Hey David, I'd love a recommendation for a knife that would help me as an HVAC tech. Typical things being cut are cardboard, tape, foam, wire insulation, zipties, and aluminum tape. I'm good with fixed or folding, but if possible, under 100 would be awesome. And if you happen to have a multitool recommendation as well, thatd rock.
Holy crap David! I’ve asked a question in the past about a somewhat premium knife with good steel that has a bottle opener & I think I just found it in the Hogue Microswitch!
Hey DCA, I know sometimes a knife might be almost perfect if it just had a finger choil or an ambidextrous pocket clip etc. Which knives in your opinion would be perfect or better if they just had ... Thanks I really enjoy these KnifAQ videos.
Please do a video on "suit knives". These would be knives as light and slim profile as possible, with a clip for the inside of a suit or tuxedo jacket. Bottle opener function would be a bonus. (This is different than gentleman knives, which seem to focus on looks and tend to stay the pants pocket or in a desk drawer.)
Hey DCA. Im getting in to Stock-removal knifemaking. Which steel do you recommend buying when it comes to it being easy to heattreat? I know you have lots of experience with custom knifemaking.
BrandNameDoves and any other Canadians watching this video: it’s worth noting that automatic knives are illegal in all of Canada. So purchase, “import”, and carry at your own legal risk.
What would you recommend for a good quality chef's knife that will not rust as easily? My wife and I were gifted a set of 3 Shun knives and they all rusted. We also bought a Hen & Rooster block set that rusted. I used Aegis Solutions EDCi on them and hand washed them all. We aren't professional cooks, just home cooks, so nothing too fancy or expensive. Thanks!!
Hey DCA and Friends, my Cold Steel Spartan in AUS10A has developed some rust spots (very minor, easily removable). I was curious if a forced patina would be a good move. If so, how should I go about doing so?
As far as small knives, both with 2.25 inch sharpened edge, the CJRB Maileah or the Civivi Odium would be my recommendations. I have larger than average hands and both designs are easy to manipulate, and work well for me
Hey DCA, I've been looking at picking up my first fixed blade for EDC. I've been looking at the Bradford Guardian 3, do you have any other recommendations for me to check out? Scout carry or another discreet carry option is a plus. Thanks
I have a Guardian 3. Love it. The only critique I have is the scout carry leather sheath it came with is too tight for my belts. I end up carrying it in my pocket instead. I need to get a narrower belt, and just haven’t had the chance to make that purchase.
Ive got a Guardian 3.5, an Esee 3, and a Ka-Bar BK14 that I rotate for EDC. The Esee has definitely spent the most time on my belt, but Ive also had it the longest of the three. One downside of the Esee, IMO, is the sheath/clip - I ended up getting a custom Kydex scout carry sheath off Etsy. I like the BK14 because I can carry it in/on my waistband or belt upright, so it's less likely to snag on things vs scout carry. All that said, I think the Guardian is gonna replace the two, at least for now. It's got a similar handle shape & feel to a Esee Izula II/BK14, but just feels...better. The sheath belt loop does start pretty tight, but mine has started to relax. My next fixed blade purchase will probably be a Guardian3
If I ever had $150 to fritter away I would have had a guardian by now. I really like the looks of it. If I didn't have a bucket full of other fixed blades probably would on the guardian.
I’ve had a G3 for about a year and a half now, and it is hands down the blade I carry the most. It’s always on my belt or in my purse. I got one in M390 because I love the steel, and it is just a wonderful little beast.
I have the Sakura bokote chef's knife and it's really excellent. The high blade with a curved edge is exactly what I was looking for and could not find it in pretty much any other knife.
Axial Gear DART & SHIFT… You need to check them out; a Friend had both and way cool. Went to buy them on your page; but not available. So I ordered them elsewhere!
Hi DCA 👋 In your opinion: at which point the blade lenght of a folding knife becomes "impractical"? (Disregarding self defense, how small and how big?) In my opinion it is below 2 inches and above 5 inches, thoughts?
From a army grunts perspective (My Brother in law) folders shouldn't be used but if so 4-5 inches is lovely for deep cuts. And with training 2-3 inches will be enough to cut joints arteries and tendons. Also knives are a last ditch defense be careful an respect your tool.
