Leslie Nielsen - one of the most inspiring success stories in film history. Although he had early ambitions to be a dramatic leading man, he would end up settling for smaller character parts in film and TV for most of his career. He was then cast in a comedy film at age 54 that would reinvent him as a performer and lead to him becoming one of the biggest film stars of the decade. Growing up my dad was quite conservative and didn't express a lot of interest in humor. When he saw The Naked Gun he laughed so hard at the "Nice beaver!" part that he literally changed as a person into someone who now loves fun and laughter. The movie transformed our LIVES.
Now that comedy movies basically don't exist, it's really interesting to re-watch Naked Gun 1-3. They 'hold up,' but it's weird cuz everybody copied them hackily, for so long. Honestly Leslie might be the difference, he sells 1950s cop performance so well, it sets the movies apart from the worse parodies.
@@gibberconfirm166 Part of what worked about Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker's comedy productions is that they tended to use actors that were previously known for more serious roles. It makes it work so much better when they did comedy because they could do it with such a serious cadence and in a decidedly non-comedic way. It made the jokes land better because the characters weren't necessarily trying to be funny, they were being serious in spite of all the humorous things going on around them. Making good comedy films is apparently much more difficult than it would seem.
@@-Ricky_Spanish- Also I believe the ZAZ trio (and Pat Proft) had a kind of talent to make jokes that I don't think anyone would be able to master again the same way they did it. Leslie Nielsen was great on their movies, but also the writing and directing was spot-on. So it was a combination of talents that's hard to find.

He was great as the President in Scary Movie 3.
My mom was a flight attendant who met Mr. Nielsen during a flight during the early 90s. She only had great things to say about him, that he was a very friendly and didn't take himself too seriously, being easy to talk to. She still tells the story to this day.

Bro there are just some people like that, for example Clint Eastwood, between a fist full of dollars and a few dollars more he looked like he put on some serious age, and then from FDM (1965) until probably about unforgiven (1992) he didn’t look like he aged a single day. Idk how some people do it, i guess its genetics that they can go 10-20 years looking the exact same.

This was my favorite of all of those
We met him at an autograph signing event next to Burbank Airport. He didn't treat us special until he discovered my disabled son was a big fan and we had driven a ways to that show just to see him only.
We have photos of Leslie with my son and both are beaming. They are sitting next to each other with Leslie having his arm around my son's shoulder smiling away. You can tell both are really enjoying themselves. It's like he had been signing photos all morning and finally a REAL FAN had made his day! I think Leslie was living in Florida and flew out for the signing event. He really treated my son good :) RIP Leslie Nielsen.

@@Solivigant. True. But because my son was disabled and had a special wanting to meet him Mr. Nielsen really went out of his way to make him happy. And from the autographed photo of the two of them we have on the wall Mr. Nielsen seems pretty happy also.

When NPR ran his obituary, they played some of his best lines from "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" and the like. I sent NPR an e-mail thanking them and saying "I've never laughed so hard at an obituary!" I bet Neilson would have appreciated that!

I woulf have went to the coat check scene myself, but that's still good.

Brilliant in both writing and delivery.
Another driving monologue, later in the same show, he has laundry in his car. Guess he was still checking on those laundry mats lol 😆
ZAZ and Nielsen simply were a perfect comedic combination, one couldn't have worked so well without the other. Airplane!, Police Squad and TNG trilogy will always remain some of the best comedy ever.

@@triggeredcat120 I read an interview years ago... I think it was from one of the Zucker brothers... and they were actually relieved when it was cancelled. They were realizing that they couldn't possibly come up with enough setups / jokes / gags to fill an entire 24 episode season... it would be like making a 10 hour long Naked Gun movie.

I’m an operations director now and I was working with 24 year old kid this past weekend and I dropped the surely you can’t be serious…. And in perfect beat he delivered I am and don’t call me Shirley.
Needless to say he is in line to get a promotion. Not just based off knowing that line. But he’s actually a good kid and a hell of a worker!!

I had no idea that "Dracula Dead and Loving It" was considered a failure... I remember watching that movie as a kid with my dad and we both loved it.
Me, too! I was super shocked to hear that because everyone I knew loved it!
I recently watched it and it's 100% on par with his other comedy works. Especially the scene with the 2 women in the bedroom 😂
How this flopped is beyond me...
Probably other factors played a role, maybe marketing or something.
I saw it for the first time last year and thought it was hilarious. Didn't even know it was a supposed flop, just thought hey here's one I missed.
By that time in the 90's, we were culturally burned out on parodies. It felt like every second movie that came out was trying to one-up the last pisstake. If it had been released earlier, it would have been better received, i'm sure of it.

