I have to tell you this... Planes, Trains and Automobiles was the last movie my brother and I watched together before he passed away from cancer a few weeks after Thanksgiving in 1994. He was so eaten up from battling it that he could barely speak. As we watched we kept laughing and smiling from scene to scene. Right after the freeze frame ending on Candy's face he looked over at me with a tear in his eye and with heavy breath uttered, "That was a good movie." I didn't know it at the time that they would be the last words he ever spoke to me. Now, every Thanksgiving I watch this movie and relish the found memory of my brother, Paul. This is why it is my favorite movie of all time! To see the uncut version would be the greatest gift.
Sorry for your loss sir. Who didn’t shed a tear on that final scene in the movie. I do recall the theatre being packed for that film and comedies were really funny back then. Hughes followed those with the Home Alone films and uncle buck. It ushered in the 90’s with other comedies like My cousin Vinny, tommy boy, Happy Gilmore to name a few. It seemed from 87-97 we had a string of real funny movies.
@@carinabella3393 Martin and Candy were really such an amazing duo in this - they really were an 80s version of Matthau and Lemon, their comedic interaction was simply stunning.
You're right for it to bother you. This film means a great deal to many people, so it seems utterly ridiculous to me that it has not been released in its full form.
@@bokhans the "I Spit on your Grave" remake was better than the original and there is one other movie on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember which one it was. Other than that, yeah, most remakes are shite compared to their originals.
And it's a bigger crime all the great movie scripts they don't pull and use because they are afraid to invest time and money into something that's not already proven but that's how Hollywood is working these days, thus you see so many sequels and big comic movies because they already know they will make money on them. They want to have zero risk
but that's like saying it's a crime every musician's unreleased songs are rotting away somewhere- when in reality they are both unreleased for the simple reason that they are not as the artist intended. they aren't included in the final cut because the creators found them non essential to the work itself
@@estelleaeon usually it’s not the artist’s decision but the publisher’s. They force them to remove certain content to keep it within a certain length, then lock it away never to see the light of day because they only care about money. Don’t get me started on Universal who literally had an entire warehouse of thousands of priceless master tapes burn down in a fire. It is criminal.
Studios have destroyed film for the pettiest reasons. The biggest example was destroying Orson Welles's original cut of his masterpiece "The Magnificent Ambersons" while Welles was out of the country so that he couldn't stop them. The studio also destroyed all the film footage so he couldn't go back and edit a new version either. Critics who saw Welles's original cut say if his cut had survived, we would be talking about that movie in the same breath as "Citizen Kane." The version that was released in theaters was a hatchet job only interested in staying within the studio's desired runtime and it showed.
I have only shed a tear once for an actor that passed and that was John Candy. Every time I watch him in a movie…he was just incredibly sincere in every role. As for a remake??? Why? They will NEVER capture the magic of the original, NEVER. The other actors are talented in their own way but they are no Martin and Candy, not even close.
Oh God, me too. I felt as though I lost a personal friend. There was something so sweet about that man. I still think about his passing sometimes and it chokes me up that he left us so soon, too soon.
So many brilliant comic actors have departed far too soon. Robin Williams, Chris Farley, John Belushi, Mitch Hedberg, Bill Hicks, Greg Giraldo, Bernie Mac, Patrice O'Neal, Andy Kaufman, Gilda Radner, Phil Hartman, etc.. And yes, John Candy is absolutely on that list of brilliance gone too soon. It’s pretty astonishing if you think about it. All that talent and brightness gone way too soon. It’s almost like they burned so brightly and intensely that their duration was briefer than the rest of us🙏🏼
Agreed. I wish he was at least around for another decade. I recently learned that "Last Holiday" was originally written with Cansy in mind before he died, and now I can't help but imagine John in the role whenever somebody watches it.
I love John Candy. This will always be one of my favourites up there with Uncle Buck. One of the most beautiful final scenes in film. It epitomizes everything Mr Candy was about and makes me proud just to be a Canadian. And God bless, John Hughes.
I wondered why Neal's wife was so emotional at the end. It always seemed a little over the top. "Jeez, lady, he had some delays. Get a grip." But now it makes sense.
I always felt that way as a kid. Once I watched it a few times as an adult, I inferred more. Mostly because I saw the movie scene she is watching when she can't sleep because Neil hasn't come home yet. It's from Hughes' other film "She's Having a Baby". In that scene (Neil's Wife) Susan is watching the couple is having it out because she finds out he IS cheating on her. "I'd go barefoot!" The main character of that film is (funny enough) played by Kevin Bacon who is in that scene where he and Steve Martin are running for the cab in the beginning of PT&A(...which implies he is trying to get home to his wife too...)you "get it" when you have all of those details that she thinks Neil is having an affair, but without that tiny clue she seems weirdly histrionic and over emotional.
