Budokai is better than Tenkaichi, because the attacks & special moves are more intense & realistic in Budokai. Tenkaichi characters looks dull & Budokai characters looks more vibrant. Even though Tenkaichi has more characters, the characters attacks are repetitive & easy to do making it boring. Budokai 3's opening is stuck in my head from my childhood haha. Such a goated song. I was honestly shocked learning that americans didn't have the vocals in the opening many years later.
0:39 Yamcha dying to a saibaman is the Hank Pym slapping his wife of DBZ. Except it's probably even less fair. The Budokai 3 vocal intro is so iconic to anyone who was lucky enough to play the games in a PAL region growing up! I played both Budokai 2, and Budokai Tenkaichi 2, and it felt like it was a massive stepback from the previous game, which felt like more a passion project, and literally pushed the console to it's limits at the time, with it being on the Gamecube, and the later game on the Wii.
I am not feeling the disrespect shown towards the songs in the Tenkaichi 1 and 2 intros. Those intros were absolute fire, they did their job of getting me hyped for playing those games in ways few games could.
Budokai laid the foundation for a masterpiece to be built later on. That is undeniable. BT3 is a generation defining game. One of the greatest fighting games ever conceived and the price it commands today substantiates that fact. I love Budokai, but nobody is going to choose those games over Mortal Kombat. Especially when MK Deception came out. The only who would are hardcore DB fans, which is fine, but personal bias is not a suitable substitute for factual evidence. This is why the Tenkaichi games are superior. While the Budokai games were competing amongst other franchises Tenkaichi cornered multiple niche markets while also creating a space in EVERY gamer's collection.
Liked both but the Budokai series, expecially the third, was the one that really made the experience of playing a DBZ game a cohesive one, with the 2D view so you don't get lost. Tenkaichi introduced a more accurate and fast way to fight but it also added confusion, and instead on focusing on technique and strategy you focus on positioning in space to overcome the opponent, as you have 3 planes to worry about instead of 2, when evading (and attacking). Also the story mode is what made this game great in the end, so I would pick less character and unique, that are placed in a good recreation of the actual anime, instead of a story mode that rely on static screens with images and text to tell the story, and jump from combat to combat.... I wish they could merge the attention to details of the Kakarot game with the depth and lenght of these games, and that would be a real dream for DB fans.
Tenkaichi 3 is still alive and well today. Budokai came out first and thus has the nostalgic edge, that said, the Tenkaichi series is still the only series to date that feels like a Dragon Ball simulator.
I like Budokai 3 best of those 6 games. I like 2D perspective, more cinematic Ultimates, overall better graphics and also I feel that beam clashes worked best in this one. Intro was also best out of all 6. With that being said Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is very, VERY close 2nd here for me. I like roster, destructible environment, freedom of movement and melee clashes were better in this one. Team battles were also great, so I can choose more than one of my favorite characters. Budokai 3 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 were the pinnacle of anime games of PS2 console gen(forgot which one it was), the only thing that would make one better over the other is personal preference, both being my 2 favorite PS2 DBZ/anime games. Makes it even better since BT makes a comeback soon with Sparking!Zero! Hopefully after success of Sparking!Zero Namco Bandai decides to revive Budokai series too, I’d love to have them both back with new installments.
Having played the hell out of ALL of these games as a kid, I would say Budokai 3 is the greatest overall game, but that Tenkaichi is a better series overall. Budokai 3 had the most refined combat, best story mode with lots of hidden secrets, and explosive, satisfying combat. BT2 had the most comprehensive and longest story mode, though, and BT3 just an explosion of content. A lot of fun, but not quite the fighting game B3 was, in my opinion.
Only played the first Budokai game so I don't think I really got much say here... but man, was it weird watching Vegeta actually care enough about Nappa to get mad enough he goes Super Saiyayin over him.
Tenkaichi flew right past me as a kid. I rented the first game, got my butt spanked, didn't like change and never went back. Since then I finally did play 3 for a bit, and it's very good, no doubt about that. You can't beat the fast pace and nostalgia for the Budokai games for me tho.
Budokai all the way. I did enjoy the BT trilogy a fair bit, but I felt it really lacked the individuality that Budokai had. Both trilogies are great though, and I own multiple copies of all those games.
And both have their legacy successors, meaning fans continue to have options with regards to what kind of game they want. Budokai's current legacy successor is, of course, FighterZ. Though more grounded than Budokai, the 2D fighting plane and general style definitely owes much to Budokai. Budokai Tenkaichi's legacy successor is the upcoming Sparking! Zero, which was definitely by design.
