Mr. Matthau's Mom & my Mom were on the same floor at Mount Sinai Hospital, in Miami Beach. He & my Dad would see each other in the hallway & ask for updates on "the Moms". One evening when my Sister, my oldest Niece, & I came to visit Mom, he & his wife, Carol, past us in the lobby. Well, as soon as he saw my Niece, with her flaming red hair, just like Carol's, he immediately came over to us, asked my Sister if he could hold her & started talking with her. My Niece was about 2 at the time. She is now 49 & still talks about how Walter Matthau held her in his arms & had a conversation with her.
Walter did have it. I worked at a bank in Beverly Hills which was located across from his tailor's shop. One day I saw him, and I ran out of the bank and said hello to him. He was so kind. We stood on that sidewalk for at least 30 minutes talking. Everyone in the bank had their faces pressed against the glass of the windows. It was something. I'll never forget his humor and kindness.
Very endearing to see Walter speak and realize he's just naturally funny. Funny in a quiet, clever way. And no bland fake front put on for the public. A very lovable man.
I remember being a kid and seeing him for the first time, i just loved him. His face is a work of art and i just couldn't get enough of him. I can't believe there was no mention of his role in The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Its my favourite movie of all time.
I can not count the number of times I,be watched the odd couple the delivery of the dialogue between Walter matthau and Jack Lemmon is just brilliant I can not get enough of that kind of humour.
My grandmother was a huge Walter Matthau fan. By sheer luck they happen to be shooting the supermarket scene for Grumpier Old Men at a location just down the street from her in St. Paul, MN back in 1995. This 80 year old woman spent an entire day sitting on a folding chair outside the supermarket where they were inside filming waiting to see a glimpse of Matthau. Late in the day he finally emerged accompanied by an assistant, they ushered him quickly into a waiting car before she could even try to speak to him. She wasn't having it. As the car pulled away she ran after it, eventually caught up and started banging on the passenger side window where Matthau was seated yelling "I love you, I love you!" The car came to a stop, Matthau's window rolled down, and he reached out a gave her a huge hug!! Absolutely crazy and unforgettable scene!!!
One of the Greatest actors ever, definitely in my top 3. If Walter was in any film, then you could guarantee that it was going to be good, and you can't say that about many actors. A real LEGEND! R.I.P to a truly wonderful man. Thanks for the countless joy you gave me!
One of my very favorites since I was little! His movies like A New Leaf, Bad News Bears, and The Sunshine Boys, as well as of course The Odd Couple, have given me hours and hours of joy!
I recently saw "Bad News Bears" for the first time, what, 40 years late? It was a big deal in its day, but now an icon of changing society. I adore Matthau, but the character would be prosecuted for child abuse now.
I happened on this recently onTCM. Interesting coincidence that he (again) replaced Cary Grant, who couldn't be talked into the river rescue. I don't think Matthau was entirely convincing as the spoiled aristocrat, but as his scenes of taking care of the hapless woman get rolling, he is magnificent.
Mr. Matthau was talented, gifted, funny, and charming. An attractive face is fleeting, but a captivating personality is one of many attributes that contributes in the unity of humanity.
I met him once at a buffet brunch in Los Angeles. As we helped ourselves he asked about my accent (Australian) and explained to me what “lox” was and showed me how to put it on a bagel. The best lox and bagels were to be found in New York he said. We had a brief chat and I thought what a nice man, who was, and who looked vaguely familiar. When I got back to my table my friends (whose guest I was) asked me “What did Walter Matthau say to you?”
He died 20 years ago today God Bless Him! He is so missed! What a wonderful and talented actor he was. He gave such joy and continues to do so in all the films he left behind. He was a very good dramatic actor. People forget because once he did comedy that was it, but he was great at drama and should have done more.
He was GREAT! definitely one of the greatest EVER! Of all his incredible roles... I still love watching The Bad News Bears! An absolute classic- hysterical- heartwarming- raunchy- A movie they could never make again!
While driving down temescal canyon road in Pacific Palisades, towards the PCH, ( that was Pacific coast highway, I saw himself, Walter Mathau & wanted to roll down the window, and yell to him, "hello, Mr. Mathau", but I was alone in mom's Dodge charger & only had my license permit, so I just kept driving! Oh well, sometimes you your chances & sometimes you just gotta keep on driving!!!!!!!
I grew up when the Odd Couple television show with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman was popular and I loved the show. I actually never saw the movie until recently and it literally had me in stitches. Walter Matthau was incredible...The way he played off and reacted to Jack Lemmon was priceless. I ended up watching the movie several times over just because he was so funny.
It's so funny I agree with you 100% And yet I do disagree with you 100%, he's just one of those type of guys. Hard to pin down hard to place never seen him in a bad movie or role. Kind of flies under and over the radar. Almost like Richard widmark on the level of bogey almost but not quite
Yes , check out the movie "Goodbye Charlie" (1964) he played a foreign movie director and he made me laugh. On the other hand he played a crook on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and he dressed up as a cop to silence a woman because she could identify his partner. He played the role with sangfroid , you would have believed he was a working class cop. When I saw the look on his face as he killed the woman it really scared me. He looked like a psycho killer.😳😳
I liked Walter Matthau I remember Loving to see Grumpy Old Men with him and Jack Lemmon and The Odd Couple fabulous the real classic another movie he kind of played a the villain in strangers when we meet with Kim Novak and Kirk Douglas and another movie where I really hated his character because he was so good in the movie with Elvis Presley King Creole he played the bad guy he was very convincing
Interesting watching this video on him because when I first saw him I immediately thought he had it also something very substantial and beautiful so I do like with Jack Lemmon is saying about him in this video not a surprise to me I've always enjoyed Walter Matthau so much
@Leo Peridot Barbara stanwyck, Meryl streep were never considered sex symbol. Also there are many more women who were unattractive but were playing leading ladies. Katherine hepburn, judy garland, Barbara streisand, Sarah Jessica parker, Glenn close, Tilda Swinton, Uma Thurman, Helena Bonham Carter, Bette davis, Amanda seyfried, Madonna, Jean Harlow, Saoirse ranon, Elisabeth Moss, Goldie Hawn and many more. Sarah Jessica Parker is not considered a sex symbol but still get leading parts. You said Jennifer anniston was a sex symbol so were a lot of men you listed like Mickey Rourke, Christopher Walken, Christopher Lee.
I searched for this video this morning I felt like I needed a boost to my spirit and I remember this bio a diamond in the rough discovering Walter Matthau's God given talent and heart. There is just something about some of these older gentleman like Jack Lemmon Walter Matthau Paul Newman Robert Redford Gregory Peck Clark Gable Kirk Douglas Omar Sharif and probably a few more than I just cannot think of right now but gurnick my admiration respect and very easy on the eyes! Not every Star has a class of the gentleman that I just mentioned
Walter Matthau was so funny in CHARADE, I couldn't guess how that movie would turn out when I first saw it. That was an inspired performance for that movie.
Mr. Matthau was, and is thanks to UA-cam one of our great actors who could choose his own parts and did. Whatever he’s in, it’s never a dull moment. And he has a big enough heart to “carry” some lesser skilled actors.
After seeing this bio of Walter Matthau my heart thrust open some tears. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed listening to his peers and Friends talk about him. I'm not surprised but I was overjoyed that they exalted him because he has been through a lot of these beginnings and he aspired 2 develop his highest creative potential in order to Fender off the Ultimate Reality of the pain when can suffer in life via very creative fashion by speaking to truth 2 characters , therefore it naturally became funny. His Consciousness to do that I believe that was part of his genius
OMG. I thought his son was Anthony Perkins at first. For a while until his name popped up. He looks exactly like him. I always loved this man. He the guy you want around at a party/family get together. RIP.
He was such a great actor ,you believe in the character he portrays. It seems effortless, but it's not. Thank you for this video, I enjoyed watching it.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is supposed to be based on his wife. She said that Walter was the best lover she ever had. It was hard for me to imagine him as an excellent lover,
I have always liked Walter Matthau. I think that I have almost seen all of his movies. I like his look, he can play serious roles, comedic roles and he was great in " The Taking of One, Two, Three. I think he was so good in that, but be was very talented and fun to watch.

