Fixing a Stuck or Broken Valve Adjuster! 1956 International S160.
Working on the 1956 International S160. This will work on a large number of mechanical valve adjusters. To be honest, this is the first time I've ever ran into this, so probably uncommon. Some of the information is specific to the International engines, such as the Black Diamond, Silver Diamond and Green Diamond engines as well as those found in most Farmall and International Tractors, at least into the 60s.
For international specifically, the threads are 3/8-24. The International part number for the valve adjuster is 16067DA.
If you have your own way, make sure to throw it down in the comments!

Can an old tractor pull a no till drill? Farmall 560 pulling 1006NT no till drill (Great Plains)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
Naturally you have to know your own equipment and your own land. This video is for those who are wondering if their old equipment can pull a no till. I believe most of the HP requirements are looking at the weight of a tractor. The drill is heavy, particularly once loaded, but the horsepower needs is actually quite small. I would suspect a properly equipped M could even pull this from a power s...
Farmall 560 (and 460) Regulator Control Valve Orifice Screen Check (Hot Hydraulics)
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
Here I check the orifice screen on the regulator control valve. My hydraulics have been getting hot and this is one of the things to check. While I didn't notice it in the video, there was a considerable amount of crud that came out. It did run cooler after this but would still get hot after a few hours. Better. Next I rebuild the control valves themselves. The bolts are 5/16" and I got them in...

Farmall 560 refresh complete..ish.

Got the 560 done more or less. Needs wiring and lots of little touches. Unfortunately I needed to bush hog, which I knew would scrape off paint. So this is likely as nice as it will look. But I chose cheaper paint so touching up won't be too costly. The rear tires are 18.4-38 and the fronts are 10.00-16.