@@TheBudgetguy_K.T Thanks for the answer man 👍 but the question was diregarding the self defense angle, i.e as a day to day tool not a weapon. Anyway, the reply is appreciated 😅
A full flat wharncliff exocet might be the ultimate fifth pocket knife if you are looking for an idea for an exclusive. Of course we need a couple of finish options including the bounty hunter.
Yes! Been asking this question forever, as a big guy with big hands I really like the handle on the rat 1 it's comfortable and fits my hands nicely, just wish you could have it with the rat 2 blade
I am guessing here but I would think that if you bought one of each you could put the rat two blade in the rat one. IIRC, I have a rat 2. If I can find it I'll see if the blades are interchangeable and get back to you.
I found my R2D2. I took them both apart. It looked like it was possible, but the pivot on the R1 is larger. Mine measured 15/16" with my digital micrometer. That is a very common drill bit size. I am not sure that I would try to freehand the hole. A drill press would provide much better control. If things didn't work out you would only be out the price of the Rat2. But then you could always blame me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Hi, DCA. I was wondering if you could discuss some of the pros and cons of a secondary convex grind, and a secondary v-grind edge geometry in regards to bushcrafting knives, and if you had any recommendations for sharpening systems for both?
Hi, DCA & Crew! Happy holidays. Was wondering if there ever might be a folding knife in the Nordsmith line & if so, what manufacturers might you consider working with for the build?
The wife just made a comment that I will pass along. She said that every time you say your catch phrase she thinks of the Rockbitter from The Neverending Story… I almost died laughing. “The Nothing pulled them from My Slightly Larger Than Average Hands” So that will be stuck in my head forever now.
I have a Zwilling Kramer Carbon paring knife that I bought a few years ago. Its my favorite knife. It's developed a nice patina that proves to anyone visiting my kitchen that I actually spend time there. What other options are available for carbon steel kitchen knives?
I am a avid cyclist and carried a Boker Subcom with me because it was small, light, and unobtrusive when clipped to a jersey pocket. My cycling buddies thought it was funny that I carried a knife when cycling, but didn't laugh when they got to see how useful a small knife was when out on the bike. I used it to remove tiny objects from tires that caused flats and in one case, self defense against a pit bull. Sad to say that I lost it after a small spill when riding singletrack on my mtn bike. Definitely need to purchase another, but this time in titanium
@@jayr526 Well, to be honest I took the one I had apart and under the FRN handle it was severely rusted from sweat. I cleaned it up as well as possible and put a generous amount of grease under the handle piece to help prevent farther corrosion. Besides, I no longer carry my knife I have for cycling now just clipped to my jersey pocket, especially when mtn biking
Question: I want to purchase the “Benchmade Auto Triage” but it’s out of stock on the actual website. I saw it for sale on your website. If I buy this knife, will it come new and in a box?
just bc benchmade themselves is out of stock doesn’t mean a vendor is, benchmade sends a bunch out to every dealer when they make some but also sell some themselves. difference vendors do business at different rates, it’s just like how walmart may be out of coca cola but target still has it.
8:17 here in South Korea, someone who try to buy auto knife(including OTF) that has cutting edge longer then 5cm(1.9685 inch) have to register that knife to local police office. If he choose manual folder rather than auto, he can allowed 1 more cm - total 6cm(2.3622 inch) - and fixed blades are allowed to 15cm(5.9055 inch). if he buying some longer than allowed kinves and register that at he's city's police office and move home to another city, he must re-register all that knives again at that city's police office. what a fantasy world :) but that rule does not apply to chef knife, machete, axe, blade that include in multitool, ....etc..... because this rule made to restrict "weapons". interesting, isn't it?
So odd that actually have to register knives. Then that kitchen knives lenght doesnt matter like other fixed blades even though its maybe the most common knife used in stabbings. Well weapon laws rarely make sense to me. Here in Finland owning knives is easy, but carrying them in public is quite heavily restricted. Any bladed tool you need reason for carrying, and its completely up to officers to decide if the reason is good enough. In small towns people dont tend to care though if someone has sheath knife openly on belt especially in hunting season.
