2 talented men. It seems today we don't have the talent as these entertainers had. They did it all. And with class, & style. No displaying their bodies.
I saw this on TV when I was a little girl in the '70s, and ever since then, I have wished that someday I would get to see it again. I thought it was so funny. I tried describing it to all the adults and they didn't know what I was talking about. I always KNEW someday I would see it again. 50 years later, here we are! Love these two guys!!
The two greatest dancers in movie history did ONE number together and how lucky are we that we can see them together in their prime doing what they did best, DANCE!
If you wanna see the best dance movie ever made check out Stormy Weather. Fred Astaire said so himself that it was the greatest dance routine to ever be put on film and that's coming from one of your idols. So just imagine if racism never existed you with no doubt would say that the Nicholas brothers are the best dancers to ever do it. Because of racism you say Babe Ruth but I say Josh Gibson. It's a shame that the color of a person skin downplays there contributions to American Culture.
Even Astaire and Kelly were impressed (Very!) by the Nicholas Brothers, and freely admitted that the Nicholas Bros. did things they couldn't do, that they 'outclassed' them, dance-wise. I have long appreciated the dancing talents of both Astaire and Kelly, but as far as I know, and as far as other dancers have said, the Nicholas Bros. were at the top, far greater than all other dancers. There are other videos with interviews of many professional dancers that all agree on that.
13 years difference in age between Astaire and Kelly. 13 years is a lot when it comes to such athletic perfection, and Mr Astaire keeps up with no problem. Amazing-the both of them
What they did was art at its best. They were great artists. It's a pity that the cinema of those years is gone. Today we are fed with mediocrity and commercialism.
Oh if there could have been a movie including the Nicholas brothers, Fred and Gene! The four tapping power houses...it'd be epic. I'll settle for this, Stormy Weather and the dance-off from the movie 'Tap'
I'm glad you mentioned the Nicholas Brothers. They had a unique style all their own, and we're incredible dancers! They're more obscure than Gene and Fred. Once you find them, they knock you out!
You can't say one was better then the other, they were just the best there ever will be. I enjoyed this so much felt joy and smiled through the whole thing.
Wonderful in thier own ways. Incredible dancers never been anyone like them since. As for fred not being good looking, what the hell that man was like a butterfly when he danced didnt need to be a hunk. Both of them were my idols even as a child, i couldnt take my eyes of them in old movies on the the tv. Thier timing was something to be cherished. Was watching fred with judy garland in dancing "walk up the avenue" heaven! Dont knock my Fred for not being good looking neither was Sammy Davies but what a talent.
I would never say one was better than the other. They are both phenomenal, with their own styles. Astaire seemed to defy gravity and float above the ground, and Kelly seemed to push against the earth athletically, almost daring it to hold him. One was apples; the other oranges. Both delicious, but very different, indeed.
@@Promptjock Indeed. They had their own individual styles, but they could emulate the styles of each other. And they always, always, always complemented their partner, whether it was Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charisse, or Donald O'Conner. They were, quite simply, magical.
These two certainly became the most famous screen dancers - Astaire for his seemingly effortless grace, Kelly for his muscular athleticism - but I think there were other dancers who were as good. Donald O'Connor comes to mind, especially in his sequences with Kelly in Singin' in the Rain.
Each could dance the others style to perfection. All we know for sure is they were the two GREATEST movie dancers in history!!! Both were the whole package!!
Two amazing dancers, both unique in their own way. There will never be another like either one. I never grow tired of watching their performances. Enjoyable. Wish they were still with us. 💜
For sheer grace in dance no one could ever or will ever hold a candle next to Fred Astaire . And, for absolute athletic ability in dance Gene Kelly will always be the best.
Not true; the NIcholas Brothers far surpassed both Astaire and Kelly, both in talent and in athleticism, and both Astaire and Kelly admitted that. No one came close to the Nicholas Brothers in talent or ability, no one.
How amazing! I've never seen this before. Fred has the finesse of the old era and Gene has the masculine vigour of the new age...this is just so wonderful! Tears in my eyes watching the two greatest dancers male dancing together....
Fred looked like a dancer, Gene seemed to defy gravity. I thought Fred was very good and Gene's dancing,so frer and feather light, with a body that just didn't look like a dancer. Really liked Fred's work but I was fascinated by Gene's dancing, just magical.
Yeah, only Astaire was ugly through and through right down to his bones! He beat his wives, was mean to cast members, and was insanely jealous of anyone just as talented as him and he demanded he get top-billing... often which he did not get. Astaire could dance, but he couldn't act worth a shit.
@@MrPomelo555 I think Kelly is still my favourite. He was a better singer and actor. Genius dancer more creatively technical to Astaire's technically creative. Hard to separate. I guess it's just personal.. still..Cagney dancing down the stairs has to be one of the best alongside the table dance with Hope. Cagney was unique - i think Robbie Williams modelled his movement on Cagney
Astaire movements are from the hip - his torso hardly moves, while Kelly moves with his whole body. Different method but still wonderful to watch. Makes me want to rent some old time musicals like this - the entertainment value, the talent, the wholesomeness, doesn't compare to today's entertainment which seems to, and often does, push and cross the boundaries of decency.
I'm 42 and I watch classic movies all the time. My 22 year old nephew is into them as well because of me and that really makes me happy. This is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting this!❤
Enjoying That's Entertainment in 1974 when I was 15 made me fall in love with the MGM musicals, and specially with those 1-derful dancers, Kelly, Astaire , Donald O'Connor, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, Ray Bolger, Dan Dailey, Cyd Charisse, Vera-Ellen, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Debbie Reynolds, June Allyson, and some who were singers or actors like Peter Lawford, Sinatra, Gable, Joan Crawford had to dance too, it was great fun !!!
Never imagined I'd see them dance together. Kelly definitely has technique, but Fred has more grace than a lifetime of dinners in a Christian household!
Astaire just floated. Lightest and most graceful of the all. Kelly was so athletic. Both were just so brilliant and together it was magical. We don't see this sort of entertainment very often, and rarely in popular entertainment media today if at all. That's why they are so famous. There just isn't anything like them.

They were both famous for being hard driving perfectionists. I wish I could have a been a fly on the wall watching their rehearsals. They must have been fantastic.
I have a picture in my head that Gene Kelly demanded a lot from himself but all the others too (Singing in the rain job etc). Fred Astaire demanded perfection only from himself and was more liked because of that.

I see a mixture of the athletic style of Kelly and the intricate tap style of Astaire in this routine. These guys are among the greatest contribution of the American culture to the world!
I didn't see this for more than 30 years! I loved it so much i kept it on a video tape but lost all about 15 years ago. So happy to see these two great dancers performing with so much talent!
Both talented and handsome men. Does anyone else love watching classic musical movies, or is it just me?

Chelsea Canales Colin loves too
I prefer Hustler movies, but sure, this is OK.