How thick is the metal extension plate?
Thank you. I'm about to tear into my 460 PTO unit
@@AndrewMontag May it go well!
Could you use the porter power for pressing out/in sealed wheel bearings?
What color/ brand white did you use? Looks really good
Instead of an assortment of bolts, try just the longest bolts needed, with a nut as a stop. Thread the bolts in, move the nuts to the plate, remove the other bolts, and back out the nuts. No need to keep swapping bolts.
Tie off that electric line that you're fighting the while video
Do you still have the pto shaft
The PTO unit? Yes, I have that.
When dealing with industrial electric hydraulic units if the pressure relief is stuck or bound up the oil will heat up but the motor will actually heat up and trip out. On a tractor theres enough power to just keep pumping and really heat up the oil at least until the pump gives up. For whatever reason the hydraulic oil isnt being allowed to "return to tank" unrestricted. I'm sure I will be dealing with this at some point on my 560. Thanks.
Get a ratchet and you won't have to talk so much.
Mine is super loud whine and I changed filter and fluid. ?
Usually means it's cavitating or sucking air. If it's getting hot there are several things to check, including the check valves.
Do you have a link to the alternator
I'd like to have seen a series on this!
The 560 I'm looking at the inside remote doesn't seem to do anything I wonder if that could be an easy fix
I'm looking at buying a 560 Farmall how did you notice it was getting hot what was making the noise when using hydraulic or just going down the road
It took an hour of use to notice it getting extra hot.
It looks good from where I'm sitting. I have a ford 8n that I brush painted the cast black and the tin i prayed dark hunter green. I barely scraped it off before painting it. The argument I made was "its better than rust and it'll look good from 30 feet away." If it is a tractor that does work, it doesn't need to be a showpiece.
Very helpful where is part 2?
well now I know if I ever have that problem
I guess a restoration job would cost more than the value of the tractor itself if you want a car like paint. If you see a military ship, they look exactly like the paint on your tractor, with traces of the old paint underneath. It's for protection, not for looking "like new."
Hows the paint now?
Doing well. It's worn where I step up and where the hitch moves. But it still looks pretty good. Keeping in mind, I keep it shedded for the most part. Definitely worth the time considering the minor cost. I think if I had spent a lot more on paint, I might be less likely to take it out in the field, so it's been a good compromise in my humble opinion.
@@oldplace2844 Ok might be something i do in future. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I went to change the filter on my 656, but the filter I got (and the old one that was in there) was thinner than it seemed like should be in there. The cover isn’t a flat plate, and they had the old one rigged to hold it in place. I will certainly try that thicker filter.
What’s the size of the front wheels and tires?
10.00-16 on the front. Helps it ride a LOT smoother and cuts sod less when turning.
Helpful vid
Trying to put a factory hand clutch on a 560 and can’t find and pictures, do you have any ideas how it attached. I have most of the factory hand clutch but not all.
Sorry, just getting back to this now. Have you looked at any of the 660 service manuals? I have one, I'll check it out later, but it seems that more 660s had hand clutches than 560. I assumed they were add ons, but very well could have been stock. I'll get back to you later and let you know what the service manual says.
You are a 100% right, if you wait till you have a couple weeks to be picky about doing a great job on it chances are that it won't get done at all!!
On our 560, the cylinder above the pto won’t move. We replaced the the hydraulic fluid. Now the hitch basically wants to stay on the ground. We resorted to wrapping a log chain around the axil. Do you think our pump is shot or will doing this fix the issue?
It sounds like not enough fluid. The trans holds 25 or 30 gallons. Have to have 15 or 20 in it to even reach the filter housing that feeds the hydraulic pump
Do your remotes work? I'd try that first. If the remotes work, then your pump is fine. If your remotes do not work, replace your filter first and check your screen. After that, examine the check valve under your seat/in the tool box-seat base. If all that checks out, then probably the pump.
The power steering works. Still haven’t found issue… ive been trying to get the screen out in this video and it won’t budge.
If your interested I have a nos right front fender.
Whoa, nice! Not many NOS fender floating around. Is it a medium duty fender or for the light duty trucks? I may be able to get that dent out of this fender. I am looking for headlight rings and a good bumper, though I may end up making my own heavy bumper for the front if I can find a pto winch.
I don't know if light duty, but it has the flares and lips like yours, I have s120 4x4 and bought extra trucks with lots of doors and stuff and this nos fender was with all the parts.the head lights rings I do have are beat up.but i do other parts.
Definitely not for 3/4 or 1/2 ton trucks.
Where are you getting parts for it, I have a 56 s160 and I can't find parts anywhere, mainly looking for brake parts and possibly rear end and transmission.
Brake shoes can be relined via various companies. One of them is in Fort Wayne. Brake lines (including soft lines), ignition components, oil filters and more can be ordered from NAPA. Transmissions can be tough. It helps if you can get the number of your transmission from your line set ticket if possible. Many of these transmissions were made by 3rd party vendors, like Borg Warner and others. Mine has a T-21 5 speed (direct in 5th). Rear ends were often were international with their own part numbers. For medium duty I think it's easier to find parts than some of the light duty trucks, but you have to do a lot of digging through commercial truck catalogs. A lot of the brake boosters on Medium duties were made by Bendix. You can still get parts, but not cheap. oldinternationaltrucks.com/ The site I linked has quite a few parts.
@@oldplace2844 awesome thank you very much! I'll be working on the truck starting this week so I'll get a good idea on what stuff and can just clean up and what needs to be replaced.
I just got a farmall 460 an I’m getting ready to paint it…. How did you paint your rims….. BTW your 560 like awesome
When I first painted it, with the 15.5-38s still on, I taped them off... or more accurately, my wife did. :D But when I switched to 18.4-38s the rims were already off. Much like the rest of the tractor I did 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of Rustoleum industrial aluminum paint. It's held up very well, considering this is our most used tractor. We plow, disc, bush hog and do hay. It is kept in a shed when not in use, so it is spared a lot of wear from the elements, but overall I've been very happy with the Rustoleum paint.
Really like like your choice... after an hour of ploughing you do not see the faults
Yes. I happened to come across some photos from when we first bought it years ago and I had forgot just how rough it was. But at the time I never really thought about it. As long as it does the job. The paint though made me feel a lot better about the money I had been putting in it. I've got an M&W turbo setup I haven't put on yet. That's on the block for this year sometime.
Some paint poorly applied is better than no paint leading to rusty deterioration. Too many are worried about showroom quality and never actually paint their tractors. The other option if you have paint on the tractor that just looks faded is wipe on a thin coat of Boiled Linseed Oil cut with 1/3 Mineral Spirits. That will bring back the depth of color and shine without a full on repainting project. Might need to do that every year but it's fast and easy. If you put it on too thick or too many coats at once it will be touch-tacky for a long while.
That ol 560 would pull the house off its foundation if you wanted it too.
Howdy I have a 560 also gas i have rear remotes hooked up like yours how do you turn them on
On mine, the middle lever to the right of the steering wheel runs the rear hydraulics. Sorry I just saw this. I'm sure you've got it figured out by now. One other note is in front of the gear shift there is a cover with a couple of knobs. Those switch from single to dual action cylinders.
That's my old truck I rescued it. I would love to see how it's coming along and also share some pictures of how and where I found it with you. My son and I did a lot of work on that truck.
Nice! I have a few questions on it too. It looked like it had something mounted to the roof. Was it a fire truck at one point? Any photos/videos I'd love to see and would be happy to share. It's sat in the barn for a while, just taking it out for local joy rides, but now finally getting down to putting real work into it.

@Old Place I dont see any contact information in the about on your channel?
@Old Place I have around 70 pictures from when I bought. It actually was a grain truck originally it had a dump bed. But the bed was removed before I bought it.

