  • From film You Were Never Lovelier
    Columbia Picture (1942)
    Director: William A. Seiter
    Screenplay: Michael Fessier, Ernest
Songs: by Jerome Kern and Johnny
You Were Never Lovelier was Rita's third and last film released in 1942 and her second time as Fred Astaire's dancing partner. Except for "The Shorty George" number, all their dances were rehearsed in the attic of a funeral parlor! They had to stop every time a funeral procession came through and couldn't start up again until all the mourners had left. But if those conditions disrupted rehearsals, it didn't show on-screen. The results were fabulous. Rita later called this movie one of her favorites, but it was also memorable to her for another reason. During rehearsals of "The Shorty George", Rita experienced one of her "most embarrassing" moments when she fell down during the dance and knocked herself out cold! The film is set in what was one of Hollywood's favorite locales at the time, Buenos Aires, and also features Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra to add to the Latin flavor of this memorable musical.

In an interview with Dick Cavett Fred Astaire said he really loved dancing with Rita Hayworth. She was trained as a dancer almost since the time she could walk. He told the story about how Astaire had to have a meeting with a movie producer and he did what he could do to cut it short. For as he said it, "I was going to dance with Rita Hayworth!" Rita called the films she made with Fred Astaire her 'jewels' because she knew it was the culmination of all her hard training and early dancing career with her father - that she could almost match the matchless talent of Fred Astaire. And that is why he too so enjoyed dancing with her because she was almost his equal in a way that no-one else was, or at least that is how I see it.

She came from a family of professional Spanish dancers and her father taught her extremely well, unfortunately by the high cost of making her suffer by his perfectionism and abusive behavior. She surely could not enjoy childhood, at all. Dancing gave her so much pride and joy in movies, but so much pain and suffering in real life with her father exploirong her to the core. It is so heartbreaking that she was so utterly unhappy in her relationships with men. Most just wanted to take advantage of her. She was such a sad soul. Her eyes were sad, desolate. But when she danced, it was as if sunshine came to her being. So spectacular she was!

People alway try to come for Rita saying she was not as skilled as other well-trained dancers such as Cyd Charisse, but man, the passion, emotion and grace Hayworth conveys when dancing and teaming up w/Fred -or on her own- remains unparalelled.
Watching her/reading books about her moves something deep inside me and lifts my spirits whenever I'm having a rough patch.
She really was one of a kind and had something others did not.

Actually, the only dancer who truly upstaged him was Eleanor Powell, with whom Astaire was never paired again after “Broadway Melody of 1940”. Their outstanding “Begin the Beguine” tap dance sequence is the most memorable of its kind in Hollywood, but Ellie was too much of a threat to Astaire, as well as other male dancers, and she consequently had difficulty getting roles.

I have no idea what the title was; or what it was about; all I know is ... for the first time in my worldly life ~ I saw a REAL ACTUAL GODDESS. The most stunning Beauty. PERFECTION. A warm gentle sultry voice. I didn't know the word 'sultry' yet ~ but I started to get to know the feeling. I FELL IN LOVE. My old man let me write a fan letter/vow of eternal devotion. He mailed it. A summer passed. No response. I planned my funeral.
We got a transfer. A few days before we left Greece, a fancy car delivered a beautiful box with the sweetest kindest letter, a head shot, & other little things. To this day, my heart swells whenever I see her face & see her dance. I luvya Rita. I luvya luvya luvya.
