Very Marshall type sound in a tiny package - great for us bedroom axe warriors ! With so many choices around including modelling amps I can't help but feel that a back to basics setup forces people to concentrate on learning how to get the sounds they want from their fingers rather than continually playing with software and controls. Shame it does not work for those like me with a lack of talent :) .
man talent will only get you so far, the true guitar legends got to where they are through constant practice and perseverance. you've got this, just keep on chuggin
This. I got my first amp second hand. Its a Vox VT20+ It has so many controls and sound si spend more time messing around with it than playing. Thats why I'm here looking at this amp
Same boat! I correct people who call me a player and stress that I am a "practicer". I want a small tube amp but am having trouble finding one in my budget so i'm watching this video. I don't want a lab experiment like Katana (the store guy is pushing it on me). Might use an overdrive pedal with this but otherwise just me and the guitar. Also, wife works at home (permanent now0 so I have to keep it down. Small amps for me. Obviously, I won't need gig volume.
Well said. "I can't help but feel that a back to basics setup forces people to concentrate on learning how to get the sounds they want from their fingers rather than continually playing with software and controls". I just bought this amp for my Granddaughter for exactly that reason, Played 3 other amps in the shop and as soon as I plugged this in I knew that's what I was looking for.
I just bought one of these..Its a big sound in a small simple package..after studying alot of small amps really never thought I would buy a Marshall but this one is a winner..Thanks for the review Shane....
You are pretty much the only person I've found on UA-cam who actually did this amp justice. EDIT: I ended up buying one and I absolutely love it. It's surprisingly versatile, sounds amazing on clean, etc etc. I may eventually do a review myself if I can find the time/energy
I and my friends used to make fun of these for sounding terrible, based on the number of kids butchering "Iron Man" and "Smoke on the Water" on these in guitar shops. In hindsight, the problem may have been the kids... It sounds positively massive when you play it! Great demo!
From Leo: I have an MG 15 DFX from a few years back. The little speaker really holds the amp back. I added a speaker jack that cuts out the internal speaker when plugging in an remote 8 ohm speaker. It is pretty impressive when the amp is hooked to a quality 12 inch cabinet. I do not love everything in the MG line, but they got the little 15 watt amplifier right.
Sounds absolutely fine to me. I have an older MG15 DFX which I really like. There's just something about it. I think guitar players are spoilt these days with the choice of amplification, but I think there's alot to be said for a straightforward solid state amp with simple controls.
Y'know, even if it's a piece of gear I'm not really interested in, I always have to check out your reviews and demos, Shane. They just are so well done and sound so good. You really are a great resource for us out in the gear searching world, You really have a knack for how to make these things right! Thanks for all you do!
A Marshall MG15 was my first amp, I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with the drive channel over the many years I've owned but it was a really solid clean channel and takes pedals well, plus my one has a real spring reverb unit in which blows my mind these days considering how many amp companies won't even put a real spring reverb in their higher end stuff.
sounds better then it should. I need a new Practise amp and this seems to be inthe top 5 right now. Thank You for all the hard work in making the videos. they are super helpful. Be safe!
Marshall is still my favourite clean tone. I have a Peavey Bandit but can't quite get that Marshall twang on it. Any chance you could do and MG vs. small DSL comparison? Would be great to hear how they compare. Thanks for all the great demos.
They are a great little amp, powerful for their size & as robust as they come. I've actually had one for much longer than I've been a guitarist (I bought my first guitar for Xmas) You see, they also make a better-than-acceptable harmonica amp with the right mic... I love mine!
A good trick with these cheap solid state Marshalls is to disconnect the speaker and hook it up to some good speakers! Still, these MGs sound much better than the one I bought for practice like 15 years ago. There's a recognizable 'plexiness" to the tone!
Hey, they gota "Marshall MG15GFX 1x8" 15-watt Combo Amp w/ Effects" for $169.99 now (separate delay and reverb and more), looks like a very interesting starter Amp!
I picked up one of these after watching your review is a great amp. There is a guy that did a speaker swap on youtube for this model and it had a reverb tank inside mounted to the bottom even though its specs are digital
I bought a CODE 25 a few months ago to be my practice amp, if I had seen this review before then I may have considered the MG instead. Good, fair review.
