I have a Gen 2 19. I purchased it in 2009 for dirt cheap, like $100, from a range that used it as a rental. This thing was WORN and had who knows how many rounds through it. I sent it to Glock to be refub'd, cost me like $110. They replaced the frame, barrel, some FCG parts, refinished the slide. I got it back looking dang near brand new. Shoots great.....for a Glock with a terrible trigger.
Glock triggers are perfect for defensive use. You don’t want a light trigger when adrenaline is spiking through your body
@@waholoopesorry74I bought my G23 in 1989. It had the new york trigger (ick, 11 lbs.), I changed it to the lower pressure 4.5 lbs. It's now much more shootable.
Hold up. They replaced the frame? With another gen 2 or later version???
@@Bobdixon_Moonvarga_Dancer_III Another gen 2. It was pretty worn. Glock's refurb program is awesome.
@@riccochet704was the refinishing gen 2 style or modern?
To be honest I prefer the old slide finish over the new generations.
Who doesn’t? And that front serrations looks extremely stupid and useless.
I agree, GEN2 remains my favourite.
@@corycarlson8712depends with old finish you are referring to. The old frying pan gen 3 finish from 1999 to 2010 was pretty good. The gen 2 finish on this video is more of a nitrating
@@lancedooley7558they are all good , but preferences. The gen5 to me is slippery if your hands are sweaty doing class or outdoor shooting, gen 3 frying pan also slippery but just as durable.
Gen2 my favorite. Tough finish that is noticeably grippier, and looks the coolest if you ask me ,
@@lancedooley7558 "Indestructible" are you really sure? I don't think so.
I live in South Africa and trust my life daily to my Glock 17 Gen 2. They work very hard in this place and never fail to perform. Doing the job they were designed for. Not sexy or fancy like a lot of other Pretenders to the throne. Just the most reliable tool on earth. And not Balistc Gell or plinking. Real results.
This was my first purchase 12 years ago. Was the perfect pistol for a first time owner for range practice and home defense. It holds a special place in my heart and I’ll keep it forever.
You have an old Metropolitan Police DC Glock 17. I Can tell buy the serial number, beginning with the MP and ending with DC. They are great guns ! Only wish I could have kept mine.
It’s the one that started it ALL for me! In 94’ I stood outside my local gunshop waiting on them to open on my 21st Bday to buy mine. Now age 50, I’ve had EVERY make and model made almost but this one was ALWAYS special to me because it was my first still in my safe!#Glock17#Gen2
I recently acquired a gen 2 17 LE turn in. The serial number is similar to yours. I was told by Glock MP stands for metro police and the DC at the end is for DC metro PD. Shoots great. Just for fun I sent it back to Glock to look over since it eas fron 1995. They replaced everything internal except for the barrel. They did the Extractor, springs, trigger, connecter.. everything including the sights and sent it back to me. Didnt charge me a dime. Love this gun.
A used Gen 2 like this was my very first Glock in the early 1990s. Thanks for the memories.
My original gen2 model 19 is still one of my favorites.
And the price of Gen 2s skyrockets in 3...2...1...
😅
I dearly loved the Tennifer finish. I still have a few gen 3’s with it and they look new. The later gen 3’s and gen 4’s will get a mark if you look at it too hard. Another great video sir.
I have a few Gen2 guns. The magazines are steel lined. The difference is the steel lining does not go all the way around the interior. This lets the older magazines flex a tad, and they do not fall free if there is ammo in them.
I have a G17 & G20 both Gen 2, both pawn shop finds. I upgraded the internals & painted the frames. Great shooters. I like the older guns.
the exact glock gen 2 that i bought in 1989 and the only problems i had was when i tried lead rounds early on about 5 of them and never again,,,stove pipes,,,, bought it with nite sighte that went black around 2012 or 13,,,,,,still runs as new,,,,my fav 9mm, thanks sootch00,,,great video as usual
I bought one of these when I went to the police academy in ‘97. GREAT GUN! 💪🏾
Gen 2 were tennifer. Glock didn't stop using the tennifer process until 2010. And they were shipped in the tupperware box. I bought mine when that was the only Glock on the market.
The LE trade ins from Aims Surplus and other online places are reportedly from DC Metropolitan Police.
Mt guess is the serial numbers are specific to that agency. MP****DC, MP for Metropolitan Police the DC for District of Columbia.
Thanks for the info Leoy!
I got a police trade in gen2 17 from classic firearms a couple of years back. Always wondered what department it came from
I just bought a reproduction copy of the original Glock 17 Gen 1, I have no regrets
I have a Gen 2 19, 21, 23 and just traded in my 20 for a Gen 5 20. They all shoot good.
