I literally bought 10 of them Ozark trail 7.5's, D-2 is an underrated steel! it's up there with magnacut with edge retention and toughness! and is actually tougher than magnacut!! Ask me how I know I am a blade smith lol... in my study's I would say this cheap 10.00 knife up against the bugout will win in my eyes! If the heat treating is proper the D-2 will beat out the S35VN!!

    • @chrisjosekuehl
      @chrisjosekuehl 2 місяці тому

@@Kodiak_Edgeyou are seriously misinformed, d2 has decent edge retention but it is brittle compared to other steels, magnacut when hrc at 62+ is tougher than Cruwear, has better edge retention than many other super steels it’s not like a k390 or maxamette, and its nearly stainless on the level of lc200n, or h1/h2, not the same but close. D2 has never been a tough steel, it’s one of the best edge retention’s of the very budget steels.

As long as these companies can maintain their QC, I
think this will be a great thing for this new generation getting into EDC. For the 18 year old kid working a minimum wage job, the glass counter at Walmart might be the only glimpse into this space that he sees. I always say my first ‘big boy’ knife was a Kershaw Blur that I got from a North Carolina Walmart.

My first knife was a Kershaw Hotwire (that I still own) from my local Walmart in Michigan where I live. Then I fell into the trap of owning several Kershaws and quite a few of the Ozark Trail knives you see all over knife lover pages and such including the orange Bugout clone.

My son gave me the Civivi Mini Praxis for fathers day last year. Been impressed with it. Bought a second one that stays in my tools box at work and is used constantly for cutting hoses, opening cardboard boxes (mechanic work in general).

    Couple things here:
    1) yes compare bugout
    2) i would like to try the haltbar, but for $15 less I would probly pick the one you dud after for $35.
    3) I own gerber, buck and kershaw I bought at walmart in the early 90's. Still use them today. I dont think I have ever sharpened my gerber w/guthook. Ive skinned a handful of deer believe it or not with the Leek.
    4) times are different for me today and I have been able to purchase more expensive knives, that I dont think are really any better than what I mentioned above. I do have a bugout that I bought with a gift cert from work. Its really sweet, but I wouldnt pay $171 for it, out of my pocket.
Keep up the great content. I really found value in two of the BPS knives, the Adventurer and a smaller skinner type.

Menards has stepped into the game as well. They have a house brand called Guidesman that sales some knives that don't suck for the price. I picked up the "Covert" a neck knife for $10 that was sharper out of the box then most knives I have purchased. I had very low hopes but have been pleasantly surprised. I find myself wearing it over a lot of my more expensive knives.

Oh and Cold steel went to a Walmart brand and I think SOG did the same thing, which I don't fault them a bit. I met L.Thompson at a L A gun show at the Pomona fair grounds , this is way back when he only had two boxes of knives, a push dagger and another small knife. I have a Schrade XTimer red aluminum liner lock knife.(need to put all that title in to get to the right knife) the blade profiles are virtually identical. I wouldn’t be surprised if the factory that made Schrade knives in china, before Schrade went under, is now making ozark knives from the Schrade surplus. I kinda want to take the paint off the Ozark now and see if the blade is later etched ‘XTimer’ on the blade.

I can stop at a Walmart and pick up a cheap edc if I’m staying for longer than a day. I’ve picked up a ozark trail a time or two and a quickly sharpener and I’m good for the rest of the time. I agree with you.
I just watched you head to head the Ozark vs the Bugout.
    10v180
And I think it was more than just ok.
I don't know if the Bugout, would outlast 3 of that orange Ozark.
Let alone the 18 you could get for the Bugout price.
Yeah, seems, from your test, as if it was more than 'just ok'.
    Wonder if you got lucky?
Like... With low cost often comes inconsistent results... And some might be durable while others might fall apart quickly...
With a larger chance of faulty parts.

I got the orange BM killer. I cut through a few heavy duty boxes with ease. Action is comparable for price. You need to put it up against the bugout.