I thought that his wife's relief at the end was very much in line with what little trepidation of hers that the movie conveyed. I guess it was just me.
For as much as they cut out, the editors were brilliant at creating a masterpiece. The continuity is nearly flawless. I would never had guessed so much was left out if I hadn't seen this video.
Agreed...the movies movies at a brisk pace but doesn't feel rushed. I think maybe a few scenes to pad it out would make it a bit better but the final version is very well edited considering how much they cut.
If Steve wasn't retired and John was still alive I bet we'd get infinite movies with them. I do think a sequel can happen maybe where Del's had a son meeting with Neal. Steve would be funny and some young comedian could be funny
@@andywinslow9638 Steve Martin is not retired. He was recently touring a live show with Martin Short. Hilarious! Saw it twice live. It's also on Netflix; "Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life"
@@HatsOffEntertainment Perhaps Steve would be in a position to make inquiries as to the condition of the original footage. If they can release the miraculously "discovered" cuts of silent-era gems like Metropolis with warts and all, surely the prints don't have to be pristine to be appreciated.
@@HatsOffEntertainment, send this video to Ryan Reynolds on Twitter. He's a huge John Candy fan and fellow Canandian Maybe he could help push for its restoration and release.
@@erikwehrmeister Great fuckity balls. Martin, Reynolds, and by extension, Moranis? Who knows who else would jump on the bandwagon, especially with the recommendation that Shout Factory or Criterion would take the job? We almost can't lose! We need to jump on this shit!
My grandmother loved this movie. I remember me, her and my mom watching it together every Thanksgiving and never getting tired of it. The actors, the plot, the delivery, the chemistry; just perfect. Now that my grandmother is gone, I still watch it every year during the holidays with my mom and it always brings us joy.
Count me in for hoping for an extended version at some point. That scene with Del and Neal at the cafe at the end sounds heartbreakingly wonderful and you know Candy hit it out of the park. Would love to see it.
I agree John Candy was a tremendous actor. The few dramatic scenes that he did were so excellent. It's so sad that man was taken from us at such a young age. I miss him
As a huge, Hughes/Candy fan, this pains me to death. To know there’s a Hughes original cut of Plans, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck... damn! And to think these original cuts are just sitting in their canisters deteriorating brings a tear to my eye. These are both Hughes/Candy classics and both versions of each film should most definitely be available for the fans.
@@justwaiting5744 I watched the uncut version (well sort of) on TV last night, and had the dinner on the desk there. Didn't catch it at first, but that was pretty clever of them.
@@justwaiting5744 Not sure about that, seems like a conscious choice to not include it on the DVD for some reason, who knows why. Coulda been a mistake too perhaps hard to say.
I was working out in South Lake Tahoe at the Edgewood Golf Course back in 89 when standing on the #10 tee box watering the grass next to the half way house when a foursome consisting of John Candy, Wayne Gretzky, owner of the LA Kings and one other playing partner came through. John had placed an order for a bunch of food to take with him on the back nine and was forced to wait as his playing partners had already headed down the fairway leaving John Candy behind, figuring he'd be catching up with them shortly. Standing there, I recalled a line from this movie and joked with him " Hey John, how about a nice hot dog and a beer." He turns and says to me "how about six hotdogs and a case of beer." which is what he was waiting for. It wasn't too long after that event where I would learn he had passed away, making me think that day I witnessed an act which would later contribute to his early demise. Made me very sad for everybody loved John Candy and I think he had a heart of gold. RIP John Candy.
@Vegan Higler Well we know that, I adored him, but that doesn't mean I or anyone else doesn't know what killed him. Sadly, when someone is that obese it is a form of slow suicide. He dealt with his emotional problems. And alcohol, refined sugar, processed foods, high salt and high fat killed him. People in this country create their own diseases and bring on early deaths. Do I wish he had taken care of himself so we would have had him longer. Yes, but just giving up meat wouldn't have worked. The body thrives on balance. Anyway. like I said I know why he died, I'm just sad that he did die.
IMO, it would have greatly taken away from the movie. The best part of the movie is Neal and Del. Neal comes off as an overworked guy who just wants to get home to his family, not a guy that would cheat on his wife on business trips. Plus it would have slowed down the pace of the movie.