Hey David, I started collecting knives about a year ago and have really dove head first into the hobby, how long have you been collecting knives now and what is the oldest knife in your collection?
Hi David, I remember as a kid you could find in the junk draw a stainless steel looking Swiss army knife with just U.S. stamped on it. We use to refer those as army knives. Was those Swiss army made ? Don't see those around anymore. Also check out the Sitivein s103 knives from Amazon. Great Cheap knife.
Rick A. is a paragon of self-awareness. He could go with the standard, "I'm a big man, I need a big knife" philosophy, and he'd end up with a Demko (not that there's anything wrong with that) to open the packages we all face down daily. Most of us end up with more blade than we really need. What he needs, what I'm sure DCA would have recommended if not for availability, is a Spyderco Lil' Native. Using the finger choil, it fits my XL mits perfectly, and in that position I have blade control like I'm using a Mora 120. Sure, the blade stock is thicker than necessary, but the high, flat grind keeps it slicey, and it gives it a bigger knife feel to comfort our big guy egos. Rick should get on the waiting lists, and keep an eye out for sprints and exclusives. I hopped off the G-10 waiting list to jump on a carbon fiber, s90v version, and despite the sprint run surcharge I'm thrilled with it.

Great video! I do have a question. From what I have read online nitro-v steel is really optimal when it's run around 61 or 62. Most comments that I have read say that a softer HRC keeps the steel from being anything special. What are your opinions of the steel and especially what do you think the HRC should be. If I found a production knife in this range I would have already bought it.
Hi David! I love the look and feel of the Benchmade Mini Crooked River, but I’m not a fan of the axis lock. I’d like to hear your suggestions for a similar knife with a metal bolster and wood handle, with a different locking mechanism, yet still able to open/close one handed. Thanks!
I loathe Spyderco knives and as a knife guy, I feel like I shouldn't. I'm also not ignorant to the fact that I am more than likely missing out on something. Are there any Spyderco knives that aren't so... Spyderco?
I find it interesting how adamant people are in their dislike for spyderco in general. Looks aren’t everything. Although I don’t care for lock backs I find myself really enjoying The Sage5 and Chaparral models. The Kapara is a must have as is the Spydie Chef.
I hate the looks but love the in hand functionality. They are fantastic if you get over the looks. The compression lock is my favorite. Extremely easy one hand operation. I think a lot of people like the fidget factor which is there but I don’t really care for doing that. For use of cutting things alone, spyderco has it in spades for feeling like an extension of your own hand

I work in the Facilities Department at my work. The Leatherman Crunch is perfect. Locking pliers, screwdrivers and serrated knife.
A k390 spyderco folder like the delica, endela, endura, stretch 2, or police 4 would be my choice for that type of material you would be cutting
Milwaukee makes a couple of fixed blades for this purpose. They were about $20 last time I looked.
Mora Companion
Met the owners of Revo at Scheels All Sports last night. Fantastic people. Bought a Warden from them. Just fantastic value knives for the quality.
Holy crap David! I’ve asked a question in the past about a somewhat premium knife with good steel that has a bottle opener & I think I just found it in the Hogue Microswitch!
The DPX knives are also an option but they are pricey.
Every knife can be used as a bottle opener, just like a lighter. Use your index finger as a fulcrum, they pop right off.
For the small, sub 3" folder:
1. Spydeco Para 3 - ✂️ ng edge is 2.5"
2. Cold steel Tuff Lite
Hey David. I think Evil Canival jumped the “Snake river” if I’m not mistaken. 🐍
*attempted* to jump. Not his finest hour.
That’s true.
Yup. Shoulda made a note this time around, but it came to me in the moment lol -DCA
Hey DCA, I know sometimes a knife might be almost perfect if it just had a finger choil or an ambidextrous pocket clip etc. Which knives in your opinion would be perfect or better if they just had ... Thanks I really enjoy these KnifAQ videos.
Sandrin knives torino, if only the edge went all the way to the finger choil. I don’t know why it has both a finger choil and a sharpening choil.
I’m interested in this also
Dig the blow gun white elephant idea! Another short blade long handle option is the Emerson CQC14.