Sparking! Zero is actually a direct sequel, not merely a successor. It’s being worked on by a lot of the same people that worked on the previous games, and said previous games all used the Sparking! title in Japan. Also, the Raging Blast games are basically Sparking!/Tenkaichi titles in all but name.
I think Shin Budokai 1 & 2, Burst Limit, and Infinite World perfected the Budokai formula as these ganes were more faster and gave more Specials to pull off, as they aleo got rid of Dragon Rush from Budokai 3. I really enjoy these games so much more! :D
My problem with the sparking series IS the balance, it always has been. Every character played the same but with massively skewed damage output. I prefer budokai because of what you said, quality over quantity. In fighting games I don't care for lore accuracy, I would watch the show for that. If I'm playing a fighting game I want it to be fair so I know it wasn't an arbitrary damage boost that helped me win. This is why I'll never understand someone who says chaotzu could never beat gogeta so gogeta SHOULD be insanely overpowered, it's like yeah we all know that but those two would never spar in the first place so if we're going by lore accuracy why are we able to pit them against each other? I'm digressing, but my point is that if I'm picking gogeta I want to know my opponent stands some sort of chance regardless of what character they pick and if they are new or not. This is why I also prefer FighterZ, but to be fair SSJ4 gogeta IS broken in fighterZ which is why I generally don't use him.
I absolutely loved the Budokai play style more, and the character selection of tenkaichi more. But overall, preferred Budokai, especially 3. The gameplay just seemed a lot more straight forward than Tenkaichi. But I can understand why some would like it more.
Ive bee arguing this for sone time now. Budokai 3 is objectively one of the greatest fighting games, in fighting game history. It took an entirely new and unique approach, to not onky what Ultimate battle 22 tried to be, But it also pioneered the camoaing fir BT and the games forward. Its ease of acces to combos, but presentatio of techincal skill, allowed for SO MUCH unique gameplay and replayability. Not only this, but Budokai 3 opened the gates for multiple timelines being explored, with s multitude of outcomes. It's attention to detail was so INCREDIBLE. The player felt like the character they played, and the moments, ultimate presented is STILLZ UNMATCHED, (until fighter z imo) I will die in this hill.
Tenkaichi's camera system just never made sense to me, honestly. Budokai just felt better overall, hence why I am glad it was sorta brought back in FighterZ.
Budokai 2 is my favorite. The AI is very fair, gameplay is not as complex and unfair like 3, I enjoy the fast paced board game campaign, and just the right amount of characters! 10:00 The Challengers song rocks btw, I know its plagiarized but it's better than the source material!
Tenkaichi set the stage going forward for allll Anime fighting games, they all pretty much follow the 3D open stage fighting. However Budokai was a full fledged fantastic fighting game in its own right. To say one is better than the other is a disservice to both of them. They both were revolutionary and deserve a spot at the top
If BT3 had B3 models it would of been perfect. Both third versions were great. I'd have to hand it to bt3 tho. The randomness of Dragon rush makes replays tedious. I got the HD collection but never finished B3 cause of dragon rush
Well I can certainly pick which trilogy had the better title: DBZ Budokai. The Budokai Tenkaichi title was just a result of Western publishers trying to capitalize on the Budokai trilogy's success, since Sparking was the original Japanese title for that series. Plus there's the fact that Budokai Tenkaichi is a reversal of the word Tenkaichi Budokai, which translates to "Strongest Under the Heavens Martial Arts Tournament", so flipping it meses up the translation. It's especially dumb in retrospect since the new game Sparking Zero is using the original brand name in even the overseas releases, but of course they have to keep reminding us Western fans in the trailers that it's a continuation of the Budokai Tenkaichi series to make up for their past marketing ploys, heh. Still, they were all classics. Budokai 1 may not have much in terms of gameplay in retrospect, but it still had the best story mode of that trilogy with the cutscenes and all (even if it left out the last arc). Tenkaichi 2 (or Sparking Neo in Japan), on the other hand, had the best story mode of that trilogy in my book. Budokai 3 might've had a similar story mode with the flying around the maps feature, but you could only play one character's story at a time so that kinda made it restrictive. Plus Tenkaichi 2 at least had some cutscenes. I also do like Budokai 2's story mode for the sake of creativity, even if the board game concept was too out there for some fans. To me, it's like Dragon Ball meets Mario Party.
All 3 budokai are worthwhile experiences but only bt2 and bt3 are worthwhile to play through, so budokai trilogy by default objectively but I prefer to play bt3 specifically out of all 6
Tenkaichi series felt like a PROPER DBZ fight with the environments being so open. Budokai on the other hand feels ok but feels like playing a classic generic fighting game at times like Tekken or street fighter.