Glock 19 gen 3 is what I have, but Glock is the best pistol for reliability I have ever seen, and the Glock company is the best for customer support and fixing anything that might happen to the best gun in the world to me, I won't leave home here in Kentucky without it.
I don’t care what anyone says, Glocks are a great firearm for the money. I have a 21sf, 19. Both gen 3. I have other brands as well. But the more expensive ones have something to watch out for. My HK USP 9 won’t shoot any of my cheap 115 grain gun show ammo. Has to be 124 grain or more. My Sig P220 has a annoying pinch of the finger every time I pull the trigger. Everyone knows how dramatic 1911’s can be. I can go on and on. But my Glocks, always reliable.
Love my Glock 17 Gen 4! I bought this stud of a pistol mainly because of you Sootch!!!
Excuse me while I go fondle my Gen 2 G19, completely stock (not upgraded). It came with the non-captured guide rod/spring, which I replaced with an OE captured spring. Love that gun.
In nine years, the first Glocks will qualify as Curio and Relic firearms.
I have a G20 Gen 2. Purchased it new in the 90s. Works fine. Never saw a reason to replace it.
If it works,why change
You forgot to mention the early Gen 5 pistols having the magwell cut like that of a Gen 2 and the lack of front slide serration.
When I was issued my G17 Gen2 back in 1994 the rep explained that the Tennifer finish was a surface treatment for the metal. It was separate from the phosphate finish. They explained that even if the phosphate wore off, the Tennifer would remain. I still have that gun. It’s worn and heavily used but still in perfect working order. I never had any rust issues with it.
Exactly. The Tenifer is a treatment that bonds with the metal itself. Makes the steel of the slide extremely hard.
My agency carried the Glock 17 from 1990- 2007. It’s an effective weapon.
Still have my original Gen 2 purchased in 1992...still looks great and shoots even better!
Another great video. Thanks! As always, love the quote and the outtakes at the end too.
Just bought one of these from aim surplus, my new favorite pistol and my new carry gun as well.
Me too
Gen2 is the best generation Glock made
I have a Gen3 and yeah the darn thing just shoots so well for me and has been problem free. The gun you love to hate and hate to love!
Intetesting tidbit - has an MPDC (Wahington DC) serial number WITHOUT the MPDC rollmark on the right side of the slide..
Would love to see Glock make brand new Gen. 2s available to the public !
Get a 3d printer and then make and gen or combination of gens you want!
Love my gen 5 19, 23 and 26. Gen 2s have such a classic look 👍
Always a great review - good Glock gun talk.
I seen gen 2 at my local gun shop yesterday it was nostalgic
If the trigger bar / connector are nickel, they are updated. I was a Glock armor back then.
What you may not know, is that is from the D.C. Police Department. The first U.S. Police Department to actually issue the Glock 17. I own my issued gen. 2, which I carried for 24 years. That weapon probably has a lot of history!!! I also own a gen. 1, which is stamped “MPDC” on the side of the slide. I may be able to find out who that weapon was issued to. The serial number starts with “MP” (Metropolitan Police) and ends with “DC” (District of Columbia)
The first dept. to issue the Glock was Colby, Kansas
Sootch, silver trigger bar designates upgraded part, if its black its the old parts, if all original oem parts.
Bought one like new in the box used. Is a factory adjustable rear sight version. Even marked on the Tupperware box.
Nice
Glocks just work . They just need stipple job , ghost ring sights . I love a mostly stock Glock
Nice glock 17 gen 2 I've got gen 3 love it thanks for sharing sootch00
I much preferred my Gen2 guns to the Gen3 or Gen4 because I hated the finger groove grip.
Bought and sold one a couple of years back. Wish I had kept!
I have a mint condition 89 gen2 17. I carry it from time to time, it's a great pistol.
Those marks on the bottom of the frame? Not that it was dropped, that was carried for years by a right handed uniformed officer. Every time he got in the car, that part hit the seat belt receiver, and then poking around with the metal end of the seat belt chewed up the frame a tiny bit more.
That, plus banging into doors and door frames while carried in a typical uniform holster for years.
Thanks Sootch!
I just bought a Gen 2 Glock 21 .45, two days ago, used but in in 80% condition. It too is an LEO trade in, and the 3 mags that came with it are also marked "Restricted LEO/GOVERNMENT only, 13 rd and steel insert. It is a two pin + 1, otherwise exactly as the G17 in this video.
I bought it for $275.00 out the door. Stripped it cleaned it and I've already put 500 rounds through it without a single malfunction. Very accurate and easy to shoot. I'm loving it! 👍
PS. Mine is all original including the sights everyone likes to hate on. I've never had an issue with Glick factory sights.
