    The reason the survivors are surprised to see infected at the start of the campaign, is because the infection only reached Savannah literal minutes before Dead Center takes place. Prior to their rush to the rooftop, they were probably down in the lobby waiting to get processed for evacuation, like hundreds of other refugees, in a regular safezone free of infected, when the infected suddenly caused the crowds to panic and the survivors to make a run for the rooftop. They probably first grouped up a floor or two before the rooftop, with Nick calling Coach, well... "Coach" due to his outfit, rather than actually knowing his name. I've seen some people headcanon that Coach decided to pick it up as his nickname because of Nick calling him that.
    In other words, the infection quite literally just hit the hotel, with the panic of the other refugees prompting the survivors to run to the rooftop before they could see the source of panic. The infected we see were likely still human moments prior, and the fire and destruction literally _just_ happend.
    This is a fairly common theme in the game, with Dark Carnival and The Parish having been very recently overrun as well. It's also why the helicopter is flying to the mall in the beginning - The mall was still safe at the start of the campaign, and is overrun shortly after the survivors leave the hotel, sometime throughout the 2nd map.
    There's actually some interesting theories to be had about how exactly the infected first showed up in the minutes before Dead Center:
    The simplest explanation is that the frontline of the infected had pushed through military defences, and naturally progressed to the hotel before anyone could warn CEDA.
    However, Ellis has a voiceline where he describes that he already had a previous encounter with the infected prior to Dead Center, so it's possible that he travelled down south to the hotel from an other area in Savannah that was being overrun, but still mostly controlled by the military. This would mean that he inadvertently infected people in the safe area of Savannah, which then caused the sudden outbreak in a way that caught CEDA by complete surprise.
    One small issue with this theory, though, is that CEDA should already have known about carriers, and had procedures in place to account for potential carriers, but given that Ellis is a Savannah local, and CEDA was under a lot of stress and pressure due to the infected hordes being barely held off, they might've made one small mistake and assumed him to be from a safe location within Savannah, skipping the usual carrier procedures, and letting the infection spread throughout the safezone.

    I still really like how Dead Center and No Mercy, thought might as well be L4D as a whole, is that they have a certain thing in common that i focus on very often:
    The very first chapter where we meet our survivors is where they strategize to look for a rescue in a cliche zombie apocalypse checkpoint known to be overly populated in this type of crisis. Hospitals have lots of people in waiting rooms and patients for some sort of infection crisis to quickly spread, and malls are usually one of the most populated places you could have in a city, not exactly your first go-to for an apocalypse like this.
    (Although Dark carnival happening too quickly does break this philosophy but eh, i'm a L4D addict, not much will make me care about the insanity of coming up with it, it's fun)

    The hotel was used as an evacuation center, so there were a lot of people there already.
    We all know that the crew are carriers, so they probably were unintentionally infecting everyone while running up to get to the helicopters. As they grieve at missing the helicopter, all hell is breaking loose below. Then when they finally venture down again, after only a couple of minutes mind you, they see that everything quickly went wrong. That’s my take on it.
    Also I don’t think the cinematic is all that cannon, because we see the screaming oak exploding. So I think it was just showing what the game and tone would be as opposed to L4D’s opening.

      personally i think its just that they met outside the hotel, maybe through a secondary less populated door, took mostly the stairs , while most infected were probably the sick in the rooms and halls, i mean the survivors were probably busting ass up the stairs and the fire could have made the infected not hear them, then when the whirlybird left some of the infected came up the stairs and the fire blocked off whatever quiet route they took up the hotel.
      also i think gameplay and what the story is has always been at a disconnect, like how in the comics, the special infected spawn more than one or two at a time and they kill you the moment they get to you, so its not far fetched that making sense was not their focus when trying to tell the story about how the survivors met.

      Carriers only become infectious after being exposed to the infected, though. The only person who mentions prior exposure to an infected is Ellis, so if anything, Ellis would've infected the refugees and caused the outbreak at the Hotel, which then proceeded to spread across the entire state.

