Underrated fisherman mindset is absolutely considering the tastes of fish.
Always focusing on presentation and bait quality.

Hi Roger, even though I'm in the uk, I love watching your channel and applying some of your tips on our uk beaches. Although due to commercial over fishing we no longer have the quantity of fish that you do, I have managed to get some quality bass and bream following your advice. As a general rule, most of our quality fish are caught at 150yds or more using powerful casting rods, so it is an absolute pleasure catching decent fish close in on light tackle. Keep up the good work. 👍

Thanks Roger. I was wondering if you ever tried preparing your squid a few days ahead. I have cut my squid in bait strips and placed it into a water tight/ spit tight container and adding food coloring of yellow/ green to make a chatruse color and and salt water solution. It seems fish go crazy for the colored bait from my experience. Of course plain color prepared that way works to. I’ve always targeted bottom dwellers like flounder, sea trout and aggressive species like bluefish (mulloway). The smaller blues you catch in the surf, we call snapper blues. The big ones, over 2/ foot we call slammers.
But a prepped bait like squid with blue crab is a killer. Fishing on your Australian beaches is on my bucket list I hope to do one day.

That is an interesting idea, colouring the bait.
The fish he got, we call a Kahawai, and they are very happy to smash very white things. You can catch them with just a piece of white cloth, drawn at a slow pace like a lure.

    • @edherrmann182
      @edherrmann182 5 місяців тому +1

@@uncletiggermclaren7592 that is a great lure choice. It must represent local bait fish. I am sure different fish species have their favorite targets. I think the colored bait might work as an attractor. I have always had great results with chartreuse colored baits and lures.

@@edherrmann182 When you were a kid, did you ever fish with a float and dough?. We have a fish called Piper here, that are hardly worth the trouble to take because they are not very big. But super cool to look at, exactly like a Marlin, except their beak is on the bottom.
But all around the ( British Empire part of the ) world in the early 20th century for that very reason, fishing for Piper was a big thing, and a bit of a high art.
They used blow-fly maggots on tiny hooks. Everything about the piper fishing was time consuming, they mostly grew their own maggots, and cleaned them too.
Why I was telling you that is, you would frequently be fishing for piper with your two pound leaders and tiny wire hooks, and a one foot long Kahawai would spot the tiny white maggot and say "Oh, that is LOVELY, I WILL, thank you".

    • @edherrmann182

@@uncletiggermclaren7592 I never used bread for saltwater fish. I did however use bread and dough for carp and sometimes sunfish when I was a kid. I live about 3- hours from ocean saltwater, so most of my fishing is confined to freshwater. I am an avid fly fisherman and I tie my own flies. I have made little maggot like grubs out of latex from hospital gloves.. we have a fish somewhat similar to your piper fish called a gar. However they have very heavy scale coverings and some species can get to7- feet long and weigh several hundred kilos. They are a popular fish in the southern states. The flesh is kind of funky. They make a dish called gar balls. They are deep fried, breaded and heavily seasoned.
      But I’ll pass on them.
The similarity when fish are young is they have a long beak and they are long and slender. It is a freshwater fish.
As far as maggots go, I just need to find a road killed animal that carcass has been swarmed by flys and 7-10 days later a source of maggots becomes available. (If I can get past the stink!)
      Cheers

fresh strip bait (tailor, squid, bream, etc.) with 30lb leader and a heavy surf combo is my rig, been going alright with that so far. you can also throw ganged pillies if you dont have fresh bait but not as good for jewies, you'll probably catch tailor which you can use as bait!