I own a Gen 2 Glock 23 chambered in.40 S&W and carry it daily. Its a great shooter and for some reason, the trigger reset seems quicker than the Gen 3,s. Love the review Sootch, thanks 👍
Same mine is A gen 2 g23 from Sep of 1990
@@Draggy444 mine was last year of production, 1997, if I'm not mistaken.
I'm just commenting cause it's funny to see this as I've got a very early gen 2 17 on my desk
Love gen 2 way better then the others
Sootch00 the great American man.
Love your channel
14:36 41 is long slide 45, 31 is 357 sig. great video, always a fan!
Your G17Gen2 by SN, was from the Metropolitan Police, District of Columbia. That’s why it starts MPXXXXDC
I own the 17 and 19 gen2. Love the nostalgia and reliability. 17 gen2 saved my life and a loved one in 1993.
What happened?
@felixdewinter3484 that's an in person conversation
@@pro-tekprofessionalservice1531 why? What have you got to hide? You just admitted to doing something most Americans will never do, using a gun to “save their life and a loved one” in 1993. What are you ashamed of or what are you hiding? Or is the situation not as clear cut as you admitted to earlier?
@felixdewinter3484 I don't know you enough to give you or the internet the details. All you need to know is that I'm alive and here, the assailant is not, and that it was all legal.
@@pro-tekprofessionalservice1531 was it really? Seems there is something you’re not telling us given your evasion of the question to clarify. What are you hiding kid?
I bought a Gen 3 G23 when I got out of the Marines. It's a range toy now, but it still runs great after thousands of rounds through it.
@@Peter-nm1ps Former 0311s are pogs? Damn, must be a kinder and gentler Corps that you come from, boot.
@@Peter-nm1ps Ha, good joke 👍🏻
@@Peter-nm1psDon’t you bring Chesty into this.
Love my G17 L Gen 3
with 6.02" barrel
Yep, just needs a set of Talon rubberized grip tape. I have a G-22 gen 3, that had a very bad grip road rash.
Talons made it look brand new.
Good idea
I have a gen 2 g 21. 1995 It Jams alot. Been working it for a while. Get side tracked my other guns.
I hope you get your problem figured out. I've got a Gen2 G21 that I bought new back in the day. It's one of my favorite guns, and I've never had a problem with it (knock wood!)
I got three gen3 G19 police trade ins a while back. They were in very good condition, priced low, available, so I bought them. I'm seeing a bunch of Glocks in 40 now. If that is your cal and you want a good deal, get one. I like Glocks just fine. They definitely go bang every time.
I’m having the worst time finding websites with police trade ins actually in stock. Have had a few would be buys come back with a not in stock follow up email.
@Inkushu classic guns, not the cheapest, not the highest, but if they list it, you can get it. I got on their email list. You get the info, so you have a chance. Lots of emails! Delete is easy if it does not interest you.
There is a company that sells what is essentially machine cut skateboard tape templates for the grips on these. You have to put them on with a heat gun. They completely transform the grip and cover up all the holster carry marks. I also recommend an extended mag release. I believe the 40 or 45 release swaps right in.
That's talon grips. The new pro-grip texture is very good. It does wear as you carry it but I've just kept replacing it on my carry gun
My father in law carried a G17 Gen 2 when he was a cop a long time ago. I hope he passes it down to me some day 😁
I know looks don’t matter that much with guns or shouldn’t but I wish Glock would offer the gen 5 without the front serrations.
The Gen 5's didn't have front serrations when they first came out I know because I bought one and still have it but I personally like the front serrations better.
nice glock dive into the past mr. porter 👊
In 1992 we switched from Wheel guns and the police department went to Glocks. We could choose between the g17 and the g19 to buy and carry on duty. I chose the g17. Out in the streets in Patrol and in special units it saved my life a few times and is one of my favorite handguns of all time in my 30+ plus years of military and police career. From the time I got into my hands in 1992 it has never had any type of malfunction no matter what type of ammo I fired through it WITH very hard training, competition and actual self defense. Don't know real systems we actually just carried our flashlights and learn to use those in dark areas or at night and later with different models the rails appeared for attached flashlights Etc. By 17 is still a favorite for competition and my home security and being a Glock armor for many many years I replaced the internals with OEM Glock parts about 10 years ago and still never have had a problem no matter what type of ammo I put through it. An amazing handgun in my humble opinion and I am STILL here because of it.
Man that pinch 🤏🏼 between the slide and frame just triggers my ocd so much
Can you do a comparison video on all the gens of the Glocks? I would and I'm sure others would really like to see that. Thank you👍👍
Once I get the Gen 1 Classic, I'll do a comparison. Thanks
@@sootch00 thank you sir. I've been hoping for that.
Still have my Glock Gen 2 Glock 19, put some new night sights on it ....still works like a new gun although the back strap area like the one in the video is polymer polished LOL
Gen 2 and Gen 5 best Glocks
Hey sootch00 - It shows that those MCDC Glock 17 pistols were made in September
Of 1990.