One of my all-time favorite actors! The Kentuckian was a great film. One of his movies that I don't thin did very well at the box office was the movie, "Charlie Varrick", released in 1973. I think it was one of his best!
In all his films, there was something about him that made him extremely likeable.
What a guy.. took his brothers place in the draft because he knew his brother supported his family. So selfless. Such a great actor.
When Walter smiled his entire face smiled...and so did everyone watching him. 😄

Very endearing to see Walter speak and realize he's just naturally funny. Funny in a quiet, clever way. And no bland fake front put on for the public. A very lovable man.
He was in a movie "The Fortune Cookie". He played a lawyer. The line I will always remember "Don't get angry. Sue the bastards."
It's one of my favorites!

Man I miss Walter and Jack, so glad they were laid to rest so close to one another. Two once in a lifetime actors.
I was watching Parkinson show with Walter and Jack, so funny I love them.

Thank you Walter for not only the memories of the films 🎥 you made but for being you. Your true self. Thanks for the laughs. 😘❤
Walter's son, Charlie loved him so much he bought the house beside him just to be near♥️
Matthau is great. So much better than most of the on-screen actors nowadays.
Every generation says the same thing; it's what grumps rely on.
Irresistibly loveable. A truly GREAT Actor.

Me too wonderful movie

Yes great comment
Ossie Davis was such a class act!
Ossie is so funny in the movie the scalp hunters. Great actor.
Such a great actor. I am lucky I grew up when great films were being made along with great TV. Golden days.

To hear Walter Matthau telling his story is such a treat. I really miss him. Thank you for sharing this.
I know right! He recounts his experiences so seamlessly and entertainingly.
Yes, thanks for sharing it. He was great in roles as villians, too, like in "Charade" with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.
Villain or comic role: he is great.
Don’t we all
Yes he was just hilarious!
He was GREAT! definitely one of the greatest EVER! Of all his incredible roles... I still love watching The Bad News Bears! An absolute classic- hysterical- heartwarming- raunchy- A movie they could never make again!

You mean "overestimated". He is underestimated all the time. And largely forgotten by the younger folks.
I'm 19 and I am big fan of Walter Matthau the younger generation is forgetting the greats they are getting underrated now like Robert mitchum

I loved him in Kotch... the scene where he is trying to assemble a dollhouse for his granddaughter on Christmas eve is a hoot.
Walter Matthau was so funny in CHARADE, I couldn't guess how that movie would turn out when I first saw it. That was an inspired performance for that movie.

What an actor. His scene with the gorgeous Ingrid Bergman in Cactus Flower made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the upload.
Matthau was a genuine Movie Star ⭐️💫
Great actor and a gentleman ❤️
And so funny!
Very few character actors have also been leading men in films in the way Walter Matthau was. Few again have demonstrated his range. He played heavies, he played leading men in tense dramas. He was a comedic actor who delivered grouchiness with charm. His screen partnership with Jack Lemmon is an adornment to the movie industry to this day
Bad News Bears is one of my favorites. "It's common knowledge for crying out loud." Use that one myself from time to time.
Walther Matthau and Jack Lemmon are my two favourite actors! Their magic on the screen was unbelievable. Just terrific!
They're like family, not many artists can say that.