I have an MG15CDR that I bought years ago when the power switch was still square and not round. Very good amp. It also has an FDD button that made it more dynamic. When I dialed it in to my liking by lowering the treble and gain a bit. Sounds pretty sweet.
Thanks for your reviews mate. Great playing. I was looking at an Origin 5 but this sounds so much better... Can't believe it but it's true. Ordered and coming tomorrow!! 👍😄
Great amp for at home, you demonstrated that you can have the best of both worlds with gritty crunch and clean tones, Good review of a very good 15 w amp
Couldn’t help going back to that gain channel one more time with your Tele, eh? I don’t blame you. Sounds awesome. That Marshall sound is so unique that it’s probably worth the money to have it around, especially in such a small package. Trying to decide between this and the Orange Crush 20RT and any others I can find in the non-modeling category for under $200.
I bought this amp a little over a month ago.......without reverb though because, it was cheaper. Haha. I do love this amp though. Very impressed by the power it has, from a small amp!! Excellent review!!
I kept my MG15CFX. Despite all the hate online, it really isn't a bad amp once the speaker is broken in and you learn how to dial in some basic tones. Mine let you have reverb plus one other effect either Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Delay, Octave. So it was quite versatile even without pedals. I sometimes wonder if an upgraded speaker would have improved it, one of those 10" greenbacks might have fit in the largish cabinet. Quite a lot of stigma on these amps, but I think there is a reason why they haven't been discontinued with the arrival of newer Marshalls. They really aren't that bad for practice, good even, if you don't mind only having 4 presets in the case of the FX version.
Sounds like a great little practice amp and at a very affordable price. Something about solid state distortion that has a top end fuzz to me. Sounds very square wavish or maybe I'm just hearing things. Great review as always Shane!
well it op amp and diode distortion. op amp very high fi chips which lack the miller effect. the miller effect which fets and tubes do round off a square wave. how ever a tube amp will sound solid statish if it is a high gain amp.
Getting my son an Ibanez RG6003FM Electric Guitar, I was looking for an amp to go with it, this Marshall looks great for him a small practice amp, any thoughts on this combo, he is a beginner (only has played acoustic up to this point but is asking for an electric for Christmas)
I like your video, Shane. not everybody needs or wants a Big Stack...A nice simple plug and play practice amp that says "Marshall" on it for a living room rock star. I want to check it out, Thanx for the demo!!!!
This was almost my exact rig a few months ago, and I found it perfect as a starter pack ! Super versatile and trusty. You've got enough to play whatever you want with a pretty good sound. The Squier is very well built and comfortable to play, while the amp has just what you need to begin and learn, with the coolest look and sound you can get at this price. The audio input and headphone output are awesome for bedroom playing, they don't sound very good but they're playable. I have the MG15FX version with some built in effects (chorus, delay etc.), and 4 channels (clean, crunch and 2 overdrive levels). Not much more expensive but you can control the distortion much better than the basic 2-channel and its brutal gain. Both the guitar and amp are definitely benchmarks in their price range, so if that's your taste go for it ;)
Last week I opened it and found that it actually has a small plastic spring reverb tank, not a digital one on PCB, so be careful with handling because I had some problems with squealing in the past because one spring fell off from the tank. Anyway it sounds more pleasant to me compared to a digital reverb in a friend's Boss amplifier.
I like it ! As a matter of fact I actually have the 15 watts mini full stack Marshall MG15 with 2X10 cabinets and it kicks out the tones pretty good for basement jam sessions or practice or what ever ! Cool little amp on its own but swap out the stock speakers for Eminence legends ! Inexpensive speakers that sounds really REALLY good !
Does it crank when you turn the clean knob up? I’m planning on selling my MG15CFX as I don’t use the built in effects, and I rely on amp style pedals for my dirt. I’m thinking either MG 15 or the origin 5. Origin 5 has a GREAT AC/DC tone, and having a low watt option would help when mom and dad go to bed, lol
I wish Marshall would come out with an amp that just had volume, gain, bass, treble, mid ,reverb and an fx loop in 50 watts so I could use my own pedals I had one of their build in fx amps and I hated it . Just a simple amp like this one so I can put my own sound on it they could even make it in 25 and 30 watts
I've got the other practice amp version: g80rcd. Yeah, it's got more knobs, a 12" speaker, and a bit more headroom. Doesn't come with Aussie accent, though. If you play a Chinese guitar, does it have an accent?
