I'm surprised to see it actually seems to really exist. I won't be buying until multiple people have it in hand and reviewed it, and we have some kind of guarantee on updates etc.
It was a good video. I was excited to see it working. I am hoping the phone is “clicky”☺️I believe we’re entering a new era of simplistic phones. Social media and doom scrolling has affected our mental health and in some way our outlook. Although useful it can also be terrible. Glad to see minimal company is leading the way.
I agree. The idea of getting off our devices and ending the doomscrolling era is becoming mainstream. I am loving all the new devices coming out and look forward to seeing more people convert to a simpler relationship with technology.
Just placed an order for the onyx. This is the phone I have been looking/waiting for. Trying to not get my hopes up as I fully expect it could have some glitches. I am generally not an early adopter, but happy to fund an effort like this.
Cool and nice color pick. I think the glitches will mostly be software which should be ironed out through updates. Overall I think it's a project that is super interesting and a device a lot of us have been dreaming about.
Thanks for making these, few times does a product interest me enough follow it for half a year. My skepticism has been based on purely the data, but I actually really want the device to be good/workable. It would improve my life!
Great to see the minimal team finally showing some pics and videos of the prototype phones in action. It seems like they're roughly at the same stage of development as Light Phone III and Mudita Kompakt. On the minimal phone discord, people are getting more excited now that there are a few photos and videos of the phone. There was a big debate when the founders proposed a poll where the phone might ship without Google play (and use microG instead), however the majority voted against that idea.
Good to know what's happening on Discord! I hope they can get the Google Play store by the time the first batch is released. I am really looking forward to the demo to get more of an idea on how the device will look and feel.
When the first photo came out, I was pretty excited. But after a couple days and only photos(plus the reddit sleuths) I got skeptical. I'm I'm the same boat. I still don't believe its real and the fact the creator is known for pulling the rug, I'll wait until they ACTUALLY ship.otherwise, I'll just keep looking for a deal on a key2.
This phone is supposed to support google play. There is no information about this phone on the official google play support page. I wonder on what basis it will be done?
Im actually interested in owning one, I really need something that will last days, but still have enough features to run messaging, email and social apps.
The prototype is not difficult to make. Here is shown a regular Android (AOSP) with the application uploaded. The main problem will be the software and getting a huge number of certificates. It may happen that the phone will not work on different networks. The software will have to be adapted to eink otherwise it makes no sense.
The odd think is that just because it works on slack/discord/etc now doesn't mean it will with new updates/release/etc. What is the projected life cycle and where do the funds come from to maintain the tech when you do not have multiple market offerings... this is why in the past these phones are only viable with proprietary OS. Will you be able to turn off Android updates? Maybe. Will your aps stop working if you do. Something as lame as "Android Auto" popping up every time you launch maps has totally made the Titan Pocket useless as a navigation aid - you lose 20% of an already reduced screen. Win for google - one less device to compete with in the marketplace. So, yeah, what we need is more focus on the software development ecosystem, not the hardware. Yet the device drivers for the hardware are being monopolized by the big manufacturers. This is why Linux phone projects died.
This seems promising at least given past few months of little to no information. Does it mean they are on the way to ship out phones in September 2024 for the first batch? Did the Minimal team give you any information pertaning to the same, Laura?
I think the first batch is more likely to ship out in the begining of October from what they explained to me. It's crunch time to get all the certifications and access to the Google Play store.
@@LauraMalvoyante That's good to know. A lot of people are now cautiously optimistic about the device... Good to see many companies coming up in this space of eink devices.
Hey Laura, I want to buy the minimal phone to get off my phone more and to get off social media more, however, I don't know how to preorder it with the selfie camera. Whenever I click preorder, I am given 3 options (these are the 3 colour variations) I cannot scroll down on it to see if there are different camera options, which is weird. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that or if there are other options. Can you please tell me how to order the one with the selfie camera?
By default the first couple batches will automatically have the selfie camera. I'm not sure when or if they will have the option without the selfie camera.
I was very interested in this device, another option I am considering is mudita kompakt. One likes the qwerty keyboard and the other has a compact size and a physical switch for wifi, bluetooth, gsm, mic and camera
Nice appearance, but if there will be strong hardware and software, and a 90-120Hz color display, at least a 50MP camera and stereo sound, maybe I'll try it and pay 6-700 USD for it, of course only if the buttons are on the good side :D This is doomed like all e-books... Even a Unihertz Titan is 100X more serious.
Not really feasible with E-Ink displays. running them at LCD like refresh rates results in a lot of ghosting.
@@InvidiousIgnoramus this is possible in most cases but you need very good algorithms along with good software customized for eink.
I wish I could get one of these. It's looking pretty good. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Don't. It's a scam.
Never back anything on a funding site. You have no recourse if there are problems and will lose your money.

It should but it will be quite choppy with the e-ink refresh rate.