Right! i always thought there was a plot hole when the sign says Chicago 110 (or something close to that) and then they spend the night and drive some more and THEN the truck ride takes more than 3 hours. Doesn’t add up, but now it does (or can).
It would be SO great to see the footage where the trooper points out they're in Wisconsin! Hahaha, I'm laughing just imagining it. I laughed through this whole little video!
Thinking more about it, another clue that the last leg of their trip (in the refrigerated tractor-trailer) was intended to originate in Wisconsin, is that it was a MILK truck!
No, Del would not have done it on purpose, it would have been an accident. He really was trying to get Neil home because he so respected what he had (wife and family).
3:30 I watch this movie every thanksgiving, even though we don't have such holiday here in Brazil I love it to death, I cry every time in the end scene
@Jack Arnsick mostly subtitles and some see dubbed. Brazil is beautiful and big, it has a lot of different places, giant metropolis, beautiful tropical paradises, vast south american Savannas, Japanese temples, italian villages and even german snowy towns. It's a very diverse country.
@Jack Arnsick Most brazilians do not speak english, so most people watch dubbed movies, but the quality of the dub is one of the best on the world . i like them both, with subtitles and dubbed. depends what am I watching
I just learned some wonderful news: A brand new 4K Blu Ray of this film is going to be released next month with over an hour of never before seen deleted & extended scenes finally being shown to the public.
Hands down, this is the best John Hughes film ever, and personally speaking, my favorite Holiday film that is closer to the message of the season than most Christmas movies.
Wow this really put the whole picture together for me. I cry everytime at the end of this film. Candy really brought the heart. And when the music swells and the camera cuts to Del and Neil carrying the trunk together, it's truly a great moment.
I think with these situations, the theatrical cut will always be perfect and part of our memories, but for cinema history's sake and our enjoyment there should also be a full length version. Blade Runner is a perfect example of where you have 5 cuts on the disc and it gives you so much from having access to this. I wish studios would make more of a repository for deleted material and full length cuts. with the same importance as film preservation and restoration. It's criminal how this material is often lying around in vaults all over the world, unknown about and deteriorating. Especially now we have Digital storage and streaming. The Snyder Cut of Justice League being put on HBO Max and the full version of The Hateful Eight on Netflix hopefully could pave the way. I think there is a market for people wanting to see full versions of classic films, and for streamers to get inexpensive, Exclusive, Must See content.
This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. A remake existing doesn't bother me but they SHOULD release the extra footage. No harm could come of it. Thanks for this amazing video and giving us a visual of these deleted scenes. - Leo
@@ABlackCountryWoman How about doing a remake with a Black actor as the Steve Martin role and and a Mexican as the John Candy role? We could have Samuel L Jackson in the Steve Martin role and Gabriel Iglesias as the John Candy Role.
A precious gem of a movie. Alongside Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, this is Martin's best performance and Candy's performance is one of the greatest ever performances of all time. A true classic.
This movie is a timeless masterpiece. I've watched it dozens of times and always enjoy it just like the first time. Even with the revelations of deleted footage and lack of cohesive events, I'll still sit every Thanksgiving watching it, welling up with tears at the end when he goes back for Del.
This was John Candy's opus. Love Uncle Buck, but PTaA shows that there are those unique characters we encounter in life who have a deeper backstory we never realize unless they tell us.
Watching this makes me really disappointed that I can’t see this original cut version. Also annoyed that I now know and will know every time I rewatch this brilliant movie.
Its Christmas day 2021..and I came to see this today, as anytime i want to smile and be happy I watch "Planes , Trains & Automobiles' and I this several times a year. I miss John Candy. What a wonderful human being.
I'm assuming they'd probably try Bill Murray and James Corden as a replacement pairing for instance but no, several of the jokes in the original would get taken out of context today
I would say it's already been remade - the film "Due Date" was pretty derivative of PT&A, & while it was an entertaining movie, it wasn't nearly as good a film as the latter.
I have no idea how UA-cam’s algorithm works. I gave up trying to figure it out. However, I’m grateful that it suggested a video from your channel. You have fantastic content. A lot of your ideas and ways to go about exploring film is different than the majority of other similar channels. Keep up the great work, mate. Subscribed.
With the 4K and its deleted footage... Did we just win?! Hopefully the scenes are in good enough quality, and enough of them, that we can recreate the 2 hour cut, and maybe even a good chunk of the 3 hour cut! Amazing. Can't wait to see. If it's good quality and does well, hope we get the same for Uncle Buck.