Hey DCA. Im getting in to Stock-removal knifemaking. Which steel do you recommend buying when it comes to it being easy to heattreat? I know you have lots of experience with custom knifemaking.
1075 or 1084. 1095 is a little more finicky. Start easy, gain some confidence, then work your way to more complicated steels. -DCA
If you want a full sized handle with a shorter blade :Get an Endura and sand it down to Delica length. You get a stout work blade with a full handle.
Thanks!!
The story about the Kershaw's composite blade was interesting.
I would like to see more "behind the curtain" stuff like that in future videos.
Hi DCA 👋
In your opinion: at which point the blade lenght of a folding knife becomes "impractical"? (Disregarding self defense, how small and how big?)
In my opinion it is below 2 inches and above 5 inches, thoughts?
From a army grunts perspective (My Brother in law) folders shouldn't be used but if so 4-5 inches is lovely for deep cuts. And with training 2-3 inches will be enough to cut joints arteries and tendons. Also knives are a last ditch defense be careful an respect your tool.
@@TheBudgetguy_K.T
Thanks for the answer man 👍
but the question was diregarding the self defense angle, i.e as a day to day tool not a weapon.
Anyway, the reply is appreciated 😅
Lol my bad didn't have my glasses on. Same theory applies 4-5 for long deep draw cuts and 2-4 for strings and box processing
She said that every time you say your catch phrase she thinks of the Rockbitter from The Neverending Story…
I almost died laughing.
“The Nothing pulled them from My Slightly Larger Than Average Hands”
So that will be stuck in my head forever now.
Pardon me for biting in, but it seems like one with FRN handles would be a better idea. Losing that would be much less painful than one with titanium.
Looking for a seax in both fixed and folder what are your recommendations?
Hey man, I’m looking for something similar to a benchmade 940, but in the $50-$120 range. If you have any suggestions I’d appreciate it.
Question: I want to purchase the “Benchmade Auto Triage” but it’s out of stock on the actual website. I saw it for sale on your website. If I buy this knife, will it come new and in a box?
Yes.
Yes, we only sell new knives, nothing is second-hand. -DCA
just bc benchmade themselves is out of stock doesn’t mean a vendor is, benchmade sends a bunch out to every dealer when they make some but also sell some themselves. difference vendors do business at different rates, it’s just like how walmart may be out of coca cola but target still has it.
8:17 here in South Korea, someone who try to buy auto knife(including OTF) that has cutting edge longer then 5cm(1.9685 inch) have to register that knife to local police office. If he choose manual folder rather than auto, he can allowed 1 more cm - total 6cm(2.3622 inch) - and fixed blades are allowed to 15cm(5.9055 inch). if he buying some longer than allowed kinves and register that at he's city's police office and move home to another city, he must re-register all that knives again at that city's police office. what a fantasy world :)
but that rule does not apply to chef knife, machete, axe, blade that include in multitool, ....etc..... because this rule made to restrict "weapons". interesting, isn't it?
So odd that actually have to register knives. Then that kitchen knives lenght doesnt matter like other fixed blades even though its maybe the most common knife used in stabbings. Well weapon laws rarely make sense to me. Here in Finland owning knives is easy, but carrying them in public is quite heavily restricted. Any bladed tool you need reason for carrying, and its completely up to officers to decide if the reason is good enough. In small towns people dont tend to care though if someone has sheath knife openly on belt especially in hunting season.
@@lalli8152 Yeah, Finnish knife laws suck.. that's why I carry my folders deep in the pocket without pocket clip 😁
I'm wondering when screw drivers are going to be restricted. Sharpening three sides of a 5/16 inch tip would make a devastating weapon.
Probably a Demolition Knife, or Demo knife. Lots of those made by Camillus back in the day. -DCA
Rick A. is a paragon of self-awareness.
I can agree with that! Handled the Lil Native, and it fits so good with the choil! Glove size 12-13.