I loved the train chase sequence.
I think the only one who had the deadpan acting perfected in a similar way was Lloyd Bridges. His lines in Hot Shots still make me crack up. Delivered with such seriousness and seemingly honest confusion. God I miss these guys. :(
I vigilantly search for opportunities in conversations to say his line (from the same movie): "Let's take out out wad of cotton and get straight to the aspirin."
its CRIMINALLY under rated. The part where they arrest him and are walking him to the car and all the news reporters smack their microphones and boom mics into his face continuously makes me laugh so hard tears fall down my face. I remember seeing that scene for the first time and I just rewound the VHS at least 10 times to see it again. His comedic timing was impeccable.

I would have been about twelve the first time I saw The Naked Gun, right after it came out on VHS. I swear, I nearly asphyxiated. I laughed so hard my vision was fading out.
It got to the point that I'd practically be begging my dad to pause the tape 'cos I couldn't take any more. The next gag set piece would start up and I'd be thinking, "No, please no. No more. Please stop. Please . . . "
A few years later, we went to see the sequel at the cinema and, the moment Drebin appeared on screen, it all came back.
"Uh-oh. This was a bad idea. I'm not gonna make it . . . "
Laughed so hard my gut was sore for days afterwards.
I begged my mom to take my brother and I to see naked gun...she thought it looked so stupid... but she finally took us, and I never heard her laugh so hard than she did watching that movie, she ended up taking us to see the other two when they were released
There’s an interview I’ve heard of but never found in which a journalist was trying to interview Leslie, the prominent actor, and his brother Erik, who happened to be Canada’s Minister of Defence. The problem was that both of them had the same sense of humour and one had the fart box and the two of them spent the interview giggling like five year olds. It has to be out there somewhere.
Actually Erik was Deputy Prime Minister. It really shines through when hearing them that they've both got that deadpan humour nailed down but frankly, it's just Danish dad humour. Every Danish kid knows this style of comedy but it's only when you see it being done so expertly by Leslie Nielsen that you realise that your own dad was actually a budding comedy genius himself.

Leslie Neilsen's brother Erik was a Member of Parliament from Yukon for years, and even served as Deputy Prime Minister under PM Brian Mulroney from '84-86. The airport for Yukon's Capital city Whitehorse is named in his memory.

Police Squad was genius. A lot of this work still holds up brilliantly.
I miss the guy. He's been so influential to me. My sense of humour has been carved out of his comedy. What a blessing he was. May he rest in peace.

That last line about him being less serious about his own life is a genuine advice. Might sound odd but it’s one of the truest ways to stop seeing negativity around you.

I saw naked gun at a drive-in double feature in 89 when I was 10. Major League was the other movie. Good times. Also went back later that summer and saw gremlins 2/weekend at Bernies double feature.
I saw Wrongfully Accused in theaters and thought he was hilarious.

The National Anthem and the entire baseball game sequence in 'The Naked Gun' is one of the most classic deadpan moments in cinema history. That entire movie is slapstick gold.
That was all filmed at 'Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle Hospital' :-D.

The fact that he was Canadian in real life adds to the hilarity of him singing (or not singing) the US anthem.
The only other actor I've seen able to deliver lines like Leslie Nielsen is probably Steve Carell. His ability to keep a straight face really comes through in Get Smart.

i remember being socially awkward in high school and i couldnt connect to anyone. then i made a couple of jokes with this one kid and we realized we were both leslie nielsen fans. we were best friends all throughout high school and deadpan humor was our thing.

R.I.P to comedy legend Leslie Nielson. He totally re-invented himself and the world of comedy will never be the same again.
He also re-invented the wheel. He tried to have it patented, too; but the patent office would have none of that.

If you were around back then, in the 60's he played a police detective in hundreds and hundreds of black and white TV crime dramas. No exaggeration. A large part of what made him so funny was how engrained that character was in our memories and how he had the same deadpan persona in all the silly comedies he did in the 80's and 90's. "Reinvented" is exactly the right word!