John Candy was beyond belief. An absolute titan. I think he is actually underrated, for all his fame. His comedic talent can cause one to ignore or be unaware of the sheer depth and power of his dramatic acting. Like most great comedians [Steve Martin of course as well] he runs the complete gamut from hilarity to pathos and heartbreak. A Giant.
The very first cut is always terrible. It's not anything like a director's cut. They simply take every scene that was shot, good or bad, and edit the material exactly as it was written in the working script. You can check out the 6-hour first cut of Apocalypse Now to see what I mean. That being said, I would be very interested in seeing the director's cut of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
I think the reason the theatrical version works so well is the Hughes was really a master of editing. References to events we didn't see get used as spice for what we do see.
Best film for Thanksgiving (granted not a lot but it ends on what matters NOT your job). Family and human decency. And that fade out on John Candy at end gets me every time….I see that and every time reminds me of his passing. John Hughes I read added? Just a smile and fade out but it’s perfect.
I knew there was a longer cut, but I never realized just how much footage was cut from the film. This is quite interesting. This is one of my favorite films and it would be cool if one day we got to see all of the footage that John Hughes shot and cut out on a new Blu-Ray release of the film or something of the sort. While what Hughes believes may be true regarding the footage having deteriorated, things have happened where what was once thought to be lost footage shows up decades after being removed from a film and ends up in the deleted scenes of a DVD and/or Blu-Ray release for a film or even a new extended cut of the film if some scenes work better as being cut back into the film.
You be surprised how many popular movies we all watched have been cut down to an 1.45 or barely 2 hours heck most of John Hughes movies all look like they're missing scenes and such.
Well, Richard Donner did a restoration of "Superman II" with missing scenes that greatly improved that movie. They could do the same thing with "Planes...", although I admit it would be easier if Hughes was still alive.
@@bearworldwide101 there's like a good hour of Explorers that was cut unfortunately, Paramount misplaced the footage, thus not allowing Joe Dante to assemble his intended cut in the 2000s
So glad I watched this video! The exchange of greetings in the final scene ("Hello, Mr. Griffith" "Hello, Mrs. Page") always bugged me just a touch, as if it carried an emotional weight that it never earned. Now I know that it was earned in the cut storyline about Neal's suspected infidelity and the cut coffee shop scene between Neal and Del. Thanks for that!
I saw planes trains and automobiles last year on AMC for the first time and I enjoyed every minute of the movie... was mad though they cut out the swearing scene so I rewatched the movie on the fire stick and laughed my ass off when Neil sweared off at the car rental place.... my favorite scene and the mess around scene..
If Criterian can release the extended roadshow cut of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World they most certainly could release these cuts. Please get on it Criterian, or Shout! I would love to see the 3 hour cut.
If we don't eventually get the Criterion/Shout release of that director's cut in the coming years but we get a shitty remake, I might just tear a hole in the space-time continuum and move to the alternate universe where the final cut is three and a half hours long.
We are Nearing Thanksgiving 2023, but I need to share a story from the past. Back in 96, one of my brothers who had been in decline and suffering physically due to drug abuse, was able to get transport across country, back to see family. Some of us had an overwhelming sense that his demise would be soon, and not in a sense of any salvation, other than to escape physical pain from Hepatitis C. I was Blessed that he came to spend some time with me, and I played my VCR tape of this movie. Even with his physical (and later to realize, spiritual) pain, he laughed heartily at this movie. I was so happy to have shared that with him. He had actually been under suicide watch from the methadone clinic from which he was receiving treatment. But went back to his home, and then just disappeared. It was eventually found that he had committed suicide. I can only say that I continue to be happy about providing him with some bit of relief by sharing this completely heartfelt comedy with him. 😢
We need to see this footage!!!!!!. It’s the only extra pieces of a movie I’ve seen that would add to the story instead of take away from it. Maybe Ryan Reynolds being such a fan and a good Canadian could help everyone out getting this footage released.
Makes me happy to see so many people enjoy the originals I grew up with. It’s hard to watch these remakes and reboots been given to the next generation and them having no idea which actors and directors made these stories amazing......sons of motherless goats 🐐
This and “The Out Of Towners” with Jack Lemmon are perhaps the two greatest comedies of all time. To the person who made this, thank you for the background but thank you also for finally making me believe I wasn’t crazy as I saw that airplane scene on tv 30 years ago and never since. Every time I would talk about this movie I would tell people but started to doubt I ever saw it in the first place. While Will Smith & Kevin Hart are great actors there’s no way they could touch the genius of Martin & Candy in a remake. There are certain films that should be left alone and this is one of them. Smith & Hart are great comedic actors (Will Smith is one of the best all around) so write them a new script for a new comedy and I’ll be happy to see it but PLEASE leave Planes, Trains & Automobiles alone. Yes, I Would love to see the directors cut and hope they can find the print.
