The length of line coming off the main line can tangle around the main line( It needs to be a lot shorter ), so fish will bite at the bait and not hook them self on it using circle hooks. Once i attached circle hooks to very short dropper loops i started to catch way more fish as the hooks don't wrap around the mainline.
Ya I’ve never seen a bunch of lines hanging off and I live in Jax beach Florida kind of a fishing mecha being near Mayport Florida. Everyone just goes pyramid weight, hook on loop, hook on loop all on the main fluoro or mono leader then that’s just attached to a swivel barrel that’s attached to the main braid. That’s it. Simple and works for everyone. Can build 10 in 30 minutes and be set for the week no matter if whole thing breaks, we just have back up leaders ready but usually don’t break cause 30lb mono on 30lb and up braid
@@jacobmcvay123 It's very common to see these rigs in Australia(not that long as shown in the video), mainly people use some form of paternoster rig. With 20lb line I've pulled up 5+kg banjo sharks with it, so these paternoster rig are pretty strong for how simple they are to tie.
Showing what the rig looks like before you start is BRILLIANT! I know where I am heading. So many people show you tying knots and cutting tags and most fisherman can do that, but we never see the final rig in entirety. Knowing what the rig looks like from the start is fantastic!
I've been building my own beach rigs for years and this is an excellent instructional video. Newbies, USE THIS!!! The rigs you buy at the store will cause you to NOT catch fish. They are too bulky, have too much metal and beads ... they scare fish away. If you are new to making your own rigs and tying knots, instead of tying an FG knot to your line, use the smallest swivel you can get away with. My personal preference is a 20 or 30lb SPRO swivel. However, If you have a little experience with knots, the FG Knot is the way to go.
I would tie the rig itself to a swivel just for ease of use when tying on to the main line. Just makes it easier tying on and taking off without eventually running your rig down to the hooks itself.
I'm lazier, all my mainlines go to snap swivels. The same double granny (Aussie) or overhand (American) for the sinker, attaches to the snap swivel too ... This means I have plenty of ready made rigs for every occasion ..
You guys are the best! I was a decent fisherman before but you have increased my knowledge ten fold and I’m catching even more fish because of it. Thanks
Having tied my own fluro leaders when fly fishing for bass, I was looking for this solution for the surf. So much better than buying rigs. Thanks! I've liked and subscribed.
Hi Luke! I really appreciated this video, but for a slightly different reason. This "modular" system allows me to rig my surf reels with the "core" line, and attach all of the offshoots, loop to loop right at the beach! They are so much more compact than 3 feet of rigging to unwind and untangle! 2 of my rods are 12 feet and there's no way I can go to the beach fully pre rigged. Thanks Buddy!
I hope you don't mind me pointing this out but the circle hooks work way better if you put a loop in from the front of the hook. The hook will sit at a weird looking angle but you will hardly lose a bait without catching a fish. Or snelling it through the front of the hook.
Great video. I watched this just after buying a pre-rigged setup. I did learn the right way to pull the leader out of the container! I kept pulling the top off which I think is a real pain. Now I know I just pull it though the gap!
Here in Naples, FL our fishing club has been using Fishbites for a few years. Many reasons including that in the summer our live shrimp are very small and hard to use. Many of us use Fishbites as a tipping on our jigs. Fishbites fished alone can be effective if the current is not too strong. Many of our larger fish are caught using this product. Lloyd Doerflinger
Very handy tutorial sir. 😃🤙🏼 The lighter line “off shoot” to the hook and weights also minimizes the amount of stray line lost in the water. That is awesome, thanks.
I recommend you filming the towing of everything from behind. So we can see and follow it easier. It’s like reading something in a mirror. It’s backwards. That would help a lot. Thank you for the great video. I did get most of it right lol
This is almost exactly what I use for redfish rig out on the jetty. I call it the skeleton rig. I use fg knot to a 10-20ft 50lb core, with 30lb extension and surgeons knot for all the loops. The long core helps against abrasion on the rocks.
@saltstrong: Great video. Will definitely watch several times and use this rig for my next trip. My question: You're using 20 and 30 leader lines. What line strength do you use for the main line? If the leader gets snagged and the main line is say, 15 lbs, then it will break before any of the leaders do and I will lose everything. Comments? Thanks.
I tried this setup with slightly higher pounds in Albany Western Australia months ago. It worked flawlessly! I got a bad snag on the reef because it was dark and I couldn't see a whole lot. I only lost my star sinker. and within 5 minutes I was back up and running. When I felt like trying different hooks it was as simple as taking it off and I had pre made a bunch of hooks with the loop on them. Too easy
This rig needs a name... I can see the thought and experience you've put into it, and thank you for sharing it. I have a friend who described his similar setup and referred to it as a "drop shot" rig, and "Modified Dropper" just doesn't seem to do justice. Maybe "Bottom Dropper Plan B"? Because you've set it up to come out OK even if unexpected things happen to it.
I'm guess you would want to make a few of these at a time while you are doing it since you already have all the stuff out and in front of you. What is a good way to keep of these in your tackle box as spare rigs to keep them from getting tangled?
Thank you very much. Your explanations are very clear and cameraman does a great job on getting the details, much appreciated makes me feel more confident hate losing my legs too. Not gonna buy another one🎉
Hey guys... Im from Singapore. Loves fishing very much. Loved ur videos. Presentation was very awesome clear. Hope to see more of your videos guys.....
I have been using this rig exclusively with lots of success, recently, i kept getting smoked by sharks and spent more time rigging and less time in the water. I would like to make the offshoots wire leader, is this possible? what would you recommend.
Since I like your channel, I will reveal another "secret" about this rig. When you make a dropper loop, make the loop itself with twisted line - - it will stick away and prevent the hook leader from twisting around the core line. Also make the length of the hook leader shorter or the distance between the two loops longer so that under any circumstances they do not cling to each other.
Thanks for your question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here: bit.ly/2yHjeGb
Awesome presentation! This is going to be my goto rig.I figure I can tie several cores and quickly change out tackle. No more buying rigs for me. Many thanks brother
Try a piece of drinking straw between the hook and the knot on the main line. Keeps it from tangeling up. Check out Hey Skipper channel, shows how to do that.
Love the video but would of love to see them break off when u put the breaking point to see where the break offs happen but watched the video tested it and it came out perfect snapped where it should thanks for the info past fisherman have given me bad rig ideas never worked and this set up I’ve caught decent fish off the Nantucket point shore.
How would you tie all of that to the main line? Would you tie it before you put all of the hooks on or make all of those off chutes then tie it to the main line hooks and all? Either way can you let me know what knot you would use to join them? Fluro to mono I'm guessing