    L4D1 is 2 weeks after the first infection, and No Mercy starts a few days after widespread outbreak. Infected were known, carriers were being discovered, and the military/CEDA was mobilizing when the northeast was hit like wildfire (likely because the NE USA is a tourism hotspot). Several of the campaigns are back to back full of desperation and chaos, with some covering less than a mile of travel. Blood Harvest, military base (likely in South Carolina as there are several training bases in the state), a train ride to Passing (likely along the Mississippi or one of its southern tributaries in northern Louisiana). Its unclear but we can assume the gang arrives at the bridge between 3 and 5 weeks after first infection, LIKELY its close to 4.
    In the South, the military and CEDA are much more active and prepared, likely due to the much easier to manage population centers seperated by long stretches of interstates and lack of general tourism. Outbreaks are contained and isolated, carriers are being identified and removed from camps.
    A few days before the outbreak in the NE, our survivors find their way to Savannah to be evacuated. Ellis and Keith build an apocalypse rig but are forced to leave it behind. They make their way through CEDA's makeshift camps in the Mall, Hotel and in between, likely slippi g through the carrier tests with a mix of chaos, luck and unproven testing, and as carriers slip through they share food and water, sleep in over crowded rooms and mingle. Just as the evacuation is in full swing the outbreak occurs, perhaps at the same time or a few days after the NE outbreak. Panic, chaos, people rushing the hotel. Our survivors manage to make it through. Keith and Ellis are seperated at this point, perhaps Keith made it back to their truck and made it out of town, which is why Ellis doesnt have the keys or ever tries to find it through Dead Center.
    Because we are in the middle of a sudden outbreak, this explains the burning hotel, lack of special infected, and concentrated hordes in our path as well as the hasty makeshift barricades between the CEDA checkpoints.
    What set off the explosive and sudden turning of thousands all at once? Many diseases are known to lie dormant until theyve infected a larger population, then spring forward as if coordinated. This happens with the regular flu every year, so why not the Green Flu?
    Regardless, this explains dead center. To explain the timeline, L4D2 is much more spread out. Carnival is assumed to be 2-3 days after Center but i believe it to be nearly a week, given the chaos, danger and given The Passing (assuming its between 3 and 4 weeks after first infection), our total timeline hints at either a delayed outbreak in the South, or at least a much more tame outbreak compared to the northeast with a solid extra week for CEDA and the military to operate (and operate with the knowledge of the NE outbreaks) hence the stark contrast between the two games.
    The main reason for a large gap between Center and Carnival is to give the characters time to grow and bond, which the first game clearly lacked and the comics sought to rectify inbetween Harvest and Sacrifice.
    All speculation of course, but this all ties it up nicely if our gang was on the road for about a week, which allowed the virus to flood population centers and develop a sizeable number of specials and hordes if Center is happening as an outbreak tears through Savannah

      @ImNotConz  4 місяці тому +3

      The Left 4 Dead 2 timeline is an idea I had for a video, it's so fun (and difficult) to break down.
      I'm currently working on the Swamp Fever video, which also has a ton of lore implications. Mainly Village En Marais, which was likely one of the last holdouts at least in the south. We can also confirm that the survivors left the plantation house 3 days before the survivors crashed into the swamp.
      The time in between Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever is also very hard to gauge. Assuming the turning process starts very shortly after coming into contact with a Carrier, they could have been flying for as long as 5-20 minutes. again its speculation but im willing to bet that Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever were less than a day apart, considering that they left the carnival at night and the sun rises at the end of swamp fever, its entirely possible that the events of Dark Carnival and Swamp Fever happen in the same 8-12 hour window.

    • @LoneWolf-kw3ol
      @LoneWolf-kw3ol 4 місяці тому +1

      @@ImNotConz i always personally believed the timeline and deep lore was intentionally messy and/or vague because Valve wanted to convey that these survivors have no desire let alone ability to keep track of time to the hour and study the infected in detail or read through notebooks and study charts at every camp they happen to come across, which also sells the chaotic desperation that much better.
      Wall grafitti also suggests the time of infection is seemingly random, as no one can agree on it. After being bitten, some said hours to over a day, others say minutes. As i said, many viruses work like a timebomb, waiting to show symptoms while they spread inside you and suppress the immune response. It could be that the average person takes a few hours once definitively exposed, changing based on concentration (4 carriers in an enclosed metal can potentially sharing food/drink with a single non carrier vs a handful among hundreds in the open air at a processing station).

