Building ORCA - Episode 6: Connecting the keel to the forefoot
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 гру 2022
- We're moving right along with the centerline of ORCA and we're also happy to announce that we have picked up the V-Bottom skiff and will be putting her in the water this week for a test run so stay tuned for that!
This week on ORCA, we need to back-up the scarf between our keel and forefoot. To do this we're going to fashion a piece that will span the two other timbers and then be fastened with bronze bolts all the way through to create a strong connection. The rabbit line will then run right through this joint and allow us to set the planking into the keel and forefoot.

Who was surprised when the spanner piece was a perfect fit, first time ? Yeah, thought not…
I could watch Lou stack shelves all day and still be entertained by the way he talks about it. This is UA-cam at it’s very best, there’s no doubting it, what a fabulous project this is going to be - MSM, watch and weep.
I simply cannot wait to see this project unfold over the next few years.
Thanks James, we couldn't be more excited to finally be digging into ORCA, more fun on the way!
This is one time when “a spanner in the works” is a positive thing!
Ryobi needs to give this man an entire set of every tool they make.
Honestly he should contact them if he hasn't, he's does such amazing work with their tools, a credit to him as a craftsman. Not only would they probably happily kit him out, they may sponsor the build.
@@Xelbiuj If he goes to them, he has no leverage. When they come to him, he has all the leverage in the world. Such is the game of sponsorship.
Let's make it happen ;)
they make about 150 different tools
With every new boat I‘m more amazed by the skills this man shows 😳👏🏻👏🏻
Incredible and so instructive, thank you very much for every minute of your time
Wow, thank you!
Such enthusiasm is contagious! Lessons for all aspects of life sprinkled throughout 👏
You did a great job picking that oak: it's gorgeous! Thanks, Lou and crew, for another great episode.
I studied marine carpentry for two years. What I miss is the problem solving. You can feel your brain getting stronger, like a muscle. I would have loved to work in this man's shop. :o)
I’m so pumped about this project, cannot wait to watch it come together!
Thank you for giving us such a detailed lesson on boat building, your knowledge, skills and abilities are first rate.
Always a pleasure watching you. You are a great teacher.
Whoever and however Lou became a UA-cam sensation should receive a medal. The way Lou shares his knowledge, talent, skill, experience, and wisdom is second-to-none.
Thank you Scott!
Nice job Lou ! And look at those medulary rays !!!
Good spot!
Taking half a pencil line away is incredible accuracy to me. Thanks Lou!
I set my phone to blare the amber alert sound when this man posts a new video.
This it the most interesting project to follow. And hello from Finland.
I'm so excited for this project. I love building things and I grew up watching jaws almost everyday. Even grew up on the water. But wood boats are a rarity in Florida.
Right on, Halsey is a huge movie fan so bringing ORCA back to life is going to be pretty special
wood boat in florida.....I wood not
@@garrittp8680 why knot?
Awesome build quality
I am so excited for this project, keep it coming Lou!
Can't lie, I'm waiting to see the V-Bottom in the water! I love you're using a tiller control :)
Hi Brian, we just filmed the V-Bottom sea trials, video coming shortly!!
Nice bandsaw OMGLOL it's huge.
I love how you explain things. Cool to see how much you love what you do.
Thanks Kris
There is always the assumption that power tool work doesn’t require the skill of hand tools, but when I see how good the fit is right off the first planing, I know there is a lot of skill involved.
You're absolutely right Harvey, skill comes with time, especially with power tools!
Looking forward to following this build.
Orca immediately became the #1 wooden boat building project on UA-cam. Even better than Tally Ho or Rediva. Sorry Leo and Garret. Lou is the MAN and Orcas the boat!!
ORCA, Tally Ho and Magic Carpet. I follow them all, every episode.
I’m curious Dwayne. How did you come to that conclusion?
I’m not sure the numbers support your comment.
Dwayne!
Love the language used in boat building * a gripe * and in sailing *scandalizing a gaff* such wonderful language
This series is a gem. Back in the day WGBH would have picked it up and had a salty version of TOH
HES A BEAST Perfect cuts everytime.
Thanks for taking us along!! Really Enjoy your videos!!
Lou's exuberance is contagious!
I’m so happy to here you glamming with this saw!
Nice job...
The very Best there is right there! Thanks Lou, I can't wait to the next episode!
Love the passion
I spent alot of time in that upstairs as a kid. Sanding wood on a huge disk sander, catching skin sometimes lol. My uncle had a reloading machine there also where we reloaded shotgun shells. Great memories.
Amazing - And yes to White Oak!