I agree leave it alone its a classic....I get so sick of them remaking old films, surely theres some new writers out there....Give us something new....🤷♀️
Yes I agree. However the scenes that didn't make the cut would have been awesome to have seen. To bad so much was left out. A person can get a dvd with the scene called airline food. That's as good as that's going to get. As for a remake I believe that is a bad idea. There is just no way there going to make it any better probably only worse
12:28, I think that Hughes had the right idea. Del saying those two lines in the train station really encapsulates the message which is cut in the coffee house. I believe that Hughes believed that audience does not need everything explained word by word, if you had watched the movie, you would understand everything that was said in the coffee house without even needing to see the coffee house scene. I for one almost always cry at Del at the train station scene, I don't need additional 5 minute scene to Del explain everything, I understand it just from those two lines. And also Steve Martins beautiful reaction to Dels revalation speaks for itself. Showing without telling...
I think the question of whether the scene (or any scene for that matter) should have been cut or not, is answered by whatever the motivation was for cutting it in the first place. If the motivation was what you alluded to, then thatis a good argument for its omission. However, if the motivation was time constraints and pressure from the studio to make it a standard length comedy, then there is a very strong case for those scenes being reinstated and John Hughes vision being properly realised. After all, the scene you mentioned obviously worked for Steve Martin. Plus, the foolishness of Candy sporting an unexplained black eye in the final shot sounds more like interference from above, than a John Hughes choice.
There's a little "hint" at the beginning. When Dell steals Neal's cab, Neal looks down to the mud puddle where the cab was and there's a shower curtain ring floating in it.
@@Lunafalls I also recently noticed in the diner scene right after Dell sells a lot of rings to teenage girls, a customer in the background and the waitress are wearing them too.
Absolutely love planes, trains and automobiles and my son as well. Your content on the missing cuts is both informative and endearing. Some movies you can just watch over and over. Your video adds clarity to the final cut. Thanks for making this.
FYI, Steve Martin shared an article on his Twitter that appears to be written in response to this video/documentary and this video was embedded within it. So perhaps Steve Martin has now watched your video which is insanely awesome!
Not sure on that... Call it a Mandela Effect but I remember the ending scenes (that were supposedly cut) in the original... I watched this movie religiously when it was first released and wondered why so much of the end was truncated quite recently.
@@jasoncampbell3955 There is the scene where the head of the marketing company is STILL trying to decide on the ads. That sometimes gets omitted as the credits fly by in TV versions.
What about the special TV shot scene where the cheerful car lady laughs at Neal and says you're screwed after he mentions he threw the papers away? Does anyone recall that?
@@Thomasmemoryscentral There is also the 'airline' clean version where Martin's outburst with the 'F' bombs are replaced with the word 'damn' to clean it up (scene therefore shot twice, I think that was the word). That's the version we used at TV station I worked at.
This movie warms me every time i see it. It's a perfect reflection on my younger life with my best friend. On a trip when we went to London and spent all of our money and had to jump a train to Birmingham, thumb a ride back to Manchester and walk back home. It happened way before the time of video phones ect but i tell you. Everything that happened on that journey was golden. We fought, we laughed, we definitely got lost but we came out with an amazing memory.
Something I never knew. The cut footage with behind the scenes background, especially combined with the original and a reworked extended cut on a DVD? Yes please 🤚
Yep, knowing that makes that final scene and the other ones with his wife make much more sense... my wife and I always wondered "why is she being so bitchy?!"
I can't even put into words how excited I am to finally watch the unreleased footage I first learned about from this video 2 years ago. My family is going to watch it on Thanksgiving! Absolutely cannot wait!
That is awesome. The scenes make a little more sense now with knowing what was cut. The end had always confused me a little. I couldn't figure why the wife was so relieved to see him bring someone home.
“Planes, Trains and automobiles is my definition of a perfect film”. Never watched your channel before. But as soon as you said that, you have earned a new sub! 💯💯💯💯…
I know exactly how you feel.. My voice cracks and my eyes water each and every time I watch the movie.. Takes you back to a more comfortable time in reflection.. A true classic with true legendary people.. Thank you John Hughes and John Candy for a true classic. You both are sorely missed..!
jamez2468 You are right Paul Young also definitely is featured in the last scene, I think the name of the song is "Every Time You Go Away". The Dream Academy song is "Power to Believe" also featured in the last scene.
