Building ORCA - Episode 5: Assembling the center-line
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 гру 2022
- This week on ORCA we're assembling our center-line, composed of the keel, forefoot and stem. All this lumber is quarter sawn 6"x6" white oak, so it's incredibly strong and that's what we want for these pieces, especially below the waterline.
Today we need to connect and create the scarf joint between the front of the keel and forefoot. We're going to have to plunge cut with our skill saw which is a very technical cut, so we have to set up a backing block to put the saw against as we plunge, well as a guide to follow the line. We're going to make two deep 3" cuts on each side in order to get all the way through the 6" timbers.

I love Lou's "stream of consciousness" narration.
@@banjopete Ya...That too. LOL
I’m so excited about this. Not because of a movie, only because I get to see Lou work his magic on a big boat. 👍🇺🇸✌️
Same here! This man is a true craftsman!
I’m very happy to see Lou starting to lay the keel. I grew up watching my grandfather building lots of inshore Novi’s in Shad Bay, Nova Scotia. He was a self taught wooden boat builder and fisherman. I own the last one he built for himself in 1991. A 24ft x 9ft lobster boat with the keel ending 6 feet short of the stern. It will turn in its own length. It’s a family treasure now that he’s gone and my pride and joy.
It's always magical to see the very beginning of a boat build and realize soon enough, there will be an entire boat wrapped around this single timber. Definitely humbles a man.
No way. Finally, we get the great shipwright on a ship. Can't wait until the next video.
What a lesson Lou is giving us in each of is video … simple man, simple tools, real all american working force, but … giant craftmanship with astronomical experience in ship building and a power and will to do big stuff. I’m Listening each words as if it was some kind of a Renaissance Inventor… great man, amazing craftman, all american legacy.
Thank you for the kind words Charles, I do love teaching and try to keep it entertaining too!
I just love the way that the information comes across, from a voice full of character.I am thoroughly enjoying the channel.Roly🇬🇧.
Lou getting excited is the most wholesome thing ever. To have this energy at his age is something to be commendable. If i'd have an ounce of his enthusiasm at my age, i'd be more than happy. A lot of us here live vicariously through his excitement. :)
Can't wait to see the keel get stood up. That will be a real milestone in the early construction. The laying of the keel on any boat is always exciting. Can't wait to see the sawdust fly!!
Yes, more big fun to come!
The level of craftsmanship is so fun to see. I bet you've forgotten more about woodworking than I'll ever know.
It is exciting to see these timbers come together. Watching Lou giving shape to each one is like seeing Orca being born.
The amount of hand labor, skilled, that goes into a woodenboat puts glass to shame. Enjoy
Lou is a national treasure.
The scale of this is so much bigger than I realised, what a project 🤩
I remember as a kid in Summerville, in Bonavista Bay in nfld, we'd see boat's familiar to this type being hauled up on the beach to have work done on them then now and then, or we'd see them freshly built and being launched in the water. Know wonder your excited Lou this boat is going to be incredible little trawler when its finished. Now you'll be able to go out fishing or do a bit of trawling for shrimp who knows? or just simple go for a cruise. lol
I wish there was a film made of those old boats being made or repaired or just featured, Its very hard to find good info on old maritime Canadian boats.
It's great to see you working on another project Lou, especially the Orca... Jaws is my all-time favorite movie... Wish I lived in your neighborhood, I'd love to give you a hand on the boat.
This project is great and it is timed perfectly for the project our small boat shop is currently undertaking...the building of a replica of a 1776 whaleboat used in the Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary War. Our backbone timbers are about 50% smaller than Orca's but the methods and techniques for fabricating will be the same. Thank you Louis for taking on this project. Your insights and videos will be invaluable during this build.
Hi John, we may be making a trip down to see you guys April :)
I've been wanting to see someone build orca since I was a little kid
That is going to be a big boat to make out of wood!
They build far bigger exactly the same way, but yeah it’s a big job, reckon this is gonna be the next few years of the channel.
Such a pleasure to watch a master craftsman at work. Love the videos x
I have anxiously awaited this build since you first announced it. I won't miss a single installment. This will be great. Thanks for the experience.
Master Shipwright at work....what a treasure to watch Orca come together...thank you
I've been waiting on Orca for sure, but I also want to see the finished V-Bottom Skiff. It's not done until we see it on the water. Love and respect.
I have been looking forward to this build for weeks now. Even though it has been going for a few weeks now as an idea, once you cut wood, it feels like it really started. Thanks for all the great videos.
This build is going to be fun to watch. V bottom skiff on steroids!
Finally a boat a man can live aboard.
So excited to for this, Lou!
All of these videos need to be archived for historical reference.
A real treasure to watch you at work Lou!
Thanks for sharing the details Lou. This is going to be a great build. The anticipation for each new episode is hitting an all-time high!
Your enthusiasm for this build is extremely contagious Lou. That is some beautiful timber and is a great beginning for what will eventually be a beautiful boat. Thank you for sharing the adventure.
This is great! The Greeks in Fernandina and St.Augustine Fl would “notch” the bow with a series of interlocking dovetails on large wooden boats.
great to see a craftsman at work.
Hooray for Lou! From another native Rhode Islander who gets excited about boats.
Holy crap, that thing is HUGE!!!!
That is going to be one massive boat. That keel is looking very nice and you have just started on it
I'm sure you will, but please don't forget to show us the finished v-bottom skiff in all its motoring glory!
I finally realized it’s a fore foot piece not a four foot piece. Have to say I absolutely love your excitement and this channel. Looking forward to watching you bring her all together.
This orca built is going to be great content to watch. Can you give us an update on the V bottom skiff,is there more coming 👍

:)
I am so excited about this project. Thank you for shari g it. It’s a dream to build my own boat and im totally freaked out that im gunna mess it up. So this helps more than you know!
Damn ! I just caught myself trying to blow the sawdust away so I could see the line !
Love the open saw guard, I'm from that school.
Awesome. Thank you, Lou.
I am going to set out and do it and not stop until it is done.
I am going to quote you on that.
Going to enjoy your craftsmanship.
Thank you so much for bringing this dream alive....
this is going to be a great build great job
Thank you.
Ryobi needs to sponsor you Lou! You really put those tools through their paces.
I have often used wedges to keep the set from pinching the saw. The key is not to drive them in, but to push them in snug and STOP!!
I’m excited right there with ya, Lou!
Wow, what a project. Can't wait for each episode.
Wow . Looking good sir, I will be watching the updates on this .. 😀
Looking forward to this one!
Lou, love this build, but are we going to see the v bottom skiff splashed?
This will be great!
Love this serie vids!!
enjoy a lot your videos! congratulations. Un abrazo...
Think big!
So F*^king cool. I can't wait for the next episode. Thanks Lou
Love your tool mods, Lou. That Milwaukee has seen some shit, haha.
I just stumbled upon a video, it was about 'trail marker trees', many are old, starting to get diseased, or being cleared for road building etc
Basically the trees have been bent towards the ground for a bit, then allowed to grow normally, creating a bend.
I'm thinking if your timber supplier can get hold of them, they might make great knees
We're not gonna need a bigger boat!
I’m excited! Thanks Lou!
Loving it!
Nice start
cheers! as always a great video
Lets go im excited for what's coming