This amp is spectacular. If you're looking for a joe walsh/jimmy page sound, and you only have $80, you can get one of these used and even your strat will do. The sound quality completely blows my fender amp under the water for half the price
This one has a Middle knob instead of Contour (Mid-cut) - people probably aren't fans of the reverse midrange knob. Definitely has that cutting Marshall sound...it sounds decent on my pc with good quality Sennhiesers. Yes, I still use a computer LOL.
Hi! One question! I just bought uno of these and it has a "rain noise" when I pull up the volume (it´s not a cable or guitar problem, cause I try plugging diferent cables and guitars!). It´s in the two channels the same (clean and dirty). Is it a normal back noise or I might change the amplifier? Thanks!!
These amps have gotten a raw deal over the years... mainly due to 2 things - 1) the crappy speakers the manufacturer sticks in the low-priced product, and 2) since they are usually owned by beginners due to the low cost, they obviously don't know how to dial in an amp worth a shit(and are probably using a lower priced guitar as well)! An advanced player, in this case Shane, has no problem getting a perfectly decent sound out of the line. If it sounds good, it is.
Just as well this is a really positive revue 'cause I bought one yesterday, before I saw your vid. You may well ask "why is this idiot looking at the revue after buying the amp?" Yeah, you'd be answering your own question there! Thanks fella.
Is the overdrive channel meant to replicate the sound of a classic Marshall? The clean channel sounds much more neutral. The clean and distorted channels have very different EQ profiles.
I have marshal mg15 amp and its sound great But everytime when i play with reverb mode it gave a loud beep sound I don't know if its a technical fault or what Can you tell me why?
Great video. Cheers just got one today to practice with. But got a 2*12 Marshall Origin and 50w valve head amp Marshall Origin as well for when I make the band 😎👍 Marshall is artwork IMO just like a cool chair or painting.
Thanks for the video! You got that sound from just going straight from guitar to the amp? That's exactly the sound I am looking for. I don't have a Les Paul, but my Strat will do. Thanks again!
Nice review 👍🏻 I am playing over 2 Decades Electric Guitars, had a lot of Amps but Marshall was always my first joice. My MG 50 is over 10 Years old and kicks Ass on and on....my Marshall Tube Amps a bit more, but there"s no hugh difference. Only in the price. My new MG 30 has more depht and this..whoooom ....than my Marshall 30 Watt full tube.
Hey Shane, I just got myself a DSL40CR and I am super impressed with it. The only thing is that it’s bottom end is super intense (my whole room shakes at normal volumes :D). What is your EQ settings on the clean channel and how do you tame it’s bass? Thanks!!!
Undoubtedly an amazing amp.. My Marshall 10W has a line out.. can the headphone jack be used as as line out if connected to a 1/4'' Jack to the PA system / mixer?
Hi, I got the same amp MG15R and i can't turn up the clean volume past 2 and the same for the overdrive because It hisses like a Beast, no hum . What can be done? I saw you put the volume at 8 . Mine must be repared but I want to know what could be the problem. I bought It new on the Net. For the price it's worth but the strong hiss means that something Is wrong!!! Thanks
hello i have the mg15r and i play with my friends in my basement when i have my gain to the max it has this extreme buzz even with my guitar volume lower i cant get rid of the buzz and what ive noticed is that my friend who has an open back amp with a 6 inch speaker 10W sounsd louder than my 8 inch speaker 15W can someone help me understand how and why this happens
Hey, Just bought one of these and bit concerned as there’s something rattling around inside loose when I pick up the amp and turn it side ways. Wouldn’t of thought this is normal. Wondering if it was dropped during transit through post.
It sounds like a screw might of come loose or something. If it sounds like a cable on the cabinet it's no big deal but if it's loose like a screw, send it back and exchange it. :)
Shane, you have been doing a lot of small amp reviews which is awesome... does sky music have any Yamaha thr amps? That’s the amp I’m most interested on your take of. It’s supposed to be the best practice amp according to many
Can you get a lot of distortion while keeping it quiet or do you need headphones to play metal without giving your family a heart attack? (I play in my bedroom)
Amit Sapir one is a modeler, the other is a single amp. If you will be happy with just the Marshall sound, this is it. If you want to experiment with other amps, then the mustang is great. I have a Mustang V2 100 and it is pretty awesome. But i think the Marshall DSL and the MG here nail the Marshall sound better than the mustang. If you want high gain, you may want something other than the Mustang.
