handed to them.

Inability to use Focus on Yang isn't a "problem" by itself, but it becomes a problem within the overall game flow. In particular, one might drift towards a Focus-oriented playthrough while actively using shortcuts, that will lead to them dumping almost (if not completely) _all_ their shrine upgrades into Focus points and pushing towards Focus attacks, only to find that their playstyle is ruined in the very end and the very climax of the game not by being "bad" or "unusable", but explicitly by the devs putting middle finger in their face.
I did one such Focus-build run on purpose (after Mayo's video on vertical strikes), fully knowing what to expect beforehand, and still has been mildly frustrated by the said "game changer"; imagine what it could do to a novice player who stumble on said build by themselves.
In broad perspective, it's the same so-called-mistake as nullifying all XP put into un-permanented moves: it indirectly punishes the player for investing their time into the game and making certain decisions of which they do not know beforehand, without any in-game hints on these "gotchas".

I hate how "Dark Souls" game design has been heavily incorporated into other developer's games. It's a shitty formula, that is NOT fun. The sad thing is, a lot of gaming morons think people don't like Dark Souls because of the difficulty, which is far from the truth, because the series isn't particularly difficult. The problem is the game design, and especially gameplay, just isn't fun to people who play games specifically for gameplay. Over the years, I've realized that the people who LOVE Dark Souls, are people who aren't "gameplay" gamers. They're the type of people who play a whole lot of RPGs, and love Knights of the Old Republic, GOD OF WAR PS4 and HELLBLADE. Bottomline, you see the games they usually play, and you'll see a pattern of mediocre gameplay design, but heavy emphasis on a storyline or narrative.

Nioh 2 has 12 weapon types with three stances each, low which is fast and low damage, mid has parries and block moves, high stance is slow but high damage best used against opponents out of stamina. Blocking and blockstun can be cancelled with a skill or dodges. Nearly every single animation can be cancelled with a yokai ability to keep momentum, pressure stamina, recover your stam whilst still attacking, or save yourself from a bad situation. I feel that you would enjoy this game in spite of it's various rng elements, Nioh 2 goes on sale fairly often, and it is possible to air juggle.

You do get structure damage in sekiro for parrying but you recover super quick. You can parry all attacks an enemy does without breaking your own structure thus making a deflect obsolete, while the same cannot be said for sifu. Of course it's still your opinion, but I think it's weird to not like sekiro for that reason while the game is so similar to sifu. Did u give sekiro a proper chance?

But damn, those hours of misery made me want a gore mode so bad so I can brutalize these assholes. Even made me have an existential crisis pondering over how worthless my existence is.
It almost felt like a brief encapsulation of the path to mastery. People who are truly masters of certain crafts must have gone through years and years of suffering to finally achieve that mastery, and Sifu somewhat emulates a tiny taste of that. Fitting with its martial arts theme.
The game itself has so many issues which keeps it from being one of my favorite games of all time. Everything is as you mentioned here. That goddamn camera, man. I can't believe that there are people that defend it and include it as part of what you need to get good at in the game.

And the best way to achieve it is for us the players to be familiarized with the whole moveset. I remember beating the club level and feeling so confident in my abilities that I was able to easily breeze through the museum level, especially when I realized that all of the enemies were just variations of stuff I’d already fought. I think being forced to fight the mini bosses on the way up to Sean teaches the player that minor enemies are challenges that have to be overcome just like the boss, and it’s better to force them to practice against everything in the game rather than just master the bosses. Plus, conquering mini bosses often teaches you the skills necessary to beat the final bosses. Just my take

I really agree with the issues you bring up about how the game fails to teach you important mechanics. I gave up on throwing people because every time I tried I just jumped off the ledges myself because I haden't stunned them. I watch so many people play this game and not engage with the avoid mechanic and get owned by Sean just like I did because up to that point I could play it like sekiro and just parry.
Also the boss fights. It's kind of shocking when a game that does group combat so well chose to not have any groups in the boss fights. We all hate gank bosses in souls games but this game would have been great with some ganks. I want to get mobbed during a boss and steal a weapon from the adds and use that against the boss.
I also really have issues with how Kuroki is designed. There seems to be no way to tell if some attacks are low or high, and with how many comboes she does it's just so much better to avoid it altogether and run in later. It's weird cause the next boss has very clear tells before her low attacks. I also feel Sean's low is not well telegraphed enough considering it's a one off and not the end of a combo.

Cause with a parry you're lining up the frames of the guard with the attack. It's more waiting for that specific moment and it's more precise. The input window for avoiding is more forgiving. While in the avoid animation there's a good amount of time to let whatever attack that's coming pass over you. It feels more reactionary to me, whereas parries feel more like waiting for something.