I once ran into Leslie Nielsen in a bistro in West Hollywood. I had a group of pals and this was our favorite Sunday brunch spot. This was '86 or '87, after the Airplane movies. Of course, you can't not recognize him. I shook his hand and said "I hope they are paying you about 500 times what they must have paid you in the 60's in the 723 cop shows I saw you in". He just gave me a big smile and said "Thanks!".

The fact that he’s saying that to “the dude everyone knows as Joe Patroni”, arguably the most daddy-tastic character of the 70’s disaster genre, delivered by George Kennedy himself in deadpan-comedy mode, makes it that much more delicious

I remember being a real young child in the 90’s watching his movies. I found his performances to be the funniest, and I would often tell other kids in my elementary school that he was my favorite actor. My classmates had no idea who he was, but I wasn’t ashamed to tell them about his movies. I would bring my elementary school friends over and watch The Naked Gun with them. I remember when he passed away in 2010, it was really big news for me at the time. Nobody seemed to have known him or cared, but it felt like I had lost a personal friend.
The man was a legend. I watched his movies as a teen and loved all the clever humor in the Naked Gun films. Shame that the show was cancelled so soon. The humor was smart and you had to pay attention to it which made it so good. I was hooked.
I remember myself child watching naked gun on tv on Sundays(in Italy when is aired is usually on sundays) eating ice cream :).

Leslie Nielsen was my idol when I was a kid. I have a signed photo of him as Frank Drebin, and I'll treasure it for a very very long time.

Leslie Nielsen was amazing. I also really loved Dracula Dead and Loving it, highly underrated.
I agree. He was funny in that movie. My favourite scene of him is the one with Mina and Essie. Where he was giving order from outside. Of course wouln't forget Peter McNichols' line, "Wrong me!Wrong me! Wrong my brains out!" Which was one time my ringing tone.
Imagine having a career in film that was okay. Imagine then having an even bigger career when you thought you were done and then finding your true calling as a comedy icon. A lot of who I am and the silly way I act is thanks to Leslie Nielsen as my go to films have always been Airplane! and The Naked Gun Trilogy. What an absolute legend! People like Leslie are missed on a daily basis. The world today is far too serious and we need the greatest ever slapstick showman to remind us that it's just life! Hope you're resting in peace, Leslie. Your films will continue to make us laugh (and our kids and kids' kids!)
I've seen Airplane! and the Naked Gun series countless times and yet still chuckled at each of their clips like it was the first I'd seen them. RIP, Leslie Nielsen.
I've seen those movies also countless times an I love them. The amount of small details they put in them is amazing. You can watch them 10 times and still see something new that makes you chuckle.
That's another thing great about his humor skills: We can watch and enjoy each one again, and again. 3 Stooges had that capability too. Most comedians you don't want to see the same bit so much.
Airplane!, Police Squad and TNG trilogy will always remain some of the best comedy ever made. So many others have since tried to copy that style but none ever came close to the wit and charm of the originals. ZAZ are such amazingly talented comedic writers and Nielsen was the perfect guy to deliver it.
End end of every Police Squad episode where the main cast freeze frames, like so many shows, but the scene and some side characters keep moving was always so clever and hilarious. The TV show is certainly worth watching!
Rich Gilly I find it so hard to describe these scenes and get people to imagine how hilarious they are. Watching them play out, however; absolute comedy genius!
In the same way the end gags of every episode of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law where everyone laughs at something is totally like that.
Or the intro of every episode, where the guest star instantly gets killed and the episode itself is tagged and announced with two completely different titles simultaneously. Completely genius.

I loved Leslie Nielsen ..grew up with the naked guns and those movie was so Prominent in my childhood..always saying movie quotes with friends..laughing all the way…thank you Leslie !!!

Leslie Nielsen was one of my dad's and my very favorites. We watched "Airplane!" together a million times. Mel Brooks movies were also huge in our household. RIP to Leslie Nielsen, Gene Wilder, Chloris Leachman, Betty White, Lloyd Bridges, Richard Pryor, Anne Bancroft, Norman Lear, and so many other comic geniuses who made several generations laugh till it hurt. And, or course, RIP to my dad. He was also a one-of-a-kind comic talent.😊

I have only ever shed a tear at the death of 2 actors in my life, one of them was Robin Williams and the other was Leslie Nielson. This man was a legend.
I have third one, but he was finnish actor, so won't tell you anything. :) But another two were the same for me.

