I always wondered why winchester called this the 38wcf and not the 40wcf? And for colt and other manufacturers the 40-40 sounds better than 38-40. Beautiful rifle.
Great shoot with that old 38-40, I love that cartridge. Just a mild 14,000 psi pressure and as sweet as can be. That 73 was a true beauty and shooting that old iron is greater fun than any of the new stuff, at least for me anyway.
Amazing '73 Mark. I built a Model 92 a few years back in 38-40 WCF and it too was a delight to shoot with its 24 inch octagon barrel. Thanks again for an informative video with a beautiful color case hardened Winchester.
Good shooting Mark, we have a shoot called the lever action jubilee, Ridgeway PA. shooting some of the old lever guns out to 500 meters , mostly if you do your part, the old rifles will do there's, thanks for the content! Mostly we shoot the 1894 30 WCF.
Love the area that you have for shooting. Years ago, I had a place like this that I could shoot at. It would be fun to be able to get out my old Winchester 94 and shoot some steel at a fair distance. I'm limited to shooting at indoor ranges these days. None of them allow steel targets.
I've shot a 38WCF chambered 73 at 100 yards. If you focus downrange you can see the bullet flight with the naked eye. It's a fantastic round and rifle combination!
Very nice video. If you have some videos on how YOU routinely clean your Winchesters and SAA's after black powder could you please direct me to them? If not, maybe you would consider doing one or two videos on the subject, although I think the rounds today must have been light smokelss from the scant smoke. : ) DJ
That is a very nice rifle. I have a picture of my Grate Grate Granddad with his Winchester 1873. We have no idea where that rifles is,or what it was chambered in. I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford one in shooting condition, but if I am I'll shore enjoy it.
Boy I wish I could go to your show, I’d buy that old Winchester in a minute, I reload 38wcf for my old colt single actions, don’t see them old Winchester here in Ohio,
Man Mark, that’s a beautiful 73. It would be hard to let that one go. I’m the same. Definitely love the 44wcf, but now I’m thinking I need to start looking for a 38-40 now. I’ve got to get out and get to shooting some now.
I have a third model in 38WCF with same features but rifle butt plate. It's not nearly as good a condition as your example. Bore is rotted out but still shoots Cowboy Action good enough.
More information about the rifle and ammunition would make a good video even better. What year was the rifle manufactured? What GEN 1873 is it, looks like a third GEN to me. What is the groove diameter of the barrel? What is the diameter of the bullets? Are the cartridges factory or hand loaded? If handloaded what components did you use? What was the velocity of the bullet. Thanks for a good video.
I have a 73 in 38-40. I haven’t shot it in many years. Best I remember, it shot pretty good but I never shot from 180 or even 100 for that matter.... Your video makes me want to get it out, dust it off and send a few rounds down range....
Great looking rifle, I’ve got a 73 in 38-40 with the shotgun buttplate made 1881, although it’s not nearly as nice as yours. 38-40 has become about one of, if not my favorite caliber to shoot. I’ve got a 92 Winchester in it and a colt new service and 94 marlin on the way also chambered for it.
A very nice rifle and a great shooter. That is one certainly to have for sure. Question for you - do you ever lose some of your brass when they fall into the grass? I seem to always lose some when they land in the grass. Thanks.
Why would anybody waste time watching and making snarky comments on videos about subjects they have no interest in? Why don't you spend your valuable time doing something more constructive?
Have one made in 1888 my dad got it on 1937. It they age of 16 it has been in the family for ever 90 years he got it on colorado for cleaning so rich ladies attic in the side plate is scratched F.W.Moron????
You really do produce some of the best down to earth real world content on these old rifles. May the trail rise up to greet you.

Nothing nicer than an old Winchester with some honest patina

Wish you would come to a Minnesota show Mark. You have great videos.....love to watch them on such a beautiful ranch.
I was enjoy seeing an upload from you! Thanks for the great videos.
What a great old Winchester! Thank for the video.

That will make someone a very nice shooter as well as pleasing to the eyes
Beautiful country, fine old lever action to play with, life is good at the Cinnabar!
Man, livin` the dream you are! Cool shoot-thanks!
Wow what a beauty. So special seeing original color case hardening. Thanks for sharing with us.
Just beautiful

Great fun. Wish I was there !
I greatly enjoyed your video installment today - thank you. The landscape around your shooting area is simply spectacular.
What a beauty of a 73 and a great shooter! Thanks Mark!

I think you officially have the most beautiful range on UA-cam...and a beautiful old '73.
Great video. I love the '73
A beautiful classic rifle. Subscribed.
Haha! Yeah, wow. Very cool video. I enjoyed the longer range chute'n.
Glad to see your "Fan Club" come out to the range for a visit. Nice old '73 and you shoot much better than I do off hand. Have a great week!
Thank you !!!
What a sweet shooting old rifle. Thanks for the video Mark. Sure wished I could attend the show in Colorado.
The drip coming from the 1873-74 gats is outstanding
That sure is some pretty country, and the rifle ain’t all that bad either. Thanks for the video

What a beautiful rifle and good shooting. Thanks for sharing.
Nice looking levergun. I have not been to Greeley Colorado in years. If you see our mutual I hope all is well
Great video. I have a hard enough time seeing a milk jug a 180 yards without optics, let alone hitting it with iron sights
You’re better than you let on Mark. 😊
Nice Shooting Mark 😊😀😊

The '73 is a real good looking rifle. That was fun. You're pretty handy with that .38-40.
That a beautiful rifle, probably sell for a nice price.

Where you getting ammo or do you reload
@@saxdogg69 I reload mine but you can sometimes find ammo on gunbroker.
I can't believe it...!
You mean to tell me that they still have Gun Shows in ol Colorado ?? 😮
After this video, I'm guessing this '73 won't last long on the table over in Greeley.
Mine is going on GB tonight, have to sell some guns. I'll miss it.
haha those deer staring
Mark that Winchester is a wonderful rifle.
I wonder if the notches on the right side are killed human beings rather than animals?
I think about that every time I look at my "kids" in the safe....the stories I wish they could tell
A very nice rifle and a great shooter. That is one certainly to have for sure. Question for you - do you ever lose some of your brass when they fall into the grass? I seem to always lose some when they land in the grass. Thanks.
What is going to be the price on that Mr Mark? Also what would a good shooter without the extras go for? Thanks Jeff in Tucson
What do you think of the new production Winchester 1895’s I’d like to have one in 30 Government?
What would a great shooter in that good of shape go for $?
Load on sunday and shoot all week