I bought the swiss tech leicht from Walmart, not a bad little fixed blade. I use it everyday for ranch work, works great if you rotate the clip for an appendix carry scout carry

the EDC fixed blade from swiss tec looked cool if it will hold up I would buy it. I can always sharpen it a little more often if the steel is ok. i wouldn't mind seeing you check that out.

I got the Ozark in d2 an I got the haltbar the other day. So far I'm loving the haltbar it's pretty comfortable. It would be awesome to see a bugout battle an a video completely testing the haltbar in vg10

Bugout battle for sure. How about a fixed blade test or comparison. Something that is similar. I'm glad you did this. Didn't know Walmart upgraded their knife selection.

What’s your opinion on the Microtech UTX-85® for a left hand defensive edc to compliment a CCW ?

I’m right handed searching for a knife that I can deploy quickly in the event I’m in a weapon retention situation. So I’m wondering if I should get a fixed blade or just carry the UTX-85® which I already own but legally not permitted to carry in New York

      It's a good $10 knife in fact, it's a great $10 knife but don't think for a second that it's anything more than a $10 knife.

I used to lose pocket knives within a few months of getting them. I nervously bought my first benchmade knife and started living by one simple rule: never set it down while in the middle of performing a task with it. Ever. If it's not in my hand, it's in my pocket and vise versa. 5 years of edc and going strong. The thought of losing a pocket knife never even crosses my mind anymore. I own 5 benchmades now. I love every one of them. These in the video are kinda cute, though.

I don't travel as much as I used to compared to pre-covid era, but I would have loved to see that D2 knife at Walmart back then. Because I traveled so often, I learned to pack everything on my carry-on. Only problem with that was that I couldn't bring my knife with me. But buying an okay knife for $10 at my destination and getting rid of it on the way back would have been a game changer.

Can’t find the $10 Ozark Fake-Out anywhere because of the hype. I’m a Slipjoint guy at heart. (I’m over all the Exotic supersteel modern blades) I picked up a SwissTech Doppelt. I’m a huge Barlow pattern fan. I didn’t have a modern style Barlow. I absolutely love the Doppelt! The Titanium coating is over the blades, aluminum bolsters and liners! I love the marbled carbon fiber scales! I also love the fact they used marbles carbon fiber for the spacers. For $35 this is a Great value. I hope SwissTech keeps churning out great blades at these prices. At one time (haven’t checked in a while) REI used to carry SwissTech before Walmart.

My vote for best knife in your video would be the outdoor edge sx5. Those replaceable blades are a godsend in the field. I am constantly cutting 550, boxes, 100mph tape, sometimes even nylon webbing and the sx5 is cheap and versatile. It hasn't let me down.

By far hands down the civivi cubit is my pick. Bought one out of curiosity went an bought another a week later. Will absolutely get hair whittling sharp and holds the edge well. For the money can’t be beat in my opinion. And it’s actually 14c28n steel

Tip down carry is sometimes safer, I’ve had folders creak open in my pocket while cutting wood and I sliced my hand open on it while putting my ear pro away. Tip down is preferred for some.

  • @dchall8

Here are my criteria for folding knives.
    1. Tip up
    2. Deep carry pocket clip
    3. Back flip opener (arthritis in my thumbs prevents any thumb openers)
    4. Stiletto or stabby shaped blade.
    5. Price under $40, although $45 would be considered if it was really beautiful
    6. No frilly Damascus goop
Swiss Tech Gerundet looks good, but the blade could be pointier.
Swiss Tech Balken looks good if it ever goes on sale.
    Civivi Mini Praxis looks good.
Civivi Praxis looks good, if I want to splurge
Civivi Elementum is good if it goes on sale.

The gerber ultimate survival is a good knife from Wal-Mart and i like it a lot but the blade quality isnt superior. Ive broke one in half batoning thru kindling, i broke the tip off another one but cant remember how, and chipped the serrated part on another. fiasked them if they sold replacement firestarters because mine was wearing down and they sent me a whole new knife with sheathe, sharpener, and ferro rod
