Little late to this video but I played unplugged for years as a bedroom guitarist because the people at home hated it. Then once when I started playing with Gain I sounded terrible, like I just picked up the instrument. Especially for my main stuff being metal and lead I couldn’t mute anything the notes didn’t ring out and overall I had no feel for it. Then I talked to a few people better that me that told that playing with high gain on bridge pickup is difficult and amplifies every mistake. So now I’m trying to clean up my technique and get good at this now.

Positive Grid Spark Amplifier I owned for about a month ,and sold it yesterday because I don't like the way sound comes out of the speakers.. The best part of it is the use of the Blu"tooth , but mine always took a lot of time to sign on, and too much messing online and not enough playing. . It just has that cheap beginners Amp sound to it. I know a lot of you guy's have them, and love them, but I never connected with it. I have to admit though I owned a Fractal Axe Effects 2 for awhile unfortunately it had to go do to COVID19, and my job getting cut because we worked with Special needs kids in school. .. When all returns to normal I'm thinking Rev Amps G20 lunchbox, or Fractal Axe Effects 3 with 2 FRFR speaker cabinets.... Nothing wrong with picking up a decent acoustic guitar to practice on as well.☺. Gets those fingertips in shape faster too.😁🎸

I've got the special green one with the 103 ext cab and power supply. I only paid 89.99 for the whole setup NIB. Making it a 6 w amp. I use it 99% of the time for my stereo sound for the TV when not using it to jam. MY wife loves, as do I the great clean sound the speakers put out. She doesn't so much love how hard this little boogerwill jam if you want to. Lol it's hard to beat for the money, and hard to beat in general for low volume amp with gobs of tone without rattling pictures off of the wall. It out performs a lot of other intro combos out there. I had a VOX valvetronix 20 watt tube amp with way too much crap to dial in. This Fly3 w/ ext cab blows it out if the water ( let me stress, for a home practice amp, the VOX VT 20 could gig). Fly3 can fill a 12x12 rm so easily and with easy to use controls. You can be unplugged to jamming in 45 seconds. Way underrated.

I have played my electrics unplugged for 50 years. That DOESN’T mean that I always play it unplugged, which some of the responders seems to think that is what it means. The best place to play is in the bathroom with many hard surfaces. You get a tiny hint of reverb, the guitar sounds loud plus you would be surprised at how great a good, resonate electric sounds unplugged. I play my electrics mostly unplugged these days. Back in my band days it was mostly plugged as I was deciphering songs, at band rehearsal or playing clubs. A few of my guitars sound so good unplugged that it is frustrating to not be able to duplicate the tone through the pick ups.

Otherwise you have just stumped up for a very expensive set of headphones. Also make sure you can deal with the Giro Drift if they have not corrected it. Becomes very annoying very quickly especially when you are sat down to practice. Had the Yamaha for a while now and it’s great. Rob, way long time ago when I was still a teenager and starting out with the guitar, I played with no amp for over a year. I think it was more like two! This was back in the 70s, when inexpensive ANYTHING guitar-related was either non-existent or pure trash. I loved the guitar very well to have put up with having no amp, trying to play strings that were heavy enough to use on an acoustic(!), and of course the pain that all beginning guitarists feel until they grow calluses thick enough to serve. Whereas I have no plans to go amp-less during practice, I recognize that your suggestion has merit in another arena: Setup! Playing without an amp will help to expose weaknesses ... not only the player's, but the guitar's as well. This could be critical when planning or assessing the effects of an adjustment. You won't have the amp's output obscuring fret buzz and other noises that might need adjusting out. Thanks for this vid and for the suggestion!😎❤️️🎸‼️

I know I will not be popular saying this, but practicing your musical technique on an acoustic guitar gives you an advantage; when i put out a video stating this Captain Lee scoffed at the idea (he made an oblique reference to this, it was about 2 years ago) but I can say after playing since 1971 acoustic guitar practice enables you to build finger strength and it all seems much easier when you come back to your electric. Anyway, whatever works for you.

Just about any recent amp-sim through a pair of affordable studio-monitors is fine for home/practise use. Another option for those who already have one or more great tube amps is to use that into a loadbox with cab-sim into monitors, for example a UA OX. Granted, the OX ain't cheap, but not so bad considering what you've already spent if you're playing boutique-amps. With it you can use whatever pedals and gear you otherwise use with your band or on stage.

Of course, the real advantage of the Waza headphones is NOT that your babies will not be awakened, but that YOU won't hear them wailing away so it's up to your significant other to handle that. Kidding, of course...