I’ve been playing guitar for about a year with a super small amp. I’m looking to get a bigger one for cheap, and rn this is on sale for $80 on Amazon (assuming the guitar community doesn’t have anything against buying amps off of Amazon). Should I get it?

Had been using mg 15 for years now however its got really 80's sound for more gain and distortion you have to use effect pedals to get most of it.

P.S. the guitarist aint bad either ;)
Sweet and warm little amp that shines best on the gain + is reverb just great - that Tokai rocks
Mind blown. Will be getting this at some point. Thanks for the review!
I just bought this amp. Love it.
Sounds better than an earlier model I had years ago, but still prefer my Code 25 for its versatility.
I had one of these back in the 2000's. Pretty decent amp for the dinero.
I own this amp for nearly 20 years i never increase the "dirty" volume above 2. Nice to hear how it sounds!! :)
That clean tone with the telecaster sounds really Hendrix :)
I bought a CODE 25 a few months ago to be my practice amp, if I had seen this review before then I may have considered the MG instead. Good, fair review.
Funny i owned both code 50 and MG15FX. Actually sold the code and kept this beast.
The new mg50 vs fender champion 40 would be cool! great review as always , Shane!

Is the overdrive channel meant to replicate the sound of a classic Marshall? The clean channel sounds much more neutral. The clean and distorted channels have very different EQ profiles.
Great review, just wondering if the sound is coming directly from the guitar to the amp or you were using some other pedals or external effect?
I have marshal mg15 amp and its sound great
But everytime when i play with reverb mode it gave a loud beep sound
I don't know if its a technical fault or what
Can you tell me why?
Same happens with my newly bought marshall amp, when i twist the reverb on it take no effect at all, other than humm
@@nowellpaulgantala8175 even i am facing the same issue with my newly bought Marshall amp. Did you get any clue on this one ?
I have one in my living room. I love!
What is better marshall mg15 or orange crush 12
Thanks!!!
Have you got that beautiful distortion just out that amp, mate? No depals?
Undoubtedly an amazing amp.. My Marshall 10W has a line out.. can the headphone jack be used as as line out if connected to a 1/4'' Jack to the PA system / mixer?
Hello sir 😊 what is the difference of mg15r cd ??
Great practice amp, well done Marshall
este chabon hace sonar todo lo que toca bien
Hi, I got the same amp MG15R and i can't turn up the clean volume past 2 and the same for the overdrive because It hisses like a Beast, no hum . What can be done? I saw you put the volume at 8 . Mine must be repared but I want to know what could be the problem. I bought It new on the Net. For the price it's worth but the strong hiss means that something Is wrong!!! Thanks
Just wondering: is enough this amp for making a feedback??? It would be possibile???
Thanks in advance for the answer. Keep up the good work!
Not a patch on the Fender Champion 20 👍
Just got one and love it...
hello i have the mg15r and i play with my friends in my basement when i have my gain to the max it has this extreme buzz even with my guitar volume lower i cant get rid of the buzz and what ive noticed is that my friend who has an open back amp with a 6 inch speaker 10W sounsd louder than my 8 inch speaker 15W can someone help me understand how and why this happens
Hey,
Just bought one of these and bit concerned as there’s something rattling around inside loose when I pick up the amp and turn it side ways.
First comment !
Great Shane as usual. Thanks
Thanks Andrea! 😄
Thanks!
the question is, would you prefer it over Fender mustang 20 II?
Amit Sapir one is a modeler, the other is a single amp. If you will be happy with just the Marshall sound, this is it. If you want to experiment with other amps, then the mustang is great. I have a Mustang V2 100 and it is pretty awesome. But i think the Marshall DSL and the MG here nail the Marshall sound better than the mustang. If you want high gain, you may want something other than the Mustang.
Not bad at all. A great comparison would be a similar powered MG to your dsl40
I’ve been playing guitar for about a year with a super small amp. I’m looking to get a bigger one for cheap, and rn this is on sale for $80 on Amazon (assuming the guitar community doesn’t have anything against buying amps off of Amazon). Should I get it?
so im gonna be getting this amp idk if i should get an overdrive pedal or a distortion pedal to make it song more like 80s glam metal/rock
Sounds like a good little practice amp!