    I always liked the idea that the L4D2 survivors literally just met in the climb up the stairs and its due to their nature as carriers that caused everyone in the hotel to turn in the time when they passed them and when they head back down. I also loved how L4D2 and Dead Center set up this theme of the survivors being right on the edge of the infection and always getting to the "safe zone" of the campaign right as its overrun, almost as if they're a part of the undead army.(which they kinda are, being carriers)
    EDIT: This has also made me realize something. So due to their nature as carriers, the L4D2 survivors kinda bring death and destruction with them wherever they go. You could see them, in a way, as the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The colors of the four horsemen are Black, Red, Pale, and White. Coach is black, Rochelle has a pink shirt on (pink is just red lightened by white), Ellis' shirt is a very Pale yellowish color, and Nick's suit is white.
    A bit of a stretch but interesting nonetheless.

    • @kyoskii3767
      @kyoskii3767 19 днів тому +1

      For the note of the 4 horsemen they have meanings; white is conquest, black is famine, red is war and pale is death.
      It makes a lil sense if they rep the choices you made; Nick is a gambler, he conquests the game, Coach is constantly talking about food but it's never really implied in the game he actually gets to eat, Rochelle is a news reporter who was doing reports on CEDA's war against the infected (also news just reports on wars a lot lol), and Ellis is shown in the trailer/intro with a whole lot of guns strapped to him as well as being the character who not only gets charged by a charger but also spat on by the Spitter, road by the jokey and caught by the smoker, which in game can lead to an death without teammates.
      It adds on my own personal head cannon that the L4D2 survivors are actually special infected themselves, just a highly intelligent one that subconsciously searches for populated areas to infect more people. Hence why despite knowing CEDA and the military are suspicious in the Parish they still go on with the plan to go to the military (where the most survivors probably are). It also explains how they can survive being thrown around by the special infected and to add on more, when they die they actually don't, the infection brings them back and that's why they 'respawn' in the closets. The reason why infected still attack them is that they've evolved too much to be recognised by the green flu victims and have essentially become their own virus.
      IDK I'm probably stretching this wayyyy too far but it's fun to think about.

    • @icyatlasartworks
      @icyatlasartworks 15 днів тому

      @@kyoskii3767 the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors being their own special breed of infected would be the craziest twist, and I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of here for it
      The witches having a semblance of intelligence (not much, but just enough to remember their previous lives) also shows that the Green Flu doesn't just turn zombies into mindless killing freaks 100% of the time, and it clearly likes to mutate, so it taking someone who is immune to the undead symptoms and giving them the boosted stats of a special infected anyway would be that extra little "screw you" to humanity, as it gives the flu's biggest chance of spreading (the carriers) the resilience and strength to make it across a nation of ravenous undead and an emboldened desire to be in a populated area.

    so funny thing i can somewhat answer about the 'how did they not see the zombies they pass up the stairs during the trailer for l4d2?' 1:27 question.
    you forgot one special line nick says when he sees a common infected for the first time on dead center.
    he says 'JESUS THERE ATTACKING NOW?' this is key to realizing what happened.
    the hotel was in mass panick. nick,ellis,coach, and rochelle saw weak, sick not fully infected people everywhere who were docile for the time being, maybe some were getting verbally agrressive and pale.
    they decided to run to the roof and see whats happening to see fires on the horizon and on the building and helicopters flying off leaving them. they decide somethings off so they get a weapon found on the roof and slowly walk back down expecting people to just be pannicking and on the floor sick. only to see fully infected people. some already mutating. the infected turn to see the carriers. and go beserk.
    i like this series youve done its very cool.

      it coulda been alot differant but not far off from this.
      like maybe some people were already attacking others before they got to the roof but the 4 didnt see it they only heard the screaming so they thought taking pistols was the right choice.
      idk it was def something like i described though

      Ellis for one has a friendly fire line that says

    I think the reason why the survivors are surprised by the infected is due to the fact that they probably stayed in the stairway the entire time. Everyone else is either on the roof getting evacuated, or they're in the hotel itself already infected...
    But this doesn't explain why the staircase suddenly gets blocked, and the survivors for some reason lost the guns they had in the cinematic.

    based on all the sleeping bags around its safe to say they only met after they were abandoned, if you remove the areas in the intro its very likely they only met as they were climbing the stairs, i fully believe that they were chilling in their rooms and once they reached thew top and the helicopter takes off that's when the infection has reached them.
    unlike l4d1 its very likely they only just met, where are the l4d1 crew has probably been together for a few weeks post infection.
    nick, coach, ellis and rochelle very likely only talked to each other once they found out they were "left for dead". [heh]

Ignoring the fact said colas were on the ground of a pillaged super market with clear signs of violence and said carriers might have used the package to bash away zombies, with how contagious the Flu is, the close contact between the drinks and the carriers could be enough to end him as soon as he tries to drink them.