The Tenkaichi series easily takes it due to the amount of depth they have (mainly the second & third) but Budokai 3 definitely gives them a run for their money in certain aspects Also the American versions had the better intros don’t care what anyone says
I like both. But the first game I played was the tankaichi 3 on PS2. I went to my friends place back then and I was mesmerized by the graphics & the gameplay. Man the nostalgia hits hard with this one. I just bought a retractable bsp D8 controller for my phone and the experience has been great with the emulation of PS2,Dreamcast,GameCube & psp is awesome. Experiencing all sorts of games again. The best way to experience old school games
My thing is I’ve never thought that the Budokai games felt like a proper representation of fights from dragon ball. The 3d environment just suits the franchise better in my opinion if handled correctly. It doesn’t mean that the budokai games are bad, but tenkaichi “feels” more like a dbz fight. I mean I guess you could argue that budokai feels more like fights from dragon ball, and tenkaichi feels more like fights from Z? Also, the budokai games are very clunky. I know some people might be upset from me saying that, but you’d have a hard time convincing me otherwise. The shin budokai games are honestly the smoothest feeling ones. (Besides maybe burst limit which I haven’t played) I’ve never even really liked the budokai games from the second one onwards graphically. The character models look weird to me. Especially their heads/faces. I played both franchises as a kid but I’ll always prefer tenkaichi.
Playing Budokai after experiencing tenkaichi, it just feels so slow and restrictive. The intensity and ferocity is painfully missed in budokai. It's a good fighting game that might have been better suited for the original dragonball story, but tenkaichi fits dbz like a glove. I prefer games that don't limit my freedom of movement, and i remember back in the day almost immediately dropping the budokai games because of how prehistoric they felt compared to tenkaichi. Budokai are good fighting games, but tenkaichi just gets dragonball in s way no other installment really does.
Tenkaichi 3 is peak anime fighting game. As for 2D , Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 or 5 are the best. Budokai 3 comes right after. Sparking Zero is coming to top BT3 if everything goes as it should.
My ranking from best to worst (imo, the ones i like the most vs the least) Budokai 3, Budokai tenkaichi 3, Budokai tenkaichi 2, budokai 1, Budokai tenkaichi 1, budokai 2.
While I still think that B2 has the best fighting controls in the series, I think B3 is the best game overall. I do really like the BT trilogy but I always found the actual fighting not be great.
I've only played the 3rd iteration of both series. But as much as I love traditional fighters (And I really LOVE traditional fighters), Budokai 3 never really hit it for me. Characters being hit by supers just float like they were slapped. The combat feels incredibly slow, agonizingly so. And the fact that you can't just pick it up and play because you have to set abilities and transformations in a limited way for each character already makes it hard to play when friends come around. It feels like there's no hype and characters move around in a small arena. Budokai 3 does have better animations for its supers, however.
I had Tenkaichi Tag Team and I gotta say the AI was awful so they had to bombard you with like 4 enemies at once to increase difficulty. The 3D fighting sounds great on paper but it doesnt really translate to much imo. The novelty of these amazing looking moves wears off quickly. Never played Budokai but old 2D DB fighters were good so I'd pick them...
I’m not breaking any new ground when I say this, but budokai 3 absolutely fucks. Hard.
His videos always make me look forward to Sunday.
I'd have to give the edge to the Tenkaichi trilogy. Both are great but the first two Budokai games are a little bit lacking in gameplay.
Budokai turns into a completely different game once people actually learn about combo canceling and proper use of capsules.

Tenkaichi 3 is still alive and well today. Budokai came out first and thus has the nostalgic edge, that said, the Tenkaichi series is still the only series to date that feels like a Dragon Ball simulator.
Sparking Zero might just be the best game of them all
I like Budokai 3 best of those 6 games.
I know a lot of people have love for Budokai, but for me it’s Tenkaichi and it isn’t relatively close. BT3 is the best DBZ game I’ve ever played.
😂
Only played the first Budokai game so I don't think I really got much say here... but man, was it weird watching Vegeta actually care enough about Nappa to get mad enough he goes Super Saiyayin over him.
Tenkaichi flew right past me as a kid. I rented the first game, got my butt spanked, didn't like change and never went back. Since then I finally did play 3 for a bit, and it's very good, no doubt about that. You can't beat the fast pace and nostalgia for the Budokai games for me tho.
I would say I like both the Budokai music is amazing the Tenkaichi and not really but still love them both
Budokai all the way. I did enjoy the BT trilogy a fair bit, but I felt it really lacked the individuality that Budokai had. Both trilogies are great though, and I own multiple copies of all those games.