I'm pretty sure that Evil tried to jump the Snake River, just out side of Twin Falls ID, not the Wind River
Hey David talking about steels for small 5th pocket knives which would you choose between d2, 154cm or n690 keep in mind That I want to know your choice and also th regular tasks I have which is to open boxes food preparing, cutting small pieces of wood to start a Fire cutting rope and common simple materials thanks in advance David
Hey DCA and crew, any of you EDC a fixed blade? If so, what are your favorites?
I bought the Bestech Goblin from KC in early 2019 to replace my Spyderco Dragonfly. I honestly didn't think I'd still have it as my go to keychain knife nearly three years later. I initially wanted the Bestech Engine, which I'm still thinking about getting someday. Pricy... but, GREAT knife.
Totally agree on the Nessmuk. Should definitely be a flat grind.
What are your suggestions for a sheath extention? I have a Buck 105 which I love, but the handle digs into my side. As a result I'd like to extend the sheath lower on the hip, which will give better access to my knife as well. What do you suggest?
Greetings David and Snarky. Can you do an episode on Nessmuks? Sizes, materials, grinds, brands, etc. Thanks.
Cold Steel war hawk or American Tomahawk model 2 synthetic? Is there really $200 extra in value there? I am looking for something as functional as a hatchet but lighter and throwable for campground fun. Bonus question: what belt knife would you pair a hawk with?
Have a safe and healthy holiday season folks. And if you are out at a gathering get a designated driver 😉👍🏻 save your money for your collection not a lawyer.
I have been using the gerber flatiron and really love it, but wanted to see what other clever styles edc knives would you recommend
Hi David! I love the look and feel of the Benchmade Mini Crooked River, but I’m not a fan of the axis lock. I’d like to hear your suggestions for a similar knife with a metal bolster and wood handle, with a different locking mechanism, yet still able to open/close one handed. Thanks!
I think Lionsteel and other Italian makers might be the only ones with with normal production knives falling under those parameters.
What don't you like about the lock? I've been carrying mine for 4 years, it's a great knife.
No, there aren’t. People either love or hate them. They’re all well made, and all overpriced.
Little big knife options - Spy Opera or Fox TUR.
Hey hello. You are doing a great job. Thanks. Can ypu soon talk about the SOG-TAC CA. ??
I could honestly go for a 2 inch blade and a full sized handle. I’d really love it anyone have any suggestions for folders?
Hi DCA, what would you consider as your grail bushcrafting knife?
This topic is worth another round.
SOG also has the tac auto with the full handle a 2" blade
The Protech Half Breed get the full Newport handle with the Sprint 2” blade
Thanks DCA. My little big knife is an original Techno. I prefer it over the Techno two. 👍🏻
Spyderco lil native with compression lock for little big knife!
What knife should Santa carry on his sleigh? I figure he encounters many situations where a good EDC blade would come in handy. Asking for a very jolly friend.
Suggest ProTech Half Breed. 2" S30v blade, full size handles. Great knife
Yo, David! So I have a bit of a predicament. I need machete that I can conceal, but fixed blades are illegal to conceal where I live. Are there ANY folders that are suitable substitutes for a machete? Thanks!
Hey DCA and Team! Going off of the last FAQ video, what are some small overbuilt or heavy duty, 3in or smaller blades? I usually always carry a 3.5 inch blade. Lately I'v been interested in a shorter length blade that won't seem so menacing in something like an office setting, but will still hold up to harder use in the field. Preferably titanium or g10 and sub $250. Thanks for the recommendations and great content.

Hey DCA thanks for pointing out what a bargain the Kershaw Link is. I bought one and like it. Now, my question - how does one sharpen a super steel like that? Do I just use the coarse brown rods in my Sharp Marker? Do I need diamond? What say you?
The standard Sharpmaker rods should do fine on those steels. -DCA
best last question and answer so far
Hi Sir,
Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
I am considering getting a knife blade laser engraved for my new Grandson
My questions are:
Can laser engraving affect the heat treatment of a blade?
Are some steels better than others to avoid this?
Thanks
Take care
Graham
Hey DCA and Thomas! What's about the reverse side of the question "If your only knife would be under 2 inches".. What if your only knife would be at least 4.5 inches?