I ALWAYS wondered why the final line of dialogue was delivered the way it was. I've seen fan speculation asking if Del knew Neil's wife beforehand, and that was the reason for the delivery to be the way it is. This video finally put the pieces together. Thank you!! And congrats on the official bluray release.
OMG!! I knew it! For years watching this I knew there must have been stuff missing. I literally watch this around 5 times per end of year lol. Anyone I’ve ever met gets made to watch this. And I will continue for the rest of my time on this earth to make sure this movie has newbies 😂 Thanks for the video man!
Excellent video, thank you for this information (I didn’t know about it). Very interesting stuff, would love to see the extra footage some day. One of my top fav movies for decades now😊
I'm so glad to finally understand why the final scene is so overly emotional and why it just ends with a freeze on Candy's face. Because this is also one of my favorite films and I never though that was a fitting ending. I'd pay for a crowdfund any day, if Paramount could find enough footage.
I'm not disappointed that they deleted the diner scene where Del tells the story about losing his wife. I always loved the fact that Neal intuitively pieced together Del's sad life from remembering bits of "between the lines" dialogue and Del's revealing facial expressions of loss and sadness throughout the trip without the verbal explanation. Less is more works for me.
The one thing about restoring the original cut, is that people tend to be lazy to find or restore print of the cut. As if hollywood does not care about hungry cinephiles, wanting to see more directors cut (Such as Its a Mad mad world)
"As if hollywood does not care about hungry cinephiles, wanting to see more directors cut" I'm hoping that the Snyder Cut can help studios realise the potential value in "lost cuts" of movies. Gradually over time we might start seeing more directors visions restored if it's seen as a good way to make money!
I have painful memories of this movie. As a young teenager it was hilarious all the way, but the end was somewhat a door to adulthood. Since then I realized that life is a tragic comedy where emotions can turn upside down at any moment. Knowing that this movie was so much longer makes sense. Steve Martins wife in this movie wasn't really present and I remember I was rather surprised that she was shown at all. John Candy is unmatched, there weren't many actors in film history that could make you laugh and wheep at the same moment.
I also watch PTA at least once a year. Every scene is gold. Martin and Candy were perfect. I never knew how much was taken out and thank you for explaining some things I struggled with, such as why did it look like Del had a black eye and why Neil said Del went through his stuff. I would love to see more footage. I can’t imagine the great stuff that wound up on the floor! I hope someone saves it and we get to see it someday. I always want more after watching it. I hope Hollywood realizes that we don’t need a remake. I feel they go for easy over an original idea anymore. Thanks again!
After purchasing the first ever DVD of the movie when it was released in the 1990's I realized that the airplane scene was removed. I was so livid I sent a nasty letter to Paramount demanding to know why the scene (one of the funniest in the film) was deleted. They actually wrote back to me saying that they didn't have the permission of the old guy in the scene and had to remove it from the DVD version. It was still on the VHS version from the 1980's however. It makes me so angry that there is another 90 minutes of footage rotting away in a vault somewhere when it could have been re-edited, cleaned up and preserved for release. My goodness they just did that with the Beatles "Get Back" film. I wonder if Steve Martin would have any clout in making this happen?
Things like this make perfect material to discuss creative writing and film making. I write as a hobby, and little edits can totally transform story-telling. In this example, you can see how important it is to balance action. Just right, and you have The Matrix. Too much, you have The Matrix: Reloaded. We know the characters. The disgusting sink with Neil was a powerful image, but we can imagine a spilled beer. Referencing what ELSE happened to characters while the world was spinning can be brilliant. Very effective here, hilarious, and quickly adds to the growing tension between the characters. Less action was more, in this case.
I love this channel. Your next video (after the holidays) HAS to be The Dream Team with Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd, and Peter Boyle. It's a REALLY good movie that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should, and I'd love for you to do a video about it.
When you talking about the scene with Del talking about his wife. It almost hit me hard and I almost had tears in my eyes, it took my breath away know how sad it was, I only wish that I can see it. I really can't believe that they're making a remake. I know they ain't going to do it justice cause it's going to be akin to Are we there yet or other films like it. It going a wacky zany comedy that going to high jinx jokes in the worst way as all comedy remakes do.
There is no way for any actor to play the John Candy role. I would feel bad for anyone being offered the role. They might as well be trying to cast someone as Charleton Heston, for any role he played.
Same here. Can someone tell Hollywood that not every film needs a remake?
@@bokhans the "I Spit on your Grave" remake was better than the original and there is one other movie on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember which one it was. Other than that, yeah, most remakes are shite compared to their originals.