It's the frying pan finish. You can also email glock and give them your SN and they will tell month and year. I did with my Gen 2 which ended up being a March 1995 production
Gen 2 did get steel lined mag. U notched yet too. I have one from 94 I bought new.
The Gen 1 did have the serial number also on the frame. The gen 1 barrel was not "silver". The gen 2 does have the tenifer treatment. Its a metal treatment, not a finish. The phosphate finish is the exterior finish on the slide. Even if it wears off the slide is still protected due to the tenifer treatment. Your serial number indiciates it was a Metro DC gun. The gen 1s that were just had MPDC engraved on the slide and was not part of the serial number. I love gen 2 Glocks. Ive owed each generation but prefer gen 2 and carry a Gen 2 Glock 19 daily.
Another awesome detailed review 👍thx
Thanks for watching Brother!
Who else think that glocks look much cooler without the pic rail?
Me! I don't like the front serrations either.
True but having a weapon mount light is game changer.
The tenifer was not the black finish. It was the silver color you see under the black. They just changed the black finishes over the years. They stopped applying tenifer sometime in the Gen 4’s.
I’ve never saw a gen3 with the cut out in the grip, and the first gen5 pistols did have the cut out.
Serial number prefix MP and suffix DC. Metro Police District of Columbia. You sir have a capital police surplus gen 2!
The hole in the grip base behind the magazine was to fit a shoulder stock. Think broomhandle 👍
My Glock 39 has the same finish it’s like a parkerized finish.
Thanks
My favor Glock 17, because can't have a gen 1, but i want still to buy gen 1 someday and look and feels pebble finish grip
polished to a shine, the best coating there is.
The scuffing along the right side is from rubbing the door frame of patrol cars as the officers who wore this gun got in and out.
Wow this was a great find you don't see Gen.1's very often. A few years ago I was watching Scootch00 show the Millitary 19x in FDE , later the Police/civilian version came out Model 45 gen5. Hybrid 19/17 My favorite. Also Model 43x 10rds slim line. But what made this Model GREAT was Shield Arms 15rd. Magazines, same capacity as the Bigger 19 , but 43x is 7/8" thick slim line 3.4" barrel three finger full-grip, shoots like the much bigger Model 19 , 3" groups at 30' makes the 43x M.O.S Outstanding slim line Glock . Glock store Double Diamond trigger connector link 3.5lbs. used with All stock springs makes it a 4.5lb. trigger, slightly shorter take up, CRISP CLEAN BRAKE, slightly shorter to reset and very smooth pull all the way through, great improvement for accuracy especially for longer shots 30-40 ft out.
I found one for $278. Bucks 😊7/2/23 I’m A very happy law abiding citizen 🎉 thx for your review God Bless you
I have a Gen 2 G17 from 1992 and a G19 from 1994. I'm pretty sure and would bet money that your Law Enforcement Only magazine is a Gen 2, not only due to the era but also how much of that metal liner is exposed up top. Gen 2 magazines were metal lined, and they looked like yours. Gen 3 and onward had less exposed metal up top. Only Gen 1 lacked the liner and would stick, which is why Gens 1 and 2 had those cutouts at the mag well
Thank you for the informative video. I would like to know if Gen 3 mags will fit my 17 Gen 2. From the context of your video, I think it will, but you did not state that with certainty. I am interested in purchasing additional mags for it and find only new ones for Gen 3-5.
They will.
My uncle has one. He said I could have it someday.

what ammo brand can you recommend for Glock 17 Gen 5? it's my first time to own a Glock pistol.
You can add a front rail to this pistol with a kit from Recover Tactical. You'd probably then need to have a custom holster made.
I own a original Gen 1. I simply contacted Glocks customer service by email and they were really quick to respond with the date it was made (July 87).
As a Glock fan, I wish Glock would offer all new models with the original finish along with a slide with no serrations. Keep the original pebble grip and make the grip just a bit slimmer and narrower. Offer a better trigger with night sights right out of the box.
The scratches to the grip frame on your Glock look like the scratches my duty pistol would get from the seat belt buckles while on patrol. I doubt your gun was dropped much. Those marks usually look different on Glocks. The Tenifer finish was a metal treatment that was silver when applied, and the guns were then coated with a black flat coating. The Tenifer finish was superior in resisting corrosion, but proved toxic environmentally, and was eventually dropped. I wish they still applied Tenifer to their guns.
GEN2 is probably still the best generation of GLOCK, the only drawback is that will be almost impossible to fit a new extractor in the slide.
I turned my Glock 22 gen 2 into a gen 3 by just buying the lower. It also can be converted to a .357Sig