How about cleanup? When I got my 460, it was covered in the last 60 years of dirt/oil/grime/grease. I’ve been slowly trying to clean it all up by hand, but it just never seems to end, and there is a bunch hidden behind the frame rails, etc. any easy tips for prep?
I paint alot of nasty tractors! No need to scrape. Coat all the caked up grease and dirt with cheap oven cleaner and let it set for 20 minutes. Spray the whole tractor down with a power washer. Caked areas will just blow away. If you have an Auto Zone get their Purple power degreaser and spray the whole tractor with it, let it set for 20 minutes and go over it again with the power washer. It will remove everything including the oxidation.
I used Purple Power and a pressure washer. I actually washed it 3 times before painting. I crawled all over underneath and used an air gun. I still ran into a few pockets of dirt.
A couple of spray cans of 'degreaser' or equivalent and a power washer will do a lot. Power wash after a soaker two day rainstorm, then the degreaser after everything dries out and power wash what remains.
Way cool! Keep up the 560 videos!
Hello will farmall 560 Hyd. valves work on a farmall 460???
I'm sure you've already found your answer (sorry for the delayed reply), but it appears from the parts list that the control valves have the same part number. So it looks like the answer is yes, at least according to my parts book.
Did you have to drain entire system to change the filter?
Not the whole system. I actually only lost about 2 gallons. Though I did it at the same time I changed the filter. I change it once every couple years.
It's a work tractor it will help save it in the long run .
That's a really good looking 560 I'm kind of a judge on 560s I take off points for gas engine and non IH wide front ends
I do the same thing I'm not into show I have work machines I'd cry if I scratched a show tractor good job
i had 460 yrs ago with bid axles pump weak put in oump out of backhoe gave it real flow would raise 3/16 fast
I've see the high flow pumps on the parts list. If I'm going to replace it anyhow, might be worth while to buy the high flow.
check main hyd pressure if not high enough pump could be worn out also check power steering side
I suspect a new pump is in my future. Probably do both at the same time.
It still looks really good.
is this a dually or 4x4 by chance?
This one is a dually. Do you have a 4x4? I've seen a couple of them, but certainly uncommon... if any of the 56 internationals can be called common.
@@oldplace2844 No, I went and looked at one last week. Some guy bought it before I could. It was the only one I've seen on the west coast that was a 4x4 dually S160. I'm on the hunt for another one. It will probably be a couple years before I find another one.
@@josephkryszczak I maybe letting mine go after I get it on the road….it’s a s120 4x4 travel all….but 1st I want to have some fun with it….
@@offgridmangogrower sounds like a nice truck
@@offgridmangogrower almost a year later so you want to sell it?
Whether it can pull it (or not) is down to weight and traction to meet the required draught (F). The draught(F) required will be affected by soil conditions. How FAST it can pull it is down to horsepower, assuming the gear ratio required is available. P=Fv, so v = P/F (for many years the largest tractor on my father's UK farm of 130 acres was a Massey Ferguson 165, eventually upgraded to a 4Wd Ford 6710)
I think it looks great
Thanks! I'll do an update here soon to show how the paint has held up. I'm pleased with the durability. Going to do the wife's 240 this summer I think.
It’s beautiful
TA stands for Torque Amplifier. Please don't call it 'torque assist' (1:03). Tel-A-Depth is the name of the position control for the Fast Hitch, using the lever with the adjustable stop so that you can easily return to the same lowered position each time, and the button on top to bypass the stop position. That is the far right of the three levers on the right side of the dash. The large handle lever left of the seat (which you called tel a depth) is called the traction control lever in IH marketing materials. It is like an early form of draft control but is all mechanical in changing the angle of the Fast Hitch as pull increases, it does not operate the hydraulics at all as draft control would.
Clear coat it and keep that patina..! I love those 20 inch wheels....I'm keeping my budds and throwing discs behind them...I took my PTO off and the drive line...what crazy weight...!
I wish there was a way to keep the cast centers and upgrade to discs, but the drums will still put you through the windshield unless you have a lot of weight behind it.
@@oldplace2844 check on the military dodge forums…they have a drum to disc conversion…since most are repowering with heavier diesels
I think you are missing your screen bypass that goes in the big hole on your hydraulic filter.
Yeah, it was sitting on the tarp but forgot to point it out in the video. It did go back in, but if someone doesn't have one, they definitely want to get one on it. Nice catch! :)
@@oldplace2844 dumb question here, but the filter I took out of my 460 today didnt have the bypass, the whole side was just solid. Filter I picked up from the parts store has the big hole in the side for the screen, but I don't have one. Can't even find one online anywhere. How huge of an issue is it to run it without the strainer in it?