Whatever their differences, I feel like I should acquire a copy of all of them. It annoys me how many awesome games I missed from that generation.
Tenkaichi 2 has a what if mode of brave and noble Raditz giving his life to save his loved ones.
Nothing Budokai has can match that.
Budokai 1 > Tenkaichi 1
Budokai 2 < Tenkaichi 2
Budokai 3/IW >< Tenkaichi 3
Ah the good ol days when Bandai could put out a decent arena fighter coughkamenriderclimaxscramblecough
The best time i have with a dragon ball Game was with the Budokai 2 board game story mode,so...
The player felt like the character they played, and the moments, ultimate presented is STILLZ UNMATCHED, (until fighter z imo)
I will die in this hill.
Tenkaichi's camera system just never made sense to me, honestly.
Budokai just felt better overall, hence why I am glad it was sorta brought back in FighterZ.
I agree, the camera is unwieldy and doesn't always show what you need to see when you need to.
@@Spiritus-Gladius Skill yourself some pün, you Dilbert.
Even Flandrew admitted it was "hard to master" in the video above.
delusional
@@TeamBelmont91 Hard to master doesn't mean it's not easy to pick up.
@@Blackpapalink Never said it wasn't.
Before you say it, I never got to play infinite world, wasnt aware of it until years later
Visuals and music of the Budokai series, but the gameplay and roster of Tenkaichi. Tenkaichi is the peak Dragonball game.
I only ever had the opportunity to play the Budokai trilogy. So for me, by default and bias, Budokai trilogy. I sank so many hours in 1 and 2.
delusional
Budokai Trilogy for the win
Tenkaichi is just hard to have fun with when in Multiplayer.
All 3 budokai are worthwhile experiences but only bt2 and bt3 are worthwhile to play through, so budokai trilogy by default objectively but I prefer to play bt3 specifically out of all 6
Bodukai 3 op is goat ! (With vocals)
I love both but i prefer the gameplay & story modes in the OG Budokai trilogy
Tenkaichi 2 is the best of both worlds in that regard
delusional
budokai 3 had the best combat hands down, even today it still fucks
Whe i was a kid i knew how to play very fluently just like i play madden or 2k
4:27 If that's Evil Goku from Wish, is Goku Black Great Value Evil Goku?
Bodukai tenkaichi 3 is the best
As the numbers drop, you often do db... classic move
Budokai was a fighting game with DBZ characters in it.
Tenkaichi was a DBZ fighting game.
I’m replaying both budokai 3 and budokai tenkaichi 3.
If Tenkaichi 3 had Tenkaichi's 2 Campaign mode, it would be The Best DBZ game. And I'm willing to die on this hill kkkkkkk
Tenkaichi series felt like a PROPER DBZ fight with the environments being so open. Budokai on the other hand feels ok but feels like playing a classic generic fighting game at times like Tekken or street fighter.
I choose both
The Tenkaichi series easily takes it due to the amount of depth they have (mainly the second & third) but Budokai 3 definitely gives them a run for their money in certain aspects
Also the American versions had the better intros don’t care what anyone says
I prefer the tenkaichi series. Even made a whole video on this. lol
Yamcha owned.
(Besides maybe burst limit which I haven’t played)
I’ve never even really liked the budokai games from the second one onwards graphically. The character models look weird to me. Especially their heads/faces. I played both franchises as a kid but I’ll always prefer tenkaichi.
You should clarify "fighting" trilogy. The best Dragon Ball Game trilogy is Legacy of Goku, LOG2 and Buu's Fury on GBA
The combat system was better in Budokai 3 and Infinite World. Tenkaichi had more stuff but the older games had better quality in that area.
I can't choose one trilogy tbh. I grew up playing both on one week rentals from the video store 😂 really depends on the day for me tbh
To this day tenkaichi 3 is the only dbz game with an acceptable ammount of og characters!
Tenkaichi 3 and infinite world are the best
While I still think that B2 has the best fighting controls in the series, I think B3 is the best game overall. I do really like the BT trilogy but I always found the actual fighting not be great.
budokai is for people who like traditional fighting games, and as someone who doesnt, tenkaichi appeals to me way more lol
Why is nobody ever talk about DB Raging Blast 1&2 ?
To the emulator I go
Burst Limit still has the best song imo. Just saying.
Tenkaichi is the best
dang… so that means that dragon ball fighterZ is basically Budokai 4, and sparking zero is Budokai Tenkaichi 4
If Budokai 3 didnt have Dragon Rush it would be the best game. But the rock paper scissors just drags it down too much for me now
Budokai 3 is the goat
Budokai is the best.
