Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon - one the great movie duos of all time. They would become most famously known as the original “Odd Couple”, but these two weren't so different after all, and were actually very much in sync. Their comedy partnership spanned close to four decades, making them one of the longest tenured comedy acts of all time. We take a look at what made them such a durable act and why their partnership was so great.

I have temporarily removed my patreon because of corona and the new financial situation for my family. But if I could give you a suggestion I would say Sherlock Holmes smarter brother. I understand logically that it is not a great film, but emotionally it is my favourite film of all time together with Young Frankenstein (both written by and starring Gene Wilder).

I was just a kid when my parents took me to the theater to watch Grumpy Old Men. The theater was packed and I've never witnessed people laughing so hard at a film. Nowadays, they don't make movies that effect people in such a way. Most "comedies" today barely perpetuate a small-chuckle----let alone several extended waves of belly laughs (that become relentlessly-contagious). To say "they don't make em' like they used to" doesn't even begin to describe the vast difference between the movies of today vs the movies of yesteryear.

It's a bit weird, but one of the things that I'm grateful for (beyond their work) is that 1) they were hip and popular and heavily-employed in the 1990s, so their last decade was also one of their most productive, and 2) both men died before 9/11. Lemmon almost made it there too. I can't imagine what it would've done to them to see that at the end of things. They ended on a high note and didn't see it end.

I never quite felt the 2nd Odd Couple film was in the same league, despite some funny scenes, and the Grumpy Old Men are fun to catch late at night on the TV rather than being top-notch too. @@HatsOffEntertainment I liked it. I'm not sure how much of that was just loving the duo or the fact that I went in expecting garbage, but I've continued to come back to it when I can, and I even showed it to my wife, who is a much harsher critic than I am, and she thought it deserved a DVD release too. I don't know what Ebert was talking about when he said there were no laughs. I definitely laughed. Lemmon channels a lot of Felix in this one and Matthau nails it as the cool and calm hitman that starts to unravel, thanks to his hotel next door neighbor, who would reprise that proximity a dozen years later in Wabasha, MN. The worst thing about Buddy Buddy, by far, was Paula Prentiss, who played Lemmon's estranged wife. It was distractingly bad. She was nominated for a Stinker Award for worst supporting actress.
It may not be a must see for everybody, but It is a must see for all Lemmon & Matthau fans...if they can find it.

These guys were great together and apart. I can't imagine anyone other than James Garner in 'My Fellow Americans ', though. He and Jack were perfect together in that movie. I don't see Walter in that role. Walter was so great in the blue collar roles. The everyman. He was perfect in 'The Odd Couple ', 'Bad News Bears' and 'Survivors'. Good video.

James Garner was perfect in "My Fellow Americans". As much as I love Matthau, I really couldn't see him as a swarmy, womanizing former president like Garner can.

Thanks to Sunday afternoon movies I was a huge Jack Lemmon fan. My mother was a Walter Mathau fan as long as I can remember. So of course we went to see Buddy Buddy at the theater. I know you'll probably still want to see it yourself, but I can assure you, you will regret it. It was so bad that we we couldn't bring ourselves to risk seeing Grumpy Old Men until we'd heard overwhelming praise from multiple people who were familiar with our tastes.

Buddy Buddy is an OK film, not among the best of everybody involved in it, although I had a very good version either coming from MGM or Warner Bros., who owns it now. However, both Lemmon and Matthau are terrific in their parts. The other film that they made previously, Kotch (with Lemmon as a director) is very good and Matthau always consider it as his favorite one. The opening credits sequence is unforgettable.

Hey Joe. I remember seeing Buddy Buddy on HBO in the early 80s. I would call it a dark comedy and it wasn't too bad. I would say it highlighted their dramatic prowess, and the comedic subplot just didn't click. It reminds me of another movie Matthau starred in a few years later called The Survivors. It was a dark comedy with Jerry Reed playing the bad guy. Worth watching sometime if you haven't already. I think both movies were a bit ahead of their time. By the 90s, i can see them being a hit in the same tone as Fargo.

you may take Roger Ebert view and not watch Buddy Buddy. As a fan of Billy Wilder style timing and wit , it saddened me to find neither in this film. Much like a previous venture with Jack Lemmon Avanti The Wilder touch just isnt there and Lemmon & Matthau try to bring their characters to life but the script by Wilder doesnt have anything for them to grab on to.

They were great in 'The Fortune Cookie'... saw it when I was a kid... Jack Lemon was great in 'Glengary, Glenross'...In another Neil Simon screen play, where he plays one half of a husband and wife team driven stir crazy in a NYC apartment, don't wanna guess at the title... Then there's the movie where he plays, alongside the female role, a couple who get eaten alive, so to speak, in a brief sojourn in NYC... Steve Martin repraised the role, but it wasn't nearly as good... Almost impossible to top Lemon...
Ah, I just remembered the Neil Simon adapted screenplay was called, 'Prisoner of 2nd Avenue'... Good Movie...

The Odd Couple, Grumpy Old Men and The Fortune Cookie, ALL Hilarious! Of I was a Hollywood executive, and I could choose any two actors in today's pictures to cast an Odd Couple remake, I'd choose Paul Rudd and Mark Ruffalo. The chemistry they've shown together in interviews, and in scenes together, absolutely hilarious. I think it would be a winner.

I love the Matthau & Lemmon pairing and always have owning many of these films on DVD. Lemmon is one of my favourite actors and I'd love to see a video on him alone. With that said, I despised The Odd Couple 2 and felt it was terribly weak. The Grumpy Old Men movies however... are masterclasses. Thank you for this video.