It's the stuff!
Love it!
Thanks Ray!
I love watching that shipsaw work.
Thanks Don, I've been watching it for years
This is going to be an Epic build, looking forward to the v bottom skiff trial.
Stay tuned V-Bottom sea trials is our next episode!
Lou I think I have watched every video you have posted on UA-cam. Totally inspired me to build my own boat and I have used your instruction many times. I have even tried to document my build to try and help other people just as you are doing. I'm even going to be giving away a set of plans to help someone else. If you are ever in the south, I'd love to have you come by and see what I've been up to. You can see my progress on my channel. Figure it's a long shot, but you miss all the shots you don't take. I think Orca is a great idea and I can't wait to follow along.
That's great to hear Oscar, keep up the building! We'll definitely give you a shout when we make it down that way
Git em.....loving it
Excellent work!!!
Really - this is the best entertainment ever. What a genius lovely likeable man 😎❤️
Thank you Inge!
Howdy Lou and Halsey! Another great one and as much as I love the V-bottom skiff (and still dream about fishing from it) I’m totally into Orca now.
Hi Mark! We just launched the V-Bottom skiff yesterday and got some amazing video, will share that shortly...love you for sticking with us and so happy to have you on board for ORCA!!
Looking good. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Cant wait
Awesome sir...
That spanner is going to make it tougher than______!
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Love your work!
Thank you!
Lou, far from me to tell you how to use your saw, but you might want to adjust the rear roller guide a bit forward. It looks like the blade’s teeth hit the side guides when you feed the wood in as evidenced by the sparks. As you know, that’ll dull it pretty quick. My first job after being trained as a Navy shipwright was to cut oak planks for the old wooden hull minesweepers on an old re-saw bandsaw about that size.
Love you work!
Thank you!
Good Job Lou, great educated video as always. looking forward as always to the next video as well. God bless bro.
Thanks Fon we're gonna keep 'em coming!
Thanks Louis for the New built just wish your produced would Make them longer so we Can learn more and see more of your Work being Done. Happy Holidays.
We'll do what we can!
my god brilliant
How old is that ship saw? A beautiful machine.
Thanks Cody, someday it'll be a 100 years old ;)
Hi Louis, love your skills and knowledge, a true Master Craftsman.
How long will this project take in your wise opinion please?
Many thanks 🙂

Cool to see a new series. But this I miss the finalisation of the v bottom skiff?
You haven't missed anything, final V-Bottom skiff episode coming this week!
@@TipsfromaShipwrightvideos awesome! Can barely wait!
This is so educational as well as entertaining! I need to replace a bad wooden add on keel that was mahogany wood put on a groverbuilt 26' boat many years ago and is now rotted. I have been told I should use mahogany again or brazilian oak as a replacement. The boat is fiberglass with stern having a fiberglass keel and this keel bolted from it to bow area 2 1/2" wide, maximium of 6" tall tapering to only 2 1/2" tall where it stops shy of bow and wood keel addition is total of 20' 6" length. Can I use white oak and make it in two sections scarfed like this one instead of mahogany? Does anyone know if I should or not? Any help much appreciated!
8:39 - spark! what's in that wood right there?
It was just a quick spark from the back of the blade touching the steel wheel behind it, no big deal nothing in the wood
Second
"Second place is the first loser" 🤣
You can tell that an electric plane is well used by the amount of tape on the power cord!
We need more tape over here ;)
How big is “Orca” gonna be ???
She's going to be 40 feet long plus the bow pulpit, it's a big boat!
Great teacher! One of my favourite channel. Thanks! Many of your advice is already in my boat @craftendra 😀
Great to hear!
First
Any ideas as to how fast the blade is running to get a cut that nice?
Fast
That forefoot construction is clearly seen in a 200yr old preserved boat at the Windermere Steam Launch museum ua-cam.com/video/4-hzaNosX9A/v-deo.html
Will check it out, thx
I wonder if Richard Dreyfus would be interested enough to get involved in this project?
That would be too cool for words!
Dear Lou, why not use glue along with the mechanical connections?
Makes it near impossible to replace a part when the inevitable rot sets in.
Also gluing oak is pointless. The wood expands and contracts so vividly, the glue couldn't keep up.
This is the keel we are talking about, gentlemen. The very backbone of the ship. You want it to be "one" strong piece. Mechanical connections loosen over time due to the flexing of the timbers. I would be more interested in hearing what Lou has to say.
@@brutusbarnabus8098 The keel isn't done yet, so hopefully this will get answered.
We won't glue it because it won't hold but we will bed it when connect the joints.