It really is a crime that these studios just keep priceless footage locked away and deteriorating in a vault somewhere.
And it's even worse that they rather consider making some stupid remake no one needs and asked for than release the old footage.
I still think about his passing sometimes and it chokes me up that he left us so soon, too soon.
you bet!
John Candy was such a kind and decent man.
He was the type of guy that was fairly common in the 80's --- a stranger who just wanted to share some laughs with you
Yeah, everyone who worked with him said he was a genuinely nice guy
Nailed it. He was the best.
Stole every scene he was ever in, RIP
I miss him dearly
This and Uncle Buck is what makes John Candy one of my favourite actors, I wish he was still alive today
It’s almost like they burned so brightly and intensely that their duration was briefer than the rest of us🙏🏼
Gus Polinski polka king of the Midwest.
Uncle Buck must have been three hours too. That film feels incredibly choppy.
Agreed. I wish he was at least around for another decade. I recently learned that "Last Holiday" was originally written with Cansy in mind before he died, and now I can't help but imagine John in the role whenever somebody watches it.
Spaceballs would out my top 3!
I love John Candy. This will always be one of my favourites up there with Uncle Buck. One of the most beautiful final scenes in film. It epitomizes everything Mr Candy was about and makes me proud just to be a Canadian. And God bless, John Hughes.
Yes, I share your feelings, and I have only half Canadian blood!🙂
I wondered why Neal's wife was so emotional at the end. It always seemed a little over the top. "Jeez, lady, he had some delays. Get a grip." But now it makes sense.
Well he was all over the place in evey situation. That would shake a wife up.
"I'd go barefoot!"
The main character of that film is (funny enough) played by Kevin Bacon who is in that scene where he and Steve Martin are running for the cab in the beginning of PT&A(...which implies he is trying to get home to his wife too...)you "get it" when you have all of those details that she thinks Neil is having an affair, but without that tiny clue she seems weirdly histrionic and over emotional.
Yeah! I totally agree. I’m so glad I know the context now! 🙂
I thought that his wife's relief at the end was very much in line with what little trepidation of hers that the movie conveyed. I guess it was just me.
That's hysterical!! I'm gonna start using that, 'get a grip!'

Agreed...the movies movies at a brisk pace but doesn't feel rushed. I think maybe a few scenes to pad it out would make it a bit better but the final version is very well edited considering how much they cut.
So much talent, charisma, and warmth between Candy and Martin, truly a shame we didn't get more with these two.
If Steve wasn't retired and John was still alive I bet we'd get infinite movies with them. I do think a sequel can happen maybe where Del's had a son meeting with Neal. Steve would be funny and some young comedian could be funny

RIP John Candy.
if this is true, you had a moment with a guy who indeed had a warm heart.
He died in 1994.
I think of that too. I often wish he had taken better care of his health so he could have had a longer time here in the world.
I feel cheated that I didn’t get the back story of his wife thinking he was cheating. It makes so much sense now. Thank you for this.
yes. I just thought that her greeting to them at the end was over the top and bad acting; but we didn't know the backstory.
IMO, it would have greatly taken away from the movie. The best part of the movie is Neal and Del. Neal comes off as an overworked guy who just wants to get home to his family, not a guy that would cheat on his wife on business trips. Plus it would have slowed down the pace of the movie.

We will be watching this movie tonight, as we always do the day before Thanksgiving. It's a classic in every sense of the word.
The theatrical cut is a near perfect film but I certainly would like to see the four hour version. Definitely no need for a remake.

The very first cut is always terrible. It's not anything like a director's cut. Now I have learned that so much was cut out, I'm thankful to the editor for not ruining the film. But needs a director's cut.
I think the reason the theatrical version works so well is the Hughes was really a master of editing. References to events we didn't see get used as spice for what we do see.
It does seem funnier hearing about the exploding can then seeing it. But some of these subplots would be nice to see.

Some of this footage is definitely out there in a can somewhere. Footage much older has survived far worse circumstances.
I've seen versions of Metropolis with lost scenes put back in regardless of their poor quality so it's not unheard of
You be surprised how many popular movies we all watched have been cut down to an 1.45 or barely 2 hours heck most of John Hughes movies all look like they're missing scenes and such.
Well, Richard Donner did a restoration of "Superman II" with missing scenes that greatly improved that movie. They could do the same thing with "Planes...", although I admit it would be easier if Hughes was still alive.

One of the funniest movies ever made. It's one of those movies you can rewatch and laugh hysterically as if seeing it for the first time.