I've seen some blogs that say to use a leader that is as long as the pole plus 2 or 3 wraps around the reel that is 10 pounds for every ounce thrown. So if I were throwing 4 oz weights use 40 lb braid. Since 80 lb braid is the same size as 30lb mono, that is the recommended size. What are your thoughts on using the 80lb braid as the main line and the 30 mono as each line off?
Question: Can I use a loop at the end of my leader in order to change out jigs quickly and easily? I don’t want to cut the line and re-tie every time I want to change the jig and bait. The leader will get shorter and shorter doing this. Then I will have to replace it.

Depends on the surf conditions. Lighter weight 1-2 oz lite surf or 3-6 heavy surf. Sputnik weights are good allowing you to use a lighter weight as they will not drift very much. Expensive though. If you’re using one rod in an open area of beach, drift mat not be much of a problem. I use several rods at once so drift can cause tangled lines. Good luck

Headed to Gulf Shores in a week. Most of my knots have been overhand loops and faith.

Yes, you absolutely can. A very good fisherman named John Skinner does that. Look him up on UA-cam.

Why do you use the Orvis and not a snell for the hook?
why you would prefer end sinker instead of slider sinker?
For surf fishing, I use pyramid sinkers most of the time... I just showed an egg sinker at the end to show that you can easily switch sinkers with this surf fishing rig.
How durable is this rig? Would you tie a fresh rig daily? I’ve gotten two days out of mine and it looks OK.
In the uk we call it a flapper rig either tied two up or one up and one down
This is amazing! Thanks!!!!

Didn’t you go to the weight with 30# lone?
What size weight do you typically recommend for beach fishing?
Depends on the surf conditions. Lighter weight 1-2 oz lite surf or 3-6 heavy surf. Sputnik weights are good allowing you to use a lighter weight as they will not drift very much. Expensive though. If you’re using one rod in an open area of beach, drift mat not be much of a problem. I use several rods at once so drift can cause tangled lines. Good luck
