The craziest thing to me is that he wasn't even young in most of these dances! He was born in 1899 but he was still just as energetic, charismatic, and talented as someone in their early 20's. Love him!

Fred's 'drunk tap dance on a bar' number from 'The Sky's The Limit' is one of my favorites. Every time I see him dancing...
    his massive talent..charm...and unassuming
manner gets me hooked all over again.
We could certainly use a Fred Astaire today...thankfully we have his 31 films.

Fred Astaire was born in 1899 so it's easy to see what age he was in the movies mentioned here. It's pretty amazing to see that for some of those movies he was in his early to mid 50s and was still had energetic moves. The youngest you see him here in this list is him in his mid 30s.

No utube, copyright issue. Saw it before they pulled it. When you watch closely & slow-mo his moves are amazing with the cane. This retired martial artist, dancer, and drummer has much respect for his perfection in movement and rhythm. No one compares to this class act.

In the 30s, every would-be star flocked to Hollywood, looking for work. The crowd scenes with all those underpaid dancers (The Continental) moving with grace and precision petered out when the Great Depression ended. But the Fred and Ginger films were pure escapism from the bleakness and poverty.