Have only watched the first minute and 15 seconds. Completely agree. Just plain practicality. I still do it now - I'll be doing scales and stuff whilst watching UA-cam lol. Honestly it started back in the day, as a way to practice without anyone complaining. As I got better though, I learned that no matter how good you are, nobody wants to hear you practicing 4 particularly difficult bars in a solo or a tough riff over and over again.
An extension of this is amplifier + headphones, of course. But as the guy in the video states - there's something to be said for practicing with your electric guitar unplugged. You hear every little fret buzz (if you're not watching UA-cam at the same time lol).
As a sidenote, I consider the natural acoustic resonance of ANY guitar (even a solid body electric) to be the biggest key indicator of how good the guitar is, along with having a straight neck and level frets. Everything else is solvable with a setup, and if things are really bad - that odd hardware upgrade. My LP sounds pretty big unplugged, to the point where some people have been like "OMG how is it that loud not plugged into anything?"
Trust me. Take two Strats. One's cheap, one's a genuine Fender. In this hypothetical example, the cheap copy is louder unplugged than the Fender. If in this unlikely scenario, with a hardware + electronics upgrade to match the Fender, the cheap Strat would end up sounding bigger/better. Think about it - you can play around with electronics for higher output and greater sustain, but there's no greater source for those things than.. the source for those things ;-)

Guitar straight into audio interface into computer running neural dsp plugins in my daw and monitoring through open backed headphones is what I use. It would save that problem of loosing riffs and the open backed head phones give you that "in the room" feel. Although they are louder to those around you because of the open back and if I have them maxed out in volume sometimes my wife tells me it's too loud. For anyone looking to get into this rig, I'm gonna assume you already have a decent computer(it doesn't take much). A decent audio interface is around $100(you can get bundles with a mic, headphones, and daw for like $200ish). Neural plugins are around $100 to $200 depending on how many amps it has. You can get cheaper plugins, but I think it's worth forking out the little extra cash on neural stuff. A lot of amp sims have the sound of a real amp, but imo none have mastered the feel of a real amp like neural. Open backed headphones are nice but around $150. Regular ones that would come with a bundle would be just fine until you wanna upgrade. So for about $300 to $350 you can be silent recording and getting some great guitar tones. It takes a little bit of research like learning how to get around latency by adjusting buffer size, but it's not that much work considering what you're getting.

I'd also add something like a Marshall Origin 5 or DSL1 as a way of getting into valve amps at a budget entry price. Playing an electric guitar unplugged is gold for learning picking dynamics, and of course proper fretting.

  • @jefferson4245
    @jefferson4245 3 роки тому

Not plugging in the electric guitar forces you to listen more closely to a couple of things: the way you fret the strings, and the clarity of the notes you're playing. That clarity directly impacts your sound when you plug in. It sounds better when electrified because you're starting off getting the most out of the strings, neck & fretboard, and your own hands and fingers. The pickups, pedals, and amp are going to do what they do regardless, but *you* can get more out of them by improving they way you actually play your instrument. You're not hiding behind gain and signal path. You're getting to the point you can exploit them to greater effect.

Hey Rob, nice video! So... About the first "practice amp"...
For lack of better financial conditions, I had to start practice playing guitar without an amp for about 1/1.5 years - maybe more. The thing is that, after that time, I just could not strum ANY guitar without applying too much force on the strings (which I think is something you do naturally to play louder without any amp).
It's been more than 6 years since then and I still kinda think it would be nice to not always strum my acoustic like I am playing my electric in my room without an amp anymore.
So, yes... It is controversial, indeed :)

I liked my Line 6 XP Pro with aux input and headphones until it died maybe 10 years later. I loved the virtual changing amp, cabs, mics and miv positions until it died one day. A few years ago, to practice bass (my main thing), I'd set the board to clean, use the aux and headphone out pushed by a TECH 21 VT Bass Deluxe to push the bass. I'm now retiring a BOSS GT-100 board, which was not nearly as virtual. I'd still set it to clean and use my VT Bass. I just got and set up a Marshall CODE50, which is also virtual, and controlled from my cell phone. We'll see. For real gigs I have a MarkBass Little Mark Tube 800, a front vented MarkBass 4 x10, and an old front vented 1 x 15 stack. For guitar I have a B-52 100-watt half triple rectifier half stack that I got at an unreal price because of certificates and sales. It runs on 12 A z and Y 7s. and has 4 6L6s.These last 2 can blow my neighbors away, but a mainly practice at night with headphones. The Marshall does have an aux in and headphone out. I just got it yesterday and have played a little with it, and I think it will do what I want for practice.