Laughed hysterically, and then at the end something got in my eyes and they started watering!
While I was glad to see the full version, I think the theatrical cut of Mad World is the best.

I'm now wondering. What were those "pillows"
@@DeadpoolGames19 they were Neal's legs. But, then again, a joke is never funny when you have to explain it
@@moviemetalhead oh. I thought they were his buttcheeks
There's a little "hint" at the beginning. When Dell steals Neal's cab, Neal looks down to the mud puddle where the cab was and there's a shower curtain ring floating in it.
Seriously? I never noticed that! Oh wow! 😄
@@Lunafalls I also recently noticed in the diner scene right after Dell sells a lot of rings to teenage girls, a customer in the background and the waitress are wearing them too.
Great catch!!!
Absolutely love planes, trains and automobiles and my son as well. Your content on the missing cuts is both informative and endearing. Some movies you can just watch over and over. Your video adds clarity to the final cut. Thanks for making this.
The wish has been granted. Hughes Cut on 4K comes out next week.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral That's in the final film. It's just in the movie she says, "You're fucked." On TV they say, "You're screwed."
@@Thomasmemoryscentral There is also the 'airline' clean version where Martin's outburst with the 'F' bombs are replaced with the word 'damn' to clean it up (scene therefore shot twice, I think that was the word). That's the version we used at TV station I worked at.
Thanks for your work on this. It really is John Hughes best film and far and away one of the best comedies of all time.
Man I'd love to see the full cut of this, it's my favorite comedy of all time.
Yes - for the love of god release the Hughes cut!! The fact that anything that man did is on a cutting room floor is insane.
I’m glad to know now about the subplot where his wife thinks he’s cheating. That really does add impact to their moment at the end.
I had always thought her "what's going on Neal?" line sounded a lot more suspicious than a mere travel delay called for.
Yep, knowing that makes that final scene and the other ones with his wife make much more sense... my wife and I always wondered "why is she being so bitchy?!"
Thanks for posting this! You are definitely not alone in your love of this film. It's a masterpiece. My all-time favorite film.
Lost my mother in 2010 and watched this with my dad a few weeks ago. Hits different. Awesome movie. People are icebergs, man.
“Planes, Trains and automobiles is my definition of a perfect film”. Never watched your channel before. But as soon as you said that, you have earned a new sub! 💯💯💯💯…
Steve Martin has gone on record to say this is his favorite movie he was in, which says a lot
I know exactly how you feel.. My voice cracks and my eyes water each and every time I watch the movie.. Takes you back to a more comfortable time in reflection.. A true classic with true legendary people.. Thank you John Hughes and John Candy for a true classic. You both are sorely missed..!
The music at the end, the scene when he’s at the station. Just gets me without fail, every time
Me too!!😢
I think the music at the end was by The Dream Academy. They had a big hit Life in a Northern Town.
You may be right, I thought it was Paul Young.
jamez2468 You are right Paul Young also definitely is featured in the last scene, I think the name of the song is "Every Time You Go Away". The Dream Academy song is "Power to Believe" also featured in the last scene.
@@PaulbylPaulbyl Correct. It’s perfect for the film, both songs.
One of my top fav movies for decades now😊
A lot of movies have deleted scenes and hidden stuff thank god for UA-cam
That was still the case and wouldn't have changed. The diner scene happened AFTER Neil figured it all out on his own.
The one thing about restoring the original cut, is that people tend to be lazy to find or restore print of the cut. As if hollywood does not care about hungry cinephiles, wanting to see more directors cut (Such as Its a Mad mad world)
What is the deal with its a mad mad mad world? Love that movie
Thanks very much for putting this together. One of my favourite ever movies, and this insight has given me a fresh angle next time I enjoy it.
This is one of the BEST movies ever made.
The voices you did for them were pretty good aha this was enjoyable
John Hughes made some incredible movies and this is by far my favorite holiday movie! I would love to watch the 3+ hour version! ❤️
The beer can thing is honestly funnier off screen to me.
Agreed!
My thoughts exactly. Out of the blue, "I'm sorry, I had no idea those beer cans were going to explode like that."
@@damatar right??
Way funnier! The laugh hits you out of the blue when they are in bed
I love this channel. Your next video (after the holidays) HAS to be The Dream Team with Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd, and Peter Boyle. It's a REALLY good movie that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should, and I'd love for you to do a video about it.
Yes! I watched the Dream Team constantly as a kid. I revisited it a few years ago and it still holds up. It deserves to be remembered.
R.I.P. John Candy. This movie is one of my favorites around the holidays
