Wow! An actual TEACHER on UA-cam? Amazing! So tired of these "Look at me!" speed paint videos disguised as tutorials and how to's. It's nice to see someone who knows what they are doing actually teaching people how to paint.

After dozens & dozend of painting to these vids with horrible results. I decided, just today, to box-up ALL my paints/supplies because I felt so artistically defeated and empty of any talent. Now that I've seen this video I'm pulling everything back and will begin anew watching closely these exceptional lessons. Thank you!!!
In 1969 I began studying at Massachusetts College of Art. I thought we would get this kind of instruction on materials and tools, but was bitterly disappointed. Instead, the college force-fed their students a diet of abstract expressionism. Thank you for this wonderful training.
William, I got the same diet from UGA back in the mid-60's. It did give me understanding of what the abstract expressionists were doing, but I had to go elsewhere to get the technical information I needed.

Not so much the pros & cons, but rather capabilities and limitation then using that info to our advantage to create the desired effects. I tell my students use common sense, follow safety precautions and explore. Experiment and learn what your tools can do for you in this adventure of art.

Thanks, Julie. So many of the techniques used in oils can also be used with acrylics and gouache, but the composing principles are universal to all media.
Your a good teacher. Sometimes when painting grasses, I flip my canvas upside down and do the grass w/fan brush. I struggled with pushing the fan brush upwards with the correct pressure, and was not getting the thinning effect of the grass blades.
If you have a hot bristle fan brush with loose tips, you can hold it perpendicular to the canvas with very little presser and give it a quick long stroke. Load the brush from its tip with not very much paint or push it through wet paint.