    I feel like the mysteries behind the group’s first meeting are pretty obvious, they all heard there was going to be an evacuation, they each were near enough to the hotel for that to be their best option, they went there just as the zombies started to swarm the crowded building, which is why the Helicopter leaves the survivors behind, the evacuation center has been overrun just as the Survivors reach it. They all meet up on the roof and are forced to work together to survive. It’s not that crazy that they haven’t seen zombies yet, especially since this area was previously safe since it was being used to evacuate people, but it eventually attracted the horde.

    From what Ive put together, the rooftops was supposed to be an evacuation spot for survivors, our 4 protags are the stragglers who didn’t make it in time as the whirlybirds leave them, which I think explains why they’re going to the mall to try and catch another evac ride. As for Rochelle’s comment before that bit about seeing the zombies, I think now that she is in with a group of people and is kinda in the “downtime” on the rooftop, she’s just expressing her disbelief to someone (other protags) to cope. However I can agree it’s odd that she’s just now saying something about it despite working with the news station, but it could possibly be explained away by the fact that she’s just now in the mess herself and experiencing it first hand and not through footage

The hotel starts catching fire and gets overrun, maybe not in that order, while they're the last to make it to the roof as the chopper leaves in a panic. Could be why CEDA had a main office at the top floor. Begin campaign with little info on eachother and the zombies?

Then the helicopter thing happens. they go back down and by the time they go back down things like chargers, have entered the building as it’s being overrun and knocked out the staircases, forcing them to go through the populated hallways. if they arrived at this evacuation point even half an hour before it was overrun, they would have entered the stairwell before zombies started rising up the levels and infecting people as they go up. We see plenty of zombies, climbing up the walls and windows specifically special infected appearing on rooftops so it’s not entirely unlikely. It got overrun from outside access points, leaving the stairwell completely closed off . Even more plausible as stairwell doors tend to be heavier than regular doors so regular non heavy infected can’t break them or sense survivors thru them.

    1:40 its also confusing because we do kinda see how the survivors get to the roof, in the intro trailer that you see when you boot up the game you see them walking up the stairs to the roof, you can hear it when coach says "who the hell puts an evac station up 50 flights of goddamn stairs?" which is also confusing as in the scene before this they are seen fighting zombies, i believe that in the stairs scene they are seen with guns

      2:38 its also very very weird, because if so they knew each others names, nick says "well COACH, maybe the helicopter- maybe its made of chocolate"

    It's worth noting that,
    1. Whitaker did not do just fine, many point out that, when you no-clip to take a look at him shooting down a way to the mall, his Dead Center model is a low poly design shared by a higher quality uncommon survivor infected from The Passing you can chase down, suggesting he got infected on his way to the same city while venturing outside.
    2. I'm pretty sure it's usually Rochelle that introduces the new special infected, maybe even all. Shows her journalism background but also that maybe some places "farther from patient 0" could've had survivors better informed/prepared than others via news shows going after the information, maybe to undo any "damage control" CEDA or another entity could've employed back when they though the green flu was manageable. Iirc she's even all the way from Ohio and was sent to produce news like she mentioned, backed by wiki/promo material.

      In chapter 1 of DC, Ro has a lot of lines like "They've been calling them (Insert SI Name)" and Nick will often respond with the voice lines I showed in the video.
      Rochelle certainly knows the name of the special infected because of her news connections that is for sure and I should have showed that. Rochelle uses that info and basically forwards it to the survivors throughout the duration of DC.
      As for Whitaker, yea could have gone more in depth there.

    I believe friendly fire with the boomer bile was once possible in early releases of the console version. I don’t see or have footage but going off memory I feel that I remember throwing it at one of the survivors and it would act just like a boom puked on them, summoning a hoard and only perusing the affected survivor.

    dunno if its mentioned yet, but in the chapter one elevator, if a survivor dies before reaching the elevator, a unique voice line will play based on who the dead person was. Usually something along the lines of "who was that guys name" or something