Thanks for your videos and hello from mother Russia
Hi there, im interested in different type of materials used in knife scale, especially metals. Besides steel, titanium, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, or zirconium, (if damascus and timascus not counted) what else is available may i know pls. Thank you! Lee
Hi David- question for you: I love the MIcrotech Stitch, but they are very spendy and hard to come by. Is there a knife out there that is similar in shape and style that is somewhat affordable? Lmk thanks
Hi DCA, I am having a hard time the right knife for my new job because I am large blade kind of guy. It must be under 2.5, locking, have a pocket clip, and have good edge retention, sub 150 please. My current favorite carries are a Spyderco Military, PM2 and Benchmade Osborn. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi DCA! I'm looking for a well made knife with good finishes that can feel more premium in the hands. I would like something with a thumbstud, good action and simple minimal style. Can you suggest any?
Hey DCA what knife got you into collecting ? Like so many others the Lile First Blood Knife got me hooked just curious which one got you started .
The Boy Scout Whittler by Camillus my dad gave me when I was young :) -DCA
Hi Dave. I have had a Cold Steel Pendleton for over ten years. She is feeling her age. Looking to replace with different brand, newer steel. Looking for about same size blade n handle. Thanks.
I really want a lion steel m2 but I'm not a fan of the sheath. Can you recommend where to look for or get a kydex sheath made?
Can you help me find a fixed blade edc with K390 steel? I have an endela in k390 and its become my favorite folder to use and im confused as to why the steel isnt common in fixed blades yet
What level of grit should a sharpener have to make a hair split? Do you sell such a sharpener?
DCA , absolutely newby here but i can tell a
im goin down hard as a knife guy ( my wife will not be happy ). LOVE yr content, thank you 🙏. going to binge on yr channel to lesrn AMAP. and Ive created a Knifecenter account. 👍
Hey DCA, looking to upgrade my EDC and would value your opinion. Been carrying a CRKT Tuna for about a year, absolutely love it. Considering a Kershaw Dividend or a Tops Mini Scandi Flipper or perhaps a third option? Would value your input. Budget is 100 USD, would prefer that the knife be made outside China, and a flipper tab is critical. TIA
You should do a video on the new Andre De Villiers cleavers that came in, would love to see those on video.
Hey DCA, Weird question... I purchased a SOG Field Knife earlier this year and I noticed that the blade smells funny, like a chemical factory. Is that normal for 7Cr17MoV Stainless Steel?
DCA if you read this I will feel famous! I am looking for a small edc fixed blade. I prefer a brown leather sheath that can age and show character. The smith and sons axiom is real close but I don’t like the blade on that. Ideally wood scales. If possible maybe a more budget option under 100 and an option around 200. For the edc it is nice if the leather sheath rides higher or scout. No danglers. Currently I edc a esee 3 or izula 2, with a rotation of folders.
Hi DCA,
I am in the market for some groomsman folders. If I was to gift them with something that speaks to me, it would be a folding knife. I am looking for something gentlemanly that can be engraved with their names. Something that performs well but doesn't cost a fortune would be ideal. I appreciate any help on this matter,
Thanks!
Kershaw Leek. Congrats! -DCA
Respect for a good question
I’m looking for a good fixed blade for edc, I really want something with a finger ring and atleast have a 3 inch blade, preferably even a bit more length than that. I’ve been looking at the toor knives serpent but have heard bad things about the brand so im looking for alternatives to that knife, maybe even at a cheaper price. Thx!
Edit: No karambits, tanto blade is my preference but I’m open to different blade styles
First one: People typically use the first 2” of a blade. Me: I typically use the last two inches of the blade.
Thanks for the answer!
Well done on pronouncing my practical joke of a surname! I have another question for you: if all knives cost the same, what would be your choice for a do it all EDC?
Hey DCA, I recently purchased the SOG Aegis AT (exclusive just like in this video). I find it very difficult to open. It's to the point that I am using my other hand to open it, but being assisted open, it really pops open into my second hand. With that being said, when you showed the knife in this video, it seems to open smoothly. Did you do some type of modification or adjustment to get it to open so easily?
No sir, that knife was straight out of the box. If your knife is within our return window and is still unused, our customer service should be able to handle an exchange for you. -DCA
Can you please tell me what is the best OTF for the least money?