I didn't see naked gun until about 2015 and it instantly became one of my favourite comedy films ever, I had to watch the others straight after. His delivery is so perfect, I wish he had made more films like this, I would have watched them all.
Him laughing hysterically after having just seen Platoon is one of my favorite gags ever.
God bless him for hanging in there, and giving us some of the best comedy we have to this day.

When I first heard that, I thought he had said "I'm Al Oxsmith and I'm a locksmith". Yeah, stupid, but don't judge me, English isn't my native tongue. I still laughed at it, though.
What I feel is missing here is that he had severe knee problems, arthritis, and he was in serious pain whilst he had to run and jump and duck all the time, but he was brave and never let it ruin his temper.
Leslie Nielsen was, hands down, the greatest deadpan comedy actor of all time. May he RIP. There will never be another

I was obsessed with old scifi films as a little kid, it took me years to realize he was the same actor in forbidden planet that I’d seen late one night on tv, when I later watched Airplane in theatres. Such an amazing actor.
Leslie in Freakshow is a favorite role of mine too. He plays the dark, apathetic villain so well, I would have loved to see him in more serious roles like that. Just the right amount of comedy mixed in.

Leslie Nielsen will always be The King of Parody. In the late 2000's, parody devolved into nothing but childish humor and never-ending pop-culture references, and it's never recovered. Leslie brought such a strong talent to that comedy sub-genre, and set the bar so high that no one could compete. R.I.P.
Yeah, ever since Scary Movie, parody evolved from the wittiest to the dumbest form of comedy. The films of ZAZ and Mel Brooks were really smart and subtle, nowadays it's all just random pop cultural references, toilet humor and sex jokes.
Growing up in one of the post-soviet countries with limited access to hollywood movies in the 90s it was such a refreshing experience to watch Naked Gun movies. Thank you for your work, Mr.Nielsen

Leslie was my hero growing up, I always wanted to meet him. He died when I was 15. Every girlfriend I’ve had since then has had to endure Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Squad and countless interviews. The man is a comedic genius. One of the last true greats.
For the longest time I always knew him as a comedic actor, then I caught the episode of Creepshow and said, wow, Leslie has some range. Little did I know he hand an entire career before starting comedy.
Leslie was fantastic in a recurring role in the TV Series Due South. He was both funny and touching. An underrated Dramedy that few people saw about a Canadian Mountie in Chicago on the trail of his father's killer.
The greatest comedy trilogy of all time. The man was an absolute master at deadpan delivery. Even after all this time I still love the naked gun movies so much.
Best comedic deadpan actor ever in the funniest film trilogy ever. The comedic style of both Nielsen and the ZAZ spoof films have been copied a million times since then but none of them ever came close to the wit and charm of the originals. The bottom of the barrel are the Seltzer/Friedberg atrocities.

I'm old enough to remember his 'serious' acting on 70s TV. Being surprised & amused by his role in Airplane, totally out of, but also in character. You did a great job showcasing his acting, didn't learn anything I didn't know, but loved how you presented this legend's career
I love in the first and second one, he gets an object thrown at him, in the first one it it a pillow, the second it is a towel, and acts like it is stuck to his face and causing him harm

My favourite thing about his fart jokes is that they're not just thrown out randomly. Leslies puts in the thought and effort to think about the best time to use them. Not just in the sense of "where is the best place to put an obvious fart joke?" but "where would a realistic place be to put a fart?". He had to balance timing with realism with these kinds of jokes and every time he didn't hit gold, he hit diamonds.
Leslie Nielsen was a funny grandpa, a handsome grandpa, and a household name in the states, quite possibly the entire continent of North America, and maybe even the world. We are less without him, but we would've been even less had he never graced us, with his wonderous presence. May we cherish all of the memories he has given us, and may his soul rest in eternal peace, for this funny man, has definitely earned it. Godspeed Police Squad, god speed.

I’ve seen creep show that was absolutely outstanding I remember watching it for the first time and how nonchalantly he acted the serial killer literally as if displaying zero remorse was absolutely perfect

There has been a lot of actors who have made me chuckle but there was only one who consistently left me howling out loud and gasping for breath with laughter. You're very correct in saying there won't be another Leslie Nielsen. The world of film comedy has never been the same since.
