    I agree - if it is a working tractor, fresh paint protects the surfaces, slows the rust, etc. , but more importantly, in my opinion, is that I felt better looking at and running my tractor - looked fine from 100 ft away! (I did the same thing on my old 9N many years ago) You can always strip down to metal and redo it all the "right way" later if you want (like you said). Thanks, Good ideas!

    Some paint poorly applied is better than no paint leading to rusty deterioration. Too many are worried about showroom quality and never actually paint their tractors. The other option if you have paint on the tractor that just looks faded is wipe on a thin coat of Boiled Linseed Oil cut with 1/3 Mineral Spirits. That will bring back the depth of color and shine without a full on repainting project. Might need to do that every year but it's fast and easy. If you put it on too thick or too many coats at once it will be touch-tacky for a long while.

    It looks good from where I'm sitting. I have a ford 8n that I brush painted the cast black and the tin i prayed dark hunter green. I barely scraped it off before painting it. The argument I made was "its better than rust and it'll look good from 30 feet away." If it is a tractor that does work, it doesn't need to be a showpiece.

    You are a 100% right, if you wait till you have a couple weeks to be picky about doing a great job on it chances are that it won't get done at all!!

    I guess a restoration job would cost more than the value of the tractor itself if you want a car like paint. If you see a military ship, they look exactly like the paint on your tractor, with traces of the old paint underneath. It's for protection, not for looking "like new."

    How about cleanup? When I got my 460, it was covered in the last 60 years of dirt/oil/grime/grease. I’ve been slowly trying to clean it all up by hand, but it just never seems to end, and there is a bunch hidden behind the frame rails, etc. any easy tips for prep?

      I paint alot of nasty tractors! No need to scrape. Coat all the caked up grease and dirt with cheap oven cleaner and let it set for 20 minutes. Spray the whole tractor down with a power washer. Caked areas will just blow away. If you have an Auto Zone get their Purple power degreaser and spray the whole tractor with it, let it set for 20 minutes and go over it again with the power washer. It will remove everything including the oxidation.

      I used Purple Power and a pressure washer. I actually washed it 3 times before painting. I crawled all over underneath and used an air gun. I still ran into a few pockets of dirt.

      A couple of spray cans of 'degreaser' or equivalent and a power washer will do a lot. Power wash after a soaker two day rainstorm, then the degreaser after everything dries out and power wash what remains.

    Really like like your choice... after an hour of ploughing you do not see the faults

      Yes. I happened to come across some photos from when we first bought it years ago and I had forgot just how rough it was. But at the time I never really thought about it. As long as it does the job. The paint though made me feel a lot better about the money I had been putting in it. I've got an M&W turbo setup I haven't put on yet. That's on the block for this year sometime.

    Previous owner of my tractor painted all the hoses and now they are dried out and falling apart, the hoses he didn’t paint are still fine

      Looks plenty Good to me- What model & hp is that International? I'm looking for an old International for my 25acre small farm - little hay bush hogging misc. Chores I have an old Ford get by with but always wanted / like International -Is there any other model you'd rather have? I was looking at an old gas model w/ down pressure on 3pt but rather have little newer & diesel - Thanks for video!

      Amazing how a person doesn't see these till so much later. My apologies. This is a 560, roughly 60hp (a little over). I'm sure you've found something by now, but the 560 is a good tractor. As far as a model I'd rather have? Oh a lot. A 3388 was always my dream, but really too big for what I do. 1206, while still a little big, would be very usable. 884 is a great model. One of the English models. 3pt and you can get it with a cab and 4x4. If I was on a budget, you might see if you can find a 656 utility with a diesel. There are things I don't like about utilities, but the low slung stance is great for everything but cutting hay, though it will still do it easily. Did you end up getting something? I'd love to hear about it.

    Hows the paint now?

    • @oldplace2844
      @oldplace2844  Рік тому

      Doing well. It's worn where I step up and where the hitch moves. But it still looks pretty good. Keeping in mind, I keep it shedded for the most part. Definitely worth the time considering the minor cost. I think if I had spent a lot more on paint, I might be less likely to take it out in the field, so it's been a good compromise in my humble opinion.

    How’s this paint hold up?
    Any fading?

    • @oldplace2844
      @oldplace2844  4 роки тому +4

      Very little fading. It is tougher than i thought it would be considering i didn't add hardener. I painted it last October and will do a video showcasing it. I have not taken it easy on the tractor. While it sits in the shed when not in use, It's been in heavy brush/small trees a lot this year, clearing fields for other people. While it's certainly not imron, I've been happy with it and the bright red mellowed out to a more natural looking 2150 red.
      Happy enough I'm going to use it again for my wife's 240.
